3401  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / What happened to 94.9 Zeta??! on: February 14, 2005, 12:40:19 AM
Google is my enemy. That article needs registration anyway.

Checking yahoo news I found what I was looking for:
http://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/local/southflorida/sfl-211zetamega,0,6408020.story

Quote
Rock n' roll died Friday on Zeta 4. Simultaneously, a new "Spanglish" format was born.

I hadn't realized Zeta had been around for 30 years (Since I'm 23 myself) and is now being replaced by a foreign language station.
This really gets to me.
3402  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / What happened to 94.9 Zeta??! on: February 13, 2005, 11:20:56 PM
I realize this is a far shot since we are all over the country, but here in South Florida (Miami area) we had a rock station called 94.9 ZETA, which was also broadcasted over other parts of the country as well as around the world. It's been around for ages and is the only real alternative/rock station in Miami. Now it's been replaced by Mega 94.9 "Latino and Proud" spanish station. (As if there weren't enough spanish stations in Miami already.)
Going to the site, 949zeta.com brings up the mega 94.9. Just turned on my radio and there it was playing spanish music.
WTF happened?!

3405  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / KOTOR 2 - anyone seen it yet? on: February 11, 2005, 03:01:35 AM
I still would never pay more than $39.99 for a PC game. Anyone remember the good old days (which wasn't so long ago) where ALL new PC releases came out at $39.99? Then games like C&C generals came out setting new standards of $49.99.
Then Valve pushing the limit at 54.99 for Half-Life 2 and not even giving us a manual or cd cases.

Even still if you wait a week or two the new release is bound to hit $39.99 or so. I got HL2 for $40 at Circuit City.

Btw I know my post was a little off topic but I had a hard time resisting on how "39.99 is a good deal" for a new PC game.
3406  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Anyone been on a cruise? on: February 11, 2005, 02:57:53 AM
I haven't been on a cruise in over 10 years (feeling old just thinking about it) but it was definitely an enjoyable experience.
We went out for around 2 or 3 days on a gambling cruise so we didn't get dropped off anywhere.
There was a huge pool, a restraunt and bar, plenty of games, your own room with TV, and of course the gambling and singing area.

Now this post has got me wanting to go on another cruise. I can only imagine that getting dropped off somewhere (like the Bahamas) would only be a great experience. Spending time out on the sea in a mini-city and then getting a vacation at some island (hopefully your "friend" is a hot chick  ) to get away from everyday life seems like a dream.

Definitely would recommend a cruise vacation, unless there have been some MAJOR changes (hopefully for the better) over the past 10 years or so.
3407  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Quick Doom 3 (Xbox) question about upcoming release on: February 10, 2005, 07:16:51 AM
One question I have (for the expansion) is do they have any plans for bot support? It's a shame that Doom 3 shipped without bots especially since the same guy who did the Quake 3 bots is one of the programmers on Doom 3. Especially for the console version of Doom 3 with less than 10% of Xbox users having Live, something like bots to keep the singleplayer replayablity alive is a must.
I'm hoping they add bots to Doom 3, although I can't say I'd be suprised if they didn't.

3409  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Counter-Strike Source Sprays on: February 07, 2005, 08:11:59 AM
Do you know of any programs that can be used to convert custom pictures to counter-strike source format? (I read they need to be 128x128 or 256x256) I dont have a clue about photoshop or anything but something easy to just convert it to work in cs source?
3410  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / CS: Source on: February 04, 2005, 11:13:38 PM
Maybe we could borrow one of the public servers if we get our times right. If there are 10 of us here we can find an empty public server with 10 slots and all join about the same time. That way the server would be all ours and we'd more than likely get a good speed server considering how many hundreds of empty servers there are running 24/7.

Now to show how new I am to CS, how do you defuse the bomb? I've always been playing as terrorists, planting the bomb easy enough, but then I got stuck on the counter terrorists one time and I never thought twice about how to defuse the bomb UNTIL I had to do it! (Of course it blew up on me as I fumbled with all the keys on the keyboard not finding anything that would work, the use key, all the weapon keys, nothing..) Don't see any readmes in the Counter-Strike directory.. so now I'm really only playing terrorists.

