Little B 8.1 started playing Minecraft last night.  That's going to be an...interesting experience for her.  This is her first PS4 game (everything else has been on WiiU) and is also the first one where she has to adjust a camera view.  I forget sometimes how ingrained that reflex is for us, and how difficult it can be for someone who has never done it before.  I also realized that without a base knowledge of how things function, Minecraft can actually be a really difficult game.  If you've never used a pickaxe, for example, how would you know you need it?  Or what materials might go into making one?  The tutorial told her to build a furnace, put in sand, and fuel it with charcoal to make glass.  That entire process was completely foreign to her, and she became frustrated very quickly.  Will be interesting to see if she sticks with it or gives up.

Heh. My kids taught *me* how to do stuff in Minecraft.

Bloodborne has really gotten its claws into me.

I played it most of last weekend and I only have one boss left before I go into the ending (geezus that is one tough wet nurse). I have been looking at what it takes for the platinum trophy and am considering it. I have actually already covered a LOT of the bases. The big challenge would be doing all the chalice dungeons and very carefully getting all three endings. All the chalice dungeons would extend the game significantly and add a bunch of boss fights. I am not 100% I want to take it that far... but then again, no other games are coming out that I am really interested in and it's still five weeks until any birthday gifts are revealed.

So, I guess the platinum trophy won't extend the game that long. I got it Sunday afternoon. I'm not sure what it will be next weekend but it won't be Bloodborne again.

First boss down in Bloodborne and I think I know where to go for the second boss (found an area I had totally missed before). I'll be going after him tonight, which I think opens up a new area. I think I am in it for the long haul... Delsin will have to wait.

Yeah, I guess I went all in. I am one trophy shy of platinum on Bloodborne... but that last trophy is a stone cold bitch. I have to beat 8 more chalice dungeon bosses to get the last trophy... and 3 of them have to be done with halved health and healing. I have probably tried the next boss 30 times. I have watched numerous videos and I just can't get it done. I'm taking a break now before I break something. The final bosses in the "story" were cake compared to this. The worst of it is that one video I watched was someone defeating this boss at LEVEL FOUR! I am level 109 or so.

6  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: 2017 - Most Anticipated titles of this calendar year ... on: April 19, 2017, 10:40:23 PM
I'll just edit Engine's list down to my interests:

Quote from: EngineNo9 on April 18, 2017, 08:09:17 PM

Middle Earth: Shadow of War - Monolith/Warner Bros - August 22
State of Decay 2 - Undead Labs/Microsoft - XB1/PC - fall?
Red Dead Redemption 2 - Rockstar - XB1/PS4 - fall?
Spider-Man - Insomniac/Sony - PS4  - fall?

Games that have come and gone:
Ghost Recon Wildlands
Sniper Elite 4
Mass Effect: Andromeda

There is nothing really huge for me coming. Shadow of War is probably my most anticipated.

...same and I am pretty sure I didn't buy anything last week. Still have Bloodborne and infamous 2 to finish up before I buy anything else. At that point it should be closing in on my birthday and I might score a game or two (Nioh and The Last of Us are on the top of that list). With a little luck it may be a while before I buy anything.

Still nothing coming until August that I am actually waiting for.

I finished up Just Cause 3 and Rise of the Tomb Raider this week and realized I had Wolfenstein The New Order sitting on my "To Play" shelf since last year. Fired it up and whatever I was expecting, this ain't that. It's a genuinely solid actioner but one with character growth, strong dialogue and dramatic situations, and a great plot. It makes me wish I'd cranked it up earlier.

But hey, I may be late to the party but at least I made it.

Heh. I checked to be sure it was the same game. Steam says I played 65 minutes about two months. I thought it was terrible. Different strokes.

Oh, and you didn't mention Dragon Quest Builders, which is a bit like a third person Minecraft with an actual world and some light RPG questing.  Might not have staying power, but fun if you get it on sale.

And there was Tearaway Unfolded, but you may not want that if you're not into platforming at all.

I see my kids playing it all the time and I tried it out a little just to see, but I still don't get Minecraft and the like. Light RPG questing makes it sound a little less sandbox, but it's rather cartoony too. No thanks.

