I thought the Gladys Knight sketch ran too long, but it was cool to see Jack Black, Ben Stiller, and Robert Downey, Jr. on stage together. Then I realized they're all in the new movie Tropic Thunder and that this was just another piece of marketing. Ugh.

I never got that it was a marketing ploy until some one mentioned Tropic Thunder, that did take the shine off the bit for me.  And did Randy use the snow shovel on Captain Kangaroo in order to steal his suit?  That was oh so bad a look.  Paula was heading for a Janet Jackson Super Bowl moment when she was up on the stage swaying around during the "You are my brother" song.  Paula also called it a week or two ago for Cook, man that can't be good for future seasons if she and Simon are trying to out do each other in predictions.

And padding my post count...

Simon looked pretty happy after they announced the results and his apology to Cook just before they announced the winner was a surprise.  I wonder if indeed he played the voters by making them think Cook had no chance.

:edited to add:

While missing a chance to pad my awesome post total I need to add;

The bit with the crazy "I am your brother" singer had me reaching for the remote to fast foward past it but then the USC marching band showed up and since they brought along 4 or 5 of their cheerleaders I stayed to drool  drool  If USC ever changes those sweater dress uniforms to something else then hell has frozen over and life isn't worth living.

Wow, i'm surprised

12 million whacks upside the head, and no shot of daddy  crybaby

There was a quick shot of Archie's family after the announcement and Daddy Dearest was applauding along with the rest of the family, if he was putting on a good face he was doing a good job of it, it seemed genuine.

I had a hunch once they announced early in the show that it was a runaway 56% to 44% vote result that Cookie had won.  With all the support seeming to be going to Archuletta, this early foreshadowing kinda gave me that feeling that Cook would win.

I actually liked the show tonight, it must have been a hoot for Cook to sing with ZZ Top and David Archuletta got New Republic for his band, I'm not familiar with them but it seemed nice enough.  Ok I'm with Pete on Bryan Adams (but hey according to Robin from HIMYM Bruce Springsteen is the American Bryan Adams so that was Legen...wait for it...... DARY having him on smile).

Donna Summers didn't look all that happy to be singing next to the very hot looking Syesha during her pimp song  drool and I thought BrOOke did a good job singing with Graham Nash but at times I couldn't tell if she was trying to look at the audience or reading the teleprompter hoping not to forget the words.  Speaking of forgetting the words, nice work David Hernandaze for his slip up during the final group song.  Carrie Underwood looked great and I bet the view from the mosh pit was something to behold since that suit jacket-dress she had on was so very short, didn't like the song though.  Jordin Sparks looked out of place to me, I kept thinking she wasn't moving very well on stage (but let's not get crazy and think she was anywhere near as bad as Fantasia last week) and the song was very Meh for me (nice quick pan to see Blake in the crowd as she was singing).

Even having just watched Iron Man I didn't recognize Robert Downey Jr. as the third Pip along with Stiller and Black,  I liked the bit and Gladys could really sing so very well.  I may just download that song for the charities. I have to give thumbs down  thumbsdown to the oh so long Love Guru bit with Mike Myers, it just dragged on and on and wasn't remotely funny until he tried to get Cook to shave off his beard, that was the only bright spot.  It could have been redeemed if Ryan had driven that stupid cushion into the mosh pit and exploded in a fireball that forever removed the swaying arms of those clowns down there.

I guess in the end Cook seemed so nice and open while Archie just stood there and spouted dreck prior to and after singing his umpteenth ballad.  I guess almost all of Syesha's vote block went to the Cookie Monster who handled his victory and final song very well.

Congratulations David Cook!!!

p.s. I agree that Amanda looked like she would rather be anywhere else than that stage tonight and I for one would not have missed her.

p.s.s.  I even liked the commercial showing the outtakes from the car bits, Guitar Hero not so much, I wonder how rittchard liked that one?  icon_biggrin
1044  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: American Idol 2008 on: May 21, 2008, 05:00:59 AM
Well it's over now, time to count up the votes.  I liked the change this year where each singer got to chose from one of ten songs in the song writing contest, not like last year where poor Blake had to sing that sappy "Here is my (shoot me) now".

I have been a David Cook fan all this time and I liked what he did tonight.  His 3 songs all seemed different from each other and I like that he picked a song he never performed for his own choice.

Snow Shovel face did his usual ballad, ballad and surprise song choice at the finish a ballad all while straining to keep his eyes open.

Not much for me to say in detail, Simon thought that Archie won the night but I hope the voters go for some originality rather than that pap that Utah Slim tossed out there.  And why did they have to add David Lloyd Webber back into the mix?  Back to Broadway for him.

My favorite self-contained fantasy book is Tad Williams War of the Flowers.  I cannot recommend that one enough.
I just finished War of the Flowers and absolutely loved it.  Thank you so much for the recommendation.  It was so good that I didn't want it to end.  I loved the premise (which I now understand is pretty overdone in fantasy) of regular guy being transported into faerie.

