Yeah the system takes a long time...and then there are still sometimes hickups.  I wish you the best of luck, and glad to hear that you've got it smile  We had to fight for my son's disability for a long time for some benefits - and right now, we are still ending up paying a crap load out of our own pocket.  But you have to look at life, and how precious it is....and have to be glad for all the little things smile

I don't understand why this wasn't an issue during the heyday of Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, etc. though?

My thought is that the studios were still racking in (a lot of) money from video sales.  As people started understanding that DVDs production costs are actually very low, I think the consumer started demanding lower DVD costs.  And now the expectation for making money on DVD sales are much less - and getting tighter still.  But it is a "radical" idea to think that a 28 day window will help sales.  IMO it wont - the studios need to figure out how to embrace digital distribution.

I'm happy with Blockbuster.  But if Netflix improves their online on-demand selection, it might be worth considering.  I don't see the 28 days as being that much of a concession, seeing at what my movie queue looks like and that even with new movies (when I was with netflix) took a while to get anyways.

The used to have a free trial...and I used it.  It was OK, but I didn't end up using them.  If you don't have any other source or recommendation, then it would be a good place to find folks (as Kevin stated).  Angie's list got popular with NPR.

My experience was with looking for a carpet installer and painter.  I looked and talked to a few of the folks on Angie's list, but ended up with a small list of master carpet installer from a recommendation of the wholesale carpet place.  Went with one.  Same with the painter - asked the local Dunn Edwards paint store for recommendations.

OK...after putting about 4 hours into gaming in this, its still pretty awesome smile

I have been using Darkplaces and the Rygel texture files -and it looks and plays great.  Its bringing me back to just mindless shooting.  I don't like the "secret" rooms concept they put in here.  I like the ones that you find by going in water, under a bridge, etc...but never understood the ones where you have to shoot different parts of a wall/column or push a sequence of buttons to make a door waaay back near where you started open up.  But overall, its a great nostalgia play.

Just a tip on using the Rygel file (for future reference for folks).  There's two types, a hi-res version which is about 900MB and the ultra hi-res which is about 2.7GB.  They both look great (obviously the ultra ones are better), but the ultra hi-res (probably due to its size) is slooow to load.  So switching between levels has a long pause whereas the hi-res ones are pretty much instant.

So enjoy, happy gaming!

Ah. Reading is fundamental.

Right now I use Vonage for my landline, and I only have a landline for calls to my parents in Canada. Wish there was a cheaper way to handle this --- at which point I'd get rid of the landline completely.

Why do you need a landline to call your parents?  I have Vonage and use it to call everywhere, including Canada.  Also, as soon as your contract is up, just jailbreak the iphone.  I was surprised that my coverage (when I'm up in Seattle) is better than a friend of mine with a similar iPhone only he's on ATT and I'm on T-Mo.

I'm confused about where I stand with my AMD 6000+ (dual core 3ghz) in today's gaming. I loaded up Red Faction Guerilla, turned the settings to medium, and I was still getting a lot of chop during big building demolitions. Is the culprit by CPU or my 4850?

In the case for Red Faction Guerilla I'd had the same issues using a quad 2.4ghz system with a Radeon 4890. I think for that game its a case of a crappy port job(done by some 3rd party not the guys who made the game).

I picked it up on Steam...haven't played it yet, but there are a couple of suggestion.  Try playing the game in windowed mode (same resolution, just windowed) and also try turning AA off.  I would try turning AA off and play in fullscreen first, see if that works/helps.  Then if it doesn't try the windowed mode.

So I bought the Super ID pack from the Steam sale...went to play Quake One...and yeah it sucked.  The graphics are just not that great playing on my 20" LCD monitor.  So I was going to delete it...then I looked at the Steam Forum and they recommended a few tweaks to better the graphics/interface.  So I ended up using a program called "Darkplaces" Found HERE.

OMG, what a difference.  I've been playing this for the past hour and its a blast.  Just unzip the files directly into the quake directory, and start up the darkplaces.exe file.  The graphics were better and it had mouselook (like a modern FPS game! - just go into console and type +mlook).  It makes this game very playable.

Anyone tried this?  Its been YEARS since I've played Quake, and this game is just plain fun!

I'm am now going to try to add some higher level texture to get something like this, using the 2.7GB Ultra Hi-Res Rygel file.

Jesus, I had forgotten how terrible toothaches are.  I can't concentrate on anything for more than 5 minutes because the pain is so awful.  Neither the ice packs, Oragel, the 800 MG Ibuprofen (leftovers from some perscription or another), or Extra Strength Tylenol I've tried has even put a dent in the pain yet.  I'm really hoping the dentist will be able to see me sometime tomorrow, although I'm not sure how on earth I'm going to swing it with work, since I had to take 2 days off prior to Christmas break due to the flu.

Whatever I did to deserve this hit to my karma, I'm really, really freaking sorry.  In the last 3 weeks, I've had to put in a new furnace, both cars broke down, I had the worst flu I've had in probably a decade, and now this tooth issue.  Seriously...what the hell?

Think of it this way...you're getting all the bad karma at once and now it will swing back to the good side for a nice long time.  Hang in there.  I've had a lot of root canals, mainly because I tend to get root problems and/or lots of drilling because my teeth tend to get cavities quickly.  Take the pills if you need to, as Eightball said...and do something to take your mind completely off it.

Heard back from Steam support. Their response, in a gist: 'Transaction failed. We're sorry. You can re-purchase the game, but we can't rollback the price.' Lovely, really lovely. So, no 'Mass Effect' for me.  icon_mad

That's ok. They saved me 5 bucks. I'm content playing 'Evil Genius' and 'Civ IV'.

Steam's customer service sucks.
Wow they really do suck. I've never heard anything good when people have to deal with them.  thumbsdown

The funny thing is they sent a message about the transaction failure. My CC wasn't charged. I could've repurchased the game at its sale price if only they would have sent a more concise message right away. Instead, they make you create a whole different Steam support account, so you can ask them a question. You get an answer days later.. and it's total crap.  retard

They do that so they can claim there's nothing they can do about a price after it's been changed back.  So, despite it being their fault that it took days to address the problem, you get screwed.

After the "purchase" - did Mass Effect show up on your game list?  And then they took it away?

Why, what's up with the Steam forum?  I haven't even looked at it.

I wanted to try Space Siege when I saw it in Walmart last year, for like $30!  I read the reviews and couldn't see paying that much for it.  I figured $5 bucks is worth it though and if it sucks, I won't be out too bad.

I was also thinking about getting The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition and Lucidity?  I remember playing the original Monkey Island back in the day and loving it!

Not trying to scare you...I loved the Space Siege demo - but there were a lot of cases having crashes, so I thought best to stay away from it.  But at $4.99 (its still that price) - I am very very tempted still.  As for Painkiller - there's a lot of complaints of CD Keys being used already.  Apparently there are websites that generate legitimate painkiller cd keys.

Now, for Secret of Monkey Island - I bought that on sale earlier in the year.  I still like it smile  Plus this version is completely redone, and the music is nicely re-mastered.
