A lot of what I read is like this RPS impressions piece on PC version -- that much of the game is screwy and clumsy and poorly designed, that much of the game that sounded exciting to me (space combat) is mediocre at best, that much of the nuts and bolts gaming is tedious unless you're truly into crafting and inventory micro-management. But... that he still can't stop playing it.  icon_smile

Wot I Think: No Manís Sky

This likely reads as an overwhelmingly negative review, and itís deserved Ė No Manís Sky is massively flawed, and systematically poorly designed. But itís also a massive playground of potential and opportunity, and its sheer ambition, for all its massive stumbles, is rewarded in play.

Itís bloody awful that the whole time Iíve been playing, the dozens of hours on PC this weekend, Iíve been thinking about the PS4 hastily hooked up to the TV at the other side of my office and wishing I were still playing over there.

But I can see the PC version improving come the patches it desperately needs, and I can fantasise about the possible reworkings of the abysmal ship controls and stupid inventories and long mouse presses, and then this version will step forward and take the lead. Itís not there yet, but it could be.
Couple of the comments were interesting too:

Itís simply by far the worst game Iíve ever loved.
...
I am enjoying it, but I literally fight with the controls to play rather than them being hidden things you forget about once you know them.
So I feel pretty sure it's not for me, at least in its current state. I'll keep it on the wish list though.

The apparently poor use of mouse and drag'n'drop reminds me a lot of the indie cheapie How to Survive. There they couldn't be bothered to convert the gamepad-type inventory management (much of it using shoulder buttons to scroll L-R through inventory items) to the more typical drag'n'drop that virtually every PC-native game uses as a matter of course. I'd like to think in NMS case though, with this volume of sales, the dev can afford to do something about it in this case, if it wants to.

It could be like some other AAA-price titles like Shadows of Mordor and Mad Max where I did get in the water once the title was on sale. NMS has sold so astronomically (inexplicably?) well on both platforms though, that it doesn't sound like Sony would need to put it on sale on Steam any time soon.

That review hits exactly my experience with NMS down to the worst game I love to play.  I don't think I could add anything else.  I am currently on a moderately hostile planet looking for one last animal so I can earn 250k credits and that should be enough to buy a much better ship but I can't find the dang thing no matter how long I search.  I found an item that sells for good money and is plentiful on the planet but finding a selling location is difficult so I end up inventory full very often.  Ahh well I need to find that damn animal so back at it, I could just leave but I have made it my goal to complete this task which should make going to another world fresh.

I'd like the game more if I could spend less time in the interface.  For me the graphics are fine and I can withstand the hitches here and there but I don't like how long it takes to get things done sometimes.  Also I need to master that running hack as often I want to travel somewhere close but running takes too long and so I fly but the animation of getting into the ship, taking off, landing and getting out are too slow and repetitive.  Oh and I have yet to master the star map, I get frustrated when I try to determine where to jump next as you can select any star and there is no indication that it is in range or not and the map view slews around so now I've lost my perspective (I did not take the Atlas path at the start so no path to the center for me) and have to hope I finally click on one in range.

My 980Ti system is bogging down at times with the game, I think it needs more work for sure.

Some UI stuff I don't get either.  When using a terminal to buy/sell stuff I can access both my exosuit and spaceship inventory but when talking to a trader I can only get to my exosuit inventory no matter how close my ship is to me.  Plus I'd love to reduce the timer on the selection buttons, don't see why I need it at all really.

I caved to the hype from the 1st game and just like the reviewer in the video burned out pretty darn quick. I liked the idea but the content was lame.

I like what I see thus far but I am not jumping in a quick as I did last time smile

We shall see.

Same for me, just didn't spend any real time with the first one.

So 2.6 gig download shouldn't take very long for me.

I'm still getting it as what content I've seen would keep me happy for some time.  Worth $60?  Not sure but I think I can get some value out of it for me.

I am curious why no pre-loading on PC though, it uses servers right?  So why not keep them off until go time but allow pre-load?  I'm seeing the PS4 version is 6GB?  I guess I can go for a walk or something while my not so fast internet grabs it in an hour or two.

Fuck that shit about PS4 getting a 'timed exclusive'. It's CLEARLY that, and not the bullshit stated by the founder:

Quote
In a subsequent tweet, he provided a bit of explanation as to why the date changed. He wrote, "We think a global release is best for everyone on PC. Retail forces us to be staggered on PS4."

