Just for the numbers...the US has 12 Carrier Strike Groups. I believe only 2 are operating in the Persian Gulf....leaving plenty.

There's a lot more to it than that though.  Generally they try for a 50% optempo (although it's been going above that recently).  So at any given time, half of those carriers shouldn't be deployed.  Then there are issues of transit times (it takes a fair amount of time to get to the Gulf from Norfolk and San Diego).  Plus you have to allow carriers time for extended shipyard time.

Barring switching over to the Blue/Gold crew concept that our SSBNs use, it's very challenging to keep most of the fleet at sea for a long period of time.

I concur that there aren't 12 groups floating around, yet if push came to shove...I'd be surprised if they couldn't quickly turn boats out of drydock into operational status fairly quick.

There is some surge capacity (outside of drydock though- there is nothing quick about getting a ship out of drydock) but that's a short term idea designed around dealing with flareups.  I'm not sure China invading Taiwan would qualify as a short-term flareup.

That is also true of the Chinese, they can't just decide to invade Taiwan next week, they would need to gather troops and transports which will be noticed by the U.S. and Taiwan so there will be some advance notice.  Another problem for the Chinese would be re-supply of their troops on the island as the U.S. Navy could destroy the cargo ships they would need to use.

Some things I'd would have liked to see more finish on

Spoiler for Hiden:
Why at the end of book 6 did Dumbledore insist Harry make one last trip to the Dursleys?  I didn't see any big plot points that made this necessary.

Aunt Petunia's role in all this, did the letter she wrote to Hogwarts get her accepted in?  Did she then refuse to go?

A wrap up of the Dursleys in general, what happened to them, where did they go etc.  Also I think it would have been funny if in the epilogue Dudley's kid was also heading to Hogwarts.

1164  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Michael Vick Indicted on: July 18, 2007, 09:39:09 PM
Vick is going to be a pariah to companies like Nike and any others that use his image.  I don't think there is a more rabid ( icon_biggrin) group of people than the animal rights groups.  Not just the people who own pets and can't see how someone could possibly be that cruel but the really vocal types that will show up where ever Vick might be playing.  I'm betting Nike won't want to be leashed to him in the minds of the general public and even if Vick manages to slide on this (and I'm hoping if he is guilty he doesn't) his earning from endorsements must take a huge hit.  I'm thinking the NFL may stay away from this until the  legal system is done with him so they can't be accused of swaying the minds of a jury because he had been suspended prior to the trial.
1165  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Balancing work and exercise on: July 17, 2007, 03:56:41 AM
Since I work from 4pm til midnight it is easy for me to get a bike ride in during the day.  I usually start at about 0930 and ride for 1.5-2 hrs and still have plenty of time to get things done before I go to work.  It is also helpful that there is a fitness trailer at work, it has free weights, rowing machine, treadmills, eliptical machines, stair climbers etc.  that I can use if I go during my lunch time.

My setup

The lack of airflow (looks like it anyway) would be killer to the 360. I hope you open up the cabinet or something once you fire up the 360.

There are slots cut into each shelf and the bottom inside to allow air flow all around the unit and the back of the unit is very open as well.  I have had no problems with heat removal yet.

Quote from: Calvin on July 10, 2007, 12:45:52 PM

What is the TV mounted on Zinfan?
The TV is mounted on the optional mounting system that consists of two poles inserted into the back of the cabinet and a universal mount between them that the TV attaches to.  The poles are hollow so all the connection cables are hidden in them and out of sight.

Quote from: Jag on July 10, 2007, 02:33:16 PM

Correct, that is the mounting hardware for the TV.

My setup

I have the 360 and the Wii set up on the lower left (as you are looking at it) along with a component switch box.  Above them is a HD Tivo.  In the lower center is the PS3 while above that is a drawer that holds my center speaker and has lots of storage for games behind it.  On the right is the AVR reciever on the lower shelf (I wanted to put this in the center but it was a bit too tall for heat removal) and the upper shelf is bare at the moment so it could be used for storage as well.  This unit is a BDI Avion 8527

edited to add, the TV is a Vizio 47" 1080p LCD

It doesn't seem like date of manufacture means that much unless you're buying an Elite.  I hope my box holds up until the 65nm switch.

