81  Gaming / Portable Gaming & Apps / 3DS "Must Play" Games (No Mario!) on: December 19, 2016, 02:18:34 PM
I'm expecting to have a 3DS in my hands come Christmas morning with Pokemon Sun... or Moon... I forget which. Whichever one my son didn't want. Anyway, what are the other must play games?

I don't like any Mario games.
I don't like platformers.
I don't like modern Zelda games.
I don't like visual novels.

I already have Fire Emblem Fates stashed away. I also bought Ocarina of Time to give my son, but I may steal from him at some point.

I almost loaded up Dead Rising 2 which I never finished... I may do that yet. I got stuck on a boss fight and just couldn't get past it. When I played DR3, I got stuck on the final boss. I started over keeping my levels and annihilated him after playing through again. I guess I need to do that for 2 as well. Apparently that's not a thing in 4. It's probably for the best.

I finally restarted and finished DR2 yesterday, just six years after release. DR4 arrives tomorrow. I really hope it doesn't also arrive Sunday.  icon_redface

I almost bought it over the weekend when I decided I was done with Big Pharma, but I'm not sure if I am getting it for Christmas or not so I decided to hold off...

re: saves:
Auto saves take place anytime you complete a mission or side activity, so that's a reliable way to get a save. It also frequently saves after shooting a photo, since the game needs to keep track of how many points the photo netted Frank, and you can get an auto save after dying.

EVERYONE who has a PC should try the demo out on Steam if they own a PC, and enjoy games like the old Commandos series. Hell, even if you don't try it out anyway. You may love it, and the demo is free!

Yeah, I'm trying this out and it seems awesome!  I never really played the old Commandos games beyond a demo or two, but this really satisfies my Tenchu ninja stealth assassin itch.

I kind of wish it wasn't $40, but I also feel petty saying that.

I didn't even realize it was going to be on PC day one. Now I have a choice to make... I just finished Watch Dogs 2 so I need a new game.

I have Dead Rising 4 on my list because I figure I had to put a sacrificial lamb on the list. Nobody would believe that I didn't ask for any video games. I am off starting 12/21 so I need something to play before Christmas.

I have been known to buy (console) games and hand them to my wife to give back to me on Christmas.

Now I see the PC release of WD2 isn't for a couple weeks... buy it on xbox or wait? Grrr... so I started up my 5th run through XCOM2 and I'll put Watch Dogs on the Christmas list.

19 hours played on PC with KB/mouse and I am having a lot of fun with it. It is repetitive, but I like the stuff that's repeating so I'm ok with it. The storytelling threw me off a little bit in the beginning because I forgot how they tell stories in Mafia. I really like the way the "narration" stuff is interlaced with the gameplay... especially when you blow a mission.  saywhat

I'm honestly starting to think that Gellar's drivatar may be bugged. I've previously commented on how it tends to zip ahead of everyone else regardless of car, but in this latest championship (Ferrari vs Lamborghini) it has grown ridiculous to the point of frustration. I could drive perfectly and I still wouldn't be able to even see his car, let alone have a chance of passing it. The only way I can tell where it is is by looking at the GPS. I race to second place within the first half of the first lap, and yet Gellar's drivatar is nowhere to be seen, having pulled far, far ahead of the rest of the drivatars in half a lap. It's impossible to beat this no matter how well I drive, which is why I'm wondering if it's simply a bug. My car is upgraded to its limits, but I stand no chance.

It's kind of making this particular championship feel pointless. Why try to excel if there's no way for me to win anyway?

What drivatar difficulty are you playing? I haven't seen anything like that. I've had a runaway leader I just couldn't catch but the fault was squarely with me.

I do have one race setup that I totally annihilate the competition. It's basically a collection of misfit cars and I have a D500 Meyers Manx setup for stupid speed and no handling and it is ridiculous (I thik I went for an engine conversion but left factory tires on it). I'm in second place when I hit the starting line. I have to drift and smash into barriers to turn without coming to a complete stop. It's pretty funny.
96  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Forza Horizon 3 [XB1/PC] on: October 03, 2016, 05:54:43 PM
That's funny because I thought FH2 was kind of a letdown after playing the original. I thought the expansion of options was too much. FH3 is way more repetitive but I am really enjoying it. I think the difference might be more about me than the games. I did complete FH2 twice.

My only issue with FH3 is that THERE IS NO ENDGAME! You can complete the campaign in a few hours and after that it is grinding for achievements, levels, or whatever other sandbox goals you set for yourself. Who is the Horizon Australia Champion?!?

