I have purchased both seasons on BluRay.  But I wouldn't hesitate to watch season 3 episodes obtained off the back of a truck or otherwise.

HBO offers their Go service in other countries without requiring a cable subscription.  When they offer it here, I will sign up for it to give them my money.  But I am not going to sign up for basic cable and HBO both to view the episodes.  I don't feel that twelve episodes of viewing is worth $150-200 to view them.

Even if they did, you'd be paying $150-200 to view them.  If you get HBO with a subscription to cable, it's $15/month.  I'm absolutely convinced that if HBO to Go ever goes 'without cable' that it'll be $15-20 a month.

Slightly different viewpoint on piracy of media in general. As an author, I am not bothered in the least by anyone pirating one of my novels or audiobooks. I figure that if someone downloads it for free they had no intention of ever buying it in the first place. Last year I sold a hair over 20K books and a quick search turns up my books on torrent sites, websites, usenet, ... I just don't care if it was downloaded another 5k or even 10K more times by pirates, chances are a few of them may enjoy one of my works and buy one, or at least tell a friend about them.

This is something I've held for years when people bring up the piracy argument about games/software, especially when a company says, "We lost $XXX to piracy".  I remain strongly convinced that the vast majority of people who pirate do so because it's something they can do easily.  They weren't going to buy it anyway.  Happily though, I haven't heard that particular argument in a while.
83  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Let's talk about piracy. on: April 13, 2013, 03:14:09 AM
I used to be fairly big with piracy.    We're talking 10-15 years ago here.  PC and console games, music, movies, TV shows....it didn't matter.  This was the Napster years, and a lot of it honestly revolved around 1) how easy it was 2) how little relative money I had and 3) how victimless it seemed at the time.

I haven't pirated a console or PC game in probably about 5-10 years.  Insane sales and digital distribution have made it stupid to bother with piracy.  I rarely pay more than $20 for a game, so why pirate it when it'll be that $20 in a few months?

Music I tend to buy now unless I can't get it digitally (which is very rare), and even then I usually end up buying it.

TV shows .... I'm a bit different on.  I have cable and DVR, so if it's something that I can record, I absolutely do (Note:  I don't have an HBO subscription).

However, if my cable company doesn't have the HD channel (BBC America, hello), I have no problem downloading the show to watch.

I also have no problem downloading Game of Thrones -----BUT, I also preorder the seasons.

I think part of the thinking on /most/ TV shows (not counting pay channels here, btw) is that they're on 'free' TV, and we're just avoiding the commercials and watching it when and how we want -- this doesn't hold as much water as it used to, though, thanks to easy access to DVRs, Hulu, Netflix and the like.

Movies also, I used to download all the time, but over the past 5 years or so I haven't, because I've been buying blu-rays when they're cheap enough.  I do find myself sometimes downloading a movie to watch, though, before buying the DVD.  I can't say why, though, I don't really have a reason behind it.

About the only thing I /really/ download any more is anime, but I still buy box sets of things periodically.

I mean, if you really want to get nuts and bolts about it, any form of copyright infringement is wrong.  However, it's seeming more and more like we, as a society, don't /consider/ it wrong and for a lot of us, it doesn't stop us from actually buying the physical products.

Am I the only person who was pretty amazed with the game right up until the point where I put skyhook through a guy's head?  I know this is a shooter and all, but it seems these guys went with violence for violence's sake.  It honestly soured my impressions of the game.  This is the type of game that could have really done something meaningful if they were going to put that kind of violence in (they minorly address it, from what I hear), but for such a smart game, they really sank into the "murder simulator" mode on this one.

That was about my reaction yes.  We're in the minority, but we're not alone.  There've been stories on Polygon, Kotaku and a few other places also.  Hell, CliffyB is even saying it's overdone, and that's .... saying something.

He was a Pinkerton.   They aren't known for subtlety.

I'm not saying he needs to be subtle.  I'm playing Bioshock 1 right now, and it's just as violent.

However.

Bioshock 1 didn't have heads exploding.  It doesn't have nearly the gore that I experienced in just under 2 hours in Infinite.  I'm not saying there shouldn't be blood.  I'm saying that in Infinite it almost appears that the blood and gore are there just for the sake...of having blood and gore.  It's like they learned lessons on how to do combat from Bulletstorm or something.  *shrug*

I'm not slamming the game, by any means (haven't played enough to do that), but isn't it time that 'mature' meant something more than titillation and gore?

I felt more dread from seeing everyone with the baseballs than I did shooting and dodging.  THAT is the mature experience I want.  Tell me an awesome story, don't drown me in blood to go "Oooh, matuuuuure".

