I think what ended my run at NMS was the sameness of the buildings and star bases.  Sitting in the hanger of a star base I'd watch ships fly in and then I'd run over to them to check out what they had for sale.  It was pretty clear early on that there is no real variety to those ships, same pilot name, same inventory and even when two of the same ships were in dock they had the same names and stuff for sale.  Pretty lazy and not fun to experience for any length of time.

Funny enough it was the ships themselves with their random layout for the same model that took away any fun from the game, why would a X-wing looking ship have anywhere from 6 to 24 inventory spaces?  And larger ship models had the same issue, I'd much prefer the ship design dictated what space you had to work with.  Where is the desire to save up to buy one of those cool looking massive ships so you could have inventory space?

Too many locations for my taste, can't get a decent grip on any story

1) The Saviors compound
2) Alexandria
3) Hilltop
4) The Kingdom
5) Oceanside
6) Carol out in her own house
7) Probably missing some place somewhere....

I didn't mind this episode but the ending where Rosita is asking Tara about where to find guns seemed a bit clumsy, why would she think Tara knows where a bunch of guns are?  Why is a female asking this when we know a whole group (coven?  hehe sorry) of women have a stockpile of them?  If Tara knew where guns where why would Rosita think she was hiding that information?

Arise!!!

Seriously is anyone still playing this? Hell, does anyone still even have the game installed? After months of radio silence, the most hated and criticized game since Daikatana just got a massive "foundation" patch that adds a ton of fixes and new features including base building, player purchaseable freighters, new game modes, and numerous interface and graphic improvements. It's the first in what Sean Murray claims is a series of patches to make the game what they envisioned.

To be honest, so many new games have come out since No Man's Sky release, I've moved on from it. That plus the major disappointment I felt after playing the game has made it difficult to be interested again, but I'll probably try it again eventually after they release another patch to fix more bugs and flesh out the new stuff that was added in this latest patch release.

Yep pretty much the same for me, I still have it installed but if I needed disk space it would be the first to go.  I'm not sure if I'll go back to it any time soon.  I'd also say that this patch wouldn't fix any of the issues I had with the game in regards to just playing the game itself, a shallow experience all around.

Yeah that's a pretty neat site for comparisons.  I have a 980Ti and am happy with that, looking at prices it seems the 980Ti's are still pretty expensive when you can get a 1080 for just a little bit more, I figured the 980Ti prices would have dropped after the new cards hit the street.

Loving the new patch that went live yesterday.  I guess there were some hero balance changes but mostly I've been enjoying the 1v1 and 3v3 modes that have been added to the new Arcade mode.  In 1v1 it's first to 5 kills and each round you each play the same random hero (except Mercy and Lucio) on the new map that is much smaller than the standard maps.  It makes you use hero's you never play in regular matches and can be lots of fun.  Everyone I've played against has been pretty nice and the matchmaking seems good as while I've lost most matches they are never 0-5 stomps but 3-5 or 4-5 finals.

3v3 on the same small map is listed as the most popular and you get to pick your hero for the match, I have had one match out of the where a player on my team was salty but overall it's been good.  Blizzard also added some loot boxes to get people to play the new modes, you get one for your first win in 1v1 and one for a win 3v3, in addition after 3 victories in any Arcade mode you get a loot box up to 9 victories and this progression will reset every 7 days.

Lots of fun.

It just seems counter productive to blame the electoral college when it cannot reasonably be changed due to its constitutional protections.

Constitutional protections for who?  Slave owners?   icon_twisted

Some interesting reading:

http://people.uncw.edu/lowery/pls101/wilson_chapter_outlines/The%20Proslavery%20Origins%20of%20the%20Electoral%20College.pdf

As they mention, it is an inherently *undemocratic* system that no other country uses.  Sure there might be some complex system you could come up with to try to appease different factions, but ultimately someone would find something to bitch about, and what could be more truly democratic than having EVERY VOTE COUNT?

You could argue all sorts of different ways about how such a system favors such and such, but the fact is you don't know what would happen, because we've never had this system.  No one can say exactly how it would affect voter turnout, and even what candidates rise to the top.  But there's no doubt it would be a more accurate representation of the true will of the people.

No you read my comment incorrectly, the Electoral College itself has constitutional protection due to it being in the Constitution with no regard to it's original basis for being in there.  While the every vote count thing seems fair it can be brought up time and again we are a Federal government not a Democracy in the traditional sense.

Never say never but I can't see the Electoral College being rescinded since it will need 75% of the states and 66% of the House and Senate to change the system.  In no way would the lower population states prefer to see the system change to a popular vote system no matter how logical or sensible it may seem.   That L.A. times article mentions some states want to send all their votes to the winner of the popular vote but look at the breakdown of this election and all those red states across the country, why would they cede power to the mass population centers?  It is a strange system but we aren't getting anything else anytime soon.