I just downloaded it and it looks like it is reflecting the stats as of release day maybe. It shows me at level 78 and just over 1000 miles driven. I am level 170-something with well over 29 miles at this point, so I am guessing there must be some delay to updates.

That makes me want a Gellar of my own!

I have Tilt, Ron (GamingTrend) and Hark now along with one other guy.

I'm sitting at 98 cars in my garage though I am trying to ditch some of those. I bought a bunch of cars at auction before I noticed I had free DLC cars I hadn't accessed yet, so I ended up with some dupes. Doh.

I think last I looked I was around 1700 miles driven and I'm still having a blast. I've finished the bucket list, the midnight battles and driven on every road. I have 9 more travel boards before I get to fast travel anywhere for free. There are a few XP board I have found but haven't figured out how to access them (rooftop boards). Lots of championships yet to complete.

1) Barn finds, while great in theory, are tedious and horrible. I've basically just skipped straight to googling the location and even then its annoying.

The Drone generally makes these pretty quick. Use the turbo (RB) button and then spiral in and you will find it in no time.

I can't help you with the rest. I would never turn off ABS. I did try braking line only, but like you noticed, it's too hard to tell where the hell you are supposed to go. Sometimes with the angle of the sun or rain on the surface you may not even be able to see the racing line.

I only created one bucket list event and it only takes 46 seconds... so at least it's over fast.

I got a message last night that I took part in 115 races over the past day and earned... 10k credits. That seems low.

I just got informed by the game that my drivatar has been in no less than 2,832 races since yesterday, earning me 36,200 CR. The day before that I earned 7,100 CR from a mere 34 races, so it appears that there's a serious case of diminishing returns here.

How many rosters are you on? I went from 1 to 3 rosters yesterday and got around 20k from 115 races I think.

I finally got rid of my last level 1 roster member yesterday, but I have no GT/OO folks.

I also finally started doing street races. I was skipping them before because they don't give you fans. I got my first midnight battle and it was an M3... racing my Laferrari... that seems unfair. Either way, it's now *my* M3.

Your drivatar kicked my ass in the longest race I have encountered driving a Lamborghini Centenario. I am pretty sure if you just started playing you don't actually have that car, but I'm going to want revenge. The race was a map of the entire continent. It took about 10 minutes driving between 200 and 255 mph in my newly acquired S2 998 Ferrari Laferrari. That was freaking nail-baiting.

I hit level 99 last night. I've maxed out all of the festivals (25 million fans to max it out and you stop getting fans at that point). I still have one driver on my lineup that is a level 1, but another that is level 72. I got a message last night that I took part in 115 races over the past day and earned... 10k credits. That seems low.

I'm still playing because... well, it's still fun.

The controls are confusing as hell. For some sub menus you use a set of buttons, for other sub menus you your the arrow wheel thingy. Other than getting used to the funky controls, the game seems awesome. Will play more during the week assuming I get a project completed by Friday.

Yeah, you only get the options the game gives you, unfortunately. I haven't waited to see what happens if you don't pursue the option you are given, if it will never give you another. It has also given me the same person multiple times, which is frustrating when I know Hark is out there just dying to join my roster.

It shows high preference for people on your friends list. I am tempted to remove all the non-forza players from my friends list... but that seems extreme. I guess I should at least give them until this weekend to start playing.  icon_twisted

I've played a tremendous number of hours and I am still having a blast with it.  I am one race away from knocking out the second to last festival upgrade. I am only at about 38% completion. I think I am in the upper 70s for level now. 60 cars. 410/488 roads, 220/425 cars photographed, 85/150 billboards smashed, 15/15 barn cars, something like 12/63 championships. I got the achievement for getting at least 1 star on 50 PR stunts yesterday. I have run into two bucket list challenges that I have given up on for the moment at least. There are two xp boards I haven't figure out how to hit... or have figured out and just haven't executed it right. The point being I have played a LOT and I still have a lot more to do!

One important update: After the first few hours I have played this 100% on the PC. My (launch edition) xbone is connected to a 1080p projector which is projected on a 100-something inch screen. My PC is pretty up to date with a 1080p 28" monitor. It looks SOOOO much better on the PC with faster load times and smoother gameplay. I am really glad I went with the digital version so I could really see the difference. The only thing I am missing by playing it on my PC is the theater sound system. I have cheap-o stereo speakers on my PC vs a kick-ass 7.1 system in my media room.