Sorry, but a lot of people buy digital nowadays (especially PC). Don't tout this 'global release' bullcrap in this day and age. Also, (pissed off) PC purchaser here.

Does suck as you need to go into NMS hiding mode to avoid hearing too much about the game but then again you might hear something that turns you away from it.  Hard not to see headlines and stuff about such an anticipated game though.
11  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: No Man's Sky - all procedurally generated everything! on: August 06, 2016, 02:37:34 AM
There is always a segment of gamers who are going to try and be the quickest to the "end" even in a game like this so I'm just wondering what the speedrun time will be.  I don't think I'll play NMS but I wonder what happens at the center of the universe when people get there.  Will you see other players since you are all now in the small space at the center?  If so I'd think speedrunners would love to get there first and name the planets and whatever else there is at the core for bragging rights.

I may try the Brookhaven experience but will wait for reviews, too many VR games lack depth and  length to be worth more than a few dollars.

Competitive mode and balance patch out for the XB1 finally smile

From what I've read the Torb nerf is not in yet, just the McCree and Widowmaker ones from the PC version.  I'm not sure I'd want to try ranking in comp play as the torbtornado will be massive.  Not that sure it matters in the end as I imagine my rating will be something like 25 or so.

Otter saw your two invites last night.  My nephew was playing on my account briefly before we started his party.   I'll be on tonight hopefully.  Btw, not sure I want to do season yet.

No worries, we had Pug, Kato and Mikegami playing last night in competitive mode.  I ranked in at 46 and proceeded to lose two levels in the next 3 games but am stable at 44 now.  There was a but (since fixed) that didn't give proper exp for KOTH matches and I think I lost more games where full exp was applied and won a few where I got very little exp.  The last game we played last night was a doozy as we ran into a very skilled group that rolled us like nobodies bussiness.

Great episode but bittersweet knowing how fast the plot is running right now.  I love the action but can't help wondering how much more we are going to get before the end.  Cersei finally removes the dragging plot point that is the High Sparrow and in a great way but suffers consequences as a result, very nice.  I too am disappointed to lose Margery as I always held out hope she'd disrobe again (I'm shallow like that) and I'm still not feeling the King in the North as the answer to the winter problem, good thing Daneyrs is on her way accompanied by some cool music.

McCree is 75% pick on PC and interestingly on PS4 only 55% with the XB1 at 65%, wonder why the XB1 is that much higher than the PS4.

Reading reports that Blizzard is going to nerf Toblorone on the consoles by decreasing turret damage by 30%.  Shame really as we may not see many more Plays of the Game like this one.
https://youtu.be/DiMJ-s4T16M

I don't think damage is the problem as much as it's speed of target acquisition and target lock.

This is proven out on the PC as Torb's are not that big an issue when going against them using a keyboard and mouse and no damage nerf for them on the PC.  I'd say it's mostly how long it takes controllers to target the turret vs the mouse so maybe Bliz will refine the nerf in the future.

Overbuff runs stats for Overwatch, here are the defense hero stats for all three platforms.

PC

PS4

XB1

A quick look shows Torb's pick rate is 20% higher on consoles and his win rate is 10% higher.  I also noticed how much higher the selection rate is for widowmaker on PC vs consoles.  I will take a look to see what Mcree's rate was on pc vs console.

All fine but this is a quick fix, I'd think other options would take longer to test out and as it is the TorbTurretTango is driving other players mad at the moment so I'm happy to see something being done at least.

Finally got a chance to watch last week's episode.  At first I was put off by the length of the battle scenes but in the end it made the finish more impactful.  I will say that Sansa is rising up to the top of my favorite chars now (but can't surpass Arya!) and I like to believe she played Snow and Ramsey both.  Her look when the reinforcements arrive sold me as well as the small smile as she walks away at the end of the episode.

I'd be much happier if teams could only have one of a certain hero so that I don't run into 3 Toby's and a Bastion.  I can see why Blizzard didn't do that as Overwatch is a more friendly game and they don't want players to be locked out of their favorite character.

I won't play a character if I see someone else is, too.  I'm also still in the mix it up phase.  Lately, I've been letting the random choice at the start guide me, but I tend to follow the Team Tips a little too much.

