Arise!

So I got my beta key (really easy to do now, just visit the site) and this game is great! I'm totally addicted. It is a complex game, you have to really want to play it, but it is also really rewarding. The crafting is the best I've seen in a game since SWG. It's a really involved process to craft a lot of the things, some of which takes days to make or come to fruition. For example, to make a leather hat requires you to kill a critter for its hide. Then you dry the hide (first make a dryer, collect branches) which takes 8 rl hours. Then you prepare the hide with lime in a bucket (bucket requires a nail which you probably have to buy and a board, which requires a sawbuck, which requires wood and nails as well). You then put it in a tanning tub (again, boards and nails) and prepare the tanning fluid by taking a critter's brain and putting it in water and putting the water in the tub. Wait 8 hours and you get leather.

This certainly isn't going to appeal to everyone smile. But I like the depth involved.

Permadeath really adds an interesting dynamic to the game. You have to be suspicious of everyone. When you see someone, you don't know their name unless you make them kin (friend) and they allow it. Otherwise you can memorize people and give them your own name. Like early on I had a guy come into our camp and steal some of our stuff, so I memorized him as "Asshole" smile. The vast majority of encounters I've had with people in the game has been positive. But it's hilarious when you come off a game like SWTOR where you have a thousand people sitting on the fleet running around and jumping and then you come to this game where any time you see someone you need to be very careful and potentially log off before he can attack you. The skill to murder someone is extremely expensive and difficult to get. I'm looking forward to getting it down the road slywink.

Me and a couple OO'ers have a good sized settlement coming along nicely. We started with 4, but 1 has entered his busy time of the year and not around much and another only logs on rarely. Two of us are way too active, though. If anyone would like to join us we have plenty of room!

I am in shock that Blizzard is doing that. They've passed into the realm of outright hostility towards their customers. It's like they want to compete against EA for biggest dick of a gaming company for some reason.

In TOR anyways, they promised fighting with "hundreds" of people. Truth is, the engine can't handle more than 24 vs. 24 and even then it bogs down.

They went from 1.7 mil to 1.3 mil subscribers in a couple months.

That sounds like pretty good retention to me.

And that's why they gave out the free month right before they reported those numbers. So people like yourself who don't know any better might think that smile.
9  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: The next phase of MMO's on: June 03, 2012, 03:59:19 PM
They went from 1.7 mil to 1.3 mil subscribers in a couple months.
They had to give pretty much every subscriber a free month.
The vast majority of their servers are dead (with many servers having less than 50 total people online during prime time) and 6 months into the game people are converging on the 1-2 populated servers.
They laid off *200* people despite insisting that they would be keeping the entire team together.
They're now saying really stupid spin shit like, “Subscriber numbers are funny things. How you count them – the math you use – really matters, and there are lots of variables to consider,”

But mostly it's because expectations on this game were that it would be a huge success. It may make its money back, but this is a game that should be doing a lot better than breaking even.

Dunno what will happen but I think SWTOR's failure may potentially be a good thing for future MMO's. I think companies are going to think twice about taking WoW and slapping a new paint job on it from now on.

Why do they keep the price so high so long on a subsciption-based game? $40 isn't terrible now, but it's not great either...

They had a half price sale some time ago... a couple-few weeks. As things are going now, however, I would expect the price to be coming down drastically very soon.

And it's looking like layoffs have hit the SWTOR team. From Greg Zeschuk on the swtor forums:
Quote
Hey folks, since you’re reading this you may likely have heard that we’ve done some restructuring here on the SWTOR team. Sadly, we are bidding farewell to some talented, passionate and exceptionally hard-working people who helped make SWTOR a reality. Impacting people’s lives this way is always very hard, but we’re ensuring the affected people are treated with dignity, fairness and respect.

Looking back at launch, we all came together and did something historic. We executed one of the largest, most successful and stable launches of any MMO yet in industry history. That is not an easy feat for any development team or company and we are humbled and honored by our fan community’s strong support both at launch and beyond.

Looking forward, the studio remains vibrant and passionate about our many upcoming initiatives for Star Wars: The Old Republic. We still have a very substantial development team working on supporting and growing the game, and we feel we are in a strong position, with your continued involvement and feedback, to continue to build Star Wars: The Old Republic as one of the most compelling and successful online experiences in the world today. There are many strong initiatives planned for cool new content and new features that we’re excited to tell you about in the upcoming weeks and months.

Rest assured that we remain dedicated to delivering a high quality service in SWTOR to you, our fans, and we will continue to support and grow Star Wars: The Old Republic over the weeks, months and years to come.

Thanks,
Greg and Ray

MMO's lose subscribers, but I don't think you ever saw WoW servers with less than 100 people on them total.
15  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic announced on: May 21, 2012, 02:44:08 PM
 Roll Eyes

They obviously have enough funding behind the game to keep it going a long while, even while losing a ton of subscribers. In that sense it's nowhere near death.

