45  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: the Apple iPad/ iSlate / iThingie? on: January 28, 2010, 05:18:30 AM
rittchard, couldn't agree more.  Hence why I think I'm in for two smile

I think that I and my wife are the target market for this.  I think they would be perfect surf the web from bed.  Great for when you just want something to quickly do email.  With iWork in there, I could even do some light work with it!  1.5lb might be heavy, but it sure beats the weight on my macbook or the dell laptop from work!  I'm tempted to also get rid of my kindle now, since I can use the kindle app on this thing smile
46  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: the Apple iPad/ iSlate / iThingie? on: January 28, 2010, 04:37:52 AM
Surprisingly...my wife asked me about this thing.  It looks like I'm going to be on the waiting list as well.  I might be buying two of this thing.  I think part of the appeal will be with people that have used the iphone, and find the interface pretty good for what they are looking to do (web browsing, email, etc).  My wife (thanks to Ron's iPhone influence over me) loves the iphone, and I think from seeing the news report thinks that she can use this thing.  Right now she has a laptop, and I think she can picture herself using this to browse the web and answer email without having to lug a laptop around.  I think Apple's going to do well with this product, no matter what engadget or others say.

I can't support this...like morlac, I travel - and so I have stretches of no internet.  That would be throwing money away for a game I can't even play/enjoy.  And yes, the pirates will not have any problem with this and will find a "workaround" - they are just punishing those that bought the game.

I'm running Vista Ultimate....its been stable.  I was lucky in that the machine I have it on actually supports it pretty well.  I've had very minimal crashes (maybe 2 in the past 8 months).  Games seem work fine on it, and it supports/does everything pretty well.  In my experience, machines that didn't have the memory, CPU or graphics card didn't do well with it - Went through a laptop and another desktop that couldn't handle it well.  Games seem to work OK, and haven't run into any major problems.

So is there any reason I would want to upgrade at this point?

Are you using a 64-bit version of Vista? If not, you might want to consider updating to Windows 7 for that alone, at least if you have more than 2 GB RAM. I have 12 GB RAM in my current computer, something that would have been completely pointless in a 32-bit system. smile

I have Vista Ultimate edition...so yes 64bit.  I am impressed that you have 12GB of RAM!  I don't think I've ever had any system with more than 4GB of RAM...so I'm drooling over 12GB, hehe.  But in all honesty - Vista is a hog, but with the right machine (CPU, memory and decent graphics card) is relatively stable.  Windows 7 (I think) works better because its not a hog.  I think I'm going to wait to get windows 7, towards the end of the year.  Thanks smile

Given his history I expect him to do both.

This is true.  smile

I can't see him wanting to end on a sour note like that though.  It's gotta sting for him the way it ended.

I'd like to see one more time...but I DON'T want to see him waffle.  I think he should do what Kurt Warner does - which is seclude himself, think/talk through with his family...and then come out with his decision.  Don't make organization or fans suffer.

Also, will I be able to use a printer on a home office network with other XP machines?

Is it a network printer?  If it is, its a matter of finding the right drivers for it, then installing it by issuing this command: sudo apt-get install XXXDRIVERXXX.  Or do you mean that you have a printer that is being "shared" by an XP machine on a network?

This printer is connected to the router via a network cable.

OK, so its a network printer...what brand/model is it?

I am using Windows 7 64 bit right now.  I:m wondering whether I shouldnt just take the factory dvd that it came with and reset it to the original condition.  I havent had it that long so it wouldnt be too painful

Did it come with Windows 7 64 bit originally?  Might point to some incompatible driver (video probably).

I am so tempted to buy this game, especially at $10 from Steam.  I just can't justify spending more $$ with all the games I'm struggling to play through right now.  Its a great price and looks just awesome.  I played the demo and loved it, but its competing against all of these games I picked up over the holiday sale.  What do you guys think?  Pick it up for $10 and shelf it for a several months??  And yes the expansion looks awesome too!!!

Does it feel hot?  (underneath it?)  I'm thinking there might be a heat issue.  Maybe there's not enough circulation, some laptops have vents underneath and if you put them on something that doesn't allow for airflow (eg. pillow, bed, etc) it might overheat.  Do you notice the fans kicking on?  I was going to suggest power problem, but its a laptop...so i'm going with heat issues.

72  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Any Excel Gurus out there? on: January 10, 2010, 03:40:27 AM
I don't have excel pulled up right now, but basically you want a combination of vlookup and calculation.  Vlookup to find the match and bring back the value of the number of items received for the PO# and then do a calculation to find the difference.

Take a look at: http://www.contextures.com/xlFunctions02.html
It should give you pretty much everything you need.  Let me know if you still need help doing this, I can pop on a machine with Excel.

Yes to all those question smile  I buy some stuff from iTunes, but also before I had an ipod, I had a TON of MP3 from a Creative Jukebox I had.  iTunes took it in, and then I sync'd it to the ipod.  Movies, I rip my own and convert it to the ipod or iphone format.  So far no problems here smile

So how big is the Quake folder all told?

For the Hi-res file its 978mb and with the ultra its about 2.72GB.  The Quake folder with Darkplaces copied in it is 81MB.  Pretty small.

So, all told, under 1GB or under 3GB.

yes...the 978mb and 2.72gb include the quake and darkplaces files smile  Enjoy!

Mouselook - my bad...I loaded up Quake from steam (no Darkplaces) and by default it didn't have it.  Go to the console by hitting the "~" or "`" key (can't tell exactly from my keyboard, but its the one underneath ESC).  Then type in there "+mlook" - hit the key again, and mouselook is there.  I just never loaded up this version again, after I started playing with Darkplaces.  Its a fun game to load up and just play, and since its pretty system light - I can tab out of it, and go work on my "spreadsheet" without a problem.  haha!

And in regards to the...ah...brown water.  It looks brown from up on top, then when you swim in it, its pretty clear. LOL.
