The big draw for me would be that everyone on my friends list will be playing it.  Forza2 is a great driving game that is even greater when you race against GT'ers.  Halo3 isn't a game I want to grind through in single player (never played 1 and didn't get too far in 2) but the community of friends makes it tempting to try out anyways.  I can't answer the question on why I finished Gears of War which I suppose is a similar game but Halo's story hasn't grabbed me at all.

No plans to go out and find a copy but if I'm buying a Slushie (Thank you! come again!) and the Kwiki-Mart has some I might get it.  Other than that I'll wait for impressions here and probably pick up the game when I'm out shopping for other things.
1165  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Bioshock technical problems for 360 on: September 20, 2007, 03:34:18 AM
It happened to me after a game update was installed,  this solution was posted in a earlier thread

Llevine says:  (on the cult of rapture forums)

Solution for the XBox360 "game pauses every 10-15 seconds" problem

After playing the game for a long time (on the XBox 360 only), the game begins to "hitch" or "pause" slightly every 10-15 seconds. The problem does not go away if you restore a savegame, start a new game, or reboot the XBox 360.

This seems to be a problem with the hard drive caching system on in the XBox 360 system software, and we are working with Microsoft to identify a solution for this issue. We have confirmed that the hitching goes away if you clear the hard drive cache.

To clear the hard drive cache, you must hold down both the RB and LB gamepad buttons while the game is starting. This must be done IMMEDIATELY after the console is rebooted (or the game is launched from the dashboard) and the buttons must only be released AFTER the red 2K Games logo appears.

So do that and your shuttering/freezing should be solved.

Ouch, I'm a Niner fan and that game was painful to watch.  Nice to see the defense play well against the pass but the Cards had some pretty good running plays against them.  If the Niner's fall a couple of scores behind someone I don't know how they will be able catch up if they give up that much run yardage.  The offense looked really dull, lots of dropped passes including those two potential game winners (oh so very lucky to recover that fumble in the end zone) that should have been caught.  I had bigger dreams for the team than what I saw last night but I see no way they can get past Seattle.  Prove me wrong Alex, prove me wrong.

The cheerleaders were smoking hot though, hope geller had a seat close to field level to spy them out.

I've had the stutter since the patch.  I didn't clear the cache but when I went  from the last area of the game back to Fort Frolic (achievement hunting  icon_biggrin icon_biggrin) I lost the stutter.  I did not know about the patch causing this so I didn't go back to the end zone to see if it had disappeared there as well.

Well...I got it...I have to say initially, that the picture quality is better than Cable (for all channels) and the HD is very nice smile  But I'm not sure its programmed correctly, as I flipped to some of the channel it says I'm not authorized  disgust  I have the highest channel package so I should have everything (except PPV).  And now the receiver is downloading new programming...whatever that maybe after this update.

Some sports packages are not included with any other channel package.  NFL Sunday Ticket is such a package, you have to pay extra for it and as of last year there was an additional fee for HD Sunday ticket.  I bailed on the NFL when the price jumped to $139 for the season and I was working every other Sunday.

Gratz on your new setup and getting the install done, it pays to stand up and get what you want.

I dread the day my HD-Tivo dies and I need a replacement from DirectTV.  I suppose I could get the expanded HD channels but if it means losing the Tivo functionality at the same time I am not going to be happy.  I hope the HR-20's are a decent machine but I've come to rely on the Tivo's abilities to record my stories even when there is a change in air date/time.

Just started this title after finishing BioShock.  Very enjoyable so far but I'm only on the very first movie.  I am having trouble with the first motorcycle scene where I have to hit the action (Y) button to slide under some flying cars.  I just can't seem to time it right and have only once gotten the bike to lay down, of course right after pulling off that stunt I missed the power slide corner and wiped out.  Even with this frustration I'm having a good time.

The only possibility is Heavenly Sword.  No interest in anything else on the list which is good as I have BioShock to finish (pretty close I think) along with Stuntman Ignition and Metroid 3 to start.  I'm also slogging along slowly with Etrian Oddessy.

Games will be in 1080p (well, sort of- very, very few games support it natively but the 360 will upscale games to that res).  However the Xbox will not upscale regular DVDs to 1080p over component.

VGA, however, has no restrictions- even DVDs will be upscaled to 1080p.

Frack, why doesn't my TV see my 360? My PC's LCD monitor had no problem seeing it.

Could be the TV doesn't support 1080p over VGA, mine won't and this makes it hard to get all I want out of the 360.  If I want 1080p in games I need to use component but the 360 won't upscale DVD's with that connection so I'd have to use the VGA connection which then will only go to 720p.  Arrghhh what a hassle and all that goes away with the new HDMI connection.  I have a PS3 that works for me over a HDMI cable and does upscale after a software update, that is getting all my DVD playback work, the 360 only plays the games and the few HD-DVD's that I own.  Of course now my HDMI inputs are both used up, one with the PS3 and the other with my Tivo.

I play at 1080p over component with my Vizio 47" LCD.  My TV will list its resolution whenever it has to change it from its current condition and I do see it pop up to 1080p while playing.

