201  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wii U on: November 22, 2012, 05:28:00 PM

My old TV might be partly to blame (Sony SXRD), I'd guess that HD technology has come a long way since I got that TV.  But other devices like PS3 look vibrant so I don't know why Wii U is different.  This review sort of explains why but it's a bit too technical for me, I'm not that big a video phile.

So after buying it yesterday, I look up the game list to see what else to buy besides Mario.  Absolutely nothing!  Yeah, I've been on blackout mostly and didn't do any research.  Not a big deal though, I can wait for some good exclusives.  It's nice to play 2D mario on the bigscreen, it's not the same as playing 2D mario on the DS.  Brings me back to the SNES days.  The pad is much better than holding the wii mote sideways but I think I will get a pro controller.

Oh this is how little I knew about Wii U, I actually thought it was a portable system because someone mentioned it was portable in this thread and I didn't realize it was mostly a joke.  So is the pad just a streaming device?

To update the system I actually had to put the Wii in the DMZ and then it worked.  Nintendo still hasn't figured out internet protocols, I still get lots of delays and disconnects just like the Wii used to.  Never had any issues with 360 or PS3 which are using wireless just fine and they are sitting beside the Wii.

Overall I like the hardware though.  Seems like there is good potential for some fun asynchronous gameplay.  Since I already have a bunch of Wii motes, I'm all set for a Wii U party!

Most of the ports are pretty worthy versions of the previous counterparts, but the other big game for Wii U right now is Zombi U, which I bought but haven't had a chance to play yet. I've heard good things though.

And yes, the pad is basically a streaming device; it doesn't actually do any of the processing on its own. But certain games will let you play on the device while someone else uses the TV, which is a really cool feature. Also, Black Ops 2 has "split screen" multiplayer by having one player use the TV for their screen while another player uses the Gamepad. It's pretty awesome.

Just tried the wii mode and the screen was all messed up.  The wii menu was all red almost like a cable was loose but the wii u mode is fine.

Downloading zombiu now will take 2:30 hours pretty slow going.

Yeah, Nintendo needs to do something to speed up their servers, but it's pretty cool that they not only encourage using external hard drives (rather than some kind of proprietary memory add on), but that they have day one digital downloads of most of the biggest launch titles. Nintendo needs to keep that up, it's a great start.

Ok....so there is a bug of sorts when you try to add friends. If u go through the friend list app...u will send an invite but the other person will never see it. They will just have to know to add u manually. No notification or anything. In order to properly add someone u have to gothrough the miiverse app and "search users" then add them from there that way they will get the notification that u want to be friends.

Yeah, I realized that too. I don't think it's a bug, but rather a "feature." It's not perfect, but people tend to forget how crappy the Xbox 360 and PS3 were when they first launched. If Nintendo is smart, they'll work all this stuff out in the coming months.

Yeah, that is why I am giving them a *pass* on this issue/feature. Xbox Live and PSN have come a long way since they were introduced. I have no doubt that Nintendo will fix things up and improve on things. It just sucks that Nintendo didn't do this a long time ago. It's just kind of embarassing that they are just now getting a proper online service up and running. Anyway, the Miiverse stuff has a ton of potential. I am eager to see what they can do with it.

Miiverse, when it's not being obtuse, is awesome. I love that every single game has its own pre-built community, and you can send messages and ask questions. Yesterday, I asked the BLOPS2 community if it was worth getting, and I was actually able to get a few responses that were genuinely helpful. It's kinda nice.

Email Microsoft before you use it if you're not absolutely sure it was them who gave it to you. It wouldn't hurt, and if it is legit, it's not like the code is going anywhere.

Any impressions on trying the original Wii games on this? Any graphical improvements or oddities?

