Yeah my typing speed comes mostly from playing MUDs way back when. Also, I've worked in survey research for many years. Entering data myself meant I didn't have to design a program for and then instruct the morons we had in data entry who would suck up all the project dollars with their slow asses.

Plus I cheated with speed hax.

Oh and the split keyboard improves my speed by like 5-10 wpm.

You know until some developer goes out on a limb and invent a game with out fed-ex quest and grinding 10 mobs all MMO will be compared to WoW.

That's not really the case for me. I thought BioWare did a pretty good job of eliminating the grind, though they've replaced it with a quest grind. There will be some planets where you hate seeing another quest giver and you just want it to stop. However, many of the quests are decent enough.

Its comparisons to WoW for me come from the game mechanics: the rage meter that you have to build up as a Sith Warrior, the energy bar that quickly depletes and regenerates for the Assassin (in WoW I remember as a rogue choosing a talent that adds +10 to energy - in SWTOR there's the exact same talent), the pool of mana for the Sorcerer.

I know WoW didn't invent those things, but it's the popular one, so it gets the comparisons. I am disappointed that BioWare didn't have the guts or skill to come up with a system that was even slightly different, though I understand the reasons for so close a copy - $$$.

My feeling is that because it is such a close copy of WoW, SWTOR can never be considered a great game. To borrow a line from American Chopper, BioWare is a cake decorator here. They didn't bake the cake. They just took the same cake and added some frosting.

So which classes are known to have the best stories and best companions?

Imperial Agent seems to get the most votes for best storyline. I only played one to 10 and didn't get enough of a feel for it. A lot of people also like the Bounty Hunter storyline. For companions, I think Sith Warrior and Bounty Hunter are strongest for the empire (I never played republic).

But 2 months just doesn't seem that long to add in new stuff, unless you just want polishing.  I'd say 6 months is a more realistic time frame for real serious improvements.

I don't necessarily need to see major improvements in those 2 months, but I do need to see some evidence that BioWare is serious about PvP. Right now it's obvious they don't really give a turd about PvP.
45  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic announced on: December 05, 2011, 07:33:36 AM
And all beta testing is now done. Anyone who's read this thread likely knows my thoughts on the game, but after several months of testing I figured I'd summarize:

PvE
WoW with lightsabers. Sorry, but it's true. They took WoW and customized it a little. They even took some talents directly from WoW and copied them exactly.
Linear. Dark or Light, doesn't really matter. Choices don't really matter. No decision you make is going to really affect anything. It can't, of course, because it's an MMO. However...
This is a single player MMO. It is fun to roll in a group, but it's certainly not necessary and the rewards for doing so are nothing worth writing about.
The coolest part about the game is the companions. They have surprisingly competent AI and are the one thing that differentiates this game from the rest. Unfortunately, the Sith Inquisitor companions mostly suck and are completely uninteresting. Roll another class if you want a decent story and companions.
The story is of utmost importance to BioWare, yet the Sith Inquisitor storyline sucks ass.
They've given inexplicably little attention to the social aspect of an MMO. There aren't that many emotes. There's no mini-games like pazaak or whatever it's called. There's not much encouragement to group or socialize or interact with other players.

PvP - I'm what most would call a hardcore PvP'er, so judge my opinions accordingly
PvP is an afterthought to BioWare.
This game is designed from the ground up to deter World PvP. You don't see anyone of the opposing faction until level 25 or much higher. Even then you go on to planets that are instanced and the 2 factions don't share.
There is really no reason for PvP servers because of this design philosophy.
They had a fun system where you got a nice piece of PvP gear (probably too nice) every level if you did a few warzones here and there. They replaced that with a grinding system.
At level 50 they now have a system where your PvP gear is decided by RNG (random number generating). They have made end-game PvP gear an enormous grind and based on luck. I was able to attain 8 pieces of PvP gear. 3 of those pieces were duplicates I could not use.
1 of their 3 warzones (Voidstar) does not currently work most of the time. It kicks you out to character select or crashes. No one has any idea how ties are decided. It seems to award every tie to the Republic.
Their end game PvP content is horribly designed, buggy and unfinished. The western shelf of Ilum is basically a big warzone. On one end is an Imperial base and a Republic base in the other. Each base is attackable (or repairable if it's been destroyed) every 5 minutes. In between the 2 bases are 3 assault zones - northern, central and southern. In those zones they have walkers who do not go anywhere but stamp their feet to give the illusion of movement. Every 5 minutes 3 of those walkers are attackable. You click on them and a rocket launcher comes out of your ass and you destroy it 10 seconds later. You then move on to the next objective. It is in your best interest to let the other side take the objectives back every 5 minutes, because you cannot complete your mission by defending points - you have to take them. So the 2 factions tend to just ride by each other and destroy the objectives and cycle through. Unfortunately, several of the objectives break. This morning there were only 2 out of the 5 objectives working.

