Still holding out for the PC version but I need to stay away from the stores to prevent an "accidental" purchase of the 360 version since I'm actually off work this weekend.
1042  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (10/13) on: October 13, 2008, 07:38:58 PM
Saints Row 2 for the PC this week.  Dead Space for the PC is next week so I'll have a chance to see what the PS3/360 crowd think of it before I buy.

I get the loss of signal, searching for signal on channel 2 message every once in awhile even if the weather has been good.  I assume if you have called DirecTV they have had you reset your receiver?  If I do that with mine it always manages to pick the signal back up again.

One thing I'd liked to have seen is the marlin in Big Mikes office taped up after it was broken last season, instead it looks like he has a new fish on the wall.  Would have been a great shout back to an earlier episode.

Tough choice for me having just built a nice computer (where the hell is my monitor Dell?!?!  finger).  I like playing in the living room on the 47" TV but the computer should be able to push the graphics up a notch (Bam!) so for the moment I'm leaning towards the PC version.
1046  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Operation Overkill begins on: October 06, 2008, 09:34:05 PM
It's (half)Alive!!  Still waiting on Dell to ship my monitor and they still show it shipping on the 8th of October which I find hard to believe since I ordered it on Sept 30th and all they have to do is slap a shipping label on the box.  Thanks for the prompt service Dell!  finger.

Anyway I hooked up the wife's monitor to it and fired it up.  The system is much quieter than I thought it would be even with 4 case fans running, I guess since the fans are large and run at less rpm's than some others.  The only difficulty I had was getting my Belkin network card to work since it didn't ship with Vista capable drivers.  Once I figured out the problem and downloaded the drivers (thankfully I had the laptop to connect to the net with) I still had to struggle to get the card recoginized.  In the end I managed to uninstall the drivers from the original install disc (the non-Vista ones) and then get the new driver installed and finally the NIC worked.  That pretty much wrapped up the use of "Overkill" for the night as the boss wanted her monitor back.  Looks good so far though.

the WD 6400AAKS (Caviar SE 16 640) is nearly as fast as the Velociraptor, with twice the storage and a third of the cost.  It's worth a look.

It seems I've spent too much time on monitor and vid card research and not enough looking at hard drives.  Ah well I don't want to drive the 2 hours to return the velociraptor and get that drive but it sure looks like something I would have bought if I'd done better research.
1049  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Operation Overkill begins on: September 30, 2008, 08:36:01 AM
"The die is cast" and we have crossed teh Rubicon.  I ordered up a Sapphire Radeon 4870 HD vid card with 1GB memory from newegg and the monitor has been decided upon.  I'm going to get a Dell 2709WFP 27" LCD.  I was just about to pull the trigger on the Samsung 275T Plus for $880ish when I decided to check out the Dell web page and they had this one for $200 off bringing the price down to $699 with free 3-5 day shipping.  After reading a few reviews including this 15 page one  I decided I had waffled and hemed and hawed and twiddled long enough and the credit card was pulled out for a final meltdown.

Since this computer is going to be used for watching movies and maybe hooking up the PS3 and 360, I felt I needed the larger screen space over say a 24" monitor.  I can't wait to see this whole thing in action, I've got most of the cables run and the case is really nice for tucking things out of the way.

Oh I forgot to look at that SSD Vidiot, I'm not sure I'm willing to be that cutting edge at the moment.

You're building a kick ass system with a single 300gb hard drive? Get a 100 gig raptor for your os and a 1tb drive for everything else.

Excellent point.  I was thinking about this and perhaps I'll get a 74GB raptor for the OS and then maybe another 300 GB to go RAID 0 with the current one.

A G15 keyboard.  Sound card and speakers unless you are going with onboard sound.

For now I'm going to use the onboard sound since I'm going to be using wireless headphones most of the time, I'll check out that keyboard.

I'm starting to waffle on the vid card though, it is very expensive and I can get almost the same performance using two 4870's in crossfire mode.  If I buy one 4870 now ($270ish vice $550 for the X2) and add another one on later, I'll also have backup if one of the cards should fail.  One of the reasons I got the 620W PSU was the power draw of the X2 card so it will be real overkill to only have one card drawing off the supply.