But it doesn't matter how much you ignore the facts and dismiss it as "internet stuff", a game of this size having empty servers with everyone flooding to 1 server 6 months into the game is not a good thing. Having to give every subscriber a month of free game time does not indicate a healthy game either.

Last night in primetime on a weekend on my server, which was one of the more popular servers, there were around 24 people on the imperial fleet, which is by far the most populous side. That's dead, to me.
16  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic announced on: May 21, 2012, 04:24:09 AM
Amazingly, this game is just about dead.

There is one server that everyone has flocked to because all the other servers are ghost towns. It is just astonishing how poor a job BioWare has done. They had way too many servers and now it has bitten them in the ass. People aren't playing because the servers are empty and so that makes the servers even more empty. Around mid afternoon on a Sunday there were around 24 people on the fleet on my server. There is pretty much no chance to find a group for anything, from leveling up to the level 50 content. PvP queues are taking forever, with 1-2 level 50 games going on at a time. As a PvP'er, in the 6 months since release the only new content they've added is 1 warzone which is pretty much a carbon copy of an already existing warzone. They've actually removed other PvP content that was out there (Ilum) because it was so poorly designed.

I don't want to say the sky is falling or anything, but at this rate I will be astonished if they have more than 500k subscribers when EA has their next report. No doubt they have enough funding to continue, but this is going to be a massive failure if they don't get their asses to work quickly.
17  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Anyone hear of the MMO, Tera? on: May 03, 2012, 11:00:48 PM
I've been outspoken with my hatred of how BioWare pretty much just put a paint job over WoW when they made SWTOR, but looking at that combat video posted above, I don't get it.

I guess I'm just too much of a PvP guy, but that combat against that big guy looked boring as hell. Wack it, wait for it to turn to you, then move to the side and wack it some more. Repeat. Blech.
18  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic (dev posts, news items, fan sites etc.) on: April 13, 2012, 04:38:50 PM
DPS Sorcerer got nerfed into the ground. Just destroyed. Worse, they've scaled Expertise now so that damage is higher than damage reduction which is much higher than healing boost. So survivability is down on top of our damage being down.

And they buffed Marauder/Sentinel, who already were doing more damage than Sorc/Sage.

We are now beta testing PvP for BioWare. That's why they've given us the free 30 days.
19  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic (dev posts, news items, fan sites etc.) on: April 11, 2012, 11:06:50 PM
They have just now announced that Ranked Warzones will not be in the 1.2 update coming tonight, as promised. Instead, we will get... well, a preseason in phases - basically BioWare has no clue wtf they are doing.

They had some people coming back to the game for ranked warzones. They announced the removal of this key feature 7 hours before the patch.

I've mentioned my thoughts on DA2 quite a bit, but figure I'll defend it as most are trashing it too harshly here, I believe.

It was a bit of a disappointment, but a good game overall. I loved the rogue combat. I really applaud their attempt at innovation in the story, though it wasn't handled as well as it should have been. They didn't go the typical rpg epic story route where you go up against the darkest evil to ever face the world. They just did 10 years in the life of a guy who turned out to be rather extraordinary and was at the center of things when an uprising began. The pro here is that it was different, which is something so sorely needed in video games. The con was that the lack of epic-ness kinda put a damper on things.

The character interaction was excellent, though they went the safe and lazy route by making every character bisexual.

The lack of sets was inexcusable.

What was in store should have been a completed, finished game. What they gave us was the 2nd coming of KotoR2.

Given BioWare's massive fuck up here with Mass Effect 3 and their massive fuck up with Dragon Age 2 where they only used about 6 zones for the entire game, and given how much of a mess they've made SWTOR where they decided to not even come anywhere close to innovation, I believe BioWare just might be the laziest developer out there right now.
23  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic (dev posts, news items, fan sites etc.) on: March 17, 2012, 06:10:10 PM
1.2 Patch Notes on PTR

It's as I feared. BioWare is practicing population control by nerfing the popular classes and buffing ones they want to encourage.

Right now in high level PvP, the Marauder is the top damager by far. No one can touch him in pure damage output. I was OK with this as a dps Sorcerer because I had utility to make up for it. But now they've nerfed Sorcerer such that I will likely do 50% less damage than before. Oh yeah, and they buffed Marauder.

They are going to kill their own game.
24  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mass Effect 3 - Spoilers/Ending (Now with Spoiler Tags) on: March 15, 2012, 08:03:53 PM
Looks to me like BioWare didn't even really know wtf they were doing.
25  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mass Effect 3 - Spoilers/Ending (Now with Spoiler Tags) on: March 13, 2012, 01:53:46 PM
So by now BioWare has to know this was a gigantic fuck up. What they do to fix it will be interesting. Will they fix it? Will they come out with a new ending that is actually decent? Or will they cop out and say "this is how we feel creatively so this is what you get"?

If they offer paid DLC with a decent ending I think I'll just watch it on YouTube and not buy it. Ideally, to me, they'll realize their fuck up and take steps to make things right. Unfortunately I don't think they will because it would likely require new voice-over and a good bit of money.
26  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mass Effect 3 - Spoilers/Ending (Now with Spoiler Tags) on: March 13, 2012, 02:55:29 AM
Playing the game I was ready to call it the best gaming series ever. Then I hit the ending. It makes me not want to play it again.

