41  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Subway to remove chemical from bread on: February 06, 2014, 12:48:02 AM
Subway said today it is removing a chemical used in yoga mats and shoe soles from the bread of it its popular sandwiches after a food blogger got more than 50,000 signatures in a petition drive.

"The complete conversion to have this product out of the bread will be done soon," Subway said in a statement. The company said the move had nothing to do with the protest and that it was "already in the process of removing azodicarbonamide as part of our bread improvement efforts."

But Vani Hari, the activist blogger who takes credit for the removal of yellow dyes in at least three of Kraft's Mac & Cheese products for children, was declaring victory after she had been researching the company's bread ingredients since 2012.

"I commend Subway for finally responding to me and now over 57,000 concerned citizens. Their swift action is a testament to what power petitions and individuals who sign them can have," Hari said. "I'd like to note that current Subway sandwiches still have this ingredient, and urge everyone not to eat their sandwich bread until they have finally removed the chemical."

Hari said she was shocked to find azodiacarbonamide, a plastic-based additive, on Subways' food labeling.

The World Health Organization has linked this chemical additive to respiratory issues, allergies and asthma, and it is banned in Europe and Australia. Azodiacarbonamide is legal in the United States and Canada.

"It helps ... produce the air within the foam of a yoga mat," said Hari. "It does the same thing for bread."

Had no idea they were using this in their bread until today, and I usually eat at Subway once a week. Good to know Subway is changing it.
42  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Amazon Prime price hike coming? on: February 05, 2014, 10:54:46 PM
NewEgg rolling out their own version of Prime without the streaming.

While Amazon's debating whether or not it should hike Prime subscription fees in the US, now its decision may have to take into consideration a potential competitor. This morning, Newegg introduced Premier, a $50 shipping service that aims to cope with the likes of Amazon Prime. For that yearly fee, Newegg promises to get stuff to your doorstep in three days or less, as well as a number of other benefits including no restocking fees, free returns and dedicated customer service. You will, however, miss out on the Instant Video streaming offered through Prime, but this also means you'll end up saving $29 per year -- which is something that could make sense to folks who are already subscribed to Netflix.
43  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: Marijuana. Just watched a documentary. on: February 05, 2014, 03:35:22 PM
I was debating whether to add more PHOT or to sell it and move to something else. Obviously a $250 investment turning into $2000 isn't that bad at all. If I had just let my $250 stock sit there, I'd be selling today for $2k. Not too shabby. As I have a crappy job and don't make a lot of cash, $2000 to someone like me is a good bit of money.

I also had 20,000 shares of HEMP last year. Sold that as it was never going up. Except now of course.

Some of these new pot tickers may be a way to make a quick buck or two. I bought $135 worth of USEI two days ago. Not a lot of money but look where are today. All because of news they are entering the marijuana field.

Might have to start a new thread on penny stocks.

Anyone investing in any of these Marijuana 'penny' stocks? (MJNA, PHOT, HEMP, etc.)

Are you investing in them? I am not that brave. Even if they were stronger than they appear to be now, one law change and they tank.

I bought 5,000 shares of GrowLife ("PHOT") a week ago. It's trading at about 5 cents a share. Really don't see it going any less than 4 cents, so even if it never takes off I'm out a few dollars but not a big enough of an investment where I lose everything.
On the other hand, if GrowLife takes off.. PS4 and Xb1 paid off!  A gamble where not much to lose but a lot to gain, IMO.

This is their website:

And they are opening October 1st.

I hate looking back at this as I sold my shares in PHOT shortly after that post. Wish I could go back in time and buy 2,000,000 shares @ 5 cents again. Hard to believe it's only been a couple of months and it took off as fast as it did.

Was anyone so lucky to have owned any of these marijuana stocks before all the hype hit?

Hopefully existing customers will be grandfathered in.

I can see them adding an influx of new customers just by announcing the price hike date but assuring customers they'll stay at that rate until they decide to leave. If they come back again, they pay the new rates.

Even though Helix has taken my favorite current TV show slot, I'm still keeping up with Vampire Diaries.

Good twist at the end of last episode with Katherina. Just when you think she's finally found a heart.. not so much. Her and Klaus would make a good team.