So how do you defuse the bomb?
3411  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Republic Commando Demo is up!!! on: February 04, 2005, 11:07:00 PM
Quote
reminded me a lot of Terra Nova...
Now THERE is a classic! We are really showing our age with that one. I still have the box, manual and cd all in perfect condition like they were just bought yesterday. Unfortunately I haven't played in years because I've been unable to get it to work under Windows XP. Seems it's a hardcore DOS game.
What a great game though. Whatever happened to Liquid Glass Studios (I think that was the name of the developer) anyway?

Back on Republic Commando to stay on topic, is anyone here willing to lay down $50 for it? I definitely see this game being picked up at $29.99 but anything more IMO is pushing it too much because there are plenty of other FPS games on the market that offer squadplay as well.
I tried playing again and after about 5 minutes I got bored and tired of the helmet view again, right where you get to that fortress and the enemies start jumping out of the walls. Blast.. blast.. blast! Over and over, until I got bored. my teammates really did require too much handholding. I told one of them to snipe at a certain location and he stayed there while the enemies jumped out of the wall from behind him and he didn't even move until I had to tell him to come back to me. How can you get attached to a squad (as they say you will) when they have the intelligence of a small child who has to rely on an adult to tell him what to do?
3412  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Elektra - $30 for the DVD?! on: February 04, 2005, 04:33:26 PM
I'm not buying it for the movie, I'm buying it for Jennifer Garner

That's pretty interesting if ever new release dvd has a suggested retail of $29.99, never in my life heard that before.
Then again I've never looked at any preorder information, except maybe blockbuster that over-price their dvds anyway. (Usually around $22.99)

Whenever I go to Best Buy their new dvds are usually around $15.88 and then after a couple days they jump up to around $19.99, which I always assumed was the standard retail price.

In any case, I could never justify paying $30 for a dvd. $20 OK, but $30, that's pushing it too far.
3413  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Republic Commando Demo is up!!! on: February 03, 2005, 11:19:47 PM
Not a bad game at all, although I'm having a little trouble getting used to the helmet view. Not used to all that clutter on my screen during a first person shooter.

It's nice to see it's not another game that pits you against the world (Doom 3) and you are part of a squad. I'm not into the "handwalking" (as IGN called it) you have to do with your squad as if anything I'd rather be just a regular grunt and let one of the AI players be the Commander. I don't like issuing orders and having to worry about my squad AND myself in a FPS. The more automated the AI, the better, IMO.

Even still a very decent demo from what I played. Not sure if it's going to be worth $40-$50 I'll probably wait until it hits around the $30 mark before picking it up.
3414  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Elektra - $30 for the DVD?! on: February 03, 2005, 11:14:57 PM
According to this article (http://dvd.ign.com/articles/584/584944p1.html over at IGN, the Elektra DVD will be out on April 5 for $29.98.
Since when have new dvds cost more than $19.99?? I hope this isn't going to be a new trend.
I was going to buy Elektra (can't get over the red suit) but not for $30. Usually Walmart has all the new releases on sale the day they come out for around $15 (then they go back up to the NORMAL $19.99 rate).
3415  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Enterprise be dead... on: February 03, 2005, 06:10:46 PM
I never really could get into Enterprise like I could Deep Space Nine. Just didn't have the same feel although I think it's a shame whenever a tv series goes.

One thing I've always been curious about is how do they determine how many viewers there are? They said Enterprise had a low rating of just about 2.5 million viewers. Where do they get that number from? Do they "know" we are watching it just by having the channel on or what?
3416  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Queued Downloading Sites - Any? on: February 02, 2005, 07:45:09 PM
http://www.filefront.com is everything that File Planet SHOULD be. No registration and no waiting (at least most of the time).
I'm not sure about the queued downloads since I've only downloaded one or two files at a time, but every time I download a demo/mod/map/etc from FileFront there is never a line to wait in and the downloads are at very fair speeds (I get on average 100k/second).

