1  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Should I get a cat? on: August 02, 2014, 02:49:31 AM

Quote from: Lee on August 01, 2014, 11:16:05 PM

That's the thing though, I was thinking of getting an older cat, 8-10 years old, one that's not too active and perfectly happy just hanging out. That is a concern though, that it may mean higher vet costs at it gets older.

$20 a month and $200 a year on vet bills would be well within my budget.

I suspect the monthly expenses are a bit over $20, but $30 should cover it. Litter and food add up and you won't want to skimp on either one.

My last two cats died at 19 and 22. My current ones are healthy at 19 and 15. I'm not an evil cat owner, but I have not taken my cats to the vet till they're fighting end of life issues. $200 is a vet visit plus yearly shots if you do that. I never really have.

All mine have always been indoor cats. Some of them want out and others want nothing to do with it. My 19 year old wants out, but she'll just sit by the for till her cat brain tells her it's time to go back in. Tha 15 y/o wouldn't dream of going outside.

I can't imagine living w/o cats. I understand what ironrod is up against and that will be a tough day.

Is it stupid of me to think she might handle this like an adult, talk about the issues we've had and try to sort it all out? Should I keep the lunch light, informal and not touch on anything substantial?

Ringo is underrepresented.

I don't think Live and Let Die is among McCartney's top 5 post Beatle's song but it was important getting him back in the eye of oldsters once the fab four broke up. It was the first James Bond movie I saw and I remember my sister saying "Poor Paul being reduced to playing a James Bond Movie theme" and my dad saying "That's a big deal. People listen to those themes!" I'm not sure if he even connected poor Paul with the Beatles.

Working class hero does nothing for me, but I wasn't there.

Back Off Boogaloo - Ringo
No No Song
Give Me Love - George
All Those Years Ago
Give Peace a Chance - John
Just Like Starting Over
My Love - Paul
Junior's Farm
Jet
Maybe I'm Amazed
Ebony and Ivory
The Girl is Mine
David Bowie's Fame has John Lennon all over it.
BadFinger's No Matter What you Are has George all over it.
Basketball Jones is George on Guitar.
I didn't care for the Traveling Wilbury's but there you go...

Something for everybody there....You could make a pretty decent double album with some filler and what's in metalicorphan's post.

Just in case anybody has been under a rock. Brandon Hantz was pretty much the reason they axed the non-jury members showing up for the reunion. Maybe it would have been tried anyway, but they couldn't give that young man any more screen time. He needs real help, not publicity.

I missed the non-jury members less than I thought I was going to.

The oddest thing I thought was the amount of hate Dawn suffered for last week's blindside of Brenda.  That was Cochran's idea, Cochran's move, and Cochran's timing to bring it up while at the reward that Brenda sacrificed for to give him.  Dawn didn't even get that reward!  I get that Brenda held her responsible because she was closer relationship-wise but odd that all the fans seemed to do the same and were so bitter/adamant about it.

It wasn't just Brenda. A lot of folks got betrayed by Dawn. If you watched the on line Ponderosa video, it was pretty clear that Dawn was not getting any jury votes no matter who she came up against.

Corinne had the numbers for a turnover and went to Dawn to include her in the "new majority". Dawn played along, ran right back to her alliance and Corinne was gone.
Malcolm had the numbers for a turnover and went to to include her in the "new majority". Dawn played along, ran right back to her alliance and Malcolm was gone.
Inside of both of those alliances were Eddie and Reynolds.

So Dawn started the jury with the three amigos AND Brenda set against her. Then you take into account the daily meltdowns and Dawn had a lot of room to make up with the jury.

What hurt Dawn was that folks saw her as a trustworthy mothering type and she was consciously playing an untrustworthy game. It did not sit well with anybody. The funny thing was that neither Sherri or Eddie perceived any of the resentment to Dawn.

I sure hope not. There was some promise here, but it just kept drowning in quantity.

In Lost, you had a question (or four) and time to stew over them to make them interesting. The questions were explored by the characters and you cared.

In The River you had a question (or four) every five minutes. They seemed to flow off the characters backs and you just stared at the screen going "only 6 episodes."

19  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Are there any writers here at GT? on: January 30, 2012, 03:45:23 PM

I'm not a writer, but I am married to one. I've picked up a few things.

Like many creative outlets, it's a hard profession to maintain without a day job.

As many here have stated, if you want to write, then do it. Don't talk about it. Just write. Lots of folks want to have written. That's very different than wanting to write.

