I tried an experiment with my new DSi-XL (curse you forum effect) and my old DS light using Infinite Space.  I put my camera on a tripod so it would always be the same distance from the two systems and then took some pictures hoping that it might make a decent comparison between the two.  Lets see if it works at all.

At a Tavern with DS light

I need to go look again at the XL battle scene as I don't remember it looking that pixiliated (sp?) but perhaps this will help in some decision process for someone.

Lee-  I thought he did a pretty awesome job. He quickly got into he "power mode" and pretty much slayed it from there. He did cut off the end note prematurely but that just a minor thing. He definately climbed up a few notches in my eyes.

That is what I forgot to write, his song ended very strangely like he forgot the note or couldn't hold it at all.  Could be a problem down the road for him.

First off.... Stop fucking around with the format producers!  I don't need to see what is happening back stage, I don't need to see the judges walking onto the stage or coming back from a smoke break, I don't need post performance comments from the singers.  None of that makes for added enjoyment, it just adds to the slog to get through this show.

Sheyboygan-  Oh girl you had better hope the screaming meemie fans save you as I expect they will because that wasn't good at all.  The only time it didn't sound flat and way off was when the backing singers were overpowering your vocals.  I wish I could have slapped Kara when she said the screams were the only good part, way to ensure we get more of that week after week, it's getting to the point that I'd rather hear Danny Gokey scream again while singing Dream On than be subjected to the banshee one more time.

Casey-  Not bad but nothing all that great, he just seemed to stand there on stage with little movement and I thought both the backing singers and the band were too far away from him (this was true for all the performances that used them tonight minus Crystal who had the singers right at the piano).

Large Mike-  All right that was pretty good I thought but I didn't like him singing behind the judges, not sure what he was trying to do there.  The song was good and since he was sitting down we weren't served a extra large side of ham along with the song.  I hadn't liked any of his stuff before this week but I'm willing to admit that he can go far in this thing.

Didi-  NOOOOOOOOoooooOOOOooooo!!!!  Dang it Didi I had hopes you could bring it together for yourself but that was bad.  Started out flat and never went anywhere (dang it that is what Randy said too, curse you Didi for making me agree with him).  I'm not agreeing with Simon or Kara about how you are lost, last week was passable and the week before that was "Playing with Fire" which was really good so hang in there even if you are the judges punching bag this year, nobody else beside Tim is treated as harshly. Do not turn into Megan Joy!  Caw! Caw!

Tragic Tim-  Booooo!!! Boooo!!  Get the hell off the stage!

Andrew-  Oh so close but then F'n Ryan had to bring up "Straight Up" so there goes another double shot.  Really good vocals I thought and best of the guys I think.  Maybe this season won't be quite as bad as it looked just one week ago.

KatieBot-  Zzzzzzzzzz... whaaa?  Did Katie sing another old song?  Of course she did and it wasn't all that good either, she reminds me of Remiel from a few seasons ago who just sang songs that other Idols had sung before her (and always much better than her).  Look for Idoltary to break out the robot Godzilla clips for her.

Lee-  Good again and it was so easy to see the improved confidence during his performance but still miles to go, I thought his shoulders were going to break when he was singing to Usher he had them so scrunched up.

Crystal-  Whew!  Took a chance and it payed off to some extent but Simon was right, she needs to stay true to herself.  Tonight she looked less confident and her comments to the judges seemed to show that as well, usually she is Joe Cool up there but not this time as she got talking about fashion and other stuff, not what MammaSox really thrives on.  She looked pretty good in that dress though.  Loved the song.

Aaron-  Decent but he didn't manage to get the notes Usher wanted him to hit so it was rather blase overall, I figure the producers couldn't get Crystal on last again so had to trot out Aaron for the finish, not a performance worthy of the pimp spot.  Ellen needs to back off the "hey you look 11" jokes, I'm not sure a 16 year old kid will take that well.

Usher was a pretty good mentor I thought when he wasn't talking about connecting to the audience which he did many times.

Bottom 3  Tim-KatieBot-Didi with Tim heading out the door I hope, hate to see yet another girl head home leaving only 3 girls and 6 guys.

You know things are bad when Entertainment Weekly (which kisses American Idol's ass on a regular basis) has a headline on the cover which reads:

"American Idol Top 12: Why Can't They Sing?"