I am still buying the game and looking forward to it. However, I am only giving BioWare a max 2 months before they have to show some serious improvement on PvP if they're going to keep me. It's obvious they put PvP on the backburner to get the game to launch. Now that it's launching, it's time to put up.

Actually in the launch build they've completely removed it from preferences. So it looks like if you want AA in SWTOR you'll have to force it through your video card.

No you don't need to make spoilers about spoilers. You need a little common courtesy and thoughtfulness, just a little... enough to say, "spoiler from the comic about what's coming up." Instead you put a spoiler in there that multiple people did not want to see and you gave no idea about what the spoiler would entail.

You've mentioned this fact several times over the past few weeks, and I'm specifically focusing on what you are saying about quest areas not overlapping much.

Is there anything to prevent a group of level 40+ characters from going to the "level 25 planet", traveling to the opposing faction's side of the planet, and then locking down an entire quest area?  If there is nothing to prevent this, then what I've described here will BE the defacto world PvP.
There is nothing to prevent it, no. However, there are steps taken to make this kind of act more of an annoyance than it's worth for the attackers. For one, there are a lot of very high level guards. So the reality of the situation is, you go to attack some people and they retreat back to their guards and you spend some time taking pot shots at each other until they get enough numbers to zerg you. Actually this is what Ilum is largely like as well, lol. Two, if you die you most likely have to go to your cloner, which is a LONG ways away (think 10+ minutes).

But yes it is possible and if such an event is worrisome to someone, he should roll a PvE server.

The Grey Council is originally a Gamers With Jobs guild but evolved into a Wanderers type guild because of the problem with forum guilds.

You can have up to 3 adversaries/allies. I don't believe there are any restrictions like max 1 adversary or anything.

Well, I was just in the weekend betas, and I played a limited amount of time because I didn't want to spoil it later.  That being said, I leveled my Bounty Hunter up to level 10.  Question -- what exactly is a Flashpoint?  Are there any before level 10?  I remember one quest on Hutta that was given out by a Twilek who asked me to venture into a non-instanced heroic factory and destroy some things.  I recall we also picked up some other item (can't remember the name of the item off the top of my head, but you assemble them into something?).  Was that a Flashpoint, or is it something different altogether?

A flashpoint is a themed group instance.

There are heroics, which are typically also group instances, but flashpoints are not associated with a planet. They're found off the faction hub in the space station. The first flashpoint is around level 10. You can do it before 10, but it really helps to be level 10 with an advanced class first.
55  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic announced on: November 30, 2011, 03:37:41 PM
I tried to test that Colicoid War Game flashpoint but when we entered the instance we were transported to the twilight zone - a huge flat checkered area with no walls or landmarks, its edges dropping off into space. We couldn't get out of it with the /stuck command. So we tried entering warzones and coming out. That worked for my group mates but not me. So I ran and jumped off into space. That worked smile. I believe they've fixed it late last week but not sure.

And I would disagree with your statement of not running the first flashpoint with a PUG. You still get your dark or lightside points no matter what your team picks and it's great, easy xp. I think you do get a title for your light/dark choice, so if you want to choose something different, just run it again. It's quick and easy enough.

No, I got that part, but you have a huge problem with your logic.

I say there's pretty much no world PvP. This is PvP out in the world, not in the warzones.
You say PvP is "alive and well," but there's not a lot of folks to fight except for the weekend surge.
The problem with your logic is the weekend surge people are almost 100% under level 25, and probably 98% under level 22. These people are not engaged in world PvP in any way.

