2  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Hockey advice, please on: July 29, 2012, 11:56:27 PM
First up, I'm old.

I used to love playing the old Genesis and SNES hockey games. NHL 94 is probably on my personal top ten of all time. It's been a while, though. I'd like to pick up a new hockey game, but there are so damn many. And from the demos, some seem very complex for no reason other than complexity.

Can anyone recommend a good, arcadey NHL game from the recent crop? I'd prefer 360, but have no prejudice against older titles. If you tell me that NHL 07 is the spiritual successor to NHL 95, then I'm sold. Anyway, simple controls, easy scoring and hard checks. I'll abuse sliders if I have to. Just looking to have some fun offline.

Thanks in advance.

I have a copy sitting around, what do you have to trade? Here is a list of stuff I'm interested in, all 360: Enslaved, The Saboteur, Transformers WFC, Mini Ninjas, Wet, Banjo Nuts and Bolts, Simpsons, AvP, Conan

You interested in trading Conviction for a gently used copy of Conan?

I've got Enslaved.  Do you have a copy of Dante's Inferno or any superhero games?

I heard a rumor that one franchise was bringing back the old Genesis-style controls as an option for geezer gamers like me.  Anyone know which franchise this is, and whether it recaptures the long lost magic of childhood?

Hello all,

I've got a 360 copy of Borderlands plus the first disc of DLC (General Knox and Mad Moxie).  Only played the main game once, never unwrapped the DLC disc.  I'm really just more of a single player guy.  At any rate, if you're looking for a good time with friends, I'd love to trade this for:

Castlevania: Lords of Shadow
NBA 2K11

Kirby's Epic Yarn

Or make me a paypal offer.  Thanks for reading!

I'm thinking of buying a new hard drive but I have no idea what kind of blood, sweat and/or tears are involved with getting your profile and data off of one drive and onto another.  Has anyone survived the event and care to share?

The only DMC game I've finished, DMC3 was great.

I've been rethinking my decision of, I put a TON of time into Unreal Tournament 2004 (even wrote a strategy guide for it!), and I look back on those days fondly.

I do assume we're all talking about the Special Edition here, right?  I mean, I loved the first release to death, but spent probably three times as many hours on it once they fixed it and added Vergil.

Oddly, this game also has the distinction of being the most bought game of the decade for me, as I think due to my own poor self control and my wife's generosity I actually ended up with two full price retail copies of each release.

Here in the UK, Amazon and Play have been doing that for years.  In fact Game have had some exclusives too, but really, who in their right mind would buy from Game? slywink

Any of that stuff ever trickle down into the mass market?  Or do codes leak onto the internet?  I'm just hoping there's some kind of balance to keep publishers from finding ways to charge 3 or four times for a complete game.

Hi guys,

I just found out that there's going to be exclusive content for the Wolverine game that coming out soon available only to those people who pre-order at Gamestop.  Outrage!  I mean, it's not like superhero games have a "buy blind" track record.  Anyway, I wondered if any of you knew anything about this.  And whether you think there will be ways, official and...UNofficial, to obtain content like this in the future.

I have a real bad feeling about where videogame retail is headed.

I wanted a basketball game and this one was on the shelf for $4.  I couldn't resist.

I got it home and played a quick game and love the mechanics, however it doesn't look like there's the usual option to make created players.  I see I can do that if I want to play the 24/7 mode, but what if I just wanted to do my normal thing where I make a group of players and forcibly replace the Knicks.  Is 24/7 the only place you can use these created players?

If someone knows, please respond.  It was only $4, but I still might take it back if I'm stuck with the real, depressing Knicks.

The person loved...LOVED Dragon Quest VIII, and has a long history of loving the older Final Fantasy games.  She's been falling out of games ever since it became en vogue to have real time combat systems, and I'm hoping to reel her back in with something newer that has old school flair.  Wii, PS2, 360 are all in play here.

20  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Rogue Galaxy question on: December 12, 2008, 04:54:53 PM
Did anyone play this?  And if so, can you tell me if it's turn based or real time?  I'm looking for a gift for a very picky RPG player.

Thank you.

I'm thinking about picking up one of the PS2 Wild Arms games for me and my wife to go through, as we both enjoy a good turn based RPG.  There are so many, though!

Anyone familiar with the series and able to tell me about where a good place to start might be?  Or any good turn based RPGs in general?  We really enjoyed Dragon Quest 8 together.

23  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / NBA Help on: October 03, 2007, 02:50:35 AM
Hi everyone,

It's that time of year when I get a little antsy for the new basketball season.  Sometimes, I hold off the jones by picking up a 2 or 3 year old NBA game, but there are so many new entries in the market from the last time in did this (in 2000) that I'm not sure who's who and who's good anymore.

So if any of you played one, can you recommend a fun, cheap NBA game?  All I ask in features is player creation and that it not be too too sim (never liked the pace of the 2K games).  The last game I enjoyed was Inside Drive 2003 for the Xbox, but these days I'm looking for a reasonable PS2 entry.

Thanks for any help.

