1  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Rumor Mill - Diablo 3 on: December 18, 2004, 10:28:37 AM
FWIW, my experience of Diablo 2 wasn't the fierce addiction I get with certain games (Rome Total War and Avernum 2, to name a couple), but more a sense of "eh, may as well keep playing."  As long as I'm clicking away, I may as well click some more.  Blizzard obviously did a good job of refining that whole skinner-box-pigeon-pushes-button-gets-goodie gameplay style, and I don't mean to say that condescendingly -- game design is all about creating these psychological hooks I think...

I didn't finish D2, just because, having turned it off one day, I couldn't be bothered to boot it up again.  But it was fun while it lasted.
2  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PC Gaming version: Shut up! It IS time to reveal your GOTY on: December 18, 2004, 05:45:59 AM
Rome Total War, easily.  HL2 a somewhat distant runner up.

Sadly, not a great year for single player CRPGs, although I haven't tried Vamps: Bloodlines...

4  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Rome: Total War question on: December 13, 2004, 12:45:25 AM
I'm far from a hardcore strategy guy (though have played my share of Warcraft-style RTS's), hadn't played previous Total War games, but found myself totally drawn into RTW.

There was a bit of a learning curve -- I actually found the city-management/financial stuff to be tougher to figure out than most of the tactical-combat stuff.

But IMO it's absolutely worth it.
5  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / What song puts a stupid grin on your face? on: December 12, 2004, 04:30:41 AM
I don't know if any song literally puts a goofy grin on my face, but it's pretty hard for me to listen to "I Should Have Known Better" without hollering along in my best John Lennon impression (which isn't very good).

And when I tell you that I love you...
Oh.....
You're gonna say you love me too-ooo-ooo-oo-oo-oo-oooo
And when I ask you to be mi
ah ah

You're gonna say you love me too-oo....
6  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Best Game of All Time: und zer vinner ist . . . on: December 10, 2004, 10:49:43 PM
Well I am pleasantly surprised that BG2 won.  Both finalists were fine games, however.

BTW, Ebbie baby, to say that "all of the Ultimas" (up to 7) are better than BG2 is absurd, and I say that as a die hard Ultima fan.

Try playing Ultima 2 and get back to me...

In absolute terms, BG2 is probably the best single player CRPG yet made, although I would suggest that Gothic 2, Fallout 1, and Avernum 2 are in the running as well.

Rob, I just want to say thanks for putting HL2 in the disappointments column and Doom 3 in the favorites.  Sure, HL2 was a neat game, but compared the what I hoped it would be, it did not live up.  Doom 3 on the other hand, was way more than I hoped for.  Bravo sir!

I don't much like this idea of calibrating a game to our expectations of it, though.  I mean, does that make a game better if you think it's gonna be shite and it turns out to be only average instead?

10  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / My 2004 pc gaming year in review on: December 10, 2004, 07:03:24 PM
I didn't play 10 new games this year but I guess my favorites would be...

1) Rome Total War
2) Half Life 2 and Thief 3 (tie)
3) everything else

Didn't play any disappointing games this year.  Didn't buy any disappointing games this year.

FWIW, HL2 is highly linear but so was HL1, so I don't think this should come as a surprise to anyone.  Though one could argue that shooter design has moved on in the last 6 years, yada yada.  I thought it was fine though, neither "best thing since sliced bread" nor "a crushing disappointment."  I give it 8/10.

1200 BC - The Trojan War

So they are moving "upward" in time, but still ancient era.  How many of these do they intend to do?

13  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / "The wait is almost over" on: December 09, 2004, 10:12:54 PM
There seems to be some controversy over whether the quote means it will be an AoE remake set in ancient times -- or if new quotes will be added taking us up through history to the new era (presumably post-medieval).

I'd kind of like to see them go back to an ancient setting, personally.

Actually it looks like all of their Sportsmen of the Year since 1968 have been Americans (as far as I can tell anyway).  Maybe it's a rule or something.

Of course, God forbid they would ever have picked Pete Sampras, who is on the short list for "greatest tennis player of all time"...

16  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / How have CG's forums changed since the flood of GG refugees? on: December 08, 2004, 08:59:38 PM
I think the CG/OO split is a bit of a shame as neither board seems quite as "dense" as Gonegold was, with as many new messages posted regularly.  I have to keep switching back and forth.

It's also sort of weird to see the same thread topics appearing on CG and OO and occasionally on Quartertothree as well.

No one seems to be noticing, but one of the greatest years in the history of pro tennis has just been had by Roger Federer, who might turn out to be the best talent the sport has ever seen...

It's sort of interesting that it's an effective advertising technique to highlight something that has nothing to do with the product you are trying to sell.

The message of that ad is only marginally "our burgers are tasty."  Mainly it is, "wouldn't you like to have sex with this hot bimbo?"  As far as I am aware, the purchasing of a Hardee's burger doesn't allow you to have sex with a hot bimbo, and sufficient consumption of said burgers may in fact decrease your chances of having sex with a hot bimbo.