Okay. I'm working on a megamod for Morrowind, and I have it nearly done.  The one thing I don't understand -at all- is merged object lists.

I know the basics, but I don't understand it.  I went and pulled up a partial conflict list from TESTool, but I....don't get it.  At all. It says two mods conflict on an item, but I don't know which one I want, or how it should be ...or anything.  It simply isn't intuitive at all.

My load order is below, and I'll try to upload my conflict lists later tonight.  Any help is very appreciated, and keep in mind, I don't understand shit about how these work.

I've been fine with Steam taking away my ability to sell my PC games because A) the service has worked so well for me, and B) there are so many good sales that I still feel like I'm getting my money's worth. Occasionally I do pay a full $50 or $60 for a Steam game, but that wouldn't be the case if it weren't for A & B.

If Sony can give me A & B, I might be on board.

I'd love Steam (and Sony/MS) to give me the ability to sell my digital licenses to someone else.  There's even a way to do it so that the 'publisher' and developer get paid.  Let's say I have Assassin's Creed 3.  It's still $50+ online, so I want to sell my Steam license for $25.  I sell it, which removes the game from my Steam library (removing the license) and the new person gets it.   Take a percentage off the top (say 20-25%) with a portion going to Steam and a portion going to the publisher/developer.

Sure, they gripe because they're not getting $60 per game 'sold', but that's ignoring the fact that people are generally cheap, and want things as cheaply as possible (one of the reasons for piracy, of course).

I don't see this ever happening, but it would be a glorious day.

A digital only model will not work in the US at this point or anytime in the next 3 years. The reason is simple, there is a large percentage of the US population that don't have access to internet service that is fast enough to make the download option more appealing than the disc based option. Until high speed internet is widely available to most of the population this will not change.

Heck I still don't have a Netflix subscription because I have no way of streaming the service at a fast enough rate.

The one exception for me is Steam. I can put up with Downloading a 20 gig game at 120k per second when the game is 75% off.

Try the next 10-20 or more years.  Until something happens to cause the major cable and phone companies to go nationwide with fiber, we're going to have 'below-average' broadband compared to much of the rest of the developed world.   Hell, they're trying to talk people into usage-based billing, which is all kinds of backwards (considering Australia, the bastion of this, is slowly transitioning AWAY from it).  The companies aren't willing to spend to develop their networks other than in dribs and drabs (DOCSIS 3.0 came out over six years ago, and still isn't available in a large percentage of the country).  Wall Street (investors) applies enormous pressure to keep profit margins high and costs (investments in actually upgrading equipment and networks) low.  It's a very short-sighted view, and they're certainly not interested in changing it.  Nor, apparently, is the government.

C'mon, Google.  Scare the crap out of everyone to push us all forward!
98  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: I need your opinion on whether or not to run a review on: December 28, 2012, 09:15:33 PM
I haven't watched the video (and can't right now, I'm at work), but here is my opinion (for what very little it's worth).

It's AO.  This is bad simply because these games can't ... well, be bought anywhere other than J-List and a few sites like that (yeah, all hentai).

However, I have a personal disbelief in the ESRB in what considers 'M' and 'AO', given the amount of violence that's in our games.  Not that I mind violence, mind you, but I do mind the double-standard in our society as regards sex vs. violence.  A bare boob is horrible, but blowing holes in people, man that's just a-ok with us!

I say use your best judgement, Ron.  Watch as much preview info as you can, and see if it's actually a worthwhile game...or if it's just a cheap grab at a sex-sim.  If it's worthwhile, review it.  If it's a cheap sex-sim thing..meh.

That said, I'd love if the industry (both sides, game making and game reviewing) could have an actual mature way of handling relationships and sex in games without degenerating to 'hurr hurr' behavior like they're thirteen year olds.

Gratch is 100% right on this one.  I bought the packs for the games I wanted as well as the single songs i liked, and I spent about $25.  I'm a happy person now slywink

Where the fuck is the best songs from FF6 and 8 though.

I have almost the opposite problem -- when I open a page, it repeatedly loads it to where the 'back' button is useless.
102  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Researching Buying a Bed on: November 27, 2012, 11:55:59 PM
Okay, so I'm doing more research and I've come up with the following beds I'd like:

Simmons BeautyRest Warrenton Pillow Top:  $1299 at Mattress Firm
Sealy Posturepedic Irresistible EPT:
Tempurpedic Cloud Luxe:  $3249 at Mattress Firm
Hampton Rhodes (Fuzzy Photo, 3 words), something 'Pillow Top

Where else should I look for beds?  Id really love the Tempurpedic but there's no way I can float $3k.