Dear Lord Cheeba - you have already levelled that many toons to near max?? Whats left for you to do in this game? And how quick did you do that?

Been beta testing for a good few months now. I still have pretty much all the end game left to do as well as several flashpoints I haven't done. When I got my assassin to 50, there was nothing done for the end game. No operations, no Ilum (it existed but nothing really to do), nothing. So I got him to 50 and didn't really play after that until the wipe when I started my first Sorc.

I level quickly because I spacebar through nearly all conversations. That way I can keep the content relatively fresh for when the game goes live. This last 50 Sorc has been easy because for a good few days there they experimented with raising the xp for warzones. I would get literally 30k-40k xp in a warzone. Also, I stopped playing for several days for Skyrim and had rested double-xp for like the last 12 levels.

From what I read over on the Wanderers boards, it seemed like people preferred PvE this time.  I'm kind of curious about what a PvP server would be like, as I didn't level a character high enough to get to a point where I was questing in an area with the opposite faction.  Anyone try it out in beta?

I've leveled a 50 assassin (wiped) then a 43 sorc (wiped) and now a 50 sorc (not yet wiped, yay) all on the main general testing PvP server. There is no world PvP in SWTOR. There is almost no difference between a PvP server and a PvE server because they've designed the game specifically to discourage world PvP. You will not see anyone of the opposing faction that you can kill in a non-warzone setting until around level 25. Even then you'd probably have to go out of your way to find them, as the quest areas don't criss-cross very much. On my 43 sorc I did not cross paths with a republic player until level 41. On the 50 sorc I actually saw a couple on Tatooine in my late 20's, and then went actively looking for fights in my 30's on Alderaan.

There is a possibility for what one might call "griefing" in this game, but it is slim. When you die you can choose to rez at the cloner which takes you far away from the battle and to an area that is protected by guards that a 50 wouldn't bother with.

It's different for different classes. Also, it's not level-dependent, it's where you're at in the story. For me on my Sith Sorcerer, I got my first companion around 8-9. I got the droid when I got my ship at 17. I got my next companion at 25-26ish. Then another around 36. Then another around 43. Then the last one at 49. But I tend to be over-leveled by a large margin because I PvP a lot.

A page or so ago we were told that we didn't need the trinity for the first flashpoint. Healer, Tank, and what's the third one again.....EPA? Anyway, I was wondering if you found the trinity wasn't necessary for flashpoints up to level 25? Also, what's the max group for a flashpoint, and does the max number include companions - so if the max is 4 then no one's companion shows up in the flashpoint.

The trinity is healer, tank and dps (damage per second, or just a dude who's focused on doing damage). The first flashpoint at level 10 is designed for 2 players now, and it didn't need the trinity before anyways. So any 4 people should be able to do it just fine.

After that, however, you can do flashpoints (and heroics, which are quests that recommend either 2 or 4 players) with fewer than the recommended number, but it will probably take some experience. Companions count as a group member. There have been a few times where it's difficult to find a group, so we use a companion and 3-man a 4-man recommended event. We've also 2-man'd a 4-man, but that's more difficult and rare. If you're good, or especially if you're tank and you have a healer companion or vice versa, you can often solo the 2-man stuff.

But it's really recommended that you have the trinity after that first flashpoint. The newer flashpoints they did were more difficult (which was much needed). As a sorc I am usually able to heal well enough for a flashpoint even though I'm not spec'd for it. However, with one of the new flashpoints I had to respec full healing for us to be able to do it.

-Can we re-size and move around inventory windows yet?

Interviews and convention panel discussions suggest those (imho) badly needed basic features won't make it by launch, but I'm trying to remain an optimist.  icon_smile That's the first thing I'm going to check in the stress test.
New build today. LOTS of huge fixes, like PvP equipment (yay I'll have motivation to play again). Unfortunately, nothing about bringing the UI out of the 20th century.

It opens up a huge amount on other worlds. It's still linear as hell, of course, but some of the worlds are massive.

