1  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PC] Civilization: Beyond Earth - Finally an Alpha Centauri successor? on: April 13, 2014, 11:38:57 PM
I actually just started playing Alpha Centauri again. Forgot how much fun it was, even for a 15 year old game.

I had a full size random map with all factions on the hardest difficulty, ended up allying myself with Sister Miriam of the Believers and together we took out the Hive and the Peacekeepers, both of us having probably the largest military of all factions. We were combining our forces against Colonel Santiago, which of course meant Sister Miriam was using my bases for her troops to launch attacks.. and out of nowhere, Sister Miriam launched a surprise attack on me while all her troops were inside my bases.
I managed to beat the Spartan Federation back that she surrendered to me and ended up helping fight back the Believers. We slowly worked Miriam's forces back to her own bases and began launching attacks on her home turf.
Then Morgan decides he wants to attack me from the South, while I'm still trying to work on Miriam to the West. Luckily Colonel Santiago was building a considerable military force and was able to help - and just as we began working our way into Miriam's territory.. the game locked up.
Tried restarting from where I left off, and it locked up again.

Over 2 hours just to have it lockup! Maybe a Windows 8.1 issue, not sure.. but if Civilization Beyond Earth is anything like Alpha Centauri was, I plan on it being a day 1 purchase.

3  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / [PS4/PC] H1Z1 post-apocalyptic MMO on: April 11, 2014, 03:30:51 AM
Quote
Sony Online Entertainment's post-apocalyptic massively multiplayer online game, H1Z1, is heading to PC first and PlayStation 4 later, SOE president John Smedley said on the latest Game Talk Live episode, and will be available in 4-6 weeks via Steam Early Access for $20.

H1Z1, where players to take on the role of an apocalypse survivor in a world swarming with zombies, was first revealed earlier today when details of the podcast were teased. The game will be a free-to-play title with microtransactions but it won't be pay-to-win and nor will it require a subscription.

"The H1Z1 virus devastated mankind and left nothing but death and destruction in its wake and a world nearly empty of human life where the remnants of humanity are in a fight against extinction against those infected with the virus," Smedley revealed. "It's been 15 years since H1Z1 was first encountered and what's left of the world before it is overrun with the Infected. Humanity has been reduced to hiding in the shadows, searching desperately for food and water and anything that can help to survive even for another day. But the Infected aren't the only dangers in the world. Everyday life in the Apocalypse means dealing with all kinds of wild animals and the brutality of other survivors, as well as finding your next meal and a safe place to sleep."

Another developer claiming the PS4 is more powerful.

Quote
It is "physically impossible" for the Xbox One's graphical performance to catch up to what the PS4 is capable of, Just Add Water CEO Stewart Gilray has stated in an effort to dismiss inaccurate reports attributed to Oddworld creator Lorne Lanning.

A report on Xbox Achievements was titled, "Performance Gap Between Xbox One And PS4 Will Disappear, Says Oddworld Creator," but this is said to be inaccurate.

"Actually that is NOT what he said," Gilray told Worlds Factory. "I spoke to Lorne afterwards and what he meant when speaking to that guy was that budgets, schedules and perceivable differences would narrow, NOT that the Xbox One performance is improving to align with PS4, that is just physically impossible. The PS4 has MORE COMPUTE units, and faster memory and a whole bunch of things, that would make that physically impossible to happen."

Sony thinking about adding backwards compatibility after all?

Quote
Dying to play classic games like Viewtiful Joe or Tekken 3 on your PS4? Well, you might just be in luck. A recent rumor has indicated that Sony is working on PS1 and PS2 backwards compatibility for the PS4 — sidestepping the need for game streaming completely. Even better, a number of “select titles” are supposedly running natively at 1080p.

Ahsan Rasheed, a noted insider in the gaming industry, made a number of tweets today claiming that Sony plans to support PS1 and PS2 titles on its latest console. While it’s no surprise that Sony is working on bringing its back catalog to the PS4, it was largely assumed that the PlayStation Now game streaming service would fill that role. Instead, we might have access to the entirety of the PS1 and PS2 library running on the PS4′s hardware itself. It’s easy to imagine Sony selling emulated classic titles on PSN, but this could also mean that PS1 and PS2 game discs could be played seamlessly.

More importantly, Rasheed claims that some titles will even be capable of rendering natively at 1080p. While the details like textures and shaders would likely be left untouched, the game itself could be made to run at resolutions never possible with the original hardware. For example, the Dolphin emulator can take the classic 480p GameCube version of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, and make it render beautifully at 1080p. If Sony is working that same kind of engineering magic on its emulator for the PS4, we can expect classic games to look better than they’ve ever looked before.

Yes Starz renewed Black Sails for a second season.

I was over all impressed by Season 1, it obviously had a decent budget, along with politics and battles to keep you interested. While it will never replace Spartacus, it's probably the next best show from Starz.

13  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: AT&T Wireless New Mobile Share Plan - Really? on: March 27, 2014, 09:18:19 PM
I'm tempted to switch my individual line to the 2GB plan, but being 6 months away from my full discount upgrade, not sure if I want to jump in yet.

