Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Chinese county massacres 50,000 dogs

I have 6 dogs - count me among the dog freaks. What they are doing is totally unacceptable IMHO. There has to be other ways to deal with the problem. When we kill stock animals for food, at least it is usually a quick death. Beating an animal to death is not humane. Dogs are intelligent creatures, with distinct and unique personalities and most dog owners regard their dog as a family member. Thus, it is particularly hard for us accept such an atrocity.

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Are you in debt?

About $30,000 owed on my home equity line of credit for car, home improvements, 4 wheeler, and my daughter's college education, but I have about 3.5 times that much in savings, and my mortgage is paid off (2 years ago). I'm going to try to get the credit line paid down $10,000 per year for next three years, then I'll tap into it again to buy a new car (yeah). Sometimes I worry that I'm only saving a meager 4.6 percent of my salary, but I guess I'm doing OK. BTW, I'm about 5 years away from retirement eligibility.

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Where do you live - and what's so special about it?

Rolla, Missouri- Small town of 15000 or so in south central Missouri, home to Univ. of Missouri Rolla, which is primarily engineering oriented. We also have a USGS mapping center, at least for a while longer. Our main claim to fame is we are fairly close to the Ozark National Scenic Rivers, a couple of beautiful, spring fed, free flowing rivers that are ideal for a lazy float trip. I've lived here 19 years, no plans to move now.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / @#$%&@#$% Freaking ATI! I want my HL2 as promised!
|

I agree with OP. I think ATI has been very misleading concerning this promotion. To begin with, if you choose the CD option, they charge you $10 for shipping. Already, this makes the offer not so free. To make matters worse, they offered a "bonus" offer on their website which included a bundle of the original halflife and expansions. I ordered the bonus, paid the $10 under the impression that I would receive HL2 CDROM as part of this bonus. So when the game was released, I waited and waited, but no HL2 CD. I finally emailed them, and they told me I would have to pay another $10 for the HL2 CD. Now, I'm up to $20 if I choose to get the CDROM. I am very unhappy with ATI for the misleading information on their website to the point that I will probably not buy another ATI card.

I think that answers any question I've ever had about why government employees seem like they couldn't care less.
Most of the people at the state agency I work for care deeply about what they do. Many of us frequently put in over 40 hours/week.

What do you expect them to do ? They should pay for the return shipping, though.. I expect them to either send me a replacement or refund my money. Why should they expect me to return the game because of their screwup? It isn't even a game, the game CDs are missing. It is an empty box

That is so sad Happydog. I feel for you and your wife. I have six very loved and spoiled dogs, and I can't bear the thought of losing any of them. I know it must happen someday-that is why I give them lots of treats and petting now while I still can. Do yourself a favor and get a new pet in honor of Gia.

This isn't a "deal", but I want to warn anyone who is considering ordering from EBGames.com, do so at your own risk. I recently received an order from them, and one of the games obviously had been opened and the CD was missing. I paid for an empty box. Now, they are telling me I must return the game, either by mail or by going to an EBGames store to get a refund or replacement Has anyone else had any bad experiences with EBgames.com? BTW, all the games in my order had light to moderate damage to the boxes. The one that had the missing CD was heavily damaged. I've ordered numerous times from Amazon and Gamestop, and their products always arive in mint condition (as they should). I'm about to stop buying from EBGames.

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Entire backlog of games gone...out the window!

Well, I certainly can sympathize - I have a large PC game collection, which I keep in the basement. Over Christmas, while I was out of town, a water pipe broke, and doused about 150 of my PC games. Not a total loss I suppose, since the CD's still seem to work after a good drying, but the manuals and any other documentation such as quick reference cards were pretty much ruined. I still get a sick feeling when I think about it.

It has been my experience that in-store prices are not always the same as the online prices. The prices I mentioned are online-I don't know if they are available in-store. EBgames.com does offer cheap shipping if you don't mind waiting a little longer for $1.99 per order.

Well Rob,
I looked again tonight because you mentioned Deus Ex: IW, which was listed at $4.99 just 2 nights ago. It seems that they have changed the prices again, some lower, some higher. Perimeter dropped another $5 to $4.99 for instance. I'm not sure what is going on. Deus Ex obviously was increased. I guess it is a day to day right now.

EBgames has dropped the price on a boatload of PC games. Examples are Chrome and Perimeter for $9.99 each. Many $5 games and some even less than $5. Looks like they are trying to clear them out before the year's end.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / real simple: How do I play Half-life 2 w/o steam???
|
on: November 24, 2004, 04:23:58 AM
|
If I wasn't getting the game free with my video card purchase, I don't think I would buy it, just because of the screwy activation thing. I want my paid for games to work out of the box. If that means a few copies may get pirated, so be it. Don't punish the honest user for the sins of a few. Anyone else feel this way? You wouldn't buy it? Meaning you would NEVER play it? Because if you play it and you didn't buy it you are a pirate. All that because of a little bit of a problem that Valve fixed already? That makes games expensive and screws developers in the ass. STEAM may be buggy but it is good for the industry and c'mon guys... nothing is perfect. Anyone complaining is a potential pirate and condones piracy or just really likes to bitch. If all of you guys complaining about steam think you could do a better job then do it! All you need is a computer and a compiler (free). I'm confident that the guys making this stuff have a pretty good idea about what their doing and has everyone's best interest in mind including them trying to earn their well earned cash. Give 'em a break, buy the game and enjoy! Its one of the best games ever. I don't mean to harp on anyone specifically but C'mon. Half Life 2 is well worth even a day of patience. Anyone up for a game of Counter Strike: Source? Look for =OTCH=J ack Burton in steam (when they get the friends stuff working) You totally took my message wrong. No, I don't advocate piracy, I buy all my games, and I think piracy is totally wrong. I'll play the game because I'm getting it as part of a video card special offer, so I have paid for the game, albeit indirectly. I'm sure the game is great, and Valve should be paid for their work. I just don't like buying a game I can't use right out of the box. I think that penalizes honest users such as myself. If you are willing to put up with it fine. I'm not. This is not an attack on you personally, so please don't take it as such. I was just wondering if anyone else felt as I do.

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / What dollar value do you put on an hour of entertainment?
|

For extremely high. entertainment value, for instance, the Lord of the Rings trilogy, I probably would have paid $30 per movie. Fortunately, i didn't have to pay that much, but I would have. I am willing to pay $50 for a ticket to see my OSU Cowboys play football, which works out to around $15 per hour. I have to say that would probably be my upper limit, although I might spring for the $90 to $100 it would cost to see one of the Circque de Soleil (sp?)shows someday.