Ouch.  icon_biggrin

Ever watch Michael Slezak and Idolatry on the ew.com website?  No ass kissing there but plenty of funny stuff, highly recommended viewing and be sure to check out last seasons shows. [Kristen] "Put the Go in Gokey!"[/Kristen].  I will say they are pretty nice to the ousted contestants who show up on Idolatry after being voted off but the rest of it is pretty hard (That's what she said!) on everyone even Adam from last season.
1048  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Your next American Idol on: March 30, 2010, 02:01:31 AM
Randy- "Dawg that's what I'm talking about! Way to hit it out of the park, a bit pitchy in parts but you worked it out!  One million billion percent yes!"

Ellen- "Tango Tango?  No, Tangyou Tangyou very much!"

Kara- "I've never cried before during this show but that was just beautiful, so beautiful.  Next week you would do better to sing a song written by me and that will show that you are a true package artist."

Simon- "I have to agree with...... Randy!  Perfect song choice, well sung and frankly the only one tonight that didn't make me want to bolt to X-Factor immediately!"

Very nice film btw.

New drinking game: any time one of the contestants says "I just wanted to have fun up there", drink a beer. You'll be passed out by the end of the show.  icon_biggrin

Make it a competition, one player has to drink for "I just wanted to have fun" while another has to drink any time "song choice" is mentioned.  Who passes out first?  Oh and everyone drinks when Sheboygan screams, Big Mike picks somebody up and of course double shots any time "Straight Up" is brought up.

Well the wife who "never has time to watch Idol"  somehow managed to watch it and then delete it from the DVR before I got home from work so no recap from me this week.  Dang I wanted to see the Paige train wreck that I've read about.  I always like Powersox's songs and Didi is my non-front runner favorite that I like to hear so I miss them this week.  Sheboygan screamed at the end of the song again right?  Well I can't see how the judges have the balls to tell Crystal to lose the guitar which is a integral part of her "being an artist" while slobbering all over Screamy McScreamster's weekly vocal violence.

any of you who fly on a commercial jet get more radiation in one flight that most people in naval nuclear power get from the reactor over an entire career.

Unfortunately i can only say that about operational reactors for me.  As an enlisted nuc after qualifying at prototype early i was "given" to a shut down prototype that was undergoing an overhaul of sort.  I ended up int eh reactor compartment lagging Main coolant piping and one of my pipes had a 25 REM/hr hot spot.  i ended up getting about 2 REM over a couple of days.  Most Navy nucs never come within sniffing distance of a REM over their lifetime at least with the source being a Navy nuclear power plant.

Oh the stories I could tell about radiation exposure having been an ELT in the navy for six years and a Chemistry and Radiation Protection Tech for the last 25 years at Diablo Canyon.  But what does that have to do with The Pacific?  nothing really except for that one time on shore leave in Subic Bay..... well never mind about that.

I caught the first episode on DirectTV's 101 channel and while it was very good I'm not going to be subscribing to HBO to watch it, the violence and bloodshed isn't something I enjoy watching no matter how accurate.  My tastes have changed and for some reason this show bothered me to watch, I have nothing against it at all and was surprised at my reaction to it.  I did like watching Band of Brothers so I'm not sure why I've changed my viewing habits now.

I've been pretty underwhelmed this season.  In years past I've enjoyed a number of performers and didn't mind watching with my wife, but this season no one really stands out, I have yet to be wowed other than when Andrew did "Straight Up" early on (he needs to sing some Sublime ASAP), and for me everyone else just blurs together as equally forgettable.

Siobhan sounds too nasally and like she's doing something funny with her throat, Crystal is unique, she knows who she is, and she's got a great voice, Didi, while struggling at times, did a reasonable job, but outside of Crystal overall I think this season's field is disappointingly weak.  In the past I had Chris Daughtry, David Cook, Allison Iraheta, Kris Allen, Blake Lewis, and a few other stand-out performers to catch my eye, but this season I can't find a single singer who stands out for me.  Everyone seems equally mediocre and forgettable.  And for the life of me I can't see why Siobhan received so much praise.  She hit that scream note pretty well, but the rest of the song just sounded odd to me.

I'd have to agree with you, this season is really turning out to be kind of a dud/bust for me so far.  The judges are all over the place, even more so than in years past.  One minute they want you to "be yourself" or skew "younger" or "make the song your own" then the next they punish the contestants for taking the advice.  They keep talking about how recordable someone's voice is or how good they sing, but then criticize for not enough "drama" or "wow factor."  Clearly Siobanshee delivers the "drama" by dressing weird, getting weird lighting and screaming.  Don't get me wrong, I think she's kind of interesting and fun to watch on stage, but she's not someone I'd necessarily buy music from.  I think that's really the problem I'm seeing, the discontinuity between finding the best singer/recording artist vs. the most dynamic performer, and the conflicting advice from the judges because of this.  Ideally you'd get both in a single package but this year there doesn't seem to be anyone who emobides that.  Then you add the bizarre voting dynamics and different voting blocks, where clearly the tweens hold a huge impact, and you have the makings of a very strange show.