Glad you enjoyed it.  It's one that I will recommend over and over again to anyone who will listen.  smile  I actually just finished re-re-reading myself.   I absolutely adore that book, and find new little things each time that I hadn't noticed before.  Surprisingly I really haven't liked anything else Tad Williams has done.  I would love a follow-up to find out what happens in Faerie after the end events.

I just started Keyes' The Born Queen last week.  Unfortunately, it's been about a year since I finished The Blood Knight, and I'm having a hell of a time remembering the characters, their motivations, and how everything fits together.   I really probably should have re-read the first three before jumping the fourth, but I have too many other books I want to read.  The trouble with these 'long gap' series, I suppose...

I'll be curious to see what you think of The Born Queen.  I'm not saying anything to avoid any whiff of spoilers or plotlines.

Mine hasn't shown up yet, SSN ends with 04 and I used e-file to pay taxes this year so wtf??  Anyways I don't have plans for the money right now but I am thinking of driving to Utah for some mountain biking so I suppose that might be a good place to use it.

Jason must have thrown in the towel on the show, that was a nightmare far beyond any other singer from this years top 12 (ok I'll give you KLC's eight days a week song as up there too).  One good thing about David Arculetta is he will never see the snow shovel coming since his eyes are always shut or barely open.  David Cook was just ok but sails through to next week and Syesah is saved by Jason's meltdown (or purposeful attempt to bail out).  No question about it, Dreadlocks is packing his suitcase for the trip home.

Ahh well I had Syesha going home but BrOOke wasn't much of a surprise.  How Jason keeps staying around baffles me no end.  I guess I'll just have to get used to the idea that David Archuletta will be the next Idol (does it matter?  I never buy any of their songs) after seeing that guest singer run over and molest him on live TV.

Not knowing what I was doing I somehow managed to get to level 29 before getting ganged up on.  I had a +5 katana and a +5 iron shield, both plated but I lost the katana on level 26?? when some armored thingie kept hitting me and unequipping my stuff.  I carried on with a +1 katana I had found and seemed to be doing so well until monsters broke most of my jars and I used up all my healing.  Fun run.  I did find a mastersword that I stashed, I'll try to level it up.  I have one question, how do you level an item up once you've used the blacksmiths on a run?  do you shelve the item and have your Shiren die so you reset back to lvl 1?

My hope is that David A's fan base has peaked and that any voter for Carly, Syesha or BrOOke  will not jump on his bandwagon after their singer is eliminated.  I'm hoping the voters shift over to David Cook but who knows how many votes Archie gets each week, he may out draw the others combined.

Snow shovel to the face Archie, snow shovel indeed!

Too bad Kristy Lee Cook is gone, she could have rocked Niel Diamond's  "America" for the patriotic vote.

I hope someone sings "Brother Love's Traveling Salvation Show"  (I bet Amanda would have done it), Well I hope David A doesn't sing it but anyone else would be fine.  Other than those two songs I have a hard time thinking of Neil's other works.. I guess Song Sung Blue and Sweet Caroline are a couple of others.
1074  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: American Idol 2008 on: April 24, 2008, 09:13:42 AM
Well Well very surprising result night.  Both BrOOke and Jason knew they were destined for the stools of shame and yet neither hit the bottom 2.  Like Randy said, this week was all about popularity not ability and while I was never a Carly fan, I though she did quite well with her song.  Syesha also sang great but ended up at the bottom, her fan base must be slipping or BrOOke picked up all of KLC's fans.

So Carly heads home and we don't have to see her husband (ever notice that the producers seem to only show him for a split second?) and his crazy face tats.

With Neil Diamond week next (really? Neil Diamond?  Was Burt Bacharach too busy?) I'm betting for another round of popularity voting and Syesha heads home no matter how well she sings.
1075  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: American Idol 2008 on: April 23, 2008, 08:52:25 AM
Yep train wreck for Jason!  Dog, you gotta know that song was sung by a cat on Broadway for years!!  And a female cat to boot.  I see trouble on Castro street this week, in the bottom 3 no doubt and I have him heading for the door.

BrOOke will join him on stage at the bottom, that restart isn't going to do her any favors.  The final one of the 3 is a toss up between Syesha and Carly but I'll say Carly since I liked Syesha's song better.  Paula for once had some insight when she said Jesus Christ Superstar was too high a register for Carly and I agree, it just sounded off a bit.

To quote Tony Kornheiser on his radio show "I just want to hit David Archuleta with a snow shovel at this point", his songs all sound the same to me, nothing new at all, week after week.

David Cook did a decent job on his song and while Micheal Crawford is the gold standard, I'm not sure the AI voting public is that familiar with Andrew Lloyd Webber's stuff in the first place.

Jason, Memory is sung by a cat.. A CAT!!!! Dude you gotta pick better songs for yourself.  I think if KLC was still around and got to sing Don't Cry for me Argentina, she would have survived this week.

Are those mechanical disks, or hydraulics?

I had a Divinci with hydraulic, and I hated them so much, I got rid of the bike.  So fussy.  The mechanical disks entrigue me though.

They are Formula K-24 hydraulic's and they work great, not fussy at all for me.  They are also the first disc brakes I've ever used, my old bike had the V-brakes.
