That's very IGNesque, don't you think?

When was the last time you saw IGN hand out a 50?   They are an 'upper part of the scale' shop.
They were, but their new reviews editor has completely changed their scale, and 5 is now considered "Average." In fact, their Sonic Lost World Wii U review got a 5.8. So they have definitely been using much more of the range than they normally have in the past.

Game Informer... their 7 is considered "Average." How weird is that???

Man, this set is pretty fantastic. A bit overpriced, yes, but damn if they don't look amazing. The smoke from the train in Shadow of a Doubt, the colors in Vertigo... these look like they could have been filmed yesterday.

A lot of thought was put into how we approach our reviews going forward. We hope that this better represents the particular score a game should receive, as well as allow us to use the entire scale.

Yeah, there's nothing even as remotely engrossing as the trials from Heavy Rain.

Hey guys. You should check out our front page and take a look at all the hard work Mike has done to redesign it. We're hoping that this design will highlight our original content, and allow our readers to see a ton of stuff all at once, and keep clicking around, reading stories.

Notice the bar that sticks at the top of the site as you scroll down. We've got some other stuff coming up in the next few weeks that we'll be rolling out that will help unify the rest of the site with our new redesign.

Please, let us know if you have any problems with it. List your operating system and browser with the problem you experience.

Hope you like it!

I only watched the Disney Infinity one.

  • I liked all of the game play that was shown.
  • I liked that the reviewer seemed to have played the game extensively.
  • I thought the information presented in the review was helpful in deciding whether or not the game would interest me.

On the other side, I found the tone to be very monotonous and unemotional.  He was pleasant to listen to, but he seemed uninterested.  That improved a bit at the point where he mentioned Near Field Communications being how the figures communicate, but even then it was uneven and at the 3 minute mark I started looking at the timer to see how much was left.  I finished the whole thing, though, and as I said, I liked the content of the review.

Overall, I would encourage you to continue with these types of reviews as I think my one complaint is easily fixed with a bit more practice.

Yep. That was me. I quickly realized that what works in print is BOOOOOORING when spoken aloud -- my next video review will definitely be much more interesteing.

I would only have an interest in playing this on the PC, as I don't own a console.  Since that version doesn't come out until October and apparently is going to be Toy box only, is there any reason to buy any of the stuff available now?  Other than the sales going on currently.

Will the PC version even use the same figures, etc?  Since it is Toy box only, would there be any reason to buy the playsets?

I'm not sure exactly what the PC version will entail, but each figure comes with a card with a code that you enter online. That will likely unlock that figure for use on both the PC and iOS platforms.

Ok, so I have a few extra Power Discs that I'm willing to trade off for others if you've got extras. A handy guide if you're wondering which name corresponds to which disc: https://infinity.disney.com/power-discs#set1

My extras:

Fix-it Felix Repair Power (Disc 2 of 20)
Rapunzel's Birthday Sky (Disc 17 of 20)
Alice's Wonderland (Disc 12 of 20)
Carl Fredricksen's Cane -- I've got two of these (Disc 9 of 20)

I need:

Cinderella's Coach (Disc 6 of 20)
Kahn (Disc 7 of 20)
Nemo's Seascape (Disc 15 of 20)
Astro Blasters Space Cruiser -- one of the rare ones (Disc 19 of 20)

Anyone want to swap? biggrin

73, buggy, unintuitive, clumsy controls and incredibly rough around the edges?  Hmmm...

Yeah, it seems reviews are all over the place on this. Game Informer gave it a 9, Forbes gave it a 9, IGN gave it a 8.7 and Gametrailers gave it a 8.6. I thought the Gametrailers review would have been even higher the way they were praising it the whole review.

Yet, it got a 73 here and I've also seen a 2/5 at another site.

Could be a love it or hate it type game.

Polygon has it at an 8, GamesRadar gave it a 2.5/5.

To be fair, I really enjoyed the game, despite its flaws. My daughter and I are having a blast with the different playsets and just dinking around in the Toy Box.

I really hope they work out these issues with the inevitable next-gen editions. I mean, I wouldn't have gone out and bought a Playset for a movie I didn't even like if I didn't think there was value in this game. This is a decent start to what could be a fantastic franchise. And that's fine.

But seriously, that Incredibles helicopter can die in a fire.

I just had a minor dust up in a Target because their computers said the Cars Playset wasn't available until 10/15. I had to call the manager and point to their ad in the paper that showed the set that I was trying to purchase was right there, and I grabbed it from the giant display.

I normally don't blow up like that. I was shaking as I left the store. I don't get how people can rage on store employees like that without feeling anything. I've worked retail, I've been a recipient of that first hand.

It's been a rough week. But I got my Cars Playset, and now they know for future customers that there's a potential issue with their barcodes.

Still. I'm gonna go lie down for a bit.  icon_frown

Really sh**y move on Disney's part to hold the review embargo all the way up to release.

Review embargo is tomorrow.  You still have time one way or the other, but the stuff I've heard so far is that it'll be worth it.

It releases tomorrow. So yeah, embargo is the same day as release.

BTW, target is having a 50% off sale on the Cars and Lone Ranger playsets. I'm gonna go grab Cars when they open. biggrin

Wait a sec here...   David, you are the one reviewing the game, correct?