Good point on the judges, I'm getting sick of hearing "package artist" or "this is the type of artist you are going to be", the voters don't care how packageable you are or where you are going, they want to see a good singer on stage that night before they vote.  I do wish they would stop having the judges come out from behind the stage at the start of the show, AI really shouldn't be about them at all other than what they thought of the performance.  I also wish the judges didn't get to look in on rehearsals during the week as it's pretty clear they make up a lot of their comments before Ryan even takes the stage at the start of the night.  I'm curious to see how AI works next season with Simon gone, the others are so meh even Ellen who is only worth listening to when she has a good joke.

Paige: I thought it was a horrible performance from start to finish. I am just amazed that lots of people apparently think she is a good singer. I just can not see it, even in the slightest. 99% of the time I can find some redeeming quality in their singing and, while I might not like it, see where others would. For her, I just do not get it at all.

The LA Times had an article today on last night's ep, and after reading what they wrote about Paige I have to say it bumped her performance and song selection up a notch for me.

Quote
And Miles! A black woman taking on "Honky Tonk Woman" -- beyond that, declaring herself a honky-tonk woman -- claimed redemption for all those Jagger and his mates shagged, stole from and occasionally dishonored, from backup singer Merry Clayton to mentor Tina Turner to the anonymous slave women fetishized in "Brown Sugar," a song that will never make the "Idol" cut.

Kind of an interesting interpretation which had never occured to me.

In no way do I think Paige is deep enough to have sung that for redemption for past wrongs to black women.  It smacks of last weeks "Smile" disaster that was sung for Michael Jackson, bleh.  It was crappy singing for me both weeks.  As for the others;

Didi -  I liked her song even if she almost lost it a couple of times as Simon said, I like her so maybe I grade it higher than it was due to likeability.

Sheboygan -  Yep my best of the night and she had the producers on her side with all the dramatic lighting and the red stairs make a return from Adam Lambert's performances of last season.  I really liked it except for the scream near the end that didn't really connect the last phrase she sang to the words just before the scream.  The parts surrounding the scream were so well done I think the song would have benefited from not having the Lambert trademark in it.

PowerSox -  Pretty good and there were moments in the song that were great but no doubt to me that it was the second best performance of the night.

The rest?  Eh I just can't seem to care about them at all, nothing stands out in the decent area and Tim's song was a train wreck all around.

Are the producers telling the judges to make it all sunshine and happy faces this year?  There really wasn't any commenting on how bad the singer was, just either "it's good" or "hey better than last week so good for you".  I wonder if they are worried about the strength of the field in positions 3-12 that they want to get the fans interested in them in any way they can.  Simon was the only judge who seemed to hear what I did and comment on it and even he was much less critical that normal for the night.  I thought Crystal got the most critical comments of the night even if it was one of the top two performances, everyone else seemed to get a pass on any issues they had with their songs (Sheboygan excepted since she killed it tonight Dawg!)
1055  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Official 2010 American Idol Thread on: March 12, 2010, 09:21:44 AM
Ummmm wow, just wow on the girls side of the elimination.  No way did Lilly get beaten out by Katie/Paige/Lacey and Katelyn was better than Paige and Katie as well.  Looks like clear sailing for Powersox since none of the remaining women have a chance against her, Lilly was the only one who I thought could maybe rise to the occasion with maybe Katelyn having some good weeks as well but Katie/Lacey/Paige have no chance.  I guess Sheboygan might do it as she is weird and different but so far I really have only heard her one note from a week ago and not much else.  As much as I like Didi she is too fragile and will have weeks that the pressure will get to her, I really hope she proves me wrong but I can't shake that feeling.  I do like Crystal and would like to see her in the finals but the competition was gutted tonight on the girls side.

The guys?  Eh I can't make myself watch an entire song performance from any of them so no cares either way with who goes home,  I guess I'm sorta surprised Andrew survived over Alex but perhaps there is room for only one Lambert on Idol.

