I seem to be in somewhat of a gaming slump.  No matter what I load up I inevitably feel apathetic and disengaged.  I keep cycling through my library, putting a game in, then quickly taking it out and putting a different game in, then taking it out and trying to find another game to put in, but inevitably lose interest and go back to reading or watching something on TV.

I've been in the same boat since before Christmas.

Biggest disappointment for me was Rage.

4  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: It's Thanksgiving. What's Your GOTY? on: November 24, 2011, 12:01:42 AM
Gears 3 for the same reasons given by ATB.  SP, co-op, horde, beast mode, versus with good bots, good DLC.  It's just such a great overall package.

Runners Up:

-Batman AC.  I liked it better than AA.  It's right up there with Bioshock and Mass Effect 2 as one of my favorite single players of all time.  Awesome in every way.

-Skyrim.  I never got into Oblivion and Fallout 3.  But this is Bethesda's best work by far.  It may end up higher once I have played more.

-MW3.  For multiplayer only.  Maybe it is because I skipped BLOPS.  But I am loving this game.  I love the new kill lstreaks and how fast the leveling is. I hate snipers so I am loving how the maps are smaller than MW2.  It seems like I unlock something every other round I play.  Even though I am terrible at it I keep coming back for more.  I might actually make it to level 80.  Something I never would have predicted before the game came out.

Disappointments:

-Rage.  Every time I try to play it I burn out after an hour or so.  It feels like Borderlands minus what made Borderlands fun.

-LA Noire.  The interrogations got repetitive after a while and the gun play was typically bad for a non-Red Dead Rockstar game.  It seemed to go on forever until I finally just stopped playing it.

MW3 and/or Battlefield 3.  Maybe I can convince myself to play some Rage or Batman, but I doubt it.

Played MW3 with Pete...

And that was the last of my gaming for the weekend once the in-laws and extended family arrived.    disgust

Sorry I missed your party invite Pete.   I could have used some help because I was really running bad Sat night. It seemed like I was getting shot on the back all night.
6  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Halo - What am I missing? on: November 21, 2011, 02:04:29 PM
To me the biggest thing Halo got right was the controls. Before Halo people thought you couldn't do proper FPS controls with a game pad. Now it is taken for granted. They got the combination of autocorrection and sensitivity just right. I agree it was far more than just an average game.

I'm enjoying it more than I expected to. Although I never played BLOPS much. I'm digging the new kill streak options and maybe I'm just lucky but lag has not been an issue at all for me. Now if I could just get my k/d above .66

Mechassault and NFL 2K5.
11  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Call of Duty:Modern Warfare 3 on: November 15, 2011, 03:36:13 PM
I agree with everything Pete said.  The only way to improve is to keep playing.  I am still pretty bad at the game myself. When I started playing MW3 on release day I was teeerrrrrible.   I was consistently at the bottom of my team's scoreboard for a few days.  My typical game was something like 4-10 or 6-15.  Recently I have at least gotten to the point where my typical game is 9-9 or 12-10 with a few 15-6s here or there.  My basic premise is that I am not going to win many one on one face offs.  So I try to always get the drop on people if I can.  I try to find a good spot with long sight lines and pick people off as they move around and use perks that keep me hidden from UAVs and killstreak aircraft.  Unfortunately this worked much better for me in MW2.  In MW3 there seem to be no 100% secure spots to sit in.  But if somebody comes up behind me for the kill I just live with it.  I figure if I can get 2 or 3 kills before somebody knifes me in the back it is a good tradeoff.  I generally don't move around much unless our team has a UAV up. The only time I will aggressively run around is when I or one of my teammates gets an advanced UAV up and I can seen not only where the opposition is, but which way they are facing.  I have found that the Type 95 AR works better than the SCAR for the way I play.  At this point if I get in a game on hardhat, village or other tiny map I am happy if I can break even k/d wise, but it's usually pretty ugly.

I managed to kill him twice at level 8, but the trade off was my Housecarl Lydia died too, which is weird as she wouldn't die on other attempts, just take a knee.  So I ran past and leashed him.

I ran for my life at level 7.

13  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Xbox 360 - do I need a HD? on: November 15, 2011, 03:10:58 AM
You could use a 16 GB USB flash drive if you don't want to get a HD.  I've seen them for as low as $15.

14  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Halo - What am I missing? on: November 15, 2011, 12:16:52 AM
I have played and enjoyed all of the Halo games.  To me the strength of the SP campaigns is the that the encounters are almost never scripted.  There are many ways to approach an encounter. Playing on higher skill levels doesn't just give the AI more hit points or stupid one shot kills.  It actually makes their AI play better.  The story was always secondary for me.  But that's true of most shooters.  Also Halo was the first shooter I can remember that made co-op play a priority.