Just for the numbers...the US has 12 Carrier Strike Groups. I believe only 2 are operating in the Persian Gulf....leaving plenty.

There's a lot more to it than that though.  Generally they try for a 50% optempo (although it's been going above that recently).  So at any given time, half of those carriers shouldn't be deployed.  Then there are issues of transit times (it takes a fair amount of time to get to the Gulf from Norfolk and San Diego).  Plus you have to allow carriers time for extended shipyard time.

Barring switching over to the Blue/Gold crew concept that our SSBNs use, it's very challenging to keep most of the fleet at sea for a long period of time.

I concur that there aren't 12 groups floating around, yet if push came to shove...I'd be surprised if they couldn't quickly turn boats out of drydock into operational status fairly quick.

There is some surge capacity (outside of drydock though- there is nothing quick about getting a ship out of drydock) but that's a short term idea designed around dealing with flareups.  I'm not sure China invading Taiwan would qualify as a short-term flareup.

That is also true of the Chinese, they can't just decide to invade Taiwan next week, they would need to gather troops and transports which will be noticed by the U.S. and Taiwan so there will be some advance notice.  Another problem for the Chinese would be re-supply of their troops on the island as the U.S. Navy could destroy the cargo ships they would need to use.

Some things I'd would have liked to see more finish on

Spoiler for Hiden:
Why at the end of book 6 did Dumbledore insist Harry make one last trip to the Dursleys?  I didn't see any big plot points that made this necessary.

Aunt Petunia's role in all this, did the letter she wrote to Hogwarts get her accepted in?  Did she then refuse to go?

A wrap up of the Dursleys in general, what happened to them, where did they go etc.  Also I think it would have been funny if in the epilogue Dudley's kid was also heading to Hogwarts.

1187  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Michael Vick Indicted on: July 18, 2007, 09:39:09 PM
Vick is going to be a pariah to companies like Nike and any others that use his image.  I don't think there is a more rabid ( icon_biggrin) group of people than the animal rights groups.  Not just the people who own pets and can't see how someone could possibly be that cruel but the really vocal types that will show up where ever Vick might be playing.  I'm betting Nike won't want to be leashed to him in the minds of the general public and even if Vick manages to slide on this (and I'm hoping if he is guilty he doesn't) his earning from endorsements must take a huge hit.  I'm thinking the NFL may stay away from this until the  legal system is done with him so they can't be accused of swaying the minds of a jury because he had been suspended prior to the trial.

Since I work from 4pm til midnight it is easy for me to get a bike ride in during the day.  I usually start at about 0930 and ride for 1.5-2 hrs and still have plenty of time to get things done before I go to work.  It is also helpful that there is a fitness trailer at work, it has free weights, rowing machine, treadmills, eliptical machines, stair climbers etc.  that I can use if I go during my lunch time.

My setup

The lack of airflow (looks like it anyway) would be killer to the 360. I hope you open up the cabinet or something once you fire up the 360.

There are slots cut into each shelf and the bottom inside to allow air flow all around the unit and the back of the unit is very open as well.  I have had no problems with heat removal yet.

Quote from: Calvin on July 10, 2007, 12:45:52 PM

What is the TV mounted on Zinfan?
The TV is mounted on the optional mounting system that consists of two poles inserted into the back of the cabinet and a universal mount between them that the TV attaches to.  The poles are hollow so all the connection cables are hidden in them and out of sight.

My setup

I have the 360 and the Wii set up on the lower left (as you are looking at it) along with a component switch box.  Above them is a HD Tivo.  In the lower center is the PS3 while above that is a drawer that holds my center speaker and has lots of storage for games behind it.  On the right is the AVR reciever on the lower shelf (I wanted to put this in the center but it was a bit too tall for heat removal) and the upper shelf is bare at the moment so it could be used for storage as well.  This unit is a BDI Avion 8527

edited to add, the TV is a Vizio 47" 1080p LCD

I figure if my current one dies I replace it with a Costco one and if that one dies before the 65nm boxes hit the shelf then I just get another one to tide me over until Costco has the newer version.  I'm not saying I'd turn in a Costco box that was working for one with a newer chip, I'd only do that if the original one failed.

I mapped the paddles to look left and right, I think it was wheel setting #2.  I know you can also set the x and b buttons to look around if that is the preference, but like you I don't use the manual transmission so the paddles work well (I have seen them "stick" once or twice where I look right and after I  release the paddle the view remains to the right, a quick tap of the paddle resets the view).
1199  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Forza 2 and MS Racing Wheel question on: June 10, 2007, 08:56:18 PM
You aren't missing anything sadly  crybaby  the wheel is missing some important controls for tuning/painting cars and a controller in position 2 won't work either.  What I do is unplug my wheel and wait for the "please reconnect controller" message to appear at which point I turn on the standard controller and it assumes the #1 spot and I can do what I need to do.  When I'm ready to drive again I take out the battery pack from the controller and plug in my wheel.  It won't take as long as my write-up makes it seem but it still is a pain.