48  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Court affirms Mass. murderer's right to get sex change in prison on: January 22, 2014, 02:32:05 AM
A federal appeals court on Friday upheld a judge's ruling granting a taxpayer-funded sex change operation for a transgender inmate serving a life sentence for a murder conviction, saying receiving medically necessary treatment is a constitutional right that must be protected "even if that treatment strikes some as odd or unorthodox."

U.S. District Judge Mark Wolf ruled in 2012 that the state Department of Correction must provide sex reassignment surgery for Michelle Kosilek, who was born as Robert Kosilek and is serving a life sentence for the killing of his wife in 1990.

The Department of Correction challenged the ruling at the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Its lawyers argued Kosilek has received adequate treatment for gender identity disorder, including female hormone treatments, laser hair removal and psychotherapy. Prison officials said those treatments have eased the stress and anxiety felt by Kosilek, and they argued it was unnecessary to heed advice from independent medical experts who recommended the 64-year-old undergo the sex change surgery as the next step of treating her intense gender identity disorder.

The Department of Correction also argued prison officials were concerned about protecting Kosilek, who's in an all-male prison, from sexual assaults if she were allowed to complete her transformation into a woman.

Your tax dollars hard at work again.

50  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Smoking increases chances of child being gay in adulthood, study claims on: January 20, 2014, 11:47:05 PM
Women who smoke or lead a stressful life during their pregnancy can influence their child’s sexuality and IQ, a neuroscientist has claimed.

A pregnant woman’s lifestyle is believed to have an impact on the development of their babies – with drinking, taking drugs and even living in an area with a lot of pollution affecting children in later life.

Dick Swaab, professor of neurobiology at Amsterdam University, suggests drinking and taking drugs can lower a child’s IQ while taking synthetic hormones and smoking can increase the likelihood of girls being lesbians or bisexual.

Having more older brothers is also thought to increase the chance that boys will be gay, possibly because of the development of the mother’s immune system to have stronger responses to male hormones with each son born.

“Pre-birth exposure to both nicotine and amphetamines increases the chance of lesbian daughters,” Swaab told the Sunday Times.

“Pregnant women suffering from stress are also more likely to have homosexual children of both genders because their raised level of the stress hormone cortisol affects the production of foetal sex hormones.”

What a Dick.

Anyone else watch this?

I enjoyed it even though my nose was so stuffed up I couldn't breathe half the time lol.  Well paced and pretty creepy. .I don't see how they can sustain a story like this for an extended period of time, so that will be interesting.

If there are approximately 120 people on base, and they kill off, say 4 or 5 every episode, that should give us enough for 2 seasons. Then at the end of season 2 they send a new batch of people to find out what happened to the last batch, rinse repeat and recycle. It can go on forever!

Hell of a show so far as I'm hooked. Wouldn't have expected anything less from the guy who did Battlestar Galactica.

They borrowed a little from 24 in Season 1, so why not some from Saw for Season 2?

Finally a year and a half later.

Starz, for its latest original series, will set sail on its most comprehensive sampling and marketing campaign to date.

Executive-produced by Transformers overseer Michael Bay, Black Sails will make its U.S. linear premiere on Starz on Jan. 25 at 9 p.m. (ET/PT). The show, which has already been renewed for a sophomore season, will air in more than 120 countries/territories worldwide.

Prior to the linear launch of the prequel to Robert Louis Stevenson’s classic Treasure Island, Starz will engage in a multiplatform sampling initiative and linear preview effort beginning Jan. 18 that encompasses online and on-demand platforms, including traditional multichannel/MVPD afiliates and non-traditional digital partners such as Amazon Instant Video, iTunes Podcasts, Machinima, Maxim and Xbox Video.

Starz's pirate series, Black SailsBuilding on gambits it has deployed to introduce other originals, including DaVinci’s Demons, Magic City and the Spartacus franchise, Starz’s unprecedented flag-waving for Black Sails is aimed at boosting awareness for the show and the brand, viewing and ultimately consumer acquisition of the service.

60  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Steven Seagal says he may run for Arizona governor on: January 05, 2014, 10:17:29 PM
Action-movie star Steven Seagal says he is considering a run for Arizona governor.

The "Marked for Death" actor told KNXV-TV that he is considering a shot at the state's highest office and has had a talk about the bid with the self-proclaimed toughest sheriff in America.