You area also thinking of driving to Target to get a Cars playset tomorrow, correct?

I'm going to use my advanced college edumacation to guess that this means this review is going to be a very positive one.

You compare the game to both Kentucky Route Zero and Dear Esther.  I like Kentucky Route Zero but Dear Esther is my most hated game of the last few years.  Where on the spectrum does this belong?

Such that the game is about the narrative and exploration, less about actually being a capital-g "Game." Gone Home is far less cryptic and much more satisfying as an experience than Dear Esther.

I was really interested in this game until I heard it uses the old Wii controller. I detested that thing. And from what I've read the regular game pad controls are unintuitive, and I've long since passed the point in my life where I'm willing to spend time fighting a control scheme.

but I'm happy to hear that some people are really enjoying the game.

Honestly, the Wii Remote is damn near perfect for this game. It doesn't use the "waggle," but rather the pointer, and the ability to aim while moving is a godsend.

Metal Gear Solid
Metal Gear Solid (Game Boy) aka Metal Gear: Ghost Babel (This game was AWESOME).
Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty
Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes (GameCube)
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

Working on Peace Walker right now.

Sons of Liberty was great if you examined it as a post-modern work. The way that it subverts narrative tropes, the expectation of the player, the blending of reality and the virtual, that you never really know if what's happening is real by the end of it... fantastic.

I just wish Pikmin 3 was fun and fully playable with only the control pad.

Is it not?  From this review I read:
Quote from: Ben Kuchera
While Nintendo helpfully suggested I start with the Wiimote and nunchuk, I much preferred to play with the Wii Uís GamePad. Using the right analog stick to control the view, and the left stick to control the movement of your character as well as the aiming reticle felt natural, and made navigating the miniature world a simple task. This also lets you look down at your map and see the number of your various Pikmin at any time, which is a nice touch.

Hmm, I had read 3 different reviews (including the GT one) and they all mentioned that the gamepad was not the optimal way to play the game.  That's good news to hear that isn't the case for everybody as I'd much rather just use the pad.

It's not terrible, it's just not nearly as precise as with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. With the remote I can run around a bad guy while throwing Pikmin in any direction. On the gamepad there's a buffer between aiming and actual movement, and it means your reaction time is significantly diminished. It's not unplayable, but it's not ideal.

Hmmm..

This kinda puts me in limbo.    The figures are bad enough to be seen as a rapidly dieing console.    My family (kids and wife) want Disney Infinity in a few weeks.    The Wii U is the 'living room' console, and thus I was planning to buy it for that system so they could all play it.

With these sales numbers, it sorta makes me want to buy it on a different console.    Perhaps the 360 or the PS3.    Problem is that the PS3 is hooked to my computer monitor/speaker system.     The 360 in my bedroom is one of the old white models and frankly I'm just waiting for it to give up the ghost and go kaput.

I really would rather not buy a game that is likely to have some legs in terms of longevity for a system that is about to go through seizures of death.

I played Disney Infinity at E3 on both the Wii U and the PS3. Get the PS3 version. The Wii U version looks like an upscaled Wii game, with frame skips and crappy graphics. The PS3 version looked way better.

Shadowrun Returns has filled in some of the time in between. It feels a bit low rent at times (which is understandable since they made that entire game with their $1.4 million Kickstarter funds or however much it was, and I wish there was a proper tutorial rather than a giant info dump right at the beginning. But otherwise, it's an excellent rebirth of the Shadowrun franchise. Can't wait for the Berlin DLC and the amazing mods that are sure to come out of this.
74  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [XBLA/PC] Fez - Fez 2 cancelled on: July 27, 2013, 08:31:16 PM
If this is true (and Fish does have the tendency to be a bit of a drama queen, so I'm still holding out hope), then this is one of the most disappointing things I've heard in a long time. I absolutely loved FEZ, and I really wanted to see what he'd do with the sequel, especially since it was going to be so radically different from the first.

Now, people have criticisms about how Fish handles himself in public, and it's true that he should probably not tell people to go kill themselves on Twitter. But I actually empathize with him a lot, and feel like I see a lot of myself in him: someone who's incredibly passionate about his work and wears his heart on his sleeve. Taking criticism is hard, and you build up a thick skin when it comes to your work -- but personal attacks are really hard to let go of, especially when they're as vitriolic as they were in this exchange. I remember when people were calling me an idiot over my NFS: Most Wanted Wii U review -- just because I didn't think that it was the best version of the game. It hurt. A lot.

I love video games. I love the people that make them, the people who report on them, and the people who play them. But as amazing as this industry can be, it can also be this incredibly toxic, debilitating morass of human slime and ill will -- all because of a bunch of zeros and ones. Video games are my life, and I never want to give up on it -- but man, some times it's hard to keep pushing forward and dealing with all the fucktards who don't realize how much words can really hurt people.

I think we all need to take a step back and realize something here -- we're all people living on this big rock in space together. Let's try to just have some fun while we're here.

Yeah, this game is stupid hard. I'm really liking the atmosphere and the augmented reality meets feudal Japan stuff, but I had to lower the difficulty to make any sort of headway in the game. I know, I suck, but hey -- at least I know it. I'm about six hours in and I can't wait to keep playing.

I just wish the graphics weren't so low-rent. Compared to Persona 3/4, this game is downright ancient looking.