I figure if my current one dies I replace it with a Costco one and if that one dies before the 65nm boxes hit the shelf then I just get another one to tide me over until Costco has the newer version.  I'm not saying I'd turn in a Costco box that was working for one with a newer chip, I'd only do that if the original one failed.

Sorry to hear about your ring problems.  I plan to do the same thing when (not if) mine dies.  I'll use Costco to buy another so I don't have to deal with MS on the issue.
1175  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Forza 2 and MS Racing Wheel question on: June 11, 2007, 10:00:57 PM
I mapped the paddles to look left and right, I think it was wheel setting #2.  I know you can also set the x and b buttons to look around if that is the preference, but like you I don't use the manual transmission so the paddles work well (I have seen them "stick" once or twice where I look right and after I  release the paddle the view remains to the right, a quick tap of the paddle resets the view).
1176  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Forza 2 and MS Racing Wheel question on: June 10, 2007, 08:56:18 PM
You aren't missing anything sadly  crybaby  the wheel is missing some important controls for tuning/painting cars and a controller in position 2 won't work either.  What I do is unplug my wheel and wait for the "please reconnect controller" message to appear at which point I turn on the standard controller and it assumes the #1 spot and I can do what I need to do.  When I'm ready to drive again I take out the battery pack from the controller and plug in my wheel.  It won't take as long as my write-up makes it seem but it still is a pain.

Zin...you let me know what we need to do so I can get an OOTS car from you. smile

Same, I would love a Thog car with him in his leprechaun outfit!

Presuming he didnt do anything silly, i fyou just want a basic copy of his design, he just needs to load the saved peices and stamp it on new cars-so he could easily do that if he so chooses with cars he buys or that you gift him and he gifts back.

Yep they are all saved as stamps (called vinyl groups in the game) so I can put the ones I have on any car.  Right now all I have is Belkar and the Ninja with Haley in the works.  Thog sounds fun, I'll look at his design and see what I can do.  I think the hidden monster with the hello kitty umbrella might be an easy one as well.  I will try to get some more time in later today and see how far I get.  I think all I need on Haley is one of her arms, the rest is done but I'm having a tricky time getting the curve I want on that last one.

Great storry Zinfan/Otter. Good race/communication we had yesterday too on that one track until I was a cock and hit the wall. Touch and go.

Yep both of us in Wing Tips on the nurgenschalagerdopplegangeronering (sp?) was looking good, you had just a touch more top speed which would help on much of the track but mine seemed to have a bit better handling for the rest of it.  I also managed to cock it up, hit the wall on the second lap and barely make it to the finish on time.  I hope we get another chance to run that race.

Fun race last night with Lockdown on the short twisty Tsukba (?) track

Here on the final lap entering the last corner and Lockdown has a tidy lead on the hapless elise of Zinfan.

Wait a second!  It looks like LD has overcooked it a bit and is running a touch wide, is it enough of a gap for Zin?

Oh slam the pedal to the metal now Zin, LD has lost momentum but the finish line is just ahead! Time is running out!!

And it's a photo finish, Check you timing sheets everyone.  The margin between the two cars is .05 sec!!!

Man that one was a hoot, I think LD and I traded positions 5-6 times during the race and there was either KePoW or USMC Kato (sorry guys I forgot who was who in this race) in there as well.

I got in a group of good guys last night and we had lots of fun trying to race the exact same cars.  We picked an R3 car and ran 5 laps on the Nissan speedway, wow talk about white knuckles!  Until someone makes a mistake all the cars are right on top of each other and trying to draft as close a possible. I really liked that aspect of it.