Ahh a quick check of Newegg reminds me of why I was looking at the X2, it has 2GB of video memory while the single 4870's had 512MB each, I wanted the larger memory for my card. I see the 1GB 4870's are available for around $300 so I'd be willing to have two of those eventually for an additional $50 vice the single X2 card, my new case is huge and the motherboard supports Crossfire so I'm sure that is the route I'll take now.

Still up in the air for a monitor though, all the stores close to me only stock the lower-mid range LCD's ($200-$450) while I'm looking for one in the $600-800 range.  This makes it impossible to check the monitors in person so I'm having to go by online reviews (anandtech, extremetech, Toms Hardware, etc...).  I'm  thinking since I plan on using this to view DVD's as well as gaming and various other tasks I'd be better off with a non-TN type screen since the TN suffers from color shifts if you aren't looking directly at the screen.  I know the other screen types suffer from input lag but I'm probably the largest source of lag in the first place so I'm willing to give that up for a better overall viewing experience.

After my wife's computer crashed and she took over my desktop I've been researching a new computer for myself.  Well today I started buying the parts, I think it should be fast but I know it will be pricey.

Things I picked up today

CPU- Intel Q9550
Motherboard- Asus P5Q Deluxe
RAM- Corsair XMS2 DDR2 4GB in two modules
PSU- Corsair HX620W modular
DVD  Drive- LG GGC-H20L Blu-ray/HD player, DVD reader/burner
Hard Drive- Western Digital VelociRaptor 300GB SATA drive
O/S- Windows Vista Home Premium SP-1 64bit
Network card- Belkin N1 Wireless
Case- CoolerMaster HAF932 tower
Mouse- Logitech G5

Still to come

Video Card-  Most likely an ATI 4870X2
Monitor- Up in the air, I'm looking at a Samsung 245T or a Dell 2409 or maybe even a Samsung 275T.
A CPU cooler fan which I forgot to get today.
Whatever else I forgot eh?

Man I suck at drums so bad.  Even on easy setting I'm flailing like a fish out of water, more time in the training section for me I guess.  On the other hand while I'm a Medium difficulty player on the guitar I did manage to complete one song on Hard-- "The Kids in America"  (shhhh I was playing bass  icon_razz).  I actually liked the speed of the notes coming at me but need a lot of work before I can even attempt to pass a lead guitar song on hard, should be fun though.  The RB2 guitar is working very well for me and I finally managed to get the video cal to work, I had to hold the guitar at just the right distance (I figure it was about 8" from the screen) to register the flashes.

Oh and I wanted to practice Kids in America but it didn't show up on my playlist in the training section, do I have to finish the venue the song is located in for it to show up?
1059  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Official] Rock Band 2 Impressions on: September 16, 2008, 11:45:03 PM
I never got into the drums while playing RB1 but I hear good things about the new training mode in RB2 so I think I'll try out my original drum set.  I'm betting my foot will feel like its falling off again, just like last time.

I picked up the new guitar today at Gamestop. It looks gorgeous. The strum bar is greatly improved, it doesn't click like the GH3 one but snaps quite nicely up and down. The buttons feel about the same, just a bit more solid maybe. The auto-calibration seems to be pretty spot on and I didn't notice any problems with that. Overall I like it a great deal more than the RB1 and GH3 guitars and am glad I got it.

I logged on to say the same thing, got the last RB2 guitar at the local GameStop for $69.99.  I had no problems with the audio section of the auto cal but I never got the guitar to respond to my Vizio LCD flashing for the video cal.  I just left the cal where it was from my RB1 guitar cal and it seemed to work just fine.  The new guitar is really nice but I keep forgetting that it is wireless!  I'm always putting it down to walk to the fridge or whatever.

My scores have gone up quite a bit with the new guitar but that is probably due to the old one being hit or miss on the up and down strums.
1061  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Official] Rock Band 2 Impressions on: September 15, 2008, 01:09:32 AM
Funny I never thought about playing with the DRUMS!  Sheesh it's been awhile I guess.  Anyways I suck on the drums but maybe with the new calibration scheme I'll get a bit better.  Before  my guitar broke I noticed the new cal settings were making it a bit easier for me.
1062  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Official] Rock Band 2 Impressions on: September 15, 2008, 01:05:02 AM
Dang it!  I was just starting to get back into the Rock Band mode and my guitar up strum borked on me.  I had been using the down strum technique long ago but it seemed my guitar was double strumming in some of the Rock Band 2 menus so I started trying just to up strum and was getting used to it when it all came crashing down (sigh).  So I'm out until I can get a replacement guitar or a new wireless one.