My individual line is $79.99 a month ($39.99 450 mins, $30 3GB, $10 unlimited text) comes to about $87 per month after taxes. (Discount applied)

The mobile share for 2GB would be $65 per month, and it says my discount would still apply.

I only use about 100 minutes a month, but a lot of data. So I'd be losing 1GB of data, and gaining unlimited minutes, something I'll never need. Feels like paying for something I don't use. With AT&T admitting the cost to transmit 1MB of data over LTE going down by 93%, it sure hasn't reflected on their data prices.

That T-Mobile $30 plan also sounds tempting, but T-Mobile coverage was poor last time I used them, to the point of being in areas with zero service ,not even roaming.

On Best Buy under the deals section there's a "Clearance and Open Box" category, put in your zip code and look up the TV's. Sometimes you'll find a good deal on an open box TV.

I just picked up a refurbished 29" Phillips Smart TV for $175 shipped through Ebay. (Listing is still up if you search for ezkliquidators) Came in yesterday so haven't had a lot of time to play with it, but so far so good. First time wit a smart TV. It's replacing a 32" Emerson that was stolen when my apartment was robbed.

Signed into law.

Quote
A Ugandan newspaper listed 200 people it accused of being gay, a day after the president called homosexuals 'mercenaries' and signing one of the world's toughest anti-gay laws.

"Exposed!" the headline of the Red Pepper tabloid read, beneath photographs of Ugandans it said were gay, as well as reporting on lurid stories of alleged homosexual actions.

"Uganda's 200 top homos named," the daily newspaper added, which listed both those who have openly declared their sexuality as well as those who had not, including gay rights activists, priests and music stars.

"In salutation to the new law, today we unleash Uganda's top homos and their sympathisers," the newspaper added.

In 2011, prominent Ugandan gay rights campaigner David Kato was bludgeoned to death at his home after a different newspaper splashed photos, names and addresses of gays in Uganda on its front page along with a yellow banner reading "Hang Them".

On Monday, President Yoweri Museveni signed a bill into law which holds that repeat homosexuals should be jailed for life, outlaws the promotion of homosexuality and requires people to denounce gays.

Museveni said he could not understand how one could "fail to be attracted to all these beautiful women and be attracted to a man" instead and described in graphic details his particular revulsion to oral sex.

"There is something really wrong with you," Museveni, a devout evangelical Christian who has been in power nearly three decades, said of gay men.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni will sign into law Monday a controversial bill that will see homosexuals jailed for life, despite international pressure, a government spokesman said.

The Ugandan anti-gay bill cruised through parliament in December after its architects agreed to drop an extremely controversial death penalty clause, although the bill still says that repeat homosexuals should be jailed for life, outlaws the promotion of homosexuality and requires people to denounce gays.

"The president will sign the anti-homosexuality bill today," presidential spokesman Tamale Mirundi told AFP.

Museveni, a key African ally of the United States and the European Union, has already been under fire from key Western donors over alleged rampant corruption, and had been under pressure from diplomats and rights groups to block the legislation.

"The president cannot be pushed by the international lobby groups... he has made it clear whatever he does will be in the interests of Uganda and not foreign interests," Mirundi said.

"Uganda is a sovereign state and the decisions taken must be respected."

"This is the moment the world has been waiting for," he told AFP.

Museveni, a devout evangelical Christian, earlier this month also signed into law anti-pornography and dress code legislation which outlaws "provocative" clothing, bans scantily-clad performers from Ugandan television and closely monitors what individuals watch on the Internet.

Arizona's Legislature has passed a controversial bill that would allow business owners, as long as they assert their religious beliefs, to deny service to gay and lesbian customers.

The bill, which the state House of Representatives passed by a 33-27 vote Thursday, now goes to Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican and onetime small business owner who vetoed similar legislation last year but has expressed the right of business owners to deny service.

"I think anybody that owns a business can choose who they work with or who they don't work with," Brewer told CNN in Washington on Friday. "But I don't know that it needs to be statutory. In my life and in my businesses, if I don't want to do business or if I don't want to deal with a particular company or person or whatever, I'm not interested. That's America. That's freedom."

The 35-year-old whined in a letter to prison authorities that conditions in prison are "torture" and he needs a PS3, a softer chair, an increase in his weekly allowance and video games meant for adults instead of 3-year-olds

"Other inmates have access to adult games while I only have the right to play less interesting kids game," he wrote in November. "One example is 'Rayman Revolution,' a game aimed at 3-year-olds," he said.

He also demanded that his weekly allowance of $49 be doubled.

Subway said today it is removing a chemical used in yoga mats and shoe soles from the bread of it its popular sandwiches after a food blogger got more than 50,000 signatures in a petition drive.

"The complete conversion to have this product out of the bread will be done soon," Subway said in a statement. The company said the move had nothing to do with the protest and that it was "already in the process of removing azodicarbonamide as part of our bread improvement efforts."

But Vani Hari, the activist blogger who takes credit for the removal of yellow dyes in at least three of Kraft's Mac & Cheese products for children, was declaring victory after she had been researching the company's bread ingredients since 2012.

