Counter is down to just a couple days left.

Something is going to happen in six days. At least, that’s what the Pronunciation Books Youtube channel keeps trying to tell us. Since it first began the countdown in early July, countless onlookers have come up with their own theories — and as it turns out, the one theory we all kind of ignored might be more true than we care to admit.

I expect my PSN catalog to be free. No way in hell am I paying to upgrade (even though most of the games are actually free on PS+)  slywink

Never joined PS+, but have well over $1,000 worth of PSN downloads on my PS3.

Still disappointed with the lack of BC this generation. Makes me consider going back to PC gaming again where no matter how old my games are they'll still work.

Too bad Sony couldn't have come out with a 'Premium' PS4 like they did with the PS3 and offer BC as an option for those willing to pay for it.

"PSone and PlayStation 2 are, of course, separate formats. PSone games run on the new models of PlayStation 2 through emulation rather than actual hardware,” explained Kutaragi-san. “Our PlayStation 3 will offer the same compatibility for all PlayStation software and this format will continue forever. Just like the situation with personal computers or music CDs, the format continues by incorporating it into new products."

84  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: how come we're not attacking syria? on: September 20, 2013, 09:22:37 AM
Russia planning on offering 'evidence' rebels used chemical weapons.

Regardless of who used them, I still say it's not in our national security interest to get involved in another civil war in the middle east, especially if the Assad regime follows through with destroying their chemical weapons.

Following Monday’s U.N. report on the findings of chemical weapons inspectors in Syria, the question no longer appears to be if chemical weapons were used in Syria last month, but who used them?

The U.S. and other western allies have a quick answer: the Syrian government. But, on Wednesday, the BBC reports, Russian Foreign Ministers Sergei Lavrov plans to present evidence to the Security Council “implicating Syrian rebels in a chemical attack" on August 21st. Russia Today, however, goes one step further reporting that, according to Lavrov, “Russia will provide the UN Security Council with data proving that the chemical weapons near Damascus were used by the opposition.”

86  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PS3/PS4] Reborn on: September 20, 2013, 09:14:34 AM
Acttil, the Los Angeles-based company formed by former NIS America employees in May, has teamed up with Anaheim-based game developer Elemental Labs to develop a real-time, weapon-based 3D action RPG for PlayStation 4 and PS3 called Reborn.

In a statement, CEO Franz Tissera said Elemental Labs wants to “satisfy the action hero in all of us while recapturing the magic, imagination, depth, and nostalgia of the classic RPGs that we enjoyed growing up”.

Set in Neo-Tokyo 2188, Reborn stars a future version of Japanese swordsman Musashi Miyamoto. It has real-time combat but lots of RPG elements, including “an experience and leveling system, progressive License Board, rare loot and various character classes”.

The Unreal-engine based game has been in development in his garage for nine months, and will take to Kickstarter shortly to chase $150,000 in funding ahead of a northern autumn 2014 launch. New publisher Acttil is also involved with the project.

No mention of multiplayer but then again they have a year to add it if the demand is there.
87  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Grand Theft Auto V on: September 16, 2013, 06:16:51 PM
Looks like Sony and Ms have different approaches on people who got a copy early.

Talk about a tale of two cities. Sony and Microsoft have very different outlooks on the way they deal with their gaming communities. Sony offers free multiplayer, a helping hand to indies and a free pass to early adopters of GTA V, which is the complete opposite of what Microsoft is doing with anyone who has early access to Rockstar's open-world action game (that's not to mention what Microsoft thinks of multiplayer and indie devs).

We've reported on Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive going to some far extremes to keep people from playing GTA V before the official street date, this includes banning live-streamers, shutting down YouTube accounts, banning videos and hitting websites (like this one) with legal goons carrying cease and desists letters.

Helping Take Two Interactive take out the trash is none other than everyone's favorite big, bad, corporate overlord, Microsoft. As it was reported on in the thread containing the (now removed) videos of uncensored sex, airplanes and car crashes, Microsoft has been aiding and abetting Take Two in their own form of vigilante copyright justice.

Microsoft has gone over and beyond to stop pre-access to GTA V by console banning gamers. Yes, console banning them. Whether you were playing GTA V from a legitimate copy or you torrented the game that recently leaked, Microsoft has a zero tolerance policy on anyone playing the game that breaks the terms of service before the official street date. This should come as no surprise given that the company did the exact same thing when Halo 4 leaked early, too, as reported by Kotaku.

