3162  Non-Gaming / Trading Forum / Cheap basic sound card needed on: October 26, 2004, 06:42:14 PM
I recently upgraded my mother's computer, but for some reason I can't get the onboard sound to work.  No bangs, no nothing, but no sound either.  I verified that the speakers work, and tried updating the drivers, to no avail.

So I'm checking here to see if anyone has a very basic sound card that's supported in Windows XP that I could buy or trade from them.  Needs to be a PCI card, natch.

Lemme know, folks:)

I'm in no hurry. smile

3165  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / DVD burning questions on: October 25, 2004, 05:23:13 PM
I haven't installed any firmware in the Apex, haven't really -had- to.  I had a DVD-R someone else burned, and it played, but skipped from time to time, and took about 5 minutes to load.

As far as the encoding, most of the files were mpgs, a few were divx/xvid.

I'm told that 2x the video time for authoring/converting is normal.
3166  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / DVD burning questions on: October 25, 2004, 03:48:51 AM
I did not use DVD-VR.  I did use a DVD+RW disk, which Nerd Out says my player (Apex 1110-W) should be able to play.  And it -did- play it, although without sound.  And yeah, I had AC-3 enabled for the sound choice.

Yeah, it took 9 hours to encode/burn. smile
3167  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / DVD burning questions on: October 25, 2004, 02:08:01 AM
I just got a new DVD+-R drive, and was trying to burn some music videos to DVD.  I used Nero Vision Express 2, and set it up, spent 9 hours burning it (4 hours of video), and put it in my set top DVD plays, but no sound.  On my PC, it plays just fine.

Also, with NVE2, I tell it to burn it again, and it dosen't use -or- delete the temp files created, just tells me I'm out of room.

any ideas on either of these issues, or a better set of programs and instructions on how to convert video to DVD format, author, burn, et al?

Quote from: "Jeff Jones"
Ok, got some questions for ya to start:

1. there's no beep codes. what does happen? do you get the "no video signal" msg on your monitor, or just a black screen?

Just a black screen.

2. you say "Second, as soon as I hit the switch on the power supply, the computer starts up." does this give any different behavior than using the front power switch? (does it progress farther, give a post beep, etc)

No.  Same behavior, but why does it start up when I hit the switch in back, as opposed to the one in front?  Or is this normal for first installation procedure?

Steps and things to check:

1. pull all cables from the motherboard, except the power leads from the PSU. Pull all IDE, SATA, front USB, all of it.
Did that.  In fact, the only thing that -was- connected was memory and processor, and the case speaker / power switch.

2. those tiny cables that control HD LED, Power LED, Reset Switch, etc -- make sure they are all connected properly. (this is my foremost area of suspicion right now)
See above.  By the by, I've always presumed that the writing on the wires (on the connector) was to face the front of the case.  True or false?

3. make certain your motherboard is mounted to the case wall properly, with at least 6 standoffs.
It's got 5, which is all it came with.  The front of the motherboard has 3, the back has 2.  3 corners have one, and the middle of top and bottom sides have one.

4. To the motherboard connect power, and insert your video card (unless it uses on-board video), and insert the RAM.

5. make sure the heatsink/fan is properly affixed to the CPU.

6. connect a mouse, keyboard, monitor cable, and power cable and try to boot up, and see if you get a post beep.

I recommend you don't skip anything, like leaving a HD IDE cable connected.

When you boot this config, examine the following:

1. is the PSU fan spinning?
2. is the CPU fan spinning?
3. is there a light on the motherboard, and is it on?
4. does it get a post beep?
Before I got home, the answers were:  1)  Yes.  2)  yes.  3)  No.  4)  No.  First thing I did after getting home was swapping PSUs.  Now I get beeps.  So I'm going to work on putting it together now.  I'll update with progress. smile  I was also curious if the fact that it was a Sempron processor had anything to do with it, as the mobo case said nothing about Sempron, just Athlon and Duron.  We'll see.  Hopefully it'll work, as it'll save me 4 hours of driving tomorrow.

let me know...
3171  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Motherboard / PSU problems and questions on: October 23, 2004, 02:35:27 PM
I recently bought some parts to put together a b asic computer for my mother.  I got a Sempron 2800+ retail kit, a stick of 512 mb 2700 DDR ram, an ECS motherboard and a case.

After putting it all together, I've got 2 issues.  First, there's no post beeps, or beep codes at all.  Second, as soon as I hit the switch on the power supply, the computer starts up.  I've got the same mobo in my computer, so I know this is unusual.

I'm wondering if I miswired something, if the motherboard's bad, or if the power supply has an issue.

You never know on Beltran.  He's said he'd love to stay in Houston, especially if Houston keeps Berkman and the rest.  MacLane has said he's considering doing what he needs to do to resign Beltran.

Expect Houston to unload a few contracts (Kent, Wade Miller), give Biggio and Bagwell one year contracts, and resign Beltran and give Berkman an extension, and get Clemens for one more year.

Granted, if the Astros win the series, I wouldn't bat an eye at Clemens, Bagwell and Biggio all retiring.

What do you guys think of this is just a brainstorm so this isn't well thought out or in any way condoned or green-lit.

What if we hosted the GG forums as an archive?  We lock that shite software down and just make it a searchable archive so the data isn't lost.  If somebody has a wild hair they could move the data, but it'd be accessable if we could get ahold of the data.

Here is the hitch.  Its 30GB.  We'd need someplace to host it and $$ to pay the cost for access.  If those are donated, its free.  If not, we'll have to beat the support drum.  I'm listening....

I'd say that we don't need most of the forums archived.  We wouldn't really need R&P archived.  The trading stuff, definitely, at least long enough to port it over.  I'd honestly go so far as to say we only need the -important- stuff carted over, and the rest of it can go ... well...where it already went, really.

As far as the other stuff goes, I like the people from GG, and most of what I liked about the forums are here also.  I'll help as I can, clicking on ads, and I've already offered to help with PC gaming news reporting if anyone wants me.  The main thing I request is that we keep the front page active, as that was the big thing wearing down over at GG, from what I kept reading on the forums.  That's nothing against anyone, that's just a fact of life.  And I'm planning on staying, definitely, if it wasn't obvious smile

As with most Wal-mart deals, it's completly YMMV.

SSX 3 is $19.82 at my Wal-Mart.
Metal Arms is $29.82.
Brute Force, Freedom Fighters, and NFS:HP2 are all $19.82.

In fact, the only $15 console games we have other than GBA at my particular Wal-Mart are:  Sphinx (X-Box), and Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone (PS2).