Quote from: Soulchilde on June 07, 2016, 10:03:50 AM

The anwer to that scenario is everyone goes tank with a healer (lucio) and clean out the point.  Problem is that people loathe to change and continue to rush the point solo

I do like sticking to the character I started with to try and wrestle a win, but the numerous defeats make it clear that this is not the best strategy.  That's a weird mindset to get into, though, especially for a game that is otherwise so inviting.  When I'm playing a game, I take on the character I chose, but here, it's more like you're playing a real time strategy game, but you only get to send out one unit at a time, and you have to directly control that unit.  But nothing in the way the menus and character choosing is laid out lends itself to this way of thinking.  Hell, even the voting at the end just shows one character the person played.

Too true about not wanting to change mid-match.  I was playing one match where we were attacking against 6 Symmetra's and getting cleaned up just trying to get near the point.  Finally it clicked for us and Kato and I grabbed Winston who jumped past the turrets, shielded up and destroyed said turrets quickly leading to a victory just by changing team makeup as needed.  Most times I get caught up in making sure I keep going until my ulti is ready even if it makes no sense.

There's nothing dazzling, inventive or new here, for sure, but like with most Blizzard games, what is here is incredibly well polished and distilled down to what works.  Consequently, it clicks easily when you pick up a controller.  You play for a bit, maybe wondering what the fuss is about.  You have fun, but wonder if you were expecting more.  If you don't just shrug and put it away at that point, you may find that several hours disappear before you know where they went.

For me, in both the beta and full game, I won't be happy until I've given every character a go at least once.  By that time, I will naturally have picked some favorites (which oddly, aren't lining up as neatly between the beta and retail release as I thought they would), and be able to settle into them, switching between some as the team requires.

I still haven't tried all the heros yet and I'm level 36 now on the XB1.  I sometimes am afraid to upset the balance of the team by choosing a hero I can't play well but in actuality every time I've done it it hasn't gone too bad (except for an all Symmetra match).  I even tried widowmaker once since I got a great outfit for her and wanted to check it out and I didn't do too bad there.

I still have yet to play to any extent Genji, Reaper, Bastion (turret bastard),Mei, D.Va and Zenyatta.  Very little play time with Mercy, Mccree (who I have two great outfits for), Tracer (just too much movement required for her to be effective and I can't cope), Toblerone (ditto turret bastard), Hanzo(one all Hanzo match, didn't go well) and Zarya(who I think will be getting more time after wonderpug and the others explained her abilities to me).

I use Junkrat and Lucio the most and like to play Reinhardt when needed.  Roadhog is ok and Soldier 76 is typical FPS fare, both are fun to play but I like Pharah the most on offense, Winston is just hard for me to figure out how to be effective atm.  The others I play with all have different favs of course and it makes for some fun teams at times and other times we get wiped out quickly but the games are fun and nothing like pulling out a win after being down 0% to 99% on a map but grabbing the point in overtime and holding it for the victory.

In the campaign you reach checkpoints during the levels where the game saves and if you exit that is where you restart, you can't just save at any point.  You can go back and replay any level to pick up missed items if you want but all the monsters will have respawned.  One thing I ran into was reaching certain checkpoints in a level and not being able to go back to earlier sections due to doors closing behind me and so not being able to get items I missed unless I restart the entire level.

The show is great but suffers from too many story lines trying to advance in a 10 episode arc.  No Arya?  No Dragons?  and worst of all
Spoiler for Hiden:
Osha comes back and Ramsey offs her in two seconds, I loved her character in the books and it is sad to see her go out so quickly and with no real impact on the story

Well I'm very interested. WWI is a time period that you hardly ever see in gaming.

Because warfare sucked back then.  The guns sucked, the variety sucked...everything was primitive trench warfare.

The trailer pretty clearly shows this isn't some WWI sim. More like WWI as envisioned by Michael Bay.

They have said it's no alternate history, they're sticking with what was there.  Which means there are none of the things that make most shooters enjoyable like variable scopes, red dot sights, holo sights, reflex sights, lots of automatic weapons.

They can make the trailer look as bombastic as they want, shooting crappy guns via iron sights is no fun for me.