Being able to be critical of your own work, hear criticism of your own work and modify it is actually a pretty advanced skill. Without thinking very had I can point to several folks who have failed on the path for precisely that reason. If you can do that already, you are WAY ahead of the game.

Finish something. That's a big one. Lot's of folks are still re-hashing the great book they started 10 years ago. That doesn't work. If you are not going to finish it, throw it away and start something you will finish. Tough skill.

.....Somebody mentioned Gotham. I would echo that finding a decent workshop/community/writing group is a real plus. You will have to be careful about this because there are a ton of flakes out there, but good feedback is priceless.

What there IS of Age of Bronze is wonderful. I don't believe he will ever finish. I know, I know he's still working on it. It's been 13 years and he's not quite a quarter of the way through. YOU do the math.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is much better as a trio of graphic novels than the film shows. I don't believe all the loose ends are knotted up and the t's crossed, but what's there is beautiful. An editor would have helped, but then an editor might have destroyed what made it to the page.

Boy, A halogen work lamp sure is a good idea! Gonna add that to my list.

Extension cords
A pnueumatic Jack.

A good crepe pan.

small garage/basement/mancave fridge

External storage. You can never have enough external storage. If by chance you do have enough storage then you need more solid state external memory.
Power strips/cable octopi
I prefer to have a wired keyboard and mouse. Extensions for those cords would be nice.

I think Sash made the right choice with going with Chase/Holly/Jane. If he actually makes it to the final four and doesn't win final immunity I think they would take him as someone who probably isn't liked over someone like Jane who is. Of course that person who's left out will be pissed and probably give their vote to Sash. On top of that there's three jury members who were part of his alliance (Brenda/NaOnka/Useless Kelly). So maybe the voting will be pretty close if he makes it to the end.

I think Sash went the wrong way here and I think he did it because the group he ended up with was a cohesive alliance. I don't think he can beat Holly or Jane in a jury vote, where if he had gone with Fabio/Dan/Benray I think as long as he gets to the jury, he's a sure win.

Of course, in the past I've been wrong in my thinking about how juries would vote.

Quote from: Crawley on December 10, 2010, 01:07:18 AM

My ideal final 3 for this season would be Chase/Holly/Dan. Dan won't get a single question asked his way. Chase will give stupid answers. And Holly will just be crazy paranoid.
Dan/Na/Purple Kelly would have been awesome. "Jeff, do I have to cast a vote?"

It would have taken one minute for her to tell Kelly Purple who to vote for - say Benry (or Naonka).  Then herself, puppy dog Chase and Sash all vote the same way, Sash plays the idol for her and boom!  Done!  4 votes was enough to beat a split vote strategy.  That's not scrambling, it's like a couple minutes to tell your peeps what to do.
At which point you and your peeps have drawn a line in the sand where you are down 5-4 and getting ready for slow death.
The decision was for Sash to go that way or play for himself and he decided that he didn't need Brenda anymore. Can't fault him for that. She had become a pretty polarizing figure.

And now his options are that much better?  Personally I would have wanted to stick with at least one person with a brain in the middle of all these idiots, if only to have some set numbers and someone else to help manipulate the dolts.  Now that he's turned on Brenda, there's really not a single person there who trusts him or that he can trust.
....snip....
But maybe I'm underestimating Sash and he figured he needed to get rid of her at some point or another to win the million.  Guess we'll see!

Funny how things turn out isn't it? At 9 Sash looks like he's on the outs and one of the next to go. After two people quit, at 7 he looks like a lock to get into the final 4.

I suspect both Kelley and Naonka made their decision not just because of the physical conditions which did seem pretty terrible, but for mental isolation reasons as well. Kelly was the only person not in the know that Brenda was leaving. Even Brenda didn't bother to tell her. That has to sting. And Naonka....one of these things is not like the others......who knows where her mind was taking her.

Russell's expects the jury to not have any feelings. He thinks they should respect his game because he is the best at targeting another player and getting them voted out. The problem is that he was the only one in that final 12 who can put his feelings aside and say who played the best strategically. Everyone else clearly wanted to vote for the person who played the cleanest game. Which definitely wasn't Russell.

....What makes you think Rusell could put his own feelings aside? He just expects other people to put there feelings aside. In both reunion shows when he didn't win, he didn't put his feelings aside and say "so be it, I got outplayed." He whined like a 4 year old and wanted the rules changed so that he could win.

Then with the merge they go into the sort of social free-fall that Russell thrives on.

I still don't think he can win a jury, but Russell seems to be going far in this one as well.