Halo competitive multiplayer is probably the most skill based of any shooter on consoles.  In CoD/Battlefield if you get the jump on somebody you will generally kill them no matter how much better than you they are.  In Halo the better player will almost always win a one-on-one face off.  I think Halo rewards skill while Call of Duty rewards time spent playing.

Too bad it doesn't include stats on how many PS3's werent' bought or used to play games.

Why does that matter?

I'm fairly certain the PS3 has outsold the 360 by a wide margin in Europe and Asia.  Which isn't much of a surprise.

I think Hark is close to level 80 now

Close?  He prestiged about 2am EST this morning.  Hark is the bringer of the god-like portable radar.

There someone who has prestiged 4 times already

I wish they would do a better job with the matchmaking - they really should wall off the crazy I-have-no-life types (no offense Hark smile ) from the more casual players.  Just sucks all the fun out of it when you're getting consistently pwned, especially this early in the game's life cycle.

I agree with you.  But I think they are more concerned with getting people together with good pings instead of matching by level.

I just for some reason could not at all get into Fallout 3, despite trying numerous times.  I can't even put my finger on any one specific aspect of it, just that it failed to grab me.  I'm looking forward to getting back to the Elder Scrolls series and can't wait to see what they've done to go from Oblivion to Skyrim.  Well, I guess I can wait, at least until Christmas.

I couldn't get into Fallout 3 either despite many attempts.  But so far I am loving Skyrim. (about 5 hours in)

The world feels massive.  Yet the attention to detail even on minor quests and locations is pretty amazing.  The only complaint I have so far is some of the dialogue.  It breaks the immersion when I hear a Nord barbarian warrior say "they're good people," for example.

Wow.  I am terrible at this game.

I felt like I was moderately competent at MW2 and never played BLOPS.  But I cannot find a groove in MW3.  It seems like I lose every face off.

Other than sucking at it, I do like the way it plays.  Seems like the movement speed has been reduced across the board and the maps are well laid out.  You never feel secure in a spot because there always seems to be multiple paths to flank every position.

I got the game this morning as soon as Best Buy opened, and jumped online as soon as I got home.  I had to laugh as I was a level 1 in a room full of 30's and 40s'.   icon_lol

Sadly you are probably right Leo.  We used to have tons of people playing private matches and we always had a blast (until CSL would inevitably come in and ignore any rules we had put forth)  now those rules are enforceable! mwahaha!

even the Juggernaut custom mode I made for Blops is a standard private match mode.  The mode where Kato was always impossible to kill. frown

They even have my most hated mode from the Halo days: Infection.   disgust

I'd certainly be willing to give a private game or two a try, but part of my problem is I have little time to play as it is, and I always feel like I'm scrambling to be even remotely competitive by leveling up way behind everyone else.  With such limited play time I always feel like every match played without any XP puts me that much further behind.

Plus, while XP can be considered a pointless carrot, the rewards are satisfying and useful.  Achievement points accrued toward gamerscore are more useless despite many of our obsessions with earning certain achievements, but experience points in COD games are useful and provide some tangible reward.

XP really is tough to resist.   icon_redface

I could see myself playing private games quite a bit.  All of the members of my usual group play online less than 5 hours per week on the average.  We have been playing Gears mainly over the years because the lack of playing time does not become a factor when everybody has access to the same weapons and abilities.  We have always shied away from CoD and Battlefield.  But if we would all have access to the whole range of weapons and perks to pick from that could change things.

Are the other sports really benefiting from non-exclusivity?

EA's NHL is the clear leader
2K's NBA is the clear leader

Those games are so far ahead of the competition that there is no competition now.

Now you may say that the potential for sales is driving the improvement and, while it's possible, MLB is exclusive and is still awesome.

I'm not sure what the story is with soccer.

I just don't understand why it's assumed that if the NFL was wide open, and we'd have multiple options for awesome football games, when the reality doesn't show this would be the case.

Being exclusive doesn't mean it should/would suck either.

Agree 100%.  I was as big a fan of NFL 2K as anybody. But to me Madden plays very well on the field, and has for a few years now.  I do wish they would beef up the online franchise portion to at least the level of NCAA (AI controlled teams, usefull web based interface, etc.)  But I completely disagree with people who say the on-field gameplay is inferior to the NFL 2K series in it's heyday.  Given the sales Madden has enjoyed over the least few years there is no way they are going to completely start over with the gameplay engine until the next generation of consoles comes out.  If you expect that evey year, then you are going to be disapointed every year.

I don't think you follow what I said.

I KNOW they aren't actually balanced, but they are reprinting them now which means they consider them fair game again which is another reason I'm glad I'm through.  Same with moxes and the like.  All the things they put on the side for so long because they ruined the game are now coming back because all the other cards have increased in power so much that they don't stand out quite as much.

Actually I think you missed the point. There is no format where these cards are legal except the 100 card commander format. Wizards reprinting the cards does not make them legal. If anything the overall card pool has become much less powerful over the years since the game was released.