Hello, community.

My girlfriend and I finished off Dragon Quest VIII a little while ago, and we had a great time playing it together.  We want to pick up another game now, but it seems every RPG being released these days is an Action RPG, and we'd rather just have turn-based, old-school combat (with menus and the whole nine yards!).

Can anyone recommend any recent games, PS2 preferred but gamecube allowed, that provide good old fashioned fun with new fangled pretty graphics and stuff?  Basically, I added that last part because we'd rather not play through Chrono Trigger again.  Thanks.

Your writing gets better with each review, Ron.  Made me want to buy this one, no kidding.  Great work.

One question for you and the community:  I've only dabbled in the first one at a friend's house and never really got too serious with it.  With time and money being precious commodities, is it something I should do before the sequel?

Hi everyone!  Been a while, and I've missed you.

Back to business: first up, it should be stated that this is a Mac iBook from the generation prior to this most recent one, and it's been lying dormant since last March when it succumbed to what appears to be a faulty logic board.  I'm not sure if someone out there would like it for parts or practice or what, but I'd be willing to listen to any offers for the thing.

Let's start a discussion.  Private messages are fine, or you can write me at [email protected].  Put in the subject line.

I still don't get how people complain about the loss of the job system and then use that same mouth to deride FFX-2.  Apparently calling them dresses offends on some deep cellular level.  Whatever.  I had fun with it.

I do agree that designing it to REQUIRE a walkthrough in order to get their stupid 'good ending' was a questionable move.  Luckily, the obsessive completist in me died with my teenage years, and I was just happy with any old ending I got.

To access the unlocked easy mode, start a new game after seeing the message that you've done so and it should be an option.  Yes you'll lose any progress you've made to that point, but you'll gain a lot of satisfaction watching yourself tear a hole in the levels that frustrated you up to that point.

At least, that's how it worked on the regular edition.

Hi all,

My OXM subscription is about to run out, and I'm thinking of renewing.  However, I wonder if anyone knows what they're planning in terms of the 360.  I don't think I'll be getting one for a while, and if the demo disks and coverage are going to be all 360 from December on, I don't see the point of renewing.  Has anyone heard anything about what to expect?

I'll keep that in mind.  Soul Caliber won't work, though, as I forgot to mention she has an aversion to games with complicated inputs.  Animal Crossing seems as deep as she's willing to learn button commands for.  Too bad it isn't co-op.

Hi all,

I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a good 2 player game for the gamecube or even the GBA, as I've got a girl who's interested in playing games together but doesn't like the solitary nature of most video games.  Any suggestions?

For the record, she loves playing Bust a Move on the PS2, and has been known to throw down in some Heroes of Might and Magic on PC, which due to the turn based nature we're able to play as a strategic team (she controls the mouse; no she doesn't have a sister).

37  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ninja Gaiden on: August 11, 2005, 08:53:31 PM
I beat it.  I loved it.  I beat it again.  Honestly, once you get a little more used to it (read: better at it), you can blow through those repeat sections.  And honestly, beating things up is so much fun that it's not so bad just for the sake of doing it.  I like the adrenaline rush I STILL get knowing that there are real consequences if I screw up.  Makes the time spent feel less like marking hours until something comes on TV.

Oh, and if the biggest complaint someone has is the proportions of some characters in skippable cutscenes, you know it's a good game.  Don't mind the story, too, as it makes no sense and is primarily a pretext for slicing up enemies by the dozens.

I honestly feel like the game does start to lose cohesion after level 9, but now all I do is replay those levels over and over.  If it had only come with them it would have been worth $50 anyway.  Don't give up!

A few days ago I would say Devil May Cry, I just cannot beat that damn spider boss in level three. But then a couple days ago... I did. After about THREE years of owning Devil May Cry (got it close to release), I FINALLY manage to pwn the spider.

There's hope for me yet...

(And NO, I REFUSE to submit to the easy mode.)

Same here.  Intellectually, I know it's weird that I'd rather pass on a game than play it on easy, but every time that message comes up about switching to "Easy Automatic Mode," I just can't bring myself to do it.  If I'm going to wimp out, I might as well go all the way and just have someone *describe* the game to me.

I'd honestly rather admit that Devil May Cry beat me fair and square.

-Autistic Angel

Easy Mode on DMC 1 IS like having someone describe the game to you.  Combos happen automatically (and at random, it seems), enemies die like there's a blackmail threat on them, and overall it's just not satisfying.  Stick it out if you can, though.  Because the first 10 or so levels of that game are just about my favorite gaming experience on the planet.   I'm happy to answer any questions on it.  Yes, it's hard.  But right past the Spider things get a little more reasonable.  Not easier, mind you.  It's just that you now have the skills to pay a few more bills.

Hi all,

I really liked the old Microsoft Inside Drive series.  The franchise mode was quite nice, what with the RPG aspect to player development and the ability to trade 1st and 2nd round draft picks.  I know they've cancelled the series, but do any of the remaining NBA titles offer similar things?  I'm looking for some new hoops.