Sony on the other hand is doing right by gamers. If you have a legitimate copy of GTA V and want to play online, they aren't actively seeking you out to punish you, as it was noted in passing by Sony's worldwide studio boss, Shuhei Yoshida

Starting to sound like our rush to war in Iraq over their WMDs.

At lease we have evidence this time around!

Does anyone really believe the Assad government launched chemical weapons attacks against rebels and civilians?

That virtually every politician and pundit talks about the attacks as if it were proven they occurred and that Assad’s government perpetrated them is beyond surreal. U.N. weapons inspectors say that they won’t even be able to confirm that chemical weapons were used for two more weeks. Yet, the Obama administration says it is not only certain the attack occurred, but that Assad’s government launched it.

This despite strong suspicion that it was the rebels, not the Assad government that launched the chemical weapons attack earlier this year. As reported by Shaun Waterman in the Washington Times on May 6,

“Carla del Ponte, a member of the U.N. Independent International Commission of Inquiry on Syria, told Swiss TV there were “strong, concrete suspicions but not yet incontrovertible proof,” that rebels seeking to oust Syrian strongman Bashar al-Assad had used the nerve agent.”

The rebels stood to gain far more from last month’s chemical weapons attack than Assad. The government had the upper hand in the two-year-old revolution. The attack would increase the chances that an outside force like the U.S. would join the struggle on the rebels’ side. Judge Andrew Napolitano is skeptical that the attack occurred at all and, if it did, that Assad perpetrated it.

Production has started..

Syfy’s newest original scripted series Helix from Sony Pictures Television began production this past weekend in Montreal, Canada. The 13-episode drama is executive produced by Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Outlander), Steven Maeda (Lost, The X-Files) who is also showrunner, and Lynda Obst (Sleepless in Seattle, Contact). Cameron Porsandeh, who wrote the pilot, will serve as a Co-Executive Producer.

Helix is an intense thriller about a team of scientists from the Centers for Disease Control who travel to a high-tech research facility in the Arctic to investigate a possible disease outbreak, only to find themselves pulled into a terrifying life-and-death struggle that may hold the key to mankind’s salvation or total annihilation.  However, the lethal threat is just the tip of the iceberg, and as the virus evolves, the chilling truth begins to unravel.

I still play MAG almost daily.

There's a good number of people playing, not the kind of numbers Blacks Ops pulls off, but enough to keep the game going a little longer.

Considering SOCOM on PSP is still up with about 12 players on average (nearly a decade after release) it's still a shame to see a game only a few years old go under that still has a decent following.

Our clan has gone from 3 members in the last 2 weeks to over 30 now.

There's no notice on the news page about the servers being taken down.

Still a shame. I'm going to go on a limb and say MAG is in my top 3 favorite games of all time.. all the hours I spent upgrading my character, going into veteran mode, and of course all the DLC I paid for.. all going to disappear.

Youtube channel been counting down the days to something. They're at 60 days left now.

A BSG reboot? Half-Life 3? Or just someone with too much time on their hands?

For the past week, a mysterious YouTube channel has been counting down to, well, something. According to the blogging sleuths over at The Daily Dot, this “something” is a brand new TV series of Battlestar Galactica. Cast your eye over the evidence and judge for yourself…

For the past three years, the Pronunciation Book YouTube channel has offered audio clips of innocuous words and phrases spoken in English. A few days ago, things started to get interesting.

“Something is going to happen in 77 days,” the video promised ominously, accompanied by around ten seconds of dead air. Since then, each subsequent clip has teased additional clues which have been whipping various online forums into a frenzy.

James Woods weighed in:

James Woods, one of Hollywood’s best-known actors, took to Twitter over the weekend to decry President Obama’s impromptu defense of Trayvon Martin, the 17-year-old killed by George Zimmerman in self-defense in Florida, and suggested that race was not an issue in the acquittal.

Mr. Obama’s statements on Friday: “When Trayvon Martin was first shot, I said that this could have been my son. Another way of saying that is, ‘Trayvon Martin could have been me 35 years ago.’”

And Mr. Woods‘ tweeted response: “Just curious. Does the president of the United States have any advice for other teenage boys in America? Wounded warriors for example,” Newsmax reported.

Another tweet from Mr. Woods: “The only reason people lock their car doors when Obama walks by is they are afraid he’ll tax them to death."

AT&T is getting into the cloud-storage game -- and giving away free upgrades to entice new customers.

Normally, signing up for an AT&T Locker account nets you 5GB of free cloud storage. However, for a limited time, you can get your account upgraded to 50GB at no charge.

Should you bother? After all, what the heck is AT&T Locker? It's a fairly basic cloud-storage service, one built primarily for backing up your mobile media (photos, videos, and so on) -- but also useful for basic file archiving and sharing.