I haven't tried it myself, but from what I hear, nothing has changed at all. When you launch the Wii option, you're essentially turning on a Wii inside your Wii U. The Gamepad turns off and everything. So, for better or for worse, you're getting the original Wii experience.
208  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wii U on: November 18, 2012, 09:47:27 PM
I just got mine this morning, been updating, playing with settings, messed with Mario and Nintendo Land. I'm impressed. The screen works very well, and it's cool to be able to play console games without even having to turn the TV on. Out of the promised TV functionality, the only video app available at the moment is Netflix, and it works really well. Switching between watching on TV and watching on the Gamepad is instantaneous, and when you're watching on TV, the Gamepad functions as a way to access different options like Closed Captioning, or manage where you are in the show/movie. Nice touches here.

Nintendo Land and Mario U both are tons of fun. Played them both with my girlfriend and I found myself enraptured with a Mario game for the first time since Mario Galaxy. Nintendo Land has lots of stuff to do, the minigames are pretty fleshed out, and most have a bunch of levels and options available, giving that one some actual lasting power. Granted, console launches are usually the worst time to buy a system, as anyone who got an Xbox 360 at launch can attest to. But once a few of the other games start hitting and developers stop porting and start getting real (by making games that actually take advantage of the system), I think this thing can be magical given a few months. I can't wait for Pikmin 3, that's for sure.

I'm planning on picking up Zombi U and COD: BLOPS 2 at Toys R Us today, as they're having a buy 1 get 1 40% sale on Wii U games. I hear good things about BLOPS 2, both in general and with the Wii U version, so I'm excited about that.

If anyone wants to friend me, my Nintendo ID is davidrobots. Add me and I'll add you back. Hope to see you guys in the Miiverse!

Found this out from Cheap Ass Gamer, but apparently Target is having a Buy 2 games, Get 1 free deal. The ad isn't officially out yet, but CAG is rarely wrong about this kinda stuff (especially stickied threads) so, I'm posting this here for you guys to see. As for me, I'll definitely be picking up Assassin's Creed: Liberation and I'll most likely be picking up Most Wanted on Vita and ZOE Collection on PS3... or I'll pick up my ACIII from GameStop to get the bonus mission, buy a copy from Target, then return an unopened copy back to Gamestop... hmm... biggrin

This game actually looks really good. Hopefully it'll play as good as it looks, but I'm gonna wait for reviews, as the last few mobile AC games have been mediocre at best, and unplayable garbage at worst.

213  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Star Citizen, space combat simulation game (Chris Roberts' latest) on: October 20, 2012, 04:48:09 PM
I sent over my $30. If this game is half as good as he says it is, it'll be awesome. I've been dying to play a half decent Space Sim and this will definitely scratch that itch. Plus, it's not like he started this whole thing with a few pieces of concept are and said "WE WANT TO DO THIS GIVE US MONEY." He's actually got a playable build that, while not including everything he wants to do, is a decent enough vertical slice to show off to press and public to get them excited. I'm glad to see Chris Roberts back in the game. It's been too long.

And for what it's worth, I really enjoyed Freelancer. It's a shame that game didn't get the love it should have. biggrin
214  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: XBox 360 or PS3 on: October 20, 2012, 04:41:04 PM
The games themselves are pretty equal down the line, as far as content goes. Xbox has your Halo, Gears, and Forza games, but other than that, their first-party selection tends to be a bit lacking as of late. Playstation has a ton more first party content, with Infamous, Heavy Rain, Twisted Metal, Killzone, God of War, and tons of others. Plus, if you watch a lot of movies and want to start buying Blu-rays, the system will play those in addition to games, which is a nice touch. Also, online play and use of apps like Netflix and Hulu is free on PS3 (other than whatever subscription fee those apps entail), and the paid subscription (PS+) is actually amazing, getting you tons of discounts and free full games. Within a year of subscribing to PS+ I've gotten free copies of Little Big Planet 2, Infamous, Borderlands, among dozens of others, and they're available for you to play as long as you maintain a $50 a year subscription (which for what you get, is peanuts).

This late in the game you don't have too much about future exclusives as far as DLC is concerned. Most games which had huge lockouts on one system or another have had their contracts lapse, and additional content is pretty equal down the board. Occasionally the PS3 will end up with an inferior version of a game (such as Bayonetta or Skyrim) because many games are coded for the 360 and then ported over (as Xbox is the more popular platform).

