Re: TIVO, is there no way to hook it to a router to update? I have no land line. Offically the initial setup must be done over the phone. Then after the initial setup, you can use the network to update if you have a USB network adapter. But there is a way on some newer machines to force it, to do the initial update over the network.

Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / How to create a restore disk?
|

The easiest way to do what you're asking is to create a ghost image of the drive when it is clean. You could do it several ways:
The easiest would be to use Ghost to create the image on several CDs or another disk drive and then restore from those cds or another hard disk.
You could also do a base install and then ZIP that install, put it on a bootable DVD that has some sort of autoexecuting batch files that has commands to format the drive and then unzip the zip file onto the disk.
Using the XP disk as mentioned before is good, but drivers could be a problem, especially obscure hardware drivers. If her computer only has standard hardware, then you would be good to go with that if she is behind a router. If she isn't, then I would worry about outside intrusion. An unpatched XP setup only takes an average of 20 minutes to become infected from the time it is connected to the internet.

I've been a happy tivo-er for about 2 years now. Love it and wouldn't go back to regular television/vcr combo. question though? what's the "lifetime basic tivo" service you mentioned? I thought there was only one tivo service for subscribers? (granted, i haven't looked tivo's pricing plans since I got it) The "basic Tivo" thing comes with DVD/Tivo combo devices - it's not available for standalone Tivo units, and honestly, it's pretty useless. Only three days of program info, no season passes, no smart recording options, etc. Yeah. All the Tivo basic package is I have found out is a digital vcr. You tell it exactly when to record and it does. It does do stuff like pause and rewind Live TV. You can hit record during a show and it will record the next 30 minute segment. It would be decent for a secondary Tivo device, especially if you use the sharing option from the Home Media stuff. You do get Plus free for 45 days minus the Home Media stuff, so I've been using that. Its already caught some things for me that I didn't even realize where on. This morning it recorded an I Love Lucy show and I thought it was crazy. But it ended up that it got it from my Marx brothers wishlist and Harpo Marx was a special guest on the show. Nice.

There is supposed to be a update for CS coming up soon that will include bots and maybe new models.

School me, has anyone other than a Dem or Rep ever pulled more than 5% of the vote? Its never more than those two in the debates really...I just can't believe that these are my only two viable options. (and don't say Nader...the man doesn't use those new fangled PCs) I heard from somebody who got their 'early voter' card to mail back that there are TEN people running for president. TEN people. Maybe not ten, but it was at least 8 people. Short of the two and Nader, I hadn't heard of a single one of them. Why are they even trying? Just to give the US a 'choice'? There are a couple of hundred "candidates" every election. Most don't make it on the ballot and some aren't even eligible to be president. There was a news segment on on a couple of months ago about a man who was running as the old Prohibition party candidate. The entire party was his immediate family and a couple of friends.

Perfect timing. By the end of October, they'll be a bunch of games I'll want to buy (Grand Theft Auto, Mortal Kombat, Fable, etc). The deal applies to all games right? Not necessarily. Last time, there was a list of games that you had to choose from.

So, I joined the Tivo club yesterday. I picked up a Toshiba DVD player/80gb Tivo with component outputs for $80 at Bestbuy (after rebates). I spent most of last night trying finding a place with a telephone outlet that I could use just to set the thing up. I have it hooked up to my network now and that is working nicely. I spent this evening flipping through channels hitting the thumbs up and thumbs down buttons trying to get better suggestions. (I wish that they had a onscreen tally of all the users that rate a particular show.)
So far, I like it especially the pause function. My player came with free lifetime Tivo Basic, but I'm using a 45-day free trial of Tivo Plus. I'll probably end up paying for the service at the end of the trial. I like the whole season pass/wish list thing. Does anybody know how to record all the movies that appear on a certain channel? I'd like to record all the movies that come on TNT and Comedy Central, but I don't want to pick them out one by one.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Can someone get Morrowind threads from GG Google-cache?
|
on: October 13, 2004, 04:36:19 AM

Google Cache of the First PageUnfortunately, Google usually only caches the first page of threads. So that is all you're likely to get. The easiest way to find something in the cache is to reference a specific site. You do that for gonegold by typing in: site:gonegold.com So, to find that thread I simply typed in: site:gonegold.com 800mb morrowind Then click on the cache link near the end of the result. Its beside the Similar pages link.

The TweakUI thing seemed to do it. Thanks! You should consider putting a password on your account for security reasons, especially if you run your regular account as an Administrator. You'll never actually have to enter it because of TweakUI. It adds a little more protection against outside intruders.
