Well I'm about to give up on FO3, I get constant crashes now.  I've tried disabling the quadcore threading since that was identified as causing similar lock ups to mine but it didn't help and I can't stand restarting my computer anymore just to play 30 seconds of this game,  I wish they would fix this problem, I don't think I'm the only one with this issue.  I'll spoiler where I'm locking up just in case

Spoiler for Hiden:
In vault 112 I've entered the simulation section but every time I enter a house the game freezes.  Since this is part of the main plot I don't think I can go any further.

I love my Kindle!  And I cried the day I fired it up and the upper right hand side of the screen was smeared, like some one had put vasiline jelly on it (but not having any kids this was not the case).  A call to Amazon and they overnighted me a new one ,took the old one back (it was about 5 months old) and got my books onto the new kindle.  Very good customer service IMHO.  As far as the screen issue I have no idea what happened, it was in a protective slip cover but it may have been smooshed in my bag?

Depending on the contract it would matter. In a good union contract if you work over 8 hours a day then you get into overtime which is time and a half. While for the majority you don't get into overtime unless you work over 40 hours a week. Which then after that you get into time and a half. I believe the 40 hours a week is a law, this changes state to state but I thought it was pretty universal for overtime.

First let me say that I do work for a union (IBEW 1245) so I have seen contracts for overtime and such not.  There are some workers who get double time for any time over 40 hours and there are lots of "perks" involved with overtime, drive in, missed meals etc.  I was just curious if the UAW had gotten a really sweet overtime deal and not just the vanilla 1.5 times base salary standard.  I guess my original point to cheeba's post would be that I don't think the overtime issue is something that is breaking the big 3 and not the japanese companies.

I work for a union also (IATSE 363) and our overtime is pretty sweet, any work after 12 pm is double time, if we have to work through lunch it's a meal penalty which is time and a half and any time after 8 hours is time and a half. So depending on the situation you can make a lot of money in a small amount of time. I'm sure the UAW tries to shove in as much perks as possible but it depends on the industry and the contracts. But in the end I think it is give and take and I don't think the overtime is killing the auto industry either.

What do you suppose would happen if auto workers were like game developers? You work 80-100 hour weeks during crunchtime and you don't make a penny of overtime, but the bonuses and royalties will make you rich, maybe, if everything goes right and you aren't laid off before they're handed out. And nobody ever retires from a game company. Cars would cost $50 and we'd buy a new one every 3 months because it goes faster and has flashier paint.

You pretty much describe management above.  One thing the unions don't subscribe to is working hours without getting paid for them for the promise of a bonus (that may or may not happen) further down the road, the amount of said bonus up to the whims of your bosses.

That ignores overtime which is a significant chunk of the UAW worker's paycheck.

What would you suggest the automakers do to reduce overtime?  Hiring more workers would be far more cost intensive since you would have to pay them the standard wage and benefits and whatever other costs (training etc.) that might entail.  I don't know what the UAW workers get for overtime but if it is time and a half then I would think that is more cost efficient than growing the size of the work force.  Of course the management could streamline production and reduce overtime that way, I'm sure they've tried that but if what you say is true then they still feel the need to provide more than 40 hrs/week for the workers.

Can you compare the overtime earned between the UAW and the non-union workers?  I'd be curious to see if one works longer hours than the other and if there is a difference in compensation for the overtime.

edit to add:  Over-the-air digital is really pretty amazing.  Since it's a digital signal, the reception is an all or nothing affair--you can't really have snowy channels.  If you get a station, it's crystal clear.

This is what I have.  I get HD over the air and it's all or nothing. So if I get HD over the air that means I'm not going to lose all my channels come Feb and am digital ready or whatever, right?

i left this vaguely specific in case you want to discover it on your own.

Up'ed my vid card speed to 40% and still had the game lock up on me.  No more BSOD's but the screen would just freeze and the radio would still be playing.  This happened 4 times in a 10 minute span and I had the ATI monitor open so I could see my vid card temp once I closed FO3, the card never got above 55 deg C so I'm not sure what my issue is.  My driver version is 8.541.0.0 dated 9/23/08.