3418  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Games with Leadership/Cooperative AI? on: February 01, 2005, 02:52:58 PM
I'm looking for any games that feature some type of Leadership AI, whether it's a first person shooter or a real-time strategy I like them both. The game I have waited years and years for is Team Fortress 2 when John C was quoted as saying "Bots will play as Commanders, Squad Leaders, and all other available classes."

There are three first person shooters I have seen that feature some type of leadership AI;
Quake 3 - While it's nothing to write home about, it is interesting that you can make a bot the leader of your team and not have to worry about issuing orders to the team. Wish the Unreal Tournament series could do the same because it seems they rely on a human player to tell them what to do. The "freelance" option is a joke, especially in capture the flag games.

Space Hulk 2 Veangeance of the Blood Angels - old, old, old game. In the first couple of missions you were part of the squad, and you and your AI comrades were instructed by a Commander who would tell you what to do.
He might instruct you to go to point A and protect the area, while one AI comrade goes to get a relic, another one guards him, and the last one goes to the extraction point.
If the AI player going to get the relic is killed, the Commander will then have another AI player or you go to get the relic instead.
The leadership AI varies as the game goes on and plays according to what happens. Usually you can never trust one of your AI comrades to get a relic because the aliens always kill him.
This was years and years ago, but it's still one of the best times in my life I've had playing a singelplayer game. I wish more games would have followed the Space Hulk series.

Swat 3 Tactical Game of the Year - AI element leaders. You can play any combination of human/AI players on a team, and you don't have to be the element leader. You can leave it up to a bot to lead the SWAT team in and issue orders to all players, including you.
So much more relaxing to play IMO so you don't have to keep micromanaging your team. I hate that. "Open door, flash grenade, move in, clear area." I just want to worry about myself and not the entire team. The addition of AI element leaders was a huge plus and I wish the new developers (Irrational) for Swat 4 would keep this feature, but of course, they seem more multiplayer oriented and from the interviews/information out there, it looks like the singleplayer swat team will rely on the human player to get the job done.

And three real-time strategy games I know of that have sort of a cooperative AI:

Rise of Nations - You can share control of your base with an AI player. Nice feature especially for beginners. The AI doesn't seem to do much about attacking, but they definitely build up your base and build an army for you.

Submarine Titans - Old game, but it had an option to toggle AI assistance on. The AI would help you economically as well as with your military.

Tzar Burden of the Crown - old game also, same type of setting as Submarine Titans.
You can configure "Economic assistance" "Military Assistance" or "Full AI assistance"
The AI shares control of your base and units, attacks and builds accordingly.

That's all the games I know of but I'd really like to find any others.
Any suggestions?
3419  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / PayPal Question on: February 01, 2005, 02:42:32 AM
You are right it's probably your banking account. It's been a long time since I signed up with PayPal but I remember running into similiar problems. They want your credit card AND banking account registered with them. If you don't you had something like a $500 limit until you became a full member.
Again it's been a long time so I don't remember exactly how it works, but since becoming a full member I haven't had any problems at all, with my credit card or bank account being listed with them. (Except of course their OUTRAGEOUS "transaction" fees, as if them taking 5% of our Ebay profits wasn't enough they have to take money from Paypal too. By the time they get finished with us on Ebay and Paypal together we're lucky if we have enough money just for the shipping!   )
3420  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / CS: Source on: February 01, 2005, 02:12:25 AM
I'm new too. Brushing up (starting out I should say) my skills by practicing against the bots. I'm actually suprised at how good the AI is, that could just be the newbie in me talking, but even still, they seem like a good step above any of the third party bots that were available for the original counter-strike.
3421  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Why is it so hard for them to honor our rebate requests? on: February 01, 2005, 02:10:01 AM
Seems like everytime I buy hardware that comes with a mail-in rebate, I never get it.
I last bought an external Acom Data hard drive (160gb usb) and mailed in the rebate (something like $30) month after month, no sign of it.  Finally after about a half year of waiting I emailed Acom Data. They "lost track" of it and their server crashed so they needed my information again.
They sent it out a week later and I finally got it. Never would have got it if I kept waiting.