Also, in case anyone wasn't sure, it uses the same save game across PC and xbox.

One more note because I don't want to reply to myself again...

>>> If anyone is playing and doesn't have me on your friends list, please add me.  <<<

I just added TiLT42 and MonkeyPhinger this morning. I already have Engine Nine, Harkonis, Countach and BullwinkleJ... anyone else?

The credits rolled for me this morning. I may have been playing a bit too much. ninja The stats say I have about 12 hours in, but that seems kind of low. I played a lot Friday and Saturday.

I don't think there is an actual final championship, which is a bit of a disappointment.

I've done the recruit to your lineup thing about 15 times now and I still only have 2 drivers that are playing the game and neither of them are from my friends list. They've given me over a million fans according the stats so I can't complain TOO much. Only 1 person has me in their lineup. You'd think I'd be a hotter prospect at level 65 with ~16 million fans.  icon_twisted Maybe they won't let you have anyone higher level than you.

I have 55 cars in my garage covering pretty much all the classes and categories. I am not sure what my next goal is. I guess I continue working on Festival expansion. I might just slow down at this point.

As someone who never heard of these characters, it wasn't a superhero movie at all. It was a sci-fi movie that just happened to have a couple comic book cameos.

I am curious to what your credit score is then, if you want to say of course. I am kind of similar, I have 3 credit cards that pay for everything. Every bill and expense I have is paid through those credit cards (for points, figure it's time to make money back from the banks). I pay them off in full every month and repeat the process. Until fairly recently I paid for a credit watch service through my bank, I think it was with TransUnion. My score has stayed at, or slightly above, 780 for three years, even when I had a car payment with 3 years left on it. I can make a large purchase, move, lose my job, pay off my car, etc, and it stays around 780. The credit watch service's only comments on how to improve my credit was to buy a house.

If it matters to you, couldn't you just pay the card at different date? Or get some credit cards with good a good cash back system to lower your utilization and get you some money back from them. I just applied for that Capital One card that is 1.5% on all purchases which seems to be the best out of there for cash back without categories (of course it looks like they are going to deny me because lack of income).

I think it was 726 (TU). As far as paying the credit card bill earlier, I'd rather squeeze the pitiful bit of extra interest out of having my money until the due date. I already have the Quicksilver Rewards card so I am good on rewards. I used to be one of those 800 guys but I got rid of some old cards and apparently that was a triple whammy: lowering my total credit, increasing my utilization and lowering the age my oldest open line.

If I lost my job today, I'd be good for years without income or unemployment. It seems like net worth ought to be a factor in some way.

I checked my FICO score through my Discover Card (one of the best perks ever), and have moved into the "very dependable" bracket with my score of 747.

...and this is why credit ratings are crap. smile

The major negative on my credit rating (Capital One uses TransUnion and breaks it down into letter grades in categories) is credit utilization.  I only have one open credit card and utilization is fairly high on that card, but I pay it off in full every month. Because of the way the due date lags, the balance overlaps and it looks like I carry a high balance, but I don't and haven't paid credit card interest in 13 years. I have >50% equity in my house and my car is worth more than the loan. My credit rating is dragged down because I don't have lots of credit cards I don't use.

They also have a simulator that tells what would happen to your credit if you make specific changes. According their simulator I could get a 30 point bump in credit rating by getting another credit card with a $20k limit.

Then again it's not very relevant to me as I don't actually need credit for anything. The only impact I can imagine is insurance costs.

Or you could try Forgotten City, the sequel to Forbidden Island. While I don't have Forbidden Island, the reviews seem to point out that Forgotten City basically improves on most aspects of Forbidden Island.

I haven't heard of Forgotten City. Are you sure you don't mean Forbidden Desert?

I haven't played Galaxy Defenders, but that looks like a lot of fun, as well as the upcoming Alien Uprising, though I'm not sure of the length of these too.

Galaxy Defenders is a good tactical combat game. It's a lot like playing an XCOM board game and it has RPG elements. There is a (very mildly branching) campaign that your characters level up through. It's a not a fast playing game. Game length depends on the scenario, but 90-180 minutes covers most of them.

And of course there's the 3 Dungeons & Dragons adventure games (Castle Ravenloft, Wrath of Ashardalon and Legend of Drizzt) that nail the feel of playing the RPG quite well.

Galaxy Defenders replaces the D&D games for me. The main issue with the D&D games is that you can level up once and the change is trivial. Also, the move or die mechanic that keeps the game going can get tiresome. I did have fun with it with my older son (Cool.