The judges are tools of the highest order with all their interplay amongst themselves, the show really should not be about them other than what they thought of the performance.  I don't need to see Simon and Kara draped over each other and stop with the "you could win this thing" stuff, that didn't work out too well for Alex this week did it Ellen?
1056  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Official 2010 American Idol Thread on: March 10, 2010, 05:17:51 PM
Katie - ZZZZZZZZZZ...  More of the same from her, yes she sang a current song but it had the style of the the previous ones, just boring with no real excitement or "moments" as the Dawg says.

Siobhan - Hmmm are the producers pimping her?  She was the only one to get any sort of pre-performance moment where she got to talk about her dad and such.  I didn't like the song she sang that much and she did nothing to change the lyrics away from boy to girl which threw me off a bit.  Is she just going to sing songs that allow her to hit her one note sometime in the performance and hope that gets her through?  It was ok but not great for me Dawg.

Lacey -  Surprise performance for her I thought.  I liked the song and how she sang it and couldn't help noticing that she had absolutly no intro at all, just a quick throw in from Sibhons finish to Laceys start.  I thought she did really well.

Katelyn - I didn't like it but how much of that is the song?  I can't stand "I feel the Earth move" and this version didn't change my mind at all.  She looks good and perhaps she will stay around after this but I'd never vote for her based on that performance Wurlitzer playing or not.

Didi -  When Ryan said she was singing "Rhiannon" I was like "oh no! what a disaster in the making"  as nobody ever comes off well compared the Stevie Nicks IMHO.  As she started in on the slow version I have to be truthful and say I really wasn't liking it and since she is one of my favorites I kept saying "no no no" and getting ready for tears when the judges tore her apart.  Imagine my surprise when they all really liked it.  I went back and watched it again this time trying not to compare it with the much more up tempo Fleetwood Mac version and I have to say that yes it actually was pretty good standing on its own, well done Didi.  Ellen gave her very good advice about how now matter how good you are there will be critics so suck it up and play on.

Paige -  Smile as you walk out the door Paige, that was a mess and not even a hot mess at that.

Bow-Er-Sox, Bow-Er-Sox, Bow-Er-Sox! -  err sorry I watch Idolatry over on ew.com and when ever they mention Crystal they play the beginning of Queens "We Will Rock You" while saying Bowersox.  Nice work again that I would buy from Itunes, I just hope the relentless pimping from Simon et al stops soon.  We can all see she has talent beyond most of the others and don't need this "best of the night" "one to beat" "one million percent in for next week" sthick that they have going on.  Give us some thoughts about the weeks performance instead please.

The Albino -  Or Lilly if you prefer, I now can't look at her without thinking of the Albino from "The Princess Bride" since I read a post pointing that out last week.  Pretty good but hard to go from Crystal playing the electirc guitar to Lilly on the mandolin like Tiny Tim (ok Ukulele for him but it looked close).  She will be safe this week but it wasn't great for me.

Who goes?  Paige for sure and the other one will be a toss up between Katie and Lacey who sang well this week but was very weak the previous weeks.
1057  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [TV] Official 2010 American Idol Thread on: March 04, 2010, 08:09:22 PM
Crystal was very very good last night, she just seems to be wearing her songs like she wrote them instead of just covering them like so many of the other guys/girls.  Rittchard she sang a Clearance Creedwater Revival song and a well know one at that "As long as I can see the light" but did it in such a way that CCR never entered my mind while she sang and I thought that was a good thing.  Lily was pretty good in her song "A Change is gonna come" I believe but it wasn't quite like Crystal's ability to own it.  Sibohan's "note" was the only thing interesting about her performance but I like her and I'm sure she will go pretty far.  Didi, Didi, Didi no girl that just didn't work and man is she ever fragile up there, I don't want to watch when she get eliminated (perhaps tonight I think) as it will be brutal.  I really like Didi but she isn't living up to the level she sang Terrified at and that it is too bad.  I sorta see what they are talking about with Katie, they want her to be energetic on stage yet when she sings I think of Michelle Phifer (sp?) in the Fabulous Baker Boys laying on a piano singing torch songs even with "Put your records on".

I really hate the "wrong song choice!", "Dude mix it up make it your own!", "Oh man that just didn't work, you don't want to change that song like that!" crap that they put out and even Simon commented on it and I think you are right about him just itching to bolt to X-factor.