The 61-year-old made the comments while talking about his newly released reality series "Steven Seagal - Lawman: Maricopa County."

Seagal teamed up with Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio for the show that was shot in Arizona and airs on cable TV's Reelz Channel.

The martial arts expert is a member of Arpaio's posse, made up of 3,000 unpaid civilians. He also has been deputized with sheriff's offices in New Mexico, Texas and Louisiana and says he wants to increase border security.

I hope not.. not because of politics, but because I like his movies and him being gone for 4-8 years means by the time he gets back to movies again he'll be playing in Grumpy Old Men 3.
Don't need a deju vu of Arnold Schwarzenegger who left Terminator fans hanging.

63  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: Duck Dynasty on: December 21, 2013, 07:19:49 AM
The Stand with Phil Robertson facebook page already has 1.4 million likes.

I'm sure A&E will bring him back, especially with the family saying they can't imagine the show going on without him. They pull in too many viewers to simply pull the plug on the show.

Personally, could care less about Duck Dynasty or what Phil Robertson thinks. He has his own personal views, that he talked about outside of the show and off the air, so who cares if he's a born again Christian who thinks homosexuality is a sin?

When President Obama said he believed marriage was between a man and a woman, that was his own personal belief. (Which has changed it seems.) I don't agree with it, but completely respect his right to think whatever he wants.

Don't like Robertson? Seems like the easiest solution to that is simply to not watch the show. (Which ironically are probably the same ones complaining.) Apparently his supporters like him all the more and aren't going to ditch the show anytime soon. If anything, the opposite has happened.

Maricopa County, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio has issued a bold threat to any unpatriotic inmates in his jails.

According to CBS5, Arpaio is threatening to put any inmates who deface or vandalize the American flag on a diet of only bread and water. Arpaio told CBS5 10 inmates are already on the bread-and-water diet.

Each cell is getting a sticker of an American flag. Any inmate who vandalizes the flag will be punished with the restricted diet.

In keeping with the patriotic theme, Arpaio has ordered that the playing of God Bless America and the National Anthem be done daily in every jail facility over the public address system and for all the inmates, regardless of national origin, to hear and sing-a-long.

67  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Sex-change parliamentarian is now a lesbian on: November 20, 2013, 06:09:37 PM
Britain's first sex-change parliamentarian has told how she became a lesbian after she was raped.

Former UKIP MEP Nikki Sinclaire, 45, was born a boy but had gender reassignment surgery on the NHS 18 years ago.

Today she revealed how four years after the operation, just as she was beginning to find women attractive, she was raped by a man, and subsequently realised she was a lesbian.

Miss Sinclaire said that she had begun to feel attracted to women shortly before the attack, and had her first sexual experience with a woman with a lesbian she met playing pool in Liverpool.

She said she put the 'scary' idea that she might be attracted to women out of her mind, but said the rape made her 'very anti-men', and contributed to her realising she was a lesbian soon afterwards.

Does that mean she's straight again?

One major AI flaw killed AOE 2 for me that I couldn't even have fun playing it anymore.

Anytime a computer player sent an army across the map - they kept moving until they got to their destination, not stopping to defend themselves. (No "auto-attack" function.)
You could hack and slice away at their defenseless troops until their was nobody left.

At least AOE 3 fixed that.

Leaning towards PS4.

PS Plus still seems like a better deal than Live, plus if I choose to be a "free" member I can still play MMO's or use Netflix and Hulu.
79  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / RIP Blockbuster on: November 06, 2013, 07:00:26 PM
Was only a matter time but still sad to see them finally close the last doors.

DISH Network Corporation today announced that its subsidiary, Blockbuster L.L.C., will end its retail and by mail DVD distribution operations by early-January 2014. The company will close its approximately 300 remaining U.S.-based retail stores, as well as its distribution centers.

"This is not an easy decision, yet consumer demand is clearly moving to digital distribution of video entertainment," said Joseph P. Clayton, DISH president and chief executive officer. "Despite our closing of the physical distribution elements of the business, we continue to see value in the Blockbuster brand, and we expect to leverage that brand as we continue to expand our digital offerings."

The Blockbuster By Mail service will end mid-December and will serve existing customers until that time.