What an utter failure on BioWare's part.
27  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mass Effect 3 - Impressions Incoming! on: March 09, 2012, 01:53:22 PM
The ending... bad. Really bad. The game was so awesome and they fucked up the ending. Will never understand why people can't end things well.
28  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic announced on: February 28, 2012, 08:13:51 AM
I would not be surprised if SWTOR's subscription base is 1/3rd of what it was at peak now. I'm lucky that my guild is doing OK, but I leveled up a healer and I literally could not find groups for the flashpoints. I think I only did 2 of them, though I tried to find groups for all of them. It's not good when a healer cannot find groups.

PvP'ers are quitting left and right. I think BioWare made a huge mistake by ignoring PvP in the beta. I read somewhere that BioWare said they were surprised by the amount people were participating in PvP in the game. There is no excuse for that, considering the huge amount of PvP that happened in beta.

They have also seriously stumbled with the community aspects of the game. There are no added community features in this MMO. They even refuse to foster community through server forums. The themepark design of the game limits interaction.

I hate to be one of those people, but I think this game is already in a decent bit of trouble.
29  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic (dev posts, news items, fan sites etc.) on: February 07, 2012, 10:58:37 AM
I do have the best equipment in the game. I have full Battlemaster gear. Gives me about a 12% advantage in PvP, though someone in raid gear will have more health and more of their primary stat than I have.

And they feel the need to nerf that 12%? Uggh.

Yes, I agree there need to be more incentives to PvP. The ranked matches will be very nice, but as I said months ago, they should have had enough people on their team to concentrate somewhat on PvP in the beta. Instead, they punted on PvP and it is now hurting them with an awful design in Ilum and little to no end game.
30  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic (dev posts, news items, fan sites etc.) on: February 07, 2012, 05:25:19 AM
Ah yes, the whole "everyone should be equal" argument. What a crock. Why don't we give everyone max level and the same equipment so then all the whiners who cry about imbalance will be satisfied?

There has to be something to work for in a game like this. There is no reason to PvP in this game except for equipment. Take out the equipment and... poof... there is no reason to PvP in this game. No reason to PvP in this game = me and my entire guild gone.

They're already on the point of failing and having a flood of PvP'ers leave the game for lack of content. Losing all the PvP'ers at this point could be disastrous for the longevity of this game.
31  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic (dev posts, news items, fan sites etc.) on: February 06, 2012, 03:16:29 PM
It seems BioWare just doesn't really know what it's doing and is grasping for ideas.

The rakata stimpack nerf (its 2nd major nerf), to make it the same power as a regular medpack but provide cost savings? Wow. So I have to run a heroic, each of which I can only do once a day, to get a chance at getting the item I need to craft the stimpack, and all that is just to save me money, when my only expense at level 50 is giving credits to my alts?

On top of that, they obviously have no idea what they're doing with PvP and are going to nerf the high end PvP equipment because poor noob 50's are dying.

I hope they start learning how to run an MMO fast because they are going to be losing a ton of subscribers with these nerfs and mismanagement.

33  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic announced on: January 27, 2012, 01:16:40 PM
It depends on the class. Sorcs have I think about the proper number of abilities. I use my 1-5 and F1-F5 keys (bottom quickslot and regular quickslot respectively) almost exclusively, so I can keep my right hand on the mouse most of the time with only the occasional clicking of abilities on the right side. Marauder, however, is just flat out ridiculous in the number of abilities they have.

PvP whine incoming!

The end-game PvP is being beta tested by us customers right now. BioWare truly has no idea what in the hell they are doing with Ilum. They are actually rewarding people end-game PvP equipment for running in circles collecting boxes that respawn. There is such an imbalance towards imperials (of which I am one) that the actual PvP constitutes a huge crowd of imperials waiting just outside the republic base and hoping to pull one of the unlucky bastards to his death. And it's all a laggy mess with single-digit fps even on decent machines. The valor gains are ridiculous as well, rendering the title of Battlemaster completely meaningless. If the populations were even close to being equal, it might work out OK. Unfortunately it seems BioWare hasn't bothered doing anything to try to keep the population equal (like maybe only allowing Republic on some high-pop servers because the Imperial side is full?).
34  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Star Wars: The Old Republic announced on: December 19, 2011, 04:12:14 PM
That's something geeks will say in chat all the time - "there are no rebs". Bleh, then why does the game itself call them rebels at times? Plus it's easier to say rebs than republic.

Yeah I got it through Origin and am not playing/didn't download from Origin.

It was weird. I checked at 7am and was able to play. For quite some time there were only about 30 people on Korriban, just the 1 shard. When I left Korriban there were maybe 80 people. So they are definitely light on people right now. I'm sure that'll change once work lets out.

But on a beta weekend I remember there being about 180 people on each Korriban shard and there were about 7-8 shards.
