Weird bug while playing the PC version after the 1.04 patch.  Spoiler tags since it relates to story stuff but pretty early on.
Spoiler for Hiden:
There is a question marker just west of Fyke island, it also shows a place of power near the question mark.  When I got there I could tell that both appeared to be underground.  I found the entrance and went in but here is the strange thing.  The whole area was the same area that you fight through with Keria Metz but starting at the end and heading back in.  The cave does not lead anywhere near a place of power or the question mark on the map, it just sends you underground heading west until you reach a wall that you used aard on coming the other way but you cannot break it down from this side.  Had to turn back and head back out. Also strange was that there were several items that showed red on Witcher vision but when I clicked on them the just stopped glowing and never displayed anything.  Probably related to the initial run through the area.  Very strange stuff.  I tried exiting the game and restarting but right now Steam won't start the game, keeps telling me it is preparing to start the game but doesn't do it.

More spoiler for the above spoiler stuff relating to how you get to the area
Spoiler for Hiden:
There is a cave entrance near a boat a bit east of the markers

BTW, is there a way to see how long you've been playing on PS4?  Save files don't indicate anything.   icon_confused

At least on the PC version you can find that on the inventory or character pages, you select player stats (default key C. On PC) and it shows up on the bottom of the next page.  No idea if the PS4 control scheme allows for this but you could take a look.

I remember that tower, I managed to jump up the low cliff side to get up there.  Don't know how to describe where to climb up but it is possible, best I can remember if you are on the road looking at the tower you need to head left to find a way up by jumping.

I'm currently overwhelmed in Velan with stuff all over the map, lots of fun at level 8 so far.  PC has been very stable after the patch and I've gotten the hang of mouse and keyboard controls with the exception of getting the items like the crossbow or torch to equip correctly.  I've found that using the xbone controller is the fastest way to get those items working.

I am surprised at how useful the signs are, I've actually been using my level points to upgrade them instead of focusing on combat abilities.

The Witcher 3 and maybe try the Azure Coast track in Project Cars as it is supposed to be the Monaco GP track where the F1 race is this weekend.

I've had a couple of time when it stopped responding on my PC but I didn't lose much progress, I hope the patch can fix some of that.  Looks great though.
7  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / I had one job! on: May 21, 2015, 06:34:04 PM
Well really 3 but that doesn't parse well.  Way back in 1977 I worked as a stock/delivery boy for the local liquor store, that lasted a year until job two came along.  Job two was a six year stint in the Navy (1978-1984) as a Engineering Laboratory Technician doing chemistry control and radiation survey work on their nuclear reactors. I spent two years on the USS South Carolina (CGN-37) and two years on the USS Carl Vinson (CVN-70).  I was in Nuclear Power School when Three Mile Island happened.  Job three is/was being a Shift Chemistry and Radiation Protection Technician (nickname ShiftCARP) at the Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant for the last 31 years and while I had the skills and knowledge to move up the chain into management I turned away from that path of madness and remained in the same job from August 27th 1984 until tonight when I go in for my final shift and head off into retirement.  It does feel weird that all the skills and knowledge I've accumulated over the past three decades is being left behind but I don't like the direction the department is heading anyways so like I tell my co-workers, don't wish me luck as I feel you need it more than I do.  I do have the ability to do contract work for the company if I want to or feel like I need money but I'm hoping I don't ever go back.

I'm lucky to have had a job that paid enough to allow me to pay off my house and save sufficient monies to leave at age 55 and I get a defined benefit pension until I kick off.  Many people think I'm crazy for leaving at 55 but it seems so few people anymore even get a chance at it and truth be told I'm burning out on some of the intense hours and stringent program requirements .  Immediate plans consist of The Witcher 3 and riding my Moto Guzzi around the West Coast until this fall when I'll point the bike south and head off to South America with designs of making it to the very tip of the continent.

So it's almost time to pack the bag and head to work where people I don't really know will wax poetic about my departure over cake and then I'll be able to head over to the ShiftCARP desk and take the watch one last time until midnight PST when I get relieved and go home, sounds good to me.

Yeah that last scene was a fantastic cliffhanger!  The whole episode was pretty cool and action packed, well worth the wait.

But to Turtle's comment, I'm not sure where you are getting the idea that the ratings for the show are good.  I just looked at the ratings this morning and last week's ep was around 4 million.  Considering that was the lead-out from Avengers, I was expecting a lot more.

But there was no compelling reason for people to watch Avengers and then rush back to Agents of Shield. Not like with The Winter Soldier, which made a lot of people (myself included) go back and start watching the show again. If anything I would expect ratings to drop as AoS viewers wait to see Avengers in the theater before coming back to finish the last two episodes.

That is exactly what happened to me, didn't want to spoil any Avengers stuff with AoS (turns out not much would have been given away, kinda disappointed there wasn't more AoS in Avengers).  Did like the last scene, nice setup for next season and good overall season for me.