Just signed up and upgraded to the 50GB plan. Not a whole lot this day in age, but it's still free so why not?

When was the last time you logged into MAG?

PlanetSide 2 is an MMO and PC only at the moment. May have to be my new go to game after MAG.

Should have clarified that. Even so, the closest 'regular' console game I'm aware of is Resistance 1, which pulled off 32vs32. Even Battlefield 3 is still only 24 players. (Which is smaller than one team size alone in MAG.)

Still sad as looking at the 200 hours, veteran mode status, all the exp and perks I've worked hard for, and of course the money on the DLC.. all going away soon.

109  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Sony shutting down MAG & SOCOM Servers on: July 17, 2013, 03:32:18 PM
Sony will pull the plug for online services for PlayStation 3 games MAG, SOCOM: Confrontation, and SOCOM 4 on January 28, 2014, the company announced today in a tweet from the PlayStation account.
"Advisory: Online multiplayer services for MAG, SOCOM Confrontation, and SOCOM 4 will be ending on 01/28/14," Sony said.

MAG and SOCOM: Confrontation require an Internet connection to play, meaning the first-person shooters won't work once the online services are removed. SOCOM 4, on the other hand, features an offline mode.

Sony was not immediately available to comment on whether or not it will continue to sell MAG and SOCOM: Confrontation even though they won't be playable.

If it wasn't bad enough they closed down Zipper Interactive and destroyed any hope we had of getting a MAG 2, now they're closing down the servers for my all-time favorite PS3 game, MAG.

As an active online player, this is a tremendous disappointment. Even if I take a break from gaming, MAG is the one game I always came back to. Even years later there's no game that's pulled off the kind of battlefields (up to 128vs128) that MAG has.

Since there are no bots or offline mode, looks like we'll be left with just a coaster.

However, a teenager when confronted by an adult demanding to know what he's doing walking around his own neighborhood might result in a whupping being tossed the adult's way by any number of non-criminal teens...especially when that adult then goes for a gun.

I have some serious doubts that Zimmerman confronted Martin in a non-threatening manner.  I also have some serious doubts that Zimmerman was ever in any more danger than getting his ass kicked.  To me, it sounds like both participants were practicing their Stand Your Ground rights...but only one had a gun...and the will (some would probably say the lack thereof) to use it.

Except he wasn't in his own neighborhood.

Zimmerman as a community watch leader saw someone he didn't recognize and reported it. He did his job.

What happened after is another story, but as none of us where actually there to see what happened, it's not even worth speculating. He had his trial, the jury was able to look past all the race baiting, put their emotions aside, and ended up finding him not guilty.

Time to move on.

Looks like not all was lost when Sony closed Zipper Interactive.. maybe we'll still see a MAG 2 one day.

H-Hour: World's Elite™ is a tactical, team-based military shooter in which cooperation among players is required for success. A run and gun lone wolf approach quickly results in your death; only by cooperating with your team can you hope to achieve victory. But so many players who would love military shooters are discouraged by what they perceive as brutal competition from day one. Don’t worry. We’re including mechanisms that not only allow you to play with players at your skill level but teach and encourage you how to play tactically.

The design philosophy is simple: bullets are deadly, and any character not wearing body armor or staying out of the line of fire will not last long. There are no absolutes in lethality, but in H-Hour, you won't take a shot to the head and keep fighting while you miraculously regenerate health. If you are looking for a change of pace from reckless play and want a little more realism in your combat, you’ll love the feeling of H-Hour and the game will monitor your performance, point out what you did right and wrong, and offer strategies for your improvement.

Reality is a theme of H-Hour. The game is inspired by real world events—the personal stories of Special Operations Forces—repurposed and staged in new and equally deadly locations for the purposes of preserving national security. Environments emphasize all the filth, chaos, and visual disruption common to many of the locales where savages plot and launch their insurgencies or terrorism campaigns.

All animations are sourced directly from Special Operations veterans who bring their expertise and decades of combat experience into the motion capture studio and their war stories into our offices. It’s hard not to be inspired when you work with these heroes.

8 Days to go to reach their 200K goal.

The way I looked at it was I could spend $60 on Call of Duty for the 360, or the same price for the PS3 version. The difference was, one was free to play while one had a monthly fee.

Still enjoy my 360 for singleplayer gaming though. Played the hell out of the GoW bots.

Just that while PS3, Vita, Wii, Wii U, PC, and even iOS and Android are all free to play online, Xbox is the only one charging for it.