I loved all the Vorkosigan books and the Curse of Chalion is pretty good too.  The only book of hers I didn't like was the Spirit Ring.  I'd recommend searching out the other books in the series as they are all well done.  You could read Shards of Honor and Baryarr (sp??) which focuses on different people in Miles's universe.  Oh and the short story "Mountains of Mourning" is a fantastic read that is enclosed in the book Young Miles I believe.

A review of wikipedia shows you have the first 3 books in the Vorkosigan saga so I'd say listen away and enjoy, I'd be interested in how well the audio book is done.

Things I didn't like;
The mother (how I hate whats her name, always some flaky ditzy space cadet)
The sister with the hidden secret, why bring it to the house of your sister the U.S. Marshal?
The sidekick- too slicked back, wearing all black in New Mexico in the summer?
The car- hey did she get a engine rebuild after the first 10 minutes?  cause it stopped smoking after that.
The HD signal- for some reason the picture was very grainy and didn't look much like HDTV to me even if it was in 16:9

I will Tivo a few more episodes and give it a chance.

I just installed an odometer/speedometer on my bicycle and I have a quick question.  When you're installing the magnet and the sensor, does it matter where on the spoke it goes?  I mean, if I install it took close to the center of the wheel I'm not going to get inaccurate results am I?  Or should it be the same anywhere on the wheel?  (I'm assuming some sort of mathematical equation involving r or pi is involved.)

The only math involved is how many times the magnet passes the sensor, the position on the spoke doesn't matter at all.  The bike computer has the diameter of your wheel inputed into it and from that it can determine how far the bike travels for each revolution of the wheel, and since it can also determine the time between the revolutions it can determine speed.  Yeah I'm sure Pi and r squared are in there somewhere so that's why I use a GPS computer now  icon_biggrin

My wife drives a Fit.  It should be noted that she only ever drives Hondas (and yet when I told her not to mention that to the salesman she ignored me  icon_evil).  We test drove the Civic and Fit the same day and both of us liked the handling of the Fit to the Civic which seemed heavier and more disconnected from the road.  The sticker on the cars show the automatic having a 1 mpg better gas consumption compared to the manual, we got the auto but I don't know if real world driving proves out the sticker or not.  The wife loves the car and it can really handle a lot of stuff inside.  I don't really drive it much (probably have driven it less than 25 miles) but the front passenger seat is comfortable.  This is a standard Fit by the way, not the Sport version but I don't see anything that you get in the Sport that would change the basic handling and performance of the car.

Blimey kathode, a Panther tank!  Let's brew it up with our PIAT.  Hmmm better give the manual a reccy first;
From the 1943 British Army manual Projector, Infantry, Anti-Tank:

'Lie on the back and rest the projector on the chest, with the bomb support pointing over one shoulder and the shoulder piece flat on the ground. Keep the front support clear of the body and arms. Place the insteps on the shoulder piece, one foot on each side of the outer casing. Grasp the trigger guard firmly with one hand from underneath; with the other grasp any part of the projector that will give good leverage. Sit up or bend the knees if necessary, according to cover. Pull the outer casing away from the shoulder piece and turn it anticlockwise as far as it will go. Pulling with the hands and pushing with the feet, continue to pull on the outer casing until a click is heard. Considerable effort is required to overcome the resistance of the mainspring. The click denotes the action is cocked.'

Hey kathode how would you like a promotion to gunner? Hey is that Sarkus over there all alone?  Sarkie fancy a turn with the bomb dispenser?

Uh, not really.  I'm trained on the Bren and since there are four in this outfit that's what I should be on.  Maybe Canuck should join you?  disgust

Blah blah Bren..  blah blah.  The PIAT team is where the Victoria Crosses go!  Nothing to it, just sneak up to within 30 ft(!?!?!) of a tank and let the bombs fly, fame and fortune are sure to follow.
