I have a feeling this game will be fine in the long run. Plants vs Zombies is an evergreen franchise, like Peggle, and I think they'll get people on board regardless of other games out at the time.

The settings that msduncan is using sound great to me.

What settings? Control settings? I'm wondering if this has controller support on the PC. Downloaded it and went thru the training missions last night and I'm thinking I'd rather play with a controller. And no I don't have a xbone yet so that isn't an option.

Yep, you can use a controller, and it's just as viable as using a mouse and keyboard.

Danganronpa 2 is officially confirmed for Fall of this year. biggrin

Apparently, Easy mode is the recommended mode to start with, while "normal" sounds like what should actually be called "hard" mode. I remember reviewers getting a fact sheet that recommended playing through the first time on easy.

Insane.
8  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC/360/XB1]Respawn's Titanfall on: February 17, 2014, 06:17:04 AM
Omg, this game. I can't wait for the full version. There's so much different crap you can do, and it's like they've accounted for everything.

If you jump toward your Titan from above while holding the use button, you'll drop right into the Titan's top hatch.

If you melee a doomed Titan with your titan, you'll grab the pilot inside and throw them like a rag doll.

If you sneak up to an opponent's Spectre, you can hack them -- which in turn turns that Spectre and any surrounding it into friendly AI that follow you around.

You can summon a Titan and cause it to land right on an enemy Titan.

In one match I blew up one Titan with my own Titan's cannon while it was doomed. I ejected, causing a nuclear explosion, killing another pilot, and as I was falling, I controlled my descent to land on yet another Titan, rip open the main compartment, and blow it up with my machine gun.

No multiplayer shooter has grabbed me like this one has. I've enjoyed a bunch, for sure, but I usually feel obligated to play those with friends. With Titanfall, I've been begging my friends nonstop to hop online with me. I cannot wait to see what the campaign multiplayer is like.
9  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Games you wish you could get into but can't on: February 03, 2014, 12:17:53 AM
The Elder Scrolls series. I love RPGs, but there's something about those games that gets me to buy them, play them for 6 hours, then never touch them again. Every. Single. Time.

Also, those ridiculously hard games like Dark Souls/Dragons Dogma. Anything that requires a wiki to get anywhere, really. I appreciate them for what they do, but I don't have the time nor the patience to devote to making any meaningful headway.

Is there any advantage/disadvantage to getting the box version vs. downloading from the store?  I suspect not but just curious.

I'm curious how the town portion impacts the rest of the game.  It seems like you have to keep it going to get access to better gear?  The good news is playing the demo I've found I seem to be more attached to the game in general because even if I have no time to play, I'll periodically check in and make sure my upgrades are done and start the next one.  I hope/assume that we're only seeing a limited version of the town in the demo?

The collector's edition of the box has a bunch of AR cards that don't do a whole lot other than play little cutscenes in your living room.

The town doesn't affect your ability to get better gear, but it means that you'll be able to buy items at save points. At first, you won't be able to buy anything, but as you unlock more stuff in the stores, you'll be able to buy potions, phoenix downs, and various weapons and accessories at a save point, rather than having to truck it back to the city to restock. It's not necessary, but it definitely helps.

Yeah, I totally get that. The thing is, this game makes me want to get a bunch of people together and just drink and have Nidhogg tournaments. I want this to blow up like Dota 2. Nidhogg needs to be the new eSport. It won't, but I think it deserves that distinction. It feels really, really good to play.

If you have any inclination toward local multiplayer, trippy aesthetics, or you're looking for a fighting game that does something different, I urge you to try Nidhogg. It's a bloody brilliant ballet of pixelated death, and it's only held back by its lack of content.

So 2 people who got their ps4s today via Taco Bell have reported that their machines are already bricked. One guy is from GAF, another is live streaming attempts to fix it on twitch (although both are getting return boxes from Sony).

This is why we do console launches, right? The excitement! The luck of the draw!

Man that sucks. Bricked from update?  I'd be so pissed.

This stuff happens though. Think of it this way: Taco Bell gave away a little over 4000 consoles. 2 reported cases of broken consoles. Even if we make that 20, that's half a percent. Way below a typical failure rate for new technology. Yes, some people's consoles will be bricked -- it happened to Vitas, Wii Us, 3DSs, it happens to computers, TVs, sound systems. Any company worth their salt will replace these immediately. It sucks, yes, but it happens. If a 1/4th of those units were broken, I'd say there's reason to be concerned. But technology is fallible, at least until it is developed by our future robot overlords.

Oh I thought they only gave out 5

Nope, they gave away one every 15 minutes. Checked the contest info, it was somewhere in between 4000-5000.

Guys, I realize you'll be busy with your Killzones and your Battlefields on the 15th, but check out this little clip for Super Motherload. Just got my review copy yesterday evening. I didn't have my Wii U hooked up to my video capture unit, so I didn't play too much, but I finished level 1-1. Haven't played enough to make a firm judgement yet, but Luigi still jumps like a nerd (even though he's my favorite character) and it's really weird hearing everyone meow in their cat suits. Look for my review on the 19th.

I was just thinking about this after reading the Batman review.  Pretty much everyone else grades from 70-100.  If I'm a publisher, why would I ever want to send you a prerelease copy of a game?  Even a decent score from you will drag down my metacritic/gamerankings average.  It might get you more readers as some people like to check out the outliers, but if I were a publisher, I'd cut you off.

If we are beholden to publishers over review scores then we should pack it in because we would be failing you as an audience and ourselves as critics.

I still keep going to my cousin-in-law to get a sense for what the casual gamers are hearing or feeling about this new generation.  This generation he had just a 360, which mostly played CoD World at War multiplayer and some Madden.

A month ago he hadn't heard anything about either console other than "oh they're coming out soon, aren't they?"

Last week, I asked what he thought about Titan Fall and he (and his cousin) had never heard of it.  I told him that if he's on the fence he might want to go for the PS4 unless his CoD buddies are all going Xbone, since the PS4 is cheaper and will probably have better graphics for the next CoD.  He responded that he was "probably going to go with the Xbox" because it has the Kinect and he thought his 5-year-old son would get a kick out of Kinect games.

Just one data point, of course, but he's a recurring reminder to me about how different the mainstream market is compared to all my online gaming news/forum sites.

Yep. One of my girlfriend's coworkers was asking me about whether she should get a PS4 or Xbox One for Christmas for her husband. I told her that it depends on how entrenched you are in their ecosystems, that the PS4 is $100 cheaper and is the more powerful system (at least on paper). She's ultimately deciding on the Xbox One, basically because he has an Xbox, and wants an Xbox One.

I assume that it will be like that for a majority of the average consumer. Brand loyalty, regardless of the facts.

Sometimes it's hard to remember that we're all in this giant echo chamber, and there are millions of other consumers out there who just don't care.

WELP after 13 hours of gameplay between yesterday and today, my game froze probably 4 times, glitched out three more times where I had to restart a mission because of some weird clipping bug or scripting error, and the last freeze finally did it. Save file is corrupt.

We're hitting up WB now, but man, this review will probably not be very kind.