Who is going home?  I'd have to say Haeley who sang "The Climb" while smiling all the while during a song about overcoming adversity, it was just weird and not well sung anyways (and had to follow Crystal).  And sadly I have to say Didi unless she gets some votes from people who don't want to see her cry.  Pinkhair (Lacy) could go as well I suppose but I felt she was better this week than Didi.  Does it really matter at this point?  Crystal seems to be so far in front and Simon saying it was like finding out Kelly Clarkson had talent the first time won't help the others.  The only thing that will slow her down will be the ridiculous theme weeks where she has to sing a Disco song or cover Wayne Newton.  The guys? no idea at all, I couldn't watch most of the show so didn't get a feel on how they sang.

Well I'm just learning to play the piano so any GAS attacks revolve around them.  I have a Casio Priva PX-800 console style digital piano at home but I'm looking for something I can move around a bit and expand my practice time so a trip to Guitar Center was on and I got to try  a few pianos out.

First up;

Korg SV-1 73 key piano that I had my eye on for a few months, great for portability and the piano sounds were very good but the action felt just a bit bouncy for my taste but still a contender.

Why the Korg action didn't thrill me is pictured below;

Roland RD-700GX with Ivory Feel keyboard action, very good piano sounds and I loved the keyboard action and feel.  It is a full 88 key instrument so is quite a bit larger and heavier than the Korg but I won't be moving it that much, it's not like I'm in a band or anything.  When I decided the Roland might be a contender then I had to add in the next digital piano as well, similar size and weight.  The Yamaha CP-5 that has yet to arrive in stores (anticipated sometime in March) but got huge reaction at the 2010 NAMM show along with its more expensive sibling the CP-1 that is out now for a cool $5k which is far too much for my blood.

I'm waiting for the Yamaha to arrive and then make up my mind, the Korg is still in the running because the size and weight are ideal and it will certainly be enough instrument for me.  The Roland is a great piano but along with the CP-5 they are a bit bigger than I'd prefer.

What this song err show needs is more cowbell Casey!  No need to focus on Chuck and Sarah every episode, take the recent episode of House where they showed a day at the hospital from Dr Cuddy's viewpoint with funny snippets of House and his team interwoven into the mix.  So maybe they can have the main story line be Elle and Morgan trying to uncover Chuck's secret and the cameras only show a glimpse of Chuck/Sarah/Casey and what they are doing every once in awhile. The way they do it now is just the opposite, we know the whole storyline and the setup but when Elle sees Chuck in some compromising situation it isn't surprising or after 3 seasons all that funny.

I use the X-4's for my 360 and an older set of X-2's for TV.  The funny thing is that either headset will work with either receiver so if I wear my X-4's into the living room while the tv is on they will pick up the audio just fine.  I'm not sure what would happen if both receivers were within range of each other (about 20' is max distance I get from either set) but they are far enough apart that it isn't an issue.

Launch unit was lunch after 4 months but the replacement (it was a new unit since I had a warranty from the store I bought it from for replacement) is still going strong aside from the misc disc read errors I'm getting now.

Terminal, Highrise and Skidrow are my least favorites strictly due to their imbalances.  Whoever designed Highrise needs to be shot.  They made it so you can shoot into starting spawns from starting spawns and that's just horrible design.   Terminal and Skidrow (SR more than Term) are bad because of the ability to completely lock down the map from one side that is vastly better than the other tactically.  A competent group camping the outside in terminal can contain the enemy to inside the building and wreck havok.  On Skidrow the loading dock side can be locked down by 3 good players, two in some cases depending on the other team's skill.

In a game where we had GT'rs on both sides Kato and I were able to hold that half of the map just the two of us and maps really shouldn't be that easily containable.

Rundown has the potential to be locked to one side or the other, but neither side is hands down easier to do so and that doesn't bother me as much.

Invasion is really nasty if you can get your team to hole up on the embassy side of things, but otherwise is a pretty balanced map imo.

Forget balance I hate Wastelands because I can't see anyone!  I struggle trying to find someone to shoot even if I'm looking at the minimap for red dots, if I head over to one chances are they see me coming and cap me first.  I'm also guilty of looking at a spot on the map thinking "Hey is that a bush or a player?  BOOM! KILLCAM!! oh it was a sniper."   It would be fun to see a persons kills/deaths per each map, I'm sure Wasteland is my worst map by far.

Wow...must have been great if it caused you to post for the first time in 9 months.

It was pretty funny during the times I didn't have CSL muted, that NYguy dude was livid and it probably didn't help we copied his clan tag among other mischief.

