Mass Effect Andromeda all weekend long.
2  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Horizon Zero Dawn on: March 23, 2017, 05:36:13 PM
There is no "Death Penalty" so go ahead and try them. If you die you reload back next to the guy ready to do the trial over again. Trust me, I know this. slywink

The only real gate to the hunting ground trials is that for some you need a specific weapon type that you may not have bought yet.

If you get frustrated go do something else upgrade your skills, get some more health, some better weapon mods, whatever.

Don't worry about the choices too too much. It isn't very hard to get everything eventually, but TiLT is right on Silent Strike and Lure being A#1 get em first skills.

Still curious about the negativity - if this wasn't a Mass Effect sequel, would people be more interested?  I guess I'm just lucky that I don't feel excess expectations or whatever from the previous games?  There just aren't a lot of sci-fi games with this kind of depth and storytelling combining RPG and action elements.  Most of the games in this venue are slanted toward the action side, so I'm enjoying a game that appears to be more interested in telling a big story with me in the thick of it.

I mean Horizon Zero Dawn just came out and it has probably one of the best Sci-Fi stories to be in a game.

I would say I would be the litmus test here having just finished HZD on Saturday and about to start ME:A, but I am notoriously easy to please so get get your salt-lick out before reading my impressions to come.

Unlike rittchard I have finished all three ME games. I am very interested to see how this plays out.

Of course, Horizon has those batteries hidden in the ancient caves (I'm not using the right nomenclature here, but it's the glowing green thingies you find underground), and if you find them all, you can get the best armor in the game, apparently.

If I hadn't googled for the location of the last one I am almost certain I would have missed it. Pretty much all but the last are obvious. The first you had to look for as well, but that was when you were still looking everywhere for interesting stuff before realizing it's just going to be another damn supply crate that you don't need.

Loved the game. I also love that everything was challenging but manageable all the way through. I never wanted to throw my controller, but it was never too easy either.

Horizon Zero Dawn... I ought to finish it up this weekend. I hit max level Wednesday and I just have story missions left (and knocking down those damn training dummies I missed).

Oh, I do that, except with all the lead flying the tanker tends to get set on fire, which leaves me the unenviable task of leaping from my vehicle and running up to tag the tanker before it explodes icon_eek

For the record, you can successfully complete those missions by capturing a destroyed vehicle... trust me. slywink

Yeah, I am all stealth all the way. I like taking down an enter area without ever raising the alarm. Figuring out how to use synch shots to take down groups without alerting other groups.

A couple times I have incited a fight between the cartel and Unidad. I'd love to figure out how to do that intentionally, because Unidad wipes the floor with the cartel and they are easy to pick off afterwards.

I'm at around 25 hours for real now, my previously reported 25 was actually 22. Tongue I think I am level 33 now. Getting Blazing Suns on hunting ground trials gives a LOT of xp. I'm still having a blast with it. I like the stealth gameplay, but also the frantic battles against the big machines, the exploration aspect, the challenges of the hunting grounds... some of those are HARD. The one where you need to tie down tramplers and blow off the underbelly part... I have yet to get 1 of those. Freaking tramplers. I may be able to complete it, but a Blazing Sun seems impossible.

On top of all of that is the unfolding mystery of Aloy's story and the story of the world.

I'd complain about the way upgrades are gated behind rare drops, but then I found a vendor that sells the rare drops. They aren't cheap, but there's not much else to do with your money.

It's not really a shooter. I don't do console shooters either, this is closer to assassin's creed or something like that.

Except the vast majority of combat is shooting a bow, isn't it?  From everything I've seen and read it's like Far Cry Primal with cyber stuff.

It depends how you play, but yes the bow is a big piece of it. I would never play call of duty or anything like that on a controller, but this doesn't approach that. Yes you use a bow, but you can slow down time to get that perfect shot when you need. When playing stealthy you have all the time in the world. When fighting machines, you can click R3 to slow time down to hit that blaze canister, otherwise you are just unloading when you get the chance and getting the hell out of the way the rest of the time. There is a skill that's slows down time whenever you shoot when jumping or sliding.

I think you guys are doing yourselves a disservice skipping this because console shooter... on the other hand, there are a lot of other games to play.

About 25 hours in and still loving it. Hit level 30 last night. Still plenty of difficult fights to be had and lots of unexplored areas on the map. I think I spend more time looking for rare bits to buy equipment upgrades than I do completing quests. Not really, but sometimes it feels like it.

Same here for GR Wildlands.  Ready to go, although with Horizon out, it will be a tough choice.

Luckily(?) the split between PC and PS4 makes this less of a problem for me until the weekend. The PS4 is up in the media room and I don't generally isolate myself from the family on weeknights so I won't be playing much HZD during the week, so that will be Ghost Recon Wildlands time.

I paid no attention to this at all as a PS4 exclusive and not having a PS4, but yesterday for some reason I decided to take a look. I watched a couple hours of ChristopherOdd playing it... now I have to get a PS4. It is reminiscent of other games I have enjoyed and it looks pretty damn cool.

All I have to figure out now is if I need a PS4 Pro. 4k projectors are stupid expensive and I am not doing PSVR so is there any call for it? better performance in 1080p? Wrong thread for this I guess.  Tongue

I appreciate the "enemy in this area" cloud. It's less specific than the "he's right here!" marker in SE4, but still tells me I need to be careful. It would be less of a crutch if the cloud were bigger, but I'll take it and would sorely miss it if it were gone. I want to know if I am done or not.

Sepiche is a regular on OO. I don't know if he posts over here as well.

I had a lot of fun with it. My single player AI fears appear to be largely unfounded.

I did manage to get my character stuck last night. I parachuted into the side of a building, went through a wall and was trapped behind cardboard boxes that I was unable to move. Oh the game also managed to crash my PC. I didn't even know WIN10 still had BSODs. They look different, but it's clearly what it was.

The first area was way too easy and the second area may be a touch too hard, but I guess it is good to see the whole spectrum.

I almost loaded up Dead Rising 2 which I never finished... I may do that yet. I got stuck on a boss fight and just couldn't get past it. When I played DR3, I got stuck on the final boss. I started over keeping my levels and annihilated him after playing through again. I guess I need to do that for 2 as well. Apparently that's not a thing in 4. It's probably for the best.

I finally restarted and finished DR2 yesterday, just six years after release. DR4 arrives tomorrow. I really hope it doesn't also arrive Sunday.  icon_redface

Minor update a couple months later. I think I put about 4 hours into DR4. It just didn't click with me. I think it is like the Saints Row games. I loved the early ones, but later on the escalation to ridiculousness really put me off. This isn't as ridiculous as SR4, but it feels like the same trend.

i *think* I am nearing the end of my Long War 2 game. I have plasma weapons, 20 or so master sergeants and a shadow chamber, what more could you need?

If I finish it up I will go back to Sniper Elite 4, which has been a lot of fun in my two plays of the first mission.