I agree it's not gonna change anytime soon, but it needs to be looked at by *anyone* who feels "disenfranchised".  I read over the weekend over 4 million votes from California hadn't even been counted yet, but were considered "inconsequential" to the outcome.  How can you convince people that their votes actually matter in such a system?  Do I have to move to freaking Ohio (no offense) to have a vote that "counts"?

I'd say yes you do have to move to Ohio for a vote that counts at least for this election cycle.  Swing states never stay the same (Florida seems to come up at lot though, could be the place to go for matter votes) so it's iffy on where to live.  I feel certain that California will remain a strong Democratic bastion for many years and thus while your vote counts it is swamped in a storm of like votes.  It just seems counter productive to blame the electoral college when it cannot reasonably be changed due to its constitutional protections.

I'd like a system of splitting a states electoral votes based on popular vote totals within the state instead of a whole block going to a candidate because 40,000 votes out of several million cast won the state for that party.  I think at least two states do this (Maine maybe?) and it would be a way to readdress the electoral college while still being under the constitution since the states control how electoral votes are cast.

Should also add that the people didn't elect Trump, the electoral college did. The people, at least right now, selected Clinton.
So the message is your vote matters but only if your state has a larger number otherwise why bother.

I would love to see it removed or at the very least changed to reflect the ratio of those that vote vs those that can with a cap that each state can achieve.

Couple of things here, one Clinton won California and New York which are very populous states and it was the smaller middle states that Trump made the difference in.  And two voters did not turn out for Clinton like the projections assumed they would so under your idea it seems Clinton would have come of even worse as the Trump voters were energized to go out and cast their preference.

I loved playing Symmetra both on PC and consoles but when they nerf'ed her along with Torb it really didn't make much sense from what I saw in the game.  Anyways I'll be sure to check out the changes on PTR.

Got oh so close to gold (2000 points) level yesterday.  Highest I got was 1970 so only one match win away (I found I get around 30-40 pts per match win and lose that same amount in a defeat) but the next game of course had a petulant player who didn't like our team comp and after we lost the first point he disconnected so we were 5v6 and destined to lose.  Overwatch is supposed to limit your losses in cases like that but the guy who left must be a first class griefer as he jumped back into the game at the last minute so we lost full exp since we had a full team.  Why he didn't just sit in the spawn location I don't know but I do wish there was a way to avoid those guys in the future, as it is the best I can do is block his comms.

Any ways the quest for gold is underway.  I suppose it is just a goal as I also got into a match that had my team rated 1907 with one gold and 5 silvers and the other team also at 1907 but with 5 golds and one silver.  Our team did manage to eek out the win 3-2 on capture mode but is was nail biting at the finish.
24  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Hell froze over and Blizzard made a new IP] Overwatch on: September 03, 2016, 02:57:18 AM
Season 2 of competitive mode launched today and they added the new map as well.  I did my 10 placement matches and landed about where I figured, silver tier but very close to gold, I'll need to earn 116 rating points to get there (I got 1884 for my placement).  Whole new scoring system in place and players seem to like it.  I went 4-6 W/L and never ran into any salty players but some of the matches were pretty one sided.  In one game the other team managed to pin us into our spawn point and their Hanzo player was far too good for me to be in a match against him.  I guess seeing his name as Smurftatic or something along those lines and being in a 3 man group might be a clue as to why we lost so bad.

New map is very nice but I haven't spawned into it too much yet, the weekly brawl will match you into it though.

A lot of what I read is like this RPS impressions piece on PC version -- that much of the game is screwy and clumsy and poorly designed, that much of the game that sounded exciting to me (space combat) is mediocre at best, that much of the nuts and bolts gaming is tedious unless you're truly into crafting and inventory micro-management. But... that he still can't stop playing it.  icon_smile

Wot I Think: No Manís Sky

Quote
This likely reads as an overwhelmingly negative review, and itís deserved Ė No Manís Sky is massively flawed, and systematically poorly designed. But itís also a massive playground of potential and opportunity, and its sheer ambition, for all its massive stumbles, is rewarded in play.

Itís bloody awful that the whole time Iíve been playing, the dozens of hours on PC this weekend, Iíve been thinking about the PS4 hastily hooked up to the TV at the other side of my office and wishing I were still playing over there.