The game ran for quite a long time (over 1.5 hrs) without a hiccup after the 4th reboot and I hadn't done any changes to my system to try and fix anything.

Here is a link to a pretty much essential mod IMO:

http://fallout3nexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=43

The mod makes font a bit smaller, as well us changes some of the interface windows (including the dialog window) so that more information is displayed. I've tried it yesterday and it works great.

Huge font size was my main complaint about FO3, having it in the PC version is just laziness on Bethesda's part, especially since IIRC Oblivion had similar issues. With this problem gone, I can enjoy the game even more!

Thanks. Do these mods have any effect on XBL Achievements?

I don't think so.

I couldn't get Firefox to download the file, had to go with I.E. which worked just fine.

More crashes now, getting BSOD's.  I took a picture of the BSOD and the error is in dxgkrnl.sys,  makes me think it may be vid card related.  I have an ATI 4870 1gb card that isn't overclocked in anyway and has the latest driver version.  I'm running the game in 1920x1200 on ultra high settings and it seems very smooth up to the point the game either locks up or crashes.  ATI software keeps the card fan speed pretty low so I'm going to see if upping it manually will help out.

Here is the screen of death I get.  crybaby

So my new computer is running 64 bit Vista and I'm not sure about running User Account Control (UAC).  I was having trouble getting screen shots taken in Fallout 3 and it seems the only way I could save the shots was to start the program as an admin.  This isn't the only program that has run afoul of UAC and there doesn't seem to be any helpful dialog boxes telling you what the blockage is.  UAC also won't let me pick programs to allow all the time, for example my DVD drive loads a program on startup that UAC questions each time, I'd like to at least allow that program access but my only options seem to be UAC on or UAC off.  From what I've read turning UAC off is a bad idea virus wise.  Anybody have hints/tricks to make UAC more functional?

That was a fantastic race (finally, it seems most F1 races are on the whole boring).  When Vettel passed Hamilton I couldn't believe it.  I'm with Tals on Lewis as well, something about his racing style/manner bothers me and I was hoping for a Massa win if only to see the local crowd go beserk (more so than the were already).  So sad to see Glock run down with less than 1/4 of a lap to go, high drama in Brazil.  I wouldn't want Alonso on my team, his actions at Mclaren last year were bush league.  Vettel is going to get a Ferrari ride one day soon I'd guess.  I wonder if he will try to stay at Toro Rosso instead of moving onto the Red Bull "senior" team, they have that car running so well now and it was a joke at the start of the season.

Yeah, check all drivers, including -sound- and even chipset/motherboard if you can find an update.  Also close down anything extraneous you have running other than the game.  Finally, if you've got ffdshow installed, that seems to cause a ton of problems for the game.

I turned off the sidebar and played for quite awhile with no problems so maybe that was it.  I have a fairly new computer and all the drivers have been updated.  I'm not sure what ffdshow is but I'll check out if it was installed.

I think my screenshot issue was Vista related, I started the game as an administrator and I now have some screenies.

And yes Fallout 3 IS an Oblivion mod, check out the picture.  Have you seen this area before?  ninja

The game keeps locking up on me.  The first time was when I got to the Vault exit, the screen just froze and I had to ctrl/alt/del out of the game.  Next time out in the wastelands the same thing happened and finally I tried taking a screenshot using the printscreen key and I got the message the screenshot had been created but the game froze and I lost my mouse pointer as well, I had to ctrl/alt/del again and then tab over to the shutdown button in order to get my computer re-booted.  No idea what is happening, I checked the temperature on my vid card and it was fine and on the first two lockups I could use task manager to close the game and my computer was working fine.  As a further note where are my screenshots saved to?  I tried searching for them and couldn't find them.

I love my Kindle! As for the upgraded model, it will use the same screen as the original so I don't see any real advantage to waiting for the new version, the new one has more base memory I believe but it also does away with the SD card slot.  This reminds me that I need to download the new Nelson DeMille novel that came out yesterday.

That's what you're looking for.  Keep in mind you'll have to resync the controller with the 360 each time if you plan on going back and forth.  Otherwise, it works pretty well.