I'm finding no reason to play right now. I'm a PvP'er and as I'm nearing level 50 I'm running into level 50 republics who have full PvP gear. The empire has no PvP gear. So I'm running up against people who have an innate 7% advantage in healing and damage against me, and I have not a single thing to fight for.

It really scares me that BioWare's team is not big enough to work on both PvP and PvE at the same time.

Some helpful tips for you guys playing this weekend:

If you are using ATI, update your drivers. I think it's 11.10 right now. You don't want 11.8.
You have from 5pm Central Friday to 11:59pm Central Sunday to play. You'll probably spend about 3-5 hours on your starter planet which takes you to level 10, or very close to 10. At around level 8-9 you'll get your first companion.
Once you finish off the planet you'll go to your space station hub. As soon as you walk on to the hub, if you are level 10 you will immediately see a quest giver who will tell you to choose your advanced class (AC). You will then go over to your trainer and make your choice.
At this level you're ready for your first Flashpoint as well. Make sure to do it as it's a good intro to the game and how it's different from other MMO's. You'll see people calling for tanks, heals, dps for the flashpoint. You don't need the trinity to do it. Just get 4 people of whatever class and run the thing.
This station is also the first chance you get to choose your gathering/crafting professions. Don't worry much about this as I don't think it'll be worth the limited time you have. But if you do want to take a look at the crafting by all means go ahead.
If you have any problems with something not displaying properly, hold ctrl and then hit u twice. This resets the UI. This fixes a surprising number of problems.
At level 10 you are able to enter warzones. On the bottom right of your radar is a republic/imperial symbol. Click on it to bring up the queue.
"When will I get my ship?" is one of the more common questions. You get it around level 17ish, more or less. It's part of your class story, so you have no chance of missing it. But it's at the end of the 2nd planet and many of you won't get that far in one weekend.
Go to the Game Test forum and read the stickies. Don't bother reading anything else, especially if it cuts into your play time.
Have fun!

So don't fret not getting an invite. We're lucky if we can play 30 minutes before the servers go down for several hours. This build has been horrendous.

They've added a level of polish to the game that was badly needed. It's starting to look like a finished game. They increased the difficulty so it's not such a cake walk anymore. They've made usability upgrades to make things smoother, like not having to hit sprint every 2 seconds.

Then they added a shit-ton of new bugs and other problems. They removed all PvP gear except Republic level 50 gear. They removed the option to unify colors to the chestpiece, supposedly so they can see how badly colors match now I guess? It's hard to figure a lot of this stuff out because they don't communicate at all.

How big are these RFP's? If they're anything like the RFP's I've dealt with in business, then it shouldn't be difficult. It's a book report, just bullet-point the important topics that would be relevant to your company. If they're RFP's like I've dealt with in academia, however, then screw that.

But I would definitely do it and not tell the manager "to do her job." If it is her job then the quality of your work is going to fall on her, not you. Also, if you ever want a promotion you need to demonstrate that you can do the work above you and/or you can do new things. As a manager myself, if I asked someone to do something, even if it wasn't something he'd normally do, and he refused to do it, that person would forever be labeled "drone" in my eyes.

Mark of the Assassin is a very good expansion, if you like Felicia Day. She essentially plays herself and it's a little difficult to believe that she's part of the Qun and some dangerous assassin because she's also very whimsical and flirty and, well, Felicia Day. There is a lot of humor in this expansion, which is good, but they go a bit overboard and it gets a little too goofy at times. There's new banter and conversations with all the party members, so that's good.

One fight is stupid hard with insta-kill spells. You have to hit the guy with a huge hit like an assassinate in literally less than 1 second after the fight begins or you die (there are other ways of fighting, but I've got a rogue and I'm stuck with Tallis who's a rogue as well, so I didn't have many class abilities available to me). It's one of the first fights too. As I said before, I really recommend waiting until after you get back from the Deep Roads before doing it. Doesn't really make sense otherwise anyways, as Tallis invites you to this scheme because you're a noble who has an invitation to an Orlesian hunt and party.

The expansion took me a good couple-few hours, so I feel I got my $10 worth out of it.

Yeah Morgan with the intersect makes it a bit too goofy. Ready for Chuck to get it back already. Appreciate Yvonne in thigh high lingerie though!