Platforming is right up there with sandbox in the list of keywords that make Coop look elsewhere.

I will say I am a bit bothered by the openness of Bloodborne. First, I have no idea what I am doing and the game doesn't really help in that regard. I only know how to level up because I saw it in a video. I still have no idea where to go next, though I have managed to open a few doors so when I figure it out, I will be able to get there  faster when I die.

I might check out Monster Slayers on steam if I get bored enough. I still have Sims 4 installed.

Monster Slayers was checked out and I fully approve. Very cool.

I also bought infamous: Second Son and Bloodborne on Sunday and spent most of the day between the two. Enjoying both.
16  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS4] Help Coop pick a PS4 game to play on: April 09, 2017, 04:18:46 PM
I tried a R&C game last gen. Not for me.

I bought Bloodborne and infamous: Second Son. I have only tried Bloodborne so far and yeah. it's hard. The part that bothers me the most is I have no idea where I need to be going so it's trial and error filled with death. I make it a good ways past the first real checkpoint and can't find another checkpoint. I did get out of my n00b gear, but that's about it. Taking a break so I don't hurt someone.

I think I played the original Kingdom Hearts a thousand years ago, I don't think it's for me, but when it gets cheaper maybe.

I watched the first hour or so of Persona 5 on youtube and it was mostly confusing. Then I see posts about the mechanics later in the game and it sounds kind of complicated.

Nier: Automata will get another look when it's cheaper.

Until Dawn needs to be really cheap for the length of it.

There isn't a single game I am looking forward to until August, so I will probably be trying a lot of these one way or another.

So in the Scorpio thread there was a list of PS4 exclusives and since I bought a Pro to play Horizon Zero Dawn, I figured I would check them out. I knew *nothing* about most of these games before today. Below are my quick impressions from what I saw on youtube where available.

Horizon Zero Dawn - Love

Infamous: Second Son - maybe...
Bloodborne - Dark Souls-esque, cheap
Nioh - Dark Souls style - interested
The Last of Us - interested
Spider Man - trailer only- interesting

Persona 5 - JRPG, terrible presentation
Uncharted 4 - hated uncharted 3
Ratchet and Clank - not into platformers
Dragon Quest Heroes 2 - hack and slash
God of War - played 1 or 2, not interested
Kindom Hearts - JRPG, not my style
Tales series - tried one on PC, JRPG, not interested
Nier Automata - God of war in thigh boots with a side of 2d shooter
Yakuza 0 - meh
Gravity Rush - ummm what?
Until Dawn - choose your own adventure?
Hellblade - not out, reminiscent of Horizon Zero Dawn?
Days Gone - zombie game?
Danganronpa - what?
Ni No Kuni 2 - no
Dynasty Warriors - no
Killzone - shooter
The Last Guardian - got tired of shadow of the colossus
Ace Combat - not my thing
Death Stranding - umm wtf?
The Order 1886 - meh
Trails of Cold Steel - jrpg
Berserk - hack and slash
Zero Escape- puzzle-y?

Now for the discussion-y bit. As you can see I have my own tastes and they eliminate a lot of what the PS4 has to offer. Feel free to try to convince me I am wrong about any games you love, but know that I am a curmudgeon and will take some convincing. Of the games in the top group that are of interest to me, what should I know. I will go into a little more detail on my thoughts on them here.

The Last of Us Remastered is a must play without even looking. I just never got to it on PS3. I have it on my birthday list (seven weeks away, mark your calendars!).

Bloodborne and Nioh. I played a little bit of Dark Souls on the PC and while the challenge was a bit off-putting it was really the uninteresting world that ruined it for me. Both Bloodborne and Nioh (particularly Nioh) look more interesting. Bloodborne is cheap so I might just buy that to try it out. Nioh is more interesting, but new so still expensive. I'll put it on the birthday list.

Spider-man isn't out yet, so nothing to do there. I enjoyed the couple of modern spider-man games I remember playing. I don;t remember what game or platform though.

Finally infamous: Second Sons look pretty cool. I think when infamous came out there was another similar game on PC that I chose just because it was on PC and I didn't like PS3 controllers. I hate the PS4 controller less.

Thoughts?

