4001  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Greatest Universal Remote Ever! on: December 28, 2004, 03:25:17 PM
Yah I checked out the guide functionality, but I would be too lazy to keep updating the guide regularly so I promptly forgot about it...

Very cool ability tho, so if I'm watching a movie and wondering if I forgot to set the DVR for something I can check the remote quick rather than stopping the movie and switching to cable.

Very cool, Tivo may well be the greatest company ever. biggrin If the Tivo remote can handle it, I bet the Harmony remote could, and everything else for that matter.... not that you want to spend another $150 hehe.

I remember Gamestop having deals where you buy preowned games like buy 2, get the 3rd free. Does anyone know if one of those are coming up soon?

My local gamestop is having that exact sale at this very moment. I don't know if it is a store by store thing or national though. I picked up 9 used games yesterday...  don't tell the wife!

I'm not sure how any remote could deal with 2 tivos... at least in the same room. It seems like they would both respond to any inputs?

What model Denon is that coopasonic?  I've been looking for a receiver with multiple component inputs, but the most I've seen (at a reasonable price) is two.

Denon AVR-2105 $650

3 to 1 component video switching, 4 to 1 optical digital.

7.1 channel, 90watts per...

The next option woulf be a receiver with component switching. My current dream receiver is a Denon with 3 component inputs. It's about the same price as the switch above, but with other benefits.
4007  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / TV - good solution for not enough inputs on: December 28, 2004, 01:18:57 AM

Only $537... Tongue Should be a  simple thing to do, but I can't seem to find one cheaper wth component inputs and IR.

One thing that some of the earlier Universals had a problem with was losing all your Macros when the batteries died.  Make sure you get one with a backup system (backup battery, other), or you will likely return it, like my roomate had to with his favorite Universal.  Otherwise you'll have to go through the hassle of reprogramming the remote frequently, as those universals can eat batteries.

Two things, memory is retained when the batteries are removed and even if you do lose all of the programming, you just need to connect the remote to your PC, log in to the harmony site and reload the programming (even if you throw your remote against the wall and have to buy a new one).

If this gave me full functionality of all my stuff with one remote I would consider it.

That's specifically why I selected this one. It can control up to 15 individual devices. As new components are released support for them is added to the configuration web site. It has enough buttons for most everything, plus up to 6 custom label buttons on the LCD screen for each activity.

In fact, this remote can switch my TV to other inputs instantly, something the remote that came with the TV couldn't do (watching a DVD meant switching the video input 5 times, no more)!

It takes some setup time, collecting model numbers on your components, configuring extra buttons that aren't automatically configured, but in the end it's completely worth it to me.
4011  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Correspondence Chess (for the slow thinker) on: December 27, 2004, 03:20:49 PM
(I don't think this really belongs in the game forums, but feel free to move it if you do)

Help me get through the dullest week at work ever...

Browser based chess, play multiple games at once (max of 6 unless registered), you take a turn and it sends your opponent an email... when he takes his turn, you get an email. Nice way to play if you don't like the pressure of a timed game at yahoo.

Free registration required to play. If you are afraid of spam give me your email and I will send you an invite for a google mail account you can use just to be safe.

If anyone is interested, register and send a challenge to "coopasonic"!

Web based setup of your remote, no silly "learning" crap where you popint the remotes at each other and press a complicated sequence of buttons.

Harmony Remotes Link

Basically, you connect the remote to your PC USB port with the supplied cable, install the update software, go online and enter in your A/V equipment Manufacturer and Model Number and it walks you through preferences for activities. Hit update and it downloads the configuration to your remote and poof, it works!

Here is a picture of the screen to customize the buttons.

I'll never have to show my wife how to do anything with the A/V equipment against, it's all automagical! The one I have is listed at $229 or so on the manufacturer site, but it can be had for ~$130ish from tigerdirect or similar online electronics site.

Best remote ever. (well perhaps some of those mega-pricy ones are better... but I hardly believe it!)

Basically, the new-model PS2 is about as small as it's going to get at this point for a DVD-based system.  Add in the necessary screen and controls too, and you have an absolutely gargantuan "handheld" system.

Check out the portable PS2... yah a bit too big biggrin you'll notice the DVD drive is next to nothing tho

4035  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Which games will you pack away with your system? on: December 07, 2004, 09:43:27 PM
Hmmm... once the system has been replaced, I'm pretty sure it and all the games that go along with it will go to ebay or some friend with young kids that wouldn't know they are out of date games.

Of course, I generally wait at least a year after a hot new system comes out before I buy it (I bought my xbox summer 2003, my ps2 last month). I want there to be tons of discounted and used games available before I switch and then I will buy games like crazy in the following months.
4036  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PC-PR] Ubisoft LAUNCHES Chessmaster┬« 10th edition on: December 07, 2004, 07:17:55 PM
Ok, so I am a bit behind. I got bored of the other games on my cell phone and started playing the java chess game on it. I realized how much I enjoyed (and how bad I am) at chess. The cell phone version takes forever to make a move so I decided to pick this up for play at home and hopefully to improve my game.

I played around with it a bit last night, playing a tournament against the lowest level AI opponents. There are definitely some very different playstyles among the AI opponents I saw and the worst of them was pretty challenging at my novice skill level. The graphics are absolutely beautiful with a couple dozen different sets of pieces to choose from. The basic AIs at least decide on their moves pretty much instantly, which is nice.

After getting my butt handed to my by the lowest rated AI opponents, I decided to go through some of the "learning" parts of the program. The basics are all covered, movements and such, but I already knew all that. There were some scenarios that were pretty cool, like they given you a board at a certain point in the game and challenge you to get checkmate in 2 moves and it seemed to have a lot of those scenarios, not sure if they were truly random or from a large set of options.

I've never really picked up on the strategy behind chess and I'm hopeful this game will help me out in that regard. I'm a relatively smart fellow and do pretty well at tactical and strategic combat games, so I should be capable, I just haven't ever given it a lot of time to sink in or had any real help with it.

Excellent presentation, appears to be very challenging, thumbs up.

My experience with Bard's Tale:

-  1 hour:  "Damn, this game is hilarious!  Spot-on voice acting, some funny as hell moments, and a cool combat and summon system.  Exactly like Baldur's Gate:  DA, but with a sense of humor.  This is perfect!"

-  3 hours:  "Y'know, the combat is kind of annoying.  If I'm ever under the scenery I can't see what I'm doing.  But hey, I got a couple new summons and I just laughed my ass off at the 3 goblins having an oompa-loompa moment."

I think I was at about the same point when I put the game away, dunno if I will get back to it. Bleh. I found the humor up to that point to be pretty lame... I kept waiting for the laughs but they never came.
4040  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / How often do you reinstall Windows? on: November 30, 2004, 04:38:28 PM

I don't install crap on my PC tho, other than Trillian, games and a couple of productivity type apps. I generally skip demos and freeware/shareware of any kind and I don't surf sites of a questionable nature and I think that goes a long ways to preserving the sanctity of my Windows install.

The only times I have ever done windows installs was on new PCs or Windows upgrades.
