Yah they do that all the time and it bugs the hell out of me Tongue

So while we are almost on the topic, am I the only person who watches shows like CSI and the random forensic documentaries and makes little mental lists of do's and don'ts... "just in case"? biggrin

Yes, you are the only one.

Coop: you need to buy a Gamecube so you can add some really awesome titles that are exclusive to it to your list of titles you haven't played

My wife has only allocated a small space in the entertainment center for consoles and with the xbox in there I have precious little room for another console, even one as small as the cube. Also, there are no "must have" GC games for me. The only Nintendo exclusive I really miss is bomberman and that's not enough reason to get a GC. There are a number of games I would have to buy if I had a compelling reason to buy a GC, but there just isn't that ONE game, like GTA:SA for the PS2 or the pile of great racing games for the XBox.

Um.. I don't understand how you people do this. When I get a game it's opened and in it's particular game system within hours of me reaching my house.

95% of the games I buy, I buy used, and generally during a Gamestop buy 2 get 1 free sales. The new games I buy are either games I must have and play now or during the Toys'R'Us buy 2 get 1 free sales.

Generally, when I game hits $25 or less used and there is a b2g1 sale if I've given it a thought before I'll pick it up. 3 games for $30-$50 (8% sales tax about offsets the 10% gamestop discount card) is irresistable to me... now if I could just get time to play them.

I also have about a dozen PC games I've yet to play... it's the damn gogamer shipping deal. If I'm going to buy 1 PC game, I find 2 more I want and they get added to the backlog. .. right behind all the console games hehe.

Silent Storm would be my other suggestion, though that depends on how "not the best" that laptop is. Silent Storm is a bit old now, but may still be a system hog for you.

There's obviously no way for the remote to know about this.  However, if things are ever out of sync, you hit the "Help" button, which will ask yes/no questions to re-establish the correct state.  Also works if the IR gets blocked or the device doesn't respond for some other reason.

Or you throw a shoe at the receiver and hope you hit the right button.

4027  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Chessmaster question on: December 28, 2004, 05:28:49 PM
Chessmaster 10th edition has a section dealing with the openings. It's not really a tutorial as much as it's a reference. Something you can explore with some explanation about why you would do each thing.

It kind of works like a folder tree in explore, you click a white move and it opens up the responding black moves and gives a short note about the move (including name). You click on any of the black moves and it opens the responding white moves and gives a short note, etc... it goes several moves deep.

The Waitzkin Academy part of the tutorial helped me a lot with general tactics that I really didn't have a grasp on. There is antoher tutorial on the subject of attacking chess, but I haven't gotten in to that one yet.

The huge variety of cumputer opponents is really excellent as well... and up to the 1000 level they really move very fast too. smile I don't know about the higher level ones as I'm not up to that challenge. slywink

One thing that some of the earlier Universals had a problem with was losing all your Macros when the batteries died.  Make sure you get one with a backup system (backup battery, other), or you will likely return it, like my roomate had to with his favorite Universal.  Otherwise you'll have to go through the hassle of reprogramming the remote frequently, as those universals can eat batteries.

Two things, memory is retained when the batteries are removed and even if you do lose all of the programming, you just need to connect the remote to your PC, log in to the harmony site and reload the programming (even if you throw your remote against the wall and have to buy a new one).

That's specifically why I selected this one. It can control up to 15 individual devices. As new components are released support for them is added to the configuration web site. It has enough buttons for most everything, plus up to 6 custom label buttons on the LCD screen for each activity.

In fact, this remote can switch my TV to other inputs instantly, something the remote that came with the TV couldn't do (watching a DVD meant switching the video input 5 times, no more)!

It takes some setup time, collecting model numbers on your components, configuring extra buttons that aren't automatically configured, but in the end it's completely worth it to me.