Honestly, with the new consoles looming on the horizon, it's mostly down to a cost-benefit ratio. If you're into Kinect and are looking to play multiplayer games with your friends over Xbox Live (as most of my friends do), then the Xbox is probably going to be the best choice, but realize that you'll be paying for basic features that come free on PS3. If you want an all-in-one media device with free online and services and some decent first-party games that, while imperfect, tend to take more chances than their competitors, go for the PS3. If you asked me this question a few years ago, I'd say the Xbox, but right now, if I had to choose one, I'd go with a PS3, just because it does way more than the Xbox for free, and other than first-party titles, most other games are virtually the same experience on both consoles.

Hope this helps. biggrin

After I finished up writing a review for another game I've been playing, I finally got to sink some time into it. Holy crap, this game is hard. But in the best way possible. Every victory feels earned, and just when I feel like I'm starting to get a grip on my resources and tactics, they keep throwing curveballs at me to keep me on my toes (****ing Chryssalids. Nothing's worse than feeling like you're about to finish up a rescue mission, then having a bunch of them drop in, turn survivors into zombies and rush you.). I'm loving the meta-game surrounding all the tactics, but I wish it were easier to earn resources to build stuff. But I guess that just comes with the territory. Expect a full review in a few days time, though I'm sure you guys all know how great it is already. biggrin

Don't forget that you can buy it straight from the developer and get a DRM-free version and a Steam or GOG code.

While this is true, and I'd love to give him my money directly, I'd love to finally have another game to play on my Vita that isn't just a straight port of two year old game.

Steam's pre-load is up.  GMG hasn't started giving out keys yet, but on the plus side I'll have XCOM to pass the time with if they don't get the keys out early.

I'm a little worried that the version that GMG has is the European edition, which doesn't technically come out until Friday. Again, not a huge deal, because of XCOM, but still.

At least from a marketing perspective, this seems to be going over very poorly with Insomniac fans. We'll have to see more movies to see how much the tone has changed.
I don't understand why, Resistance was gritty and dark as hell, and fans seemed to love that game. Also, there's a trailer up on the front page for it now.

25% off - GMG25-1BW0K-K1A3G
lasts until 9/17
pretty sure the code is one use only, but they have had 25% off codes almost back to back

after code it works out to:
Borderlands 2 $35.99
Borderlands 2 Season Pass $22.50

Do it, I've purchased games from them before, it's awesome. I actually picked up Borderlands 2 from them during their 20% off sale... should have waited. I didn't know it works on the Season pass as well. I may have to bite.

I'll try to be playing what little I can in between class, homework, papers, this site... so, maybe 20-40 minutes a week, tops. If you want to add me on Steam, my ID is fencermusashi. Hit me up and I'll try to join you for a round or two. biggrin

That Nintendo TVii, besides the absolutely stupid name (it's like they knew it was stupid with the way they announced it), looks fantastic. This is the Nintendo I love to see. The Nintendo that takes an idea and tweaks it to make it distinctly Nintendo.

It sounds interesting, especially the weapons, and I hope they make a proper single-player campaign for it.  I think it would have been wise to keep the original look, though.  From the screenshots, it looks just like dozens of other games, and for this to succeed, they need something that stands out from the crowd.

They mentioned two modes: a full story mode, replete with sidestories for each character, and some unnamed mystery mode that they'll reveal at a later date. So there's that.

And while the cartoon style will be missed, the game does look great, and the environments still have that Insomniac feel. They showed off a few pictures of the different locations, like snow-covered mountains, middle eastern temples, and lush, vibrant jungles. I wouldn't worry too much, I think they got this one. smile

You know, I actually bit today. I normally don't touch Square Enix's iOS products with a ten foot pole, but considering that the price of the game is the same as a new copy of the DS game, and I've been dying to get further into it than the last time... After messing about in between classes today for a few minutes, I must say, it's not bad. Game looks slick as ever, controls work, and the game is already huge to begin with. It is a shame it's not a sequel, but at least they didn't phone it like some of their other ports (Chrono Trigger...)