Now I bought a jump drive 1GB usb thing (whatever it's called) that was $59.99 originally plus the $20 rebate. Mailed it in about 3 months ago. Shame on me since I sent them the original reciept and didn't make a copy of it first.
To this day I'm still waiting and am probably going to have to look them up on the internet.

Just venting I guess but I know that the next time I buy hardware that looks good on paper ($50 after a $30 mail in rebate for X) I'll think twice before buying it.

Anyone else have similiar problems, or still waiting on their rebate like I am?
3422  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / AVG 7.0 Free Edition on: February 01, 2005, 02:05:05 AM
If anyone's interested, check Microsoft's Antispyware page for the links to trial anti-virus programs.
I was using AVG free edition as well until I got EZ Antivirus. Download and 1 year subscription for free. Auto updates are a breeze. Never any problems. It's the kind of antivirus program you install and forget about. (Unless something happens)
Of course after my year subscription in january of 2006, I'll go back to AVG free edition, or maybe Anti-Vir.
At least with EZ Antivirus you're getting a "paid" (even though it's free) antivirus protection which are usually better than the free editions.
3423  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / SWAT 4 Beta on: February 01, 2005, 02:00:41 AM
I hope Irrational Games does a better job with SWAT 4 than they did with Tribes Veangeance. I don't like how they pick up another developer's games and make it their own and then leave out important features. (Like no bots in Tribes Veangeance. Their "it's up to the community to release a bot" comment is what lost my respect for them. Since when is it the paying customer's job aka "the community" to code a bot for them? at least valve had the guts to hire a third party - turtle rock - to make a bot for counter-strike)

I'm not suprised at all that they are concentrating on multiplayer either.
What are the chances that they include "bots" (like Swat 3 Tactical game of the year) in multiplayer? Or AI element leaders?
I was one of the people who suggested AI element leaders on the old official Swat 3 forums.
The developers listened. Now you can play SWAT 3 TGOY with any combination of human/AI players and you don't HAVE to be element leader. A good AI is one that can think on it's own and not have to rely on a human player to issue it orders and tell it what to do, where to go, if he should deploy gas before going in, etc. that is just too much of a headache for me.

I guess I shoudn't assume too much about Swat 4, but from what I've read so far, their AI seems to concentrate on the human player babysitting his team of little girls because without the human player in charge, there is no AI.
3424  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Funny msg from ebayer on: January 31, 2005, 11:57:50 PM
I guess he forgot about the "legally binding contract" part of the transaction.
Just for fun why not email him back and let him know that when he bidded on the item he is legally required to make payment (use ebay's own quote to help back it up) and then mention you have discussed the matter with your private lawyer who is willing to take this case to court to uphold the contract between you and the buyer.

Good thing Ebay has that mutual cancellation thing where they refund us and you can let the "fanatical" buyer go without giving him a strike. I have to admit even though it's rare, sometimes you do run into an unexpected problem and can't make the payment.
So yeah.. like Leo says at least he's trying.. now send off that letter threatining legal action against him!  unibrow

Battlefield Earth, in all seriousness, was a VERY good movie. I didn't know it was a book until after I had seen the movie. Being the science fiction fan I am, I really don't see why it had so much negativity around it.

Robinhood Prince of Thieves (I can't believe that movie is over 10 years old now, how time goes by..) I thought he was a decent actor. Broken Arrow with John Travolta.
3000 Miles to Graceland.
A movie with Courtney Love can't remember the name, they played a couple who kidnapped children for ransom.
Not that bad of an actor IMO.

The movie has gotten a lot of negative remarks but I've learned not to trust the critics after how many bad reviews Battlefield Earth got, and against the reviews warnings I went ahead and saw it. What a movie.

Did anyone ever see Elektra here and LIKE it? I'm curious because a similiar thread was started about other people's reviews, but I don't remember anyone here posting their opinion on the movie. Or did everyone buy right into the critics reviews like we all bought into Bush's "Iraq has weapons of mass destruction and must be attacked" which turned out to be wrong?
Surely if the president can be wrong, so can the critics!