But I can see the PC version improving come the patches it desperately needs, and I can fantasise about the possible reworkings of the abysmal ship controls and stupid inventories and long mouse presses, and then this version will step forward and take the lead. Itís not there yet, but it could be.
Couple of the comments were interesting too:
Quote
Itís simply by far the worst game Iíve ever loved.
...
I am enjoying it, but I literally fight with the controls to play rather than them being hidden things you forget about once you know them.
So I feel pretty sure it's not for me, at least in its current state. I'll keep it on the wish list though.

The apparently poor use of mouse and drag'n'drop reminds me a lot of the indie cheapie How to Survive. There they couldn't be bothered to convert the gamepad-type inventory management (much of it using shoulder buttons to scroll L-R through inventory items) to the more typical drag'n'drop that virtually every PC-native game uses as a matter of course. I'd like to think in NMS case though, with this volume of sales, the dev can afford to do something about it in this case, if it wants to.

It could be like some other AAA-price titles like Shadows of Mordor and Mad Max where I did get in the water once the title was on sale. NMS has sold so astronomically (inexplicably?) well on both platforms though, that it doesn't sound like Sony would need to put it on sale on Steam any time soon.

That review hits exactly my experience with NMS down to the worst game I love to play.  I don't think I could add anything else.  I am currently on a moderately hostile planet looking for one last animal so I can earn 250k credits and that should be enough to buy a much better ship but I can't find the dang thing no matter how long I search.  I found an item that sells for good money and is plentiful on the planet but finding a selling location is difficult so I end up inventory full very often.  Ahh well I need to find that damn animal so back at it, I could just leave but I have made it my goal to complete this task which should make going to another world fresh.
27  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: No Man's Sky - all procedurally generated everything! on: August 13, 2016, 10:56:18 PM
I'd like the game more if I could spend less time in the interface.  For me the graphics are fine and I can withstand the hitches here and there but I don't like how long it takes to get things done sometimes.  Also I need to master that running hack as often I want to travel somewhere close but running takes too long and so I fly but the animation of getting into the ship, taking off, landing and getting out are too slow and repetitive.  Oh and I have yet to master the star map, I get frustrated when I try to determine where to jump next as you can select any star and there is no indication that it is in range or not and the map view slews around so now I've lost my perspective (I did not take the Atlas path at the start so no path to the center for me) and have to hope I finally click on one in range.
28  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: No Man's Sky - all procedurally generated everything! on: August 13, 2016, 12:23:33 AM
My 980Ti system is bogging down at times with the game, I think it needs more work for sure.

Some UI stuff I don't get either.  When using a terminal to buy/sell stuff I can access both my exosuit and spaceship inventory but when talking to a trader I can only get to my exosuit inventory no matter how close my ship is to me.  Plus I'd love to reduce the timer on the selection buttons, don't see why I need it at all really.

Sorry, but a lot of people buy digital nowadays (especially PC). Don't tout this 'global release' bullcrap in this day and age. Also, (pissed off) PC purchaser here.

Does suck as you need to go into NMS hiding mode to avoid hearing too much about the game but then again you might hear something that turns you away from it.  Hard not to see headlines and stuff about such an anticipated game though.

There is always a segment of gamers who are going to try and be the quickest to the "end" even in a game like this so I'm just wondering what the speedrun time will be.  I don't think I'll play NMS but I wonder what happens at the center of the universe when people get there.  Will you see other players since you are all now in the small space at the center?  If so I'd think speedrunners would love to get there first and name the planets and whatever else there is at the core for bragging rights.

Competitive mode and balance patch out for the XB1 finally smile

From what I've read the Torb nerf is not in yet, just the McCree and Widowmaker ones from the PC version.  I'm not sure I'd want to try ranking in comp play as the torbtornado will be massive.  Not that sure it matters in the end as I imagine my rating will be something like 25 or so.

Otter saw your two invites last night.  My nephew was playing on my account briefly before we started his party.   I'll be on tonight hopefully.  Btw, not sure I want to do season yet.

No worries, we had Pug, Kato and Mikegami playing last night in competitive mode.  I ranked in at 46 and proceeded to lose two levels in the next 3 games but am stable at 44 now.  There was a but (since fixed) that didn't give proper exp for KOTH matches and I think I lost more games where full exp was applied and won a few where I got very little exp.  The last game we played last night was a doozy as we ran into a very skilled group that rolled us like nobodies bussiness.

Great episode but bittersweet knowing how fast the plot is running right now.  I love the action but can't help wondering how much more we are going to get before the end.  Cersei finally removes the dragging plot point that is the High Sparrow and in a great way but suffers consequences as a result, very nice.  I too am disappointed to lose Margery as I always held out hope she'd disrobe again (I'm shallow like that) and I'm still not feeling the King in the North as the answer to the winter problem, good thing Daneyrs is on her way accompanied by some cool music.