Now, how about that Scorpio?   icon_confused

This thread got me to add Nioh to my birthday list after watching some gameplay videos. On the other hand, watching Persona 5 had the opposite effect, whatever that might be. I don't even recognize the names of most of those exclusives as a primarily AAA PC gamer with a pretty limited set of genres of interest.

I basically own an XBOne for Forza Horizon. Note: I have been an XBox guy since the beginning. I think I have played a sum total of 4 playstation games during the PS3 and 4 generations. Dead Rising and Forza were my big reasons (along with better network connectivity Tongue). Dead Rising has lost me by going more and more over the top. I have lost interest in the Forza main games and only care about Horizon now and hey, I can play them on my PC!

Needless to say, I don't see any reason to get a Scorpio.

I gave EA $5 because I couldn't wait for Andromeda so I still have two weeks of Access and I wanted to give Mirror's Edge another try.

FFXV didn't happen.
Mirror's Edge still isn't clicking with me... also the performance was horrible in some places which seems kind of crazy given the age of the game vs the power of my rig.
GR: Wildlands saw a pretty good bit of play, I'm getting closer to the end game there. One last 4 skull territory to take out then it's 5 skulls all the way.

While I was trying to figure out what to play I finally started a few "Games with Gold" entries.
Assassin's Creed Chronicles: China... side scroller assassin's creed. I only played a little bit of it and it was ok, but I kept restarting for perfection and that bothered me.
Project Cars... the twitchiness of the kart controls made me want to vomit (and I don't get motion sickness), next.
Ryse: Son of Rome... this one clicked with me. It became available 4/1 and I finished it on 4/2. Once I got the combat mechanics down it was a lot of fun.
I still have Lost Odyssey and How to Survive: Storm Warning in the Games with Gold "to be played" queue. Maybe next weekend. I don't know when the next big AAA release is. The only thing I am aware of is the new Mordor game in August.

Thanks for that note. I do have a Wii U and was thinking of getting it there since that is connected to the family room TV. It's basically a forgotten system in our house, at least until the end of next month when my oldest gets Zelda for his birthday.

So how was it???

I played 49 hours in 10 days (note I have a full time job and 2 elementary school kids so that's a lot of play time) so you could say I enjoyed it. The only negative I had was the time to travel between systems over and over again to finish off side quests. Inter-system travel animation was cool the first time. It was tedious the next 50 or 60 times. The story was interesting, but it's clearly just the beginning of something bigger.

Note: Coop is a sucker for AAA games so take his comments with a grain of salt.

I finished Sniper Elite 4 before HZD came out. I finished HZD before Mass Effect came out. Once I finish Mass Effect (this coming weekend), I'll see if I can get back into FFXV or maybe Ghost Recon Wildlands. If not, I will play XCOM2 again. I don't think there is anything else coming that I am waiting for until August and I forget what that was.

The only real gate to the hunting ground trials is that for some you need a specific weapon type that you may not have bought yet.

If you get frustrated go do something else upgrade your skills, get some more health, some better weapon mods, whatever.

Still curious about the negativity - if this wasn't a Mass Effect sequel, would people be more interested?  I guess I'm just lucky that I don't feel excess expectations or whatever from the previous games?  There just aren't a lot of sci-fi games with this kind of depth and storytelling combining RPG and action elements.  Most of the games in this venue are slanted toward the action side, so I'm enjoying a game that appears to be more interested in telling a big story with me in the thick of it.

I mean Horizon Zero Dawn just came out and it has probably one of the best Sci-Fi stories to be in a game.

I would say I would be the litmus test here having just finished HZD on Saturday and about to start ME:A, but I am notoriously easy to please so get get your salt-lick out before reading my impressions to come.

Of course, Horizon has those batteries hidden in the ancient caves (I'm not using the right nomenclature here, but it's the glowing green thingies you find underground), and if you find them all, you can get the best armor in the game, apparently.

If I hadn't googled for the location of the last one I am almost certain I would have missed it. Pretty much all but the last are obvious. The first you had to look for as well, but that was when you were still looking everywhere for interesting stuff before realizing it's just going to be another damn supply crate that you don't need.

Loved the game. I also love that everything was challenging but manageable all the way through. I never wanted to throw my controller, but it was never too easy either.