Well CDPR knew what they had I guess, it is nice to see a game reviewed a week before release.  Steam version already bought via gift cards (work gave me $50 in Best Buy cards for my usual exemplary work 😎) so we shall see how a i5 with GTX680 performs.

I really wish they hadn't gone with the manga/anime style characters.  That's a huge turn off for me, to the point where I would avoid it altogether.

My thoughts exactly.  I'll wait and see how the game progresses and jump in if it looks good upon release.

Another reason to celebrate might be that a DRM free game has gotten so many pre-orders when it appears that it would be very easy to just pirate the game.  So kudos to CDRP for making the game less onerous to the actual legal gamer.  With over a million pre-orders it seems there is a market for the AAA games of this size and we can hopefully expect to see them move on to either the Witcher 4 or another IP with a large budget.

And before anyone throws themselves into the defense of preorders right now, ask yourselves this: What products beyond games do you buy before they are done and tested, based on the creator's controlled marketing efforts alone? Movies? Nope. You get reviews of those first. Physical goods? Please.

Umm the Apple watch?  Or any new Apple product really and they are much more expensive than a game.  And yes I'm part of The Witcher III million gamer march.

Apple fans are in a class of their own though, and have always been. I'll never understand it. It's more like a religion than capitalism.

Lol, In the past I would have thumbs up this comment.   When I switched, on a whim from an android phone to a 4s 3 or so years ago I simply can't.   There is nothing religious about it, we, me, just simply find it superior.  The apps are getting better though, so that gap is also improving.  To each their own is a true statement, but apple fans being a religion and all that blah blah is asinine.

But in the context of preordering conversations it is totally fair to bring up their market.  They deliver good stuff but if you want it on release day you had better jump in before any real reviews are out.

The latest Call of Duty, I had reservations about getting it but wanted to do MP with the gang.  I probably played 3 matches and just stopped, didn't like the map look, felt I died as soon as I saw someone, didn't like the new movement options, lag seemed bad, game moved far to quick for me etc..  I suppose I could go back and play the campaign but really don't have the desire to do that either.  I'd say no more FPS's for me but who knows, I did like the Destiny MP game play. Another factor in dropping CoD so quickly is that I was having fun with Sunset Overdrive at the time and would rather do that then be frustrated with the speed of CoD.

I spread our retirement money amongst an assortment of low-fee index funds that range in risk levels. Nothing exciting, they just reliably track the overall market. I also have a small Roth that's earning an anemic 0.75% in a mutual fund. That's my safe savings. In another 18 months I'll be old enough to tap that money without tax penalty, should I need it.

Once a year I rebalance the funds based on the previous year's performance. I just spent an hour doing that in February when my wife's employer announced that they are changing their basket of core funds and undoing all the choices I just made. For some reason they decided to move my four most aggressive funds (biotech, software, medicine, and transportation) into a boring conservative target date fund. That means I'll have to rebalance again after the dust settles in June. The sector funds are volatile and expensive, but the biotech returned 34% last year. Hard to walk away from that even though I know the smart thing is to take the profit and run.

Speaking of which, has anybody mentioned target date funds yet? That's the simplest and safest way to invest for the long haul. The fund manager rebalances its portfolio to make it more and more conservative as your retirement date approaches. Now that we're just 9 years from retirement I steer a little more money each year out of the growth funds and into the target date.

Fidelity seems to push them for our 401k plan, I haven't looked at their performance yet but may transfer some assets into one.  I should have rebalanced more often as one fund I own has been underperforming lately but I didn't catch it in a timely manner, it wasn't losing money but not rising as well as I expected it to.

Best of luck Ron!

First is a Fidelity Large Company fund

And here is a Fidelity Small Company fund

performance between the index funds is pretty close.

I am actually doing an analysis paper on AAPL for a finance class right now. I want to put some money into it because their numbers are great, but it seems expensive right now. That's always my problem though, I struggle with the when to enter more than anything else.

It can be very hard to convince yourself that the time is right to invest but you have to take the long view and historicaly the market will rise hence why I buy index funds and hold them.  A coworker whose wife also made good money paid off his house years ago so has earnings that are not needed for day to day expenses,  he keeps this money in a bank savings account because he can't make himself buy stocks believing the next crash is right around the corner.  His 401k also is far behind mine because he put all his into the so called chicken fund that has a low but guaranteed retun rate (probably less than 3% annual) while mine dropped steeply in 2008 but recovered in a few years and is doing fine now.  Of course there are no guarantees in life so you have to decide for yourself what your risk tolerance is.

I buy and hold index funds.  These funds track the market pretty closely and have very low expense ratios.  I read about them many years ago on The Motley Fool website and it has worked well for me.  I don't research individual stocks at all, no time or patience.  I compared my 401k holdings with a coworker who does like to study and trade the markets and we actually have pretty much the same assets having started the accounts about the same time.

I'm not so sure you can have NPC helpers, most likely it was another player who joined in to help you.  Nice to get past the BSB though, that took me awhile until I used the cocktails to distract him.