My Elise is doing well in the C class now that I have some more time in it, I managed to finish 3rd in at the Nurburgring track but that was due to my hanging back a bit at the start and letting the resulting first corner crash clear the track a bit  icon_biggrin.    Hope to get more racing in with the GT/OO clan soon.

You can set up the paddles on the wheel to look left and right and since I use automatic transmission all the time that's what I did.  It is IMHO the biggest weakness of the wheel that it doesn't have all the buttons of the controller so some things get left out.  Oh and trying to drive a Ferrari 330 without traction control on is shall we say challenging  nod

Since I don't have a desk nearby to attach it to I got my ironing board out and pressed ( biggrin ) it into service as a stand.  Worked out really well since I could adjust the height to my prefered location and it can be stored away quickly once I'm done racing.  I did have to put a thin book between the clamp and the bottom of the ironing board because the tightening screw on the clamp couldn't get enough grip on the thin surface of the board.

BRILLIANT!

I'm actually considering a wheel now because of this.  The ironing board is in the TV room.  Frequently right next to the couch.  If storage of the wheel weren't a big PIA...of course, I could move the damned Steel Battalion controller from our trunk/coffee table to the basement.  Hmm.  This requires some thought.

How do the pedals fit under the ironing board?

They fit with no interference at all, I just put them between the legs of the board.  It really works well as a table for your wheel, I don't see myself getting anything else to use as a mounting device.

I do wish the power cord was a couple of feet longer since my electrical sockets are just barely within reach.

I posted the following on OO earlier today so I just cut and pasted it below.  One thing about setting up the wheel, the instructions tell you to insert the included disc first for driver updates to support the wheel but my disc just started PGR3(also included in the package) and I never saw an update.  Turns out an earlier system update to the console had already added support for the wheel and all I needed to do was power on the console and the wheel and then press the connect button on each, it worked fine after that. So here is my ramblings about the wheel;

My troubles getting my wheel connected were self-inflicted.  After I tried once again last night I noticed the ring of lights in the middle of the wheel weren't spinning like the ones on the console so I held down the connect button a bit longer.  This did the trick as the wheel started searching for the console and found it right away. .  Ahh it works now.

I like the wheel quite a bit and just as knob says while I may be faster with the controller, I'm having more fun with the wheel.  I've turned all assists off except for the braking line and automatic transmission resulting in some pretty lurid slides while trying to drive my 1961 Jaguar E-type around but with a little patience and planning I can get some good laps in.  I am going to keep using the wheel and see how the faster cars handle with it, so far I'm still using D class autos (VW GTI mk5, the Jag and a Miata) and control is on the knife edge with a minor slip-up really setting me back on track.  I can really feel the difference between the Jag and VW (RWD vs FWD) on track and I'm always trying to keep the Jag's rear end behind the front as they want to swap ends all the time.

The force feedback is really good but my wheel has a click sometimes during a race, it doesn't affect the performance of the wheel but is noticable.  I played a bit of PGR3 as well as DiRT  using the wheel and found that the FF effects in PGR3 are too muted compared to Forza while DiRT's FF was stout but perhaps too stout with the wheel jerking hard side to side as might be expected when racing on dirt but this seemed off in some undefineable way.  I'll try it some more this weekend.  Using my lap to hold the wheel didn't work out very well, it seems comfortable there before the race starts but the FF can really move it around and I found it distracting.

I'm pretty Meh about my PS3, the lack of games is hurting it from my standpoint.  I've been playing GH3 and Catan on my 360 so the PS3 is just sitting there not getting much action.  I do like the blu-ray player and hope some day that standard DVD scaling will be added in one of their updates.  I'm not sorry I bought it, just wish there were more games out there for it.  As far as cross-platform titles I think I'd probably go 360 for the rumble capability of its controller and the achievement points.  I have not yet seen a review that points to the PS3 version of a game as being graphically better than the 360 but I can see that being due to the more recent release of the PS3 and hence less development time on it.