"I commend Subway for finally responding to me and now over 57,000 concerned citizens. Their swift action is a testament to what power petitions and individuals who sign them can have," Hari said. "I'd like to note that current Subway sandwiches still have this ingredient, and urge everyone not to eat their sandwich bread until they have finally removed the chemical."

Hari said she was shocked to find azodiacarbonamide, a plastic-based additive, on Subways' food labeling.

The World Health Organization has linked this chemical additive to respiratory issues, allergies and asthma, and it is banned in Europe and Australia. Azodiacarbonamide is legal in the United States and Canada.

"It helps ... produce the air within the foam of a yoga mat," said Hari. "It does the same thing for bread."

While Amazon's debating whether or not it should hike Prime subscription fees in the US, now its decision may have to take into consideration a potential competitor. This morning, Newegg introduced Premier, a $50 shipping service that aims to cope with the likes of Amazon Prime. For that yearly fee, Newegg promises to get stuff to your doorstep in three days or less, as well as a number of other benefits including no restocking fees, free returns and dedicated customer service. You will, however, miss out on the Instant Video streaming offered through Prime, but this also means you'll end up saving $29 per year -- which is something that could make sense to folks who are already subscribed to Netflix.

I was debating whether to add more PHOT or to sell it and move to something else. Obviously a $250 investment turning into $2000 isn't that bad at all. If I had just let my $250 stock sit there, I'd be selling today for $2k. Not too shabby. As I have a crappy job and don't make a lot of cash, $2000 to someone like me is a good bit of money.

I also had 20,000 shares of HEMP last year. Sold that as it was never going up. Except now of course.

Some of these new pot tickers may be a way to make a quick buck or two. I bought $135 worth of USEI two days ago. Not a lot of money but look where are today. All because of news they are entering the marijuana field.

Might have to start a new thread on penny stocks.

Are you investing in them? I am not that brave. Even if they were stronger than they appear to be now, one law change and they tank.

I bought 5,000 shares of GrowLife ("PHOT") a week ago. It's trading at about 5 cents a share. Really don't see it going any less than 4 cents, so even if it never takes off I'm out a few dollars but not a big enough of an investment where I lose everything.
On the other hand, if GrowLife takes off.. PS4 and Xb1 paid off!  A gamble where not much to lose but a lot to gain, IMO.

This is their website:

http://growlifeinc.com/

And they are opening http://cannabis.org/ October 1st.

I hate looking back at this as I sold my shares in PHOT shortly after that post. Wish I could go back in time and buy 2,000,000 shares @ 5 cents again. Hard to believe it's only been a couple of months and it took off as fast as it did.

Was anyone so lucky to have owned any of these marijuana stocks before all the hype hit?

A federal appeals court on Friday upheld a judge's ruling granting a taxpayer-funded sex change operation for a transgender inmate serving a life sentence for a murder conviction, saying receiving medically necessary treatment is a constitutional right that must be protected "even if that treatment strikes some as odd or unorthodox."

U.S. District Judge Mark Wolf ruled in 2012 that the state Department of Correction must provide sex reassignment surgery for Michelle Kosilek, who was born as Robert Kosilek and is serving a life sentence for the killing of his wife in 1990.

The Department of Correction challenged the ruling at the 1st U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals. Its lawyers argued Kosilek has received adequate treatment for gender identity disorder, including female hormone treatments, laser hair removal and psychotherapy. Prison officials said those treatments have eased the stress and anxiety felt by Kosilek, and they argued it was unnecessary to heed advice from independent medical experts who recommended the 64-year-old undergo the sex change surgery as the next step of treating her intense gender identity disorder.

The Department of Correction also argued prison officials were concerned about protecting Kosilek, who's in an all-male prison, from sexual assaults if she were allowed to complete her transformation into a woman.

35  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Smoking increases chances of child being gay in adulthood, study claims on: January 20, 2014, 11:47:05 PM
Quote
Women who smoke or lead a stressful life during their pregnancy can influence their child’s sexuality and IQ, a neuroscientist has claimed.

A pregnant woman’s lifestyle is believed to have an impact on the development of their babies – with drinking, taking drugs and even living in an area with a lot of pollution affecting children in later life.

Dick Swaab, professor of neurobiology at Amsterdam University, suggests drinking and taking drugs can lower a child’s IQ while taking synthetic hormones and smoking can increase the likelihood of girls being lesbians or bisexual.

Having more older brothers is also thought to increase the chance that boys will be gay, possibly because of the development of the mother’s immune system to have stronger responses to male hormones with each son born.

“Pre-birth exposure to both nicotine and amphetamines increases the chance of lesbian daughters,” Swaab told the Sunday Times.

“Pregnant women suffering from stress are also more likely to have homosexual children of both genders because their raised level of the stress hormone cortisol affects the production of foetal sex hormones.”

If there are approximately 120 people on base, and they kill off, say 4 or 5 every episode, that should give us enough for 2 seasons. Then at the end of season 2 they send a new batch of people to find out what happened to the last batch, rinse repeat and recycle. It can go on forever!
