Also, how does software work for pda's?  Do you download them to your pda via a usb or something?

also, wheres a good site to browse game reviews and recommendations?

2605  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Finished my first marathon today! *Updated with pics* on: January 10, 2005, 08:19:41 PM
as an update i am still very sore today and my foot is still killing me.  i hope to get the camera out to develop my pictures in the next day or so and i'll post some pictures.
and yes Laner the commitment to train for a marathon is tremendous.  actually the hardest part for me during training was the time sink involved when you got to the point of doing runs that took 3 or 4 hours to complete.  my wife and i both hated the time it took on weekends to do those runs when our weekends are devoted to family time. the physical part wasn't too bad when compared to the time commitment.
i know i said last night i won't ever run another but last night lying in bed thinking about the people who raised money for sick children and ran for them was very inspiring.  i guess i should have never said never.

2607  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Finished my first marathon today! *Updated with pics* on: January 10, 2005, 02:26:05 AM
Yep me and my wife both ran and completed the Disney World marathon this morning.  We've both been training for about 6 months and all i gotta say is i'm glad it's over.
During our entire 6 months of training, i never once had an injury or cramps as the result of the strenuous amount of running.  However, (as luck would have it) i actually sprained my foot at mile 16 and developed a bad case of leg cramps at 18 to the point i almost had to stop.
The first 16 miles were a piece of cake and i was coasting thinking i had it made.  Then at 16 without notice i felt a sharp pain in my right foot.  I went on the assumption it was typical muscle aches and pains of a marathon and continued on.  At mile 18 the pain only intensified.  I stopped at the medical tent to apply some biofreeze to my foot hoping it would numb the pain long enough to get to the next station a couple miles along.  Disaster struck when i attempted to start running again both my legs completely locked up.  The first thought that came to my mind was, "I'm finished".  No way did i think i could run 8 more miles not only on a bad foot but with 2 cramped legs.  Thankfully the station i was at had bananas so i downed 2 and rested for a couple minutes to get going again.  Now i was off on what would turn out to be the most torturous thing i could ever imagine doing to my body.
Up until 20 i was in serious pain but i managed to get along.  But at the snap of a finger at 20 i was nearly unable to even walk much less run.  I decided to walk a bit and catch my breath and concentrate on getting to 21 and through the last 5.  Just as i was feeling sorry for myself, a woman jogged by me with a child's picture on her shirt with the qoute, "You think a marathon is tough, try chemotherapy".  Let me tell you thats all the inspiration i needed.  I immediately thought of my little boy and remembered how blessed we are he's healthy and took off jogging again.
To make a long story short, it took 2 hours to run the 5 miles i would normally do in about 55 minutes.  Most of the way it was nearly unbearable pain.  I would imagine it was what it would feel like getting hit by a vehicle.  Not only was my foot throbbing and pounding but i still had cramps in both thighs, my right calf, and right hamstring.  I could reach down and feel the knots in both legs.  I knew i couldn't stop because if i did it would be nearly impossible to get going again.  Oh, did i mention both of my nipples were bloody raw from my sweat soaked short rubbing against my chest.
Finally we hit mile 26 and only had .2 to finish.  I gotta tell you it felt like a mile to me.  The crowd at the finish line along with Goofy and Mickey/Minnie was awesome.  When i crossed the line and knew i was done, i instantly dropped and crawled out of everyone else's way.  I have had a broken bone and other various injuries playing sports through high school and college and i gotta tell you all of them combined was nothing compared to the hurt i felt after running this race.  The sense of accomplishment was incredible.
After i gained some strenght and waited for my wife to finshed, we somehow managed to get to the car and head home.  When we got home i hit the couch and didn't move for a couple hours.  My foot was still in incredible pain so i decided to just look at it out of curiosity only to discover it is bruised the entire lenght of the outside of my foot.  I think my wife thought i was exaggerating until i showed her my foot and told her i ran 10 miles in that condition.
To make a long story short, i'm done with marathons.  It was an incrediable accomplishment and i'm glad we did it.  But the truth is the pain and suffering i'll still be feeling for a few days doesn't feel worth it.  I'm sure i won't be able to get out of bed tomorrow and the days to follow will be tough.

So, anyone wanna run one too?

Ya it does make your stomach smaller.  However, if you continually eat just a tad more over a long period of time it'll stretch your stomach out.  Also, regardless of your stomach size if you eat garbage it'll eventually put the weight back on as well.
2610  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Anyone here have any experience with gastric bypass surgery? on: January 09, 2005, 09:28:10 PM
i have known a couple different people who have had the surgery and both had the same results.  both initially lost a ton of weight but gained it all back and more because they never adressed their eating issues and why they used food for comfort.  my wife has a friend who went through it and is headed back in the same direction she came from because again she never solved her issues.  alot of people can be successful but make sure you know it's only a tool to assist you in weight loss and not the solution.  good luck and let us know how it goes.

So i've decided to give itunes a go and so far i'm liking the program.  However, i've been wanting to try and make some cd's and i'm getting same reoccuring error during each burn attempt.
The error says, "the attempt to burn a disk failed, an unknown error occured at 4310".  Anyone know what's the deal?  I'm a bit upset i've paid for all these songs and now i can't make cd's with them.
Also, is there not a way to use nero to burn songs from itunes?

Ok update fellas..............i need some advice

I'm purchasing this Palm for myself after researching them for my friend.  My question is does this have a decent amount of memory or drive space to add other programs to in the future?  I'm assuming it has a hard drive type piece of hardware like a pc, so i'm wondering what's a good amount to have?  I can see myself wanting to add some other software in the future, so would i want to buy an upgrade with this one?  If so, what amount of upgrade should i look to get?
2617  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Need help buying a PDA on: January 05, 2005, 11:52:18 PM

Ok, While checking these out for someone else i'm thinking of getting one for myself.  Additionally, i recieved an Office Max $40 coupon today in the mail for purchases over $200.