I guess I'm just ready for something different from all those advanced options.  If nothing else it would be nice to see what can be done with a setting like WW1 as a FPS game in 2016.  We won't lack in other FPS's with a more modern theme.  I half expected this game to be more like SteamPunk WW1 but you say no alternate history so I'm curious as to it's direction.

Some posters on reddit have pointed to the controllers as the culprit for poor wifi performance.  Nobody has any idea on why that would be the case unless they interfere at 2.4ghz.  i've since connected my PC to the 5ghz band on my router and will see it that makes a difference.  I can also plug an ethernet cable directly into the PC as well and see if that has an effect.  So tonight I think I'll look at Budget Cuts and The Gallery plus some more AudioShield.
37  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: So VR on: May 05, 2016, 03:02:32 AM
Just finished watching the Foo Show with Will Smith (from Tested) and that has potential as well, kind of a talk show that you can sit in on.  Hard to describe but I will download each episode when they appear.  They only have the one episode so far with others promised for this summer.

Shon, have you tried HoloBall?  I've enjoyed it but worry about my low hanging ceiling fan/light.  Holoball is like handball or Pong where you hit a ball at a wall in the distance and an AI robot tries to block it and hit it back past you, if the ball gets past you or the AI a point is scored.  I can see getting lost in the game and forgetting about the light/fan above me while trying to smash the ball back at the AI.

While I don't recommend it I'd be curious about your impressions of Windlands if you get it (again I don't recommend it as a must have) and the movement system and VR sickness.  Nothing I've played yet has bothered me except Windlands and that wasn't too bad but I didn't play for very long.

One thing I haven't figured out is why SteamVR seems to be taking up some of my bandwidth when active.  I was trying to watch a live stream off the web in the Virtual Desktop program and couldn't get a smooth video playback at all due to low download speeds but the second I turned SteamVR off the connection sped up to my normal value.  None of the resource monitors I brought up showed excess downloads happening so who knows what is up.
38  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: So VR on: May 05, 2016, 01:23:57 AM
Well I can only talk about my own experience as a first time VR user.  I see clearly what looks like a screen door when I put the headset on, I cannot believe it would be anything other that which others call the screen door effect.  Now I don't notice it once I get going in games and such but it is there.

Thanks for the impressions Shon, I'm glad I decided on the Vive with the controllers at this point.  I like Audioshield as well,  I tried a classical song I had in my iTunes library and that was the best experience for me along with some Queen and Pink.  I bailed out during a reggae song as the orbs just kept coming fast and I got tired.
39  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: So VR on: May 03, 2016, 08:32:11 PM
Finished Vanishing Realms and enjoyed it quite a bit, again you can see the potential for the medium with VR but like most current offerings it is short (2 hrs or so with more content promised).  I booted up Windlands and hooboy that is one to be careful with.  My first experience with movement via the controller (others I've played use a teleport mechanic) and it can throw you for a loop.  The game about using a hook shot to swing between trees and get to remote areas but you start off without your hook and have to move on the ground and jump using the controller to move just like in a non-VR game but in VR it can be disorienting.  Once you get the hooks you will still have sections where you need to move via the controller so I'm sure that is why they start you out like that but man it will probably make people sick, I have a little bit of a headache after playing for 20 minutes and will explore more games before I go back to this one.  This may work better on the Rift in a seated environment and a standard controller but standing up and using the Vive wands can get you unbalanced easily.

People have been talking up HoloBall so I will try that next (after I take my daily long walk).  Space Pirate Trainer is also due up soon, lots of good talk about that one.

Almost forgot I tried Audioshield a game that takes a mp3 song and as you listen to the song it throws orbs at you timed to the beat.  The orbs are colored blue for left hand and orange for right and your vive controllers are depicted as shields that you use to block them.  I liked the game based on the two songs I tried with it, Queens' We Will Rock You and Black Sabbath's Iron Man  with Iron Man being a difficult one to get right.  Good fun with it.

War of the Five Kings was what we've seen.  Robb, the Baratheons, Joffrey, and Balon.  Balon lost his sons near a decade prior to the start of the series in his solo rebellion, crushed by Robert, Stannis, and Ned.

And of course Theon was a hostage taken by Ned from Balon.  Also wasn't the man telling Theon's sister that she wasn't the leader yet also another brother of Balon?  I remember there was a strict hard core priest in the books who was Theon's uncle.