Also, I want to get a bed frame, preferably one that goes to the floor.   I found Ikea at about $200-250, any other ideas?

Still, got the Sleeping Dogs DLC and Civ 5 Expansion for about $12. smile

My backlog is so immense I'm self-imposing a $20 rule.  I stay pretty close to it, usually.  The last 2 games I spent more than this on are Guild Wars 2 and Borderlands 2 (both of which I'm playing right now).  I may spend $25 for Dishonored on Friday but everything else will be $20 or less.

Yes.  Yes it was.

I'm honestly hoping that the Texans feel embarrassed and pissed off....and take it out on the Ravens.

Anyone play this?  I need tips on a few things involving Magic, including how to build a deck.  I'm doing the newbie thing right now but any assistance is welcome.  I haven't played in about fifteen years.

I'm looking at buying a queen-sized bed early next year.  I need something relatively soft (a test at a Sleep Number store puts me at about a 40), but I don't want to spend a ton of money.  I'm looking in the $800-1200 range.

Anyone have any good places for me to start?
114  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: NFL 2012 -- Week 5 on: October 10, 2012, 05:21:48 PM
Compared to last year?

No.  No we're not.

Everyone on our schedule is very beatable with the stiffest challenges being the Packers (at home, very beatable), the Ravens (also at home and also very beatable since they only scored 6 against KC) and the Patriots (at NE, going to be very tough).
115  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: [Movie] Looper on: October 08, 2012, 04:24:42 PM
The problem with time travel is that most people try to view it as one timeline.  The moment someone travels back in time, they create a new timeline (Marvel was always really good about that one).  So you have the 'main timeline' which is in the present.  Then you have Alternate Timeline A with
Spoiler for Hiden:
old Seth, where Seth finishes out his contract and lives 30 years before going back in time
and then Alternate Timeline A2 where
Spoiler for Hiden:
Joe finishes out his contract and comes back in time to stop the kid from becoming the Rainmaker.  Also, this could ALSO be Alternate Timeline A because it's entirely possible that old Seth and old Joe could be from the same timeline.

Then you have Alternate Timeline C (Seth is mutilated, Joe doesn't kill himself) and Alternate Timeline D (Seth is mutilated, Joe kills himself).  At the end of the movie, we're on track to Alternate Timeline D (now the true timeline), and Timelines A-C become just that -- failed alternates.

Don't you love time travel?

Well, let's see.

Things Romney has said he's going to try to push if elected:

From (http://www.politifact.com/personalities/mitt-romney/statements/)

Remove the American Opportunity Tax Credit for college tuition:  http://www.politifact.com/new-hampshire/statements/2012/aug/31/barack-obama/romneyryan-budget-would-be-end-road-american-oppor/
Remove the tax credit for wind producers (alternative energy):  http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2012/aug/14/barack-obama/obama-says-romney-would-end-wind-power-tax-credits/
End Planned Parenthood:  http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2012/aug/08/barack-obama/obama-slams-romney-on-contraception-and-planned-pa/
Veto the DREAM act:  http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2012/jun/22/david-plouffe/mitt-romney-said-he-would-veto-dream-act-says-davi/
Proposes a $250,000 tax credit for millionaires:  http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2012/may/08/barack-obama/barack-obama-says-mitt-romneys-tax-plan-gives-mill/
Deregulate the telecommunications industry, oppose Net Neutrality and sell off the wireless spectrum (More GOP than Romney admittedly):  http://stopthecap.com/2012/08/29/gop-platform-deregulate-everything-telecom-oppose-net-neutrality-sell-off-spectrum/

There's also the fact that he's continuously flip-flopping on things, sometimes in as short a span as 96 hours (Obama is for redistribution of wealth, that's bad! to My welfare plan includes lower-income paying less while higher-income paying more! -- which is a definition of redistribution)

I'm not saying Obama is perfect.  I will say, though, that I don't trust Romney as far as I can throw a tank.   Obama only a little more.

What, no Revis?

What, no Santonio Holmes?

What, you can't stop the run?

What, your offensive line has more holes than a block of swiss?

I love watching the Texans this year.  I mean, I know we haven't /really/ had a tough game yet (and likely won't until....the Packers?  the Jets were always tough on us, but now with Sanchez playing horribly and Revis gone for the season?).

It's almost like I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop.  And not wanting to jinx it.

GO TEXANS.

I got the first and second box set.....and then they screwed us.  I've never been able to get the last two box sets, so I'm stuck with half a box set that I can't do anything with.  :/

Now you know how those of us who went with the Harry Potter Ultimate BDs feel.  Fuck you, Warner Brothers.