3432  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Biggest eBay Pet Peeve!!! on: January 29, 2005, 03:57:13 PM
It happened to me just recently. I sold delta force land warrior (new) for about $3 on Ebay. I sent it and then went to North Carolina to visit my brother at Camp Laguene.
Two weeks later I got back and had about 46 emails from the buyer saying "Where is it?" (I left him feedback the same day he made payment.) So I emailed him, tried to calm him and let him know it was sent, I was away and to give it another week (only 3 weeks) and if still nothing, email me again and I'd either refund him or send another copy of the game. (EB sells them for 25 cents each here!) So no big deal, $3 plus $2 shipping, a $5 item..
The buyer, obviously a young kid, didn't want to hear it though. He made up all kinds of stories why he didn't get it, mainly because I wanted to "keep the game for myself".
For the first time in Ebay history, a buyer pissed me off and it was over FIVE DOLLARS!
Not only did he threaten negative feedback, but he also said he would make it a personal crusade to make sure that whenever I sell items on Ebay he would email all the bidders telling them I ripped people off.
The funny part? I had close to 200 different feedbacks from different users and only of them were positives. 100%. This kid was going to screw up my 100%. I told him once again, if you don't get it in a week I'll refund you or send you a new game, it's your choice. He said "keep your stupid game it's revenge now".
Why the hell would I want to keep a 25 cent game?

Anyway to make a long story short (too late right lol) I said nobody would believe his immaturity I have 100% feedback, so what is 1 negative out of 200 positives? It was bound to happen sooner or later, but I would make sure that I'd get him a negative one way or another and I "knew people" so I would get back at him.
Never heard from him again and he never left the negative.

From that one experience though, I learned, don't leave the buyer positive feedback until you know he got it and is ready to do the same for you. There are far too many children and immature people on Ebay to leave positive feedback so blindly.

3434  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Since installing SP2 my connection is about 50% slower.. on: January 25, 2005, 02:41:29 PM
I've held off installing windows service pack 2 all this time because I never heard anything good about it, only problems. Some games don't even support it. (Alexander to name one. They conviently place the warning INSIDE the box that SP2 isn't support.)
Since my gateway (anyone considering a gateway, I made the mistake of my life buying a $2500 notebook, really wish I had gone dell but the 17" widescreen got the best of me) has been having problems, crashes, lockups, slowdowns, I've re-installed windows xp several times and finally I figured what the hell maybe SP2 will do some good.
Downloaded and installed last night, and now my internet connection is like being on dial-up all over again. The webpages are taking 4 times as long to load. My downloads are about half the speed as they were before, and sometimes pages just sit there loading and then an error comes up. Refresh, slow, slow, slow... loading.. loading.. (even Consolegold) and finally, there it is.

Anyone else experience anything like this since installing SP2? I knew there was a reason why I went this long without updating. If it's SP2 that's screwing my connection I might have to go back to original XP or SP1.
Any suggestions?

How would you like if someone came to your house - an ex girlfriend perhaps - and deleted some files on your computer that she knew you would have a hard time without? (Such as your porno?)

That sounds like Israel. How many UN resolutions have they violated? How many times has the counsel come up to condemn Israel's actions, only to be vetoed by one country - the United States?
They have WMD, they've invaded their neighbors, and they attacked us in 1967 killing 34 of our sailors. http://www.ussliberty.com

There were far more dangerous countries out there than Iraq ever was. As you surely know, the search for WMD is officially over. Why did we go to war? The report says Iraq gave up their weapons after the first gulf war. Hans Blix (pre-war Iraq) has said the same thing and has spoken out against the war in Iraq.
So has the ex-marine ex head weapons inspector for the first gulf war, Scott something.. (If you need his name I'll look it up)
Bush is just a warmongering blood thirsty president. What's worse is that he is the image of America. No wonder so much of the world hates us when we have a president who forces his views on other countries. He's already made it clear he's going to invade new countries in his next 4 years. I wonder who will be next. Iran? North Korea? Maybe even Cuba?

But hey, it's our job to police the rest of the world. That's just.. our job! So if X country which isn't a democracy doesn't like our government, they should be able to come over here and force their government on us too. Then when we revolt (much like the american revolution) against the occupation they start calling us "terrorists" and telling us they are only occupying us to liberate us. Imagine that.
