Seeing that makes me wish I had kept the little plastic inserts that come with the ship.  Pretty soon here I am probably going to pull the trigger on that custom foam thing.

I considered it, but they increase the storage space a bit too much for me. My ships move around a bit in their plano boxes, but I am ok with that. On the flip side I have to use 3 plano boxes to hold pretty much the same amount of stuff (I have 1 of each SKU and a second base set)... though mine come in a handy dandy carrying case. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000E3FKTO
43  Non-Gaming / Political / Religious Nonsense / Re: Is our children learning? on: September 24, 2013, 09:41:50 PM

Quote from: Razgon on September 13, 2013, 06:59:51 AM

In Denmark we have Religion as part of normal school. Its taught for 4 years and covers all major religions, their belief systems, and their history. Since religion is a major part of eveyday life, even for people without faith in any of them, its important to understand in order to understand basic human motivations and society at large as well.

In high school in the late 80s in rural New York (yes, there is such a thing), I took an elective class called Mythology. I would love to see what would happen if such a class were taught in Texas today (I have lived in Texas for 15 years, both my kids were born in Texas and will graduate from Texas schools someday). It covered the sorts of mythologies you would expect like Greek, Roman and Norse, but it also covered a few other mythologies, like Christianity and Judaism. You can probably imagine my bible thumping aunt's reaction when I told her about my teenage revelation on the similarities between Christianity and Greek Mythology. I wonder if they still teach that class and if they still include active religions.

I went to church on and off until I was 12 or 13, sometimes with my mom, sometimes with grandma, sometimes all by myself. Eventually I stopped going but couldn't explain why. That class talked about why religion is so important and the innate need to believe in something greater and I finally had an explanation of the behavior of others I could understand and didn't need to explore religion any more.

That is the kind of religious education I would like to see... that will probably never happen here.

I am about 60% through. The first few chapters were interesting, but you totally captured me with Peaches. Awesome. Seriously.

My only complaint is I have seen about half a dozen funny word replacements, where it's obvious you wanted one word but another appears. I'm trying to remember an example now but they are all escaping me. One is perspective vs prospective. It happens on forums, IMs, SMS, etc but I really don't want to see it in a book.

I find the world interesting enough and I'm really interested to see how it turns out. I am generally more of a traditional fantasy fan, but I really like the fantasy in a modern setting. I haven't really read much like this before.

Thanks.  Just did a little more reading up on it, and came across this:

Quote
"Before you can attach materia you must complete the "Waking the Spirit" quest given by F'hobhas at The Bonfire in Central Thanalan at 23,13. This requires you to be level 19 or above in Armorer, Blacksmith, Carpenter, Goldsmith, Leatherworker or Weaver."

Level 19 in a crafting profession?  Yeah, not sure that's gonna happen.

If you are going to do it, I would go with weaver. Tons of recipes for the first time recipe bonus and weaver makes crafting gear so it helps itself.  I have 18 woodworker and ~13 leatherworker, just starting weaver (10 or 11 now) because it was at the last city I hit. lots and lots of moko grass... I mean stupid amounts, but it is going pretty quickly. Goldsmith is also pretty nice for the gear you don't seem to get through quests early.

For you folks new to GT who liked hanging out here the last few weeks, if you need an extra incentive to stick around more I highly recommend you at least pop in on Mondays for a start to visit the weekly What are you buying this week? thread, in which Destructor posts all the upcoming releases for the week (PC and console alike) and people talk about what they are or aren't excited about buying this week.  It's as addictive as the Steam Sale thread, and I've found a lot of great games from seeing others excited in those threads that had previously been entirely off my radar.

OO is now full of fuddy duddies that won't spend more than $6 for a game.

Yes, absolutely.

On the stability front, I was able to log in 3 times yesterday with no waiting or errors. I also decided to just stick with the server I am on and if eventually there is an opportunity to move somewhere that has people with names I would recognize, I will do that. I know people on about 7 different servers now, but GT has the most concentrated mass (did I just call you fat?).

Jebus.  Made the horrible mistake of doing both the home inspection and the consultation about the mortgage details of the same day.  As much as I'd love to be part of the launch excitement of either console, thoughts of closing costs, home repairs/upgrades, appliances, and surviving Christmas (winter is coming...), I'm thinking I can still milk this generation of consoles a wee bit longer.  Maybe this next year is a good time to look at all the high profile titles I missed during their initial run.

I haven't seen any mention of the word grind outside of comments that trying to login feels like a grind. The only grind in this game that I have seen or heard of so far is gathering skills (fishing, botanist, mining - I've done 2 of the 3) and that is pretty much their nature.

I am really trying to keep myself from buying this. 2 months later I will have a brand new console that it won't play on. I will only be able to play it when the kids are asleep. Eventually it will come to PC. Yes, I'm so lazy that going up the media room and waiting for the projector to warmup to play is a negative.

Don't forget that we're ending a summer dry spell with regular TV. You will soon be able to watch new episodes of your favorites in lieu of the typical summer tidal wave of bad reality TV. This may not affect your entertainment choices, but if your wife watches TV in your media room..

Good thought, but she doesn't really use the media room for TV. I went ahead and pre-ordered. I have to have it. It's not like there was really a choice.

so,main story yes...but class story, you have to have the right class equipped and be at the right level,no being a lvl 20 healer trying to do a lvl 20 Gladiator mission

The forced grouping is only the main story though right? They can't make us find tanks and healers to do DPS class missions... can they?

One of the reasons I never played XI was because of the grouping. EQ was the last time I grouped regularly and I didn't like it then (I was a warrior, not many options there) which is why I never got to max level, I did kill a few dragons though (no, not solo). That was about my last raids also. I tried a few in WoW, but I didn't have the time or interest to keep up with the gearing.

Just as a counterpoint, I bought it Friday evening and have had a blast with it. Yes I have been on a different server from everyone I know and getting in can be a pain, but the game is worth it in my opinion. Once they get the login issues squared away, it will be even better. My only complaint with the game is that grouping is an absolute requirement at certain checkpoints in the main story. Consider this punishment for the joy that is playing DPS.

Serious question, if I multi-class as a healer, can I go through the dungeons as a healer and the progression through the main story will apply to the character in general? it makes sense to me, but before I give it any more thought I wanted to be sure. It's like having alt-itis but it all kind of helps the same character. smile