After checking around I decided to try the 64 Gig Oneplus One phone for $349 unlocked.  Most reviews seemed positive and the price is right.  Reading about the ordering process almost put me off as they require an invite to order the phone.  Recently they decided to add open orders on Tuesday as well but I went to the forums and found out you can pretty much get an invite just by asking in the invite thread.  I did so and got a invite code within 5 minutes (well after asking a followup question as my request got overlooked at first).  I did have to pay via paypal but I didn't mind that at all.  Now to figure out which plan to sign onto.

I'll be retiring from work soon and so will lose the company cell phone.  Need to study up on phones and plans and such not so does anyone have favorite sites to visit for this type of info.  Since I plan on traveling into Latin America and elsewhere I'd think an unlocked phone might be the ticket but I'm really unsure of all the options.  Currently the company phone gets very little use other than has a means to check work emails and light internet browsing.  My phone might take on larger duties in that I want to be able to look at road maps of where I'm at even if it is not in North America.

Picked this up after becoming obsessed watching streams on Twitch.

Loving it so far - started last night- but I'm dying all the freaking time. I haven't even made it to the first boss w/o dying yet. I've managed to kill everyone around the first bonfire in the street and then proceeded to die to the beast beating on the gate past the bonfire... sigh. Now I don't have any blood vials left and hardly any are dropping. Obviously I've not mastered the basic mechanics of the game since I can't kill the 'normal' mobs, let alone mini-bosses.

Any advice on getting solo mobs pulled rather than 3-4 at a time? That's what kills me - getting mobbed.
Pebbles should pull one guy at a time.  Also watch for their patrol routes.

The big guys with the bricks are easy to gun parry, and usually drop 2 vials.  Try to get the shortcut to the lantern unlocked, and it's a quick run eventually to either boss in the starting area, as well as to two of those brick guys and a wheelchair guy that you can farm for vials and bullets. Early phase of the game is getting comfortable with the flow of combat, the gun parry, dodges, your weapon's moveset and range etc.

Spent a little more time over lunch and started using pebbles. Right now just farming for blood echoes & blood vials - return to Hunter's dream and purchase what I can. Almost back to 14 Blood vials. Hopefully I'll be able to push further tonight. Thanks for the tips.

In the beginning I found dodging the big beast's attack was easier for me vice trying to do the gun stagger.  He will swing and if you dodge you will have time to hit him a few times before he recovers.  Stick and move stick and move!

I seem to be stuck in a corner with no way out, was exploring the area and went into a corner looking for stuff and now I can't get out.  It is a small triangular area and I can't walk, roll or jump out.  I tried using various weapon attack animations to see if that might help but no go.  I've killed all the mobs in the area so they won't come over and kill me.  I have 9 molotov's that I might be able to kill myself with in order to respawn.  Only have 2200 echos on me so it won't be too bad and I might get them back.  If the Molotov doesn't work I think I'll be SoL here.

Well just tried the Molotov and it won't damage me so I don't know what I can do here, try and restart I guess and hope for the best.

Well I am not as good as most at this game but the second boss is down!!! spoilers for my method
Spoiler for Hiden:
Started with the axe in two hand mode and positioned myself between Father G and tombstones.  The heavy charge up attack allowed me to spin towards him and even if the first swing didn't hit the second would.  Cue doing this over and over until the second phase starts.  I switched to the kirkhammer in two hand mode and used a girly circle run up the stairs and down the gap in the fencing to create space when I needed to heal.  I then would wait near the top of the stairs until he jump attacked me, I'd dodge, swing the hammer to stun him, get a couple of more hits in if possible then run.  Rinse repeat until dead.  In the end I had no healing left so it was a close thing at the finish.

Still stuck on the first two bosses, I think my locking the camera on the bridge boss caused me to die due to poor camera positioning.  I'm in the process of farming up blood vials and echos to try again, not sure what level I'm at now but still can't upgrade weapons which I figure is locked until I get past at least one of these two.  Father G seemed doable but I ran out of vials and he moves so fast, got him down to half on first try.  Maybe we need to come up with a MP password for GT'ers if we are playing at the same time and want to co-op.  I put forth Gtrend as an option for the password.

Nevermind misread at first.

You need an item before you can upgrade weapons.  Cleric Beast I think is easier to tackle first, what was your starting weapon?

I started with the Hunter Axe and found a Saw Spear but I don't like it too much, low dmg.  I think I need to buy lots of molotov's and upgrade my endurance so I can swing and dodge a bit more.  One thing I might change is to not use the two hand version of the axe so much, uses lots of endurance but then again I don't like having to get so close to the beast to hit it with the one hand version.

Use the axe one handed.  You should be able to trade some blows with him and come out ahead with regain.

Just got him, one handed was the right choice and I managed to stagger him three times with molotov's which helped with the damage.  Whew, onward!

I really love the From level design, even though I'm struggling with the two bossed I've managed to open shortcuts that make the run back fairly quick.