Any of these pda's look like a decent buy with the $40 off and a $50 rebate?  I'd be looking at the $300'ish range myself.  How about the PalmOne Zire 72 Handheld for $299 without my discount?
2618  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Halftime Show sucked pure ass on: January 05, 2005, 11:50:43 PM
ya i'm always shocked to see who they book to perform these halftime shows.  you would think they'd have someone perform more in line with the target audience.  i could be wrong, but 99% of college football fans who watch these games are not Ashlee Simpson and Kelly Clarkson fans.  i hate halftime shows typically, but i'd be more inclined to watch if they had something more appropriate for my taste.

I purposely did not watch because i would rather eat hot coals than listen to Ashlee Simpson sing.  However, i did catch the last 30 seconds and did anyone else hear what i thought was boos from nearly the entire crowd when it was done?

2623  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Need help buying a PDA on: January 04, 2005, 07:01:17 PM
I have a friend who is in the market for a pda and i have no earthly idea on what they should be looking for or what features they would need or can get.  So let me say what they'll be needing it for and the features they've expressed they'd like and give me some suggestions.

They're looking to stay in the $300 range if at all possible with the features desired.

They'll primarily be using it for nursing school.  From what i understand you can get one with a recorder built in that they can use to record lectures or use while doing clinicals themselves.  Obviously a good organizer and something fairly intuitive and not overwhleming would be nice as well.  Everyday use for notetaking, calender use, and a recorder.
What would be some recommendations and is there somewhere online recommended to shop or is a b&m the best advice?

2626  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Best music download site on: January 03, 2005, 03:18:31 AM
ok i checked out napster but i see it costs $9.95 a month plus the .99 or whatever a song.  does everyone require a monthly fee or is this just napster?  if this is the case, i'll be passing.  i'm disappointed i would have to pay a monthly fee and a fee for each song.
any that don't require a monthly fee?
2627  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Best music download site on: January 02, 2005, 07:20:51 PM
how about napster?  also, i remember before when it was all free, some songs you downloaded were terrible in quality or either were not even the songs that the title said they were.  is this still the case?  if i'm paying for a song, i'd want to be sure it's cd quality before i pay for it.  how does that work now?
2628  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Best music download site on: January 02, 2005, 05:31:58 AM
I think someone has had a thread such as this before, but i can't seem to find it.
So i was looking for advice on what sites everyone uses to download songs?  Is everyone around $.99 a song?  I'm assuming you can burn cd's as well, correct?  I'm looking to make some cd's not transfer to an mp3 player or anything.  Can you preview a sites selection as well?
What's everyone using?

2636  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Anyone familiar with sleeping disorders? on: December 31, 2004, 10:38:12 AM
For the past year or more, my wife has what i was thinking is some type of sleep apnea.  Approximately every other month she would wake me up holding her throat and chocking.  The best way i could descibe it is that it was like she had swallowed her throat.  She also is completely exhausted even after a 10 hour night of sleep and she's been having headaches the past month now.  There's no telling how often this occured, i just noticed it every other month or so.  It would freak me out, but i would forget about it until the next episode.
Well i read over this past weekend that Reggie White dies and sleep apnea is partialy to blame for it (amongst other things).  I immediately think, This is what is happening to my wife!  I go online and do some research and what do you know, i'm pretty positive she has apnea!  So i scare the crap out of her with the Reggie White story because i knew otherwise she would think it's ridiculous and we set an appointment with a sleep specialist.
So Tuesday she has her consultation with the Neurologist.  She explains her symptoms and he tells her ya it sounds like apnea.  However, the freakin idiot also tells her, "oh, if it's not apnea it's probably just MS, but don't worry about it".  When she calls me crying i freakin go through the roof!  What doctor would tell a patient such a thing out of the blue if he wasn't more sure?  I assured her that ms is ridiculous, although it had me worried as well and it had to be some type of apnea.  They set a sleep study for next week.
Now last night we get a call at 8 pm that they've had a cancellation and did she want to do the study?  Of course she's eager to get it done so she says yes she'll be right there.  She takes off and tells me she'll call me in the morning when she finds out the resuls.

Fast forward to this morning...............the study found out that she woke up 132 times last night and they have diagnosed her with hypopnea.  Apparently it's not exactely apnea because hypopnea is a partial obstruction not complete like apnea.  I tell her no wonder she's exhausted if she wakes up over 100 times a night, she's getting no rest at all!  Lastly, they want another study to have her sleep with one of those breathing masks to see if that treatment will work or if she'll need medicine for it.
I'm just thankful they didn't mention ms to her anymore.  Anyone else had any experince with apnea or particularly hypopnea?

i've never watched the show myself, but the thing that bugs me with these types of shows are exactely what IHate mentioned.  don't get me wrong, these folks are going through horrible tragedies or misfortunes that i'm glad i don't have to experience.  however, it bothers me that someone more needier financially isn't getting the makeover.
for example, our local newspaper every Christmas does a special weekly article on a needy family and tells their story.  this week was a mexican family who are living in a single wide trailor without electricity (last night it got to 32 degrees here in Florida).  they have 4 kids; one being a 15 yr old with cancer and the father who is a plumber just got laid off.  now tell me this family doesn't need a home make over more than a chiropractor living in a well to do suburb in Cali.
the more i write the more i get pissed off so i'll leave it at that.