On a side note I really can't play in a team of Hark/CSL/Calvin/Notbob (hehe)/Jarrod/Kato etc...  I find I can't find kills fast enough as any unskilled player is downed quickly by the power team and the skilled players on the other team destroy me so fast.  Last night I had a match were I was 0 0 and 4 and another one where I also didn't get a kill.  Add that to many other matches where I only managed 1-3 kills and it's time for me to either bail out to FFA where I sometimes even win a match (it's true I tell you) or try get a 10 foot tall shoe gun wielding amazon to turn her hair into a dragon that eats angels.

Is that what it was Romy?  (p.s. I'm OtterChaos on XBL)  I use the X4's which are pretty similar I would think and in MW2 they work fine until the batteries get low and then I can't chat with them but I can still hear others chatting, a change of batts and I'm good to go again.  Now in Forza3 I cannot use them for chatting while using the Microsoft wheel, I have to plug in the standard xbox communicator and I've never been able to figure out why.  Perhaps it's time to search the interwebs for solutions.

Some nights have a more social feel

So MW2 is just a glorified chat room for you huh?  And they make fun of us MMO fans ninja

I hear there's some kind of game that can be played in between socializing as well.  Kind of like an interactive chat room where you can shoot at the people who may not agree with your casserole recipe.

Sounds like this game needs Hush-a-Boom technology (tm Better off Ted)

So Better Off Ted has been back for a couple of weeks now, and it's doing terribly in the ratings.

Please watch this show!!  It's extremely funny.

That's sad to hear, I love the show and Portia De Rossi is fantastic in her role.  I hope the ratings improve soon.

I do play some pickup FFA games in order to complete challenges (working on FMJ kills for the ACR at the moment) and usually have a k/d ratio of close to 1.  When I get a chance to join in with the GT'ers in TDM I will see scores like 2 kills/15 deaths over and over and as Hark pointed out my usual accolade is "Most time spent watching kill cams" so why do I enjoy those games more?  The social aspect is a big draw and it's fun to listen to everyone talk during the match, I try not to complain much but sometimes I feel like I've unlocked Complainer Pro and am using it as my 4th perk.  Calling out where I got shot from is one useful service I can provide and the occasional anti-air kill helps out too.  This is a bit different than denog's issues though since I have Hark and Kato and Calvin etc. to pick up the kills and we stand a chance of winning the match, I should look at my stats for match wins as I believe I have more wins than losses even with an overall k/d of .55 or so.  If I'm getting my butt kicked all over the place in a pickup game then I won't stick around, it really isn't that much fun when one player has a much higher skill level and calls in chopper gunners/AC-130's map after map.  Oh and one last thing about sucking, I have the 8-ball emblem and those uber players will never get it muhahaha! (You probably earn it for having 100 accolades for "Most time watching kill cams" but I'm not sure).

I wanted to watch Farscape on DVD but the discs were oh so expensive when they were released originally.  I see now that Amazon has the complete series for $58 so I may give it a shot.

Okay, so after sleeping on it, I might still be on occasionally, since lots of office buddies play regularly.  But I'm definitely done playing with randoms.

I have all the same issues you do when trying to play this game but actually I've found playing random matches of Free For All to be a way of getting kills and exp.  I will check the experience levels of the players I'm matched up with and bail if there is a prestige player or two in the group but in most cases I get a pretty decent spread of players.  FFA works for me since I can shoot at anyone I manage to see unlike our TDM matches where if I see someone its either a) a teammate on a killing spree or b) an enemy looking right at me about to shoot me in the face or c) an enemy who accidentally stuck his head out into view and is about to be killed by one of my teammates.  I've accepted the fact that in TDM with GT'ers I may only get 3 kills a match but when I need a break from that then random FFA is my choice.  Still I do like playing with GT'ers since there is communication within the group and it is much more fun to be able to chat with the others.  I did have a FFA match that papasmurf joined in on and that was fun to chat while playing and I can't not mention that even though he kicked my ass all over the map I got a sweet final stand kill on him with a kinetic grenade to the crotch, much fun ensued.

I'm up to 15 FMJ kills with the SCAR so far and the secret for me is to just join a random group on XBL.  When I play with the GT'ers I rarely get more than 4-5 kills/match and usually it's lower than that, on a random group that XBL matches me up with I have had upwards of 12 kills with an average of probably 6 or so.  Now that isn't to say I won't join the GT'ers in action, I'll still do that but I won't be so reluctant to join a pickup group when nothing else is available.  I just unlocked the M16 and I'm liking it a lot so far, easy recoil and good damage as well and I'll probably use it for most maps that don't have lots of FMJ opportunities to level it up.