I guess it works, I suppose there is market research and such to back it all up.  Funny how our mammalian brains function...

Yup. HK-47 tied Murrey the demon skull as the greatest video game character ever in my book. Man, I hope he's back in The Sith Lords because that would just rule all. biggrin

Murrey, HK-47 and Jan Jannsen from Baldur's Gate II would have to top my list.

HK is very good, though I am fond of Ignus from PS Torment as well...

Why is it the psychotic characters that are the most endearing?

26  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ok so how do I play HL2 if the comp has no internet? on: December 03, 2004, 08:24:03 PM
And the internet-only deal doesn't bug me so much as the idea that I am dependent on some distant server for whether or not I can install the damn game.  It should become absolute standard procedure, if this net-registration thing becomes common, to release patches as soon as a company folds or ceases to support a given game.  These patches should allow owners of the game to skip internet registration if, in the future, the game's company has gone under.  I don't know about others but I like to reinstall games that are 5+ years old, and a lot can happen in five years.

I suppose the warez community will come up with such patches anyway, but it would be nice if we didn't have to seek out the help of pirates in order to deal with software companies' measures to prevent piracy.

28  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Book/Movie Recommendations on: December 03, 2004, 05:55:46 PM
There's an interesting story about Outbreak... there was an actual Hot Zone movie in development, but Outbreak basically "scooped" it by being rushed into production first.

That was back in the 90s when Outbreak's producer, Arnold Kopelson, was still at the top of his game.  His company (where I interned for a bit) has declined in recent years.
29  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Half-Life 2 Deathmatch just released via steam on: December 02, 2004, 10:24:52 PM
I do find myself missing the UT-style embellishments -- like a larger message telling you that you just fragged someone; "first blood" and "killing spree" type announcements, etc.  I guess it would be less appropriate to the subdued HL2 world but it did feel a little dry to me.
30  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Rome TW only one gripe on: December 02, 2004, 09:50:06 PM
Actually Elvis you can play on past the victory screen.  Even when the little victory movie is playing, you can ESC and save the game.  Then when you reload you will have the victory conditions completed but will be able to play on.

My main beef with RTW is the often subpar AI.  For instance, the AI will do ridiculous things like parade  soldiers around in the range of arrow-fire when you sally out to attack the besieging army.  All they have to do is stay out of range and wait for you to make the first move.

Still, it's easily my GOTY and in fact the best game I have played in several years.

34  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What's your GOAT of the Year so far? (PC edition) on: December 01, 2004, 04:55:14 PM
No, I'd say it's more significant than box art.  In the opinion of a lot of people, mandatory online registration for single player games sets a pretty crappy precedent.  And to those who had technical hurdles with Steam the first few days, well, "launch issues" affected people's estimation of games like WW2 Online, Anarchy Online, and so forth.  Now "launch issues" can affect SP games too.  Whee!
35  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What's your GOAT of the Year so far? (PC edition) on: November 30, 2004, 09:02:15 PM
I haven't played any bad games from 2004 but only bought maybe 4-5 new games this year.  RTW, Half Life 2, Thief 3, UT2k4 -- all winners.

If older games count, well I bought Pirates of the Caribbean for $5 and it seems pretty dubious, but that was a strictly casual purchase, mainly to see the pretty water effects.
36  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HL2 - sound stutter problem officially recognized on: November 30, 2004, 04:56:40 PM
Can anyone give a primer on this AGP aperture stuff?  I know you set it in BIOS, but is there a standard?  Is the default usually the same as the card's memory?  Can the aperture size be larger than the card's memory?  Is there an obvious downside to increasing/decreasing it?

Just not really sure of the context for futzing around with this...

Right: BG2

4 sides, two good, two evil.  Rohan, Gondor, Mordor, and Isengard.  At least that's all that was available in skirmish.

I think Treebeard is a hero unit, may be the only Ent.  Not sure though.  I assume Rohan gets him but he might be one of those heroes that are only available in the SP campaign.  Like Frodo and a few others.

Some heroes like Gollum, Witch King, Gandalf and Saruman are available in skirmish mode.

My coworker is just like you.  He goes on about it a lot.  Shut up please.

As for me, I'll be picking up the super mega extended version with the model of Zion...er... the Death Star...um...Hogwart's...

  Crap.

That castle in the mountain that Aragorn seems completely indifferent to even though he's the king or something.

PS  I just revealed spoilers if you're not from Earth and are reading this from space and this is your first look at Earth culture.  I salute/pity you!

Fine, I will shut up, be that way.

Didn't like the movies that much anyway, I am far from a LOTR fanboy -- but it did become a bit of a holiday ritual for me.  Stood out all the more as I hardly ever go to the movies anymore.

Yeah I guess my scale is more along the lines of school grades... anything below 60 isn't good.  80 is still very good, though.  Not "average" by any stretch.  I consider Half Life 2 an excellent game, just not GOTY-worthy.
