2562  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Got a medical question here on: January 31, 2005, 07:35:37 PM
So last week my doctor wanted to check my blood because i had slightly high cholesterol count (210) the last time i gave blood.  I didn't go to the appointment today for the results but my wife went in because she had a cold and the nurse gave her some info. about my readings.
Apparently some of the readings were incomplete so i have to go and get them taken again, but she told my wife my glycerides were 400 and that was not good.  My wife asked her what that meant but she said i had to come and give another blood sample because something didn't read correctly.
So what would a glyceride count of 400 mean?  I'm actually shocked since i eat a healthy balanced diet with few if any sugars or sweets.  Anyone have any idea and any links online to read?
2563  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Need help with potty training my son on: January 31, 2005, 05:43:33 PM
All day yesterday he would take off his shorts and pull off his diaper and then come to us and tell us to put his diaper back on.
He just wont keep his diaper on.  Evidently he took if out while in bed last night and woke up in a wet bed covered in pee.  We are worried, just wondering how to help him go at home because it seems he really wants to.  Plus cleaning sheets every morning won't be any fun either.

Good idea.  He's a huge Spiderman and Thomas the Train fan.  Might give those a try.
Thanks
2565  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Need help with potty training my son on: January 30, 2005, 09:12:02 PM
Our son is right at 2 years and 1 month old and we are having a tough time getting him to use the training chair we got him or the regular toilet.  The strange thing is that he goes regularly at day school without problem, and has been for a few weeks now.  However, when he comes to us at home and tells us he has to potty, he freaks out and screams when we take him near the bathroom.  For some reason it scares him to be near our toilet or his potty chair we bought him and he just won't use them.
I can't think of any reason he'd have any fear of our bathroom.  I've taken him in with me and let him watch me use the toilet.  I've put some cheerios in the toilet to try and make a game out of it.  We've done all we can think of and he's scared to go at home.  We even bought an Elmo toilet training doll and he uses it but won't do it himself.  I even took him outside today thinking maybe i could get him to go outside and it wouldn't work either.
The other thing is that this morning he wouldn't go even though he told us he had to and later we found where he had went in his bedroom on the floor.  We have never scolded him or made any type of unnecessary scene around him about the bathroom.  We know he has to go and wants to, but we can't get him to do it in the toilet.
Anyone have any advice or suggestions on what to do or how to approach this?
2566  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Trying to recover after reinstalling Windows, help on: January 29, 2005, 02:58:18 PM
I had to reinstall XP because of some corrupt files, so i'm trying to remember how to get some basic functions working again.
#1.  How do you turn on the XP firewall or does it automatically work?
#2.  Wheres the file transfer tool?

I got some more questions but cant remember them, so what about those two?
2567  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / What movie should i see this Friday? on: January 27, 2005, 11:21:31 PM
Hide and Seek has some interest and National Treasure.  However, Assualt on Precint 13 would be a cool manly movie to check out.  I'll check out one of these three and see how it goes.
2568  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / What movie should i see this Friday? on: January 27, 2005, 12:46:17 AM
So i have the afternoon without the wife or kid so i thought i'd go check out a movie by myself since i get to do this once every 10 years now.
However, nothing seems to really appeal to me that i can tell.  I've seen House of Flying Daggers Meet the Fockers and nothing else thats playing. Outside of that i'm struggling on what to pick from.  I was thinking Million Dollar Baby but i dont like the idea of a woman boxing, i really dont want to see that.  How's Racing Stripes or National Treasure?  Nothing is really standing out that i can tell.
Any suggestions?

Ya i've already got Slayer #1 on my list.  Theres only 1 review of it at Amazon but it's a good rating.  I love vampire stories so i'm excited to see how it goes.
I also loaded up the Wizards series as well.  I'm not real big on sci-fi, but free is always good.  I'll let you know what turns out good.
And again, the reader for Palm is awesome.

thanks warning.  any of those you'd recommend?  and you know ChaoZ i never thought in a million years i'd like to read anything from a small screen off a pda but i really enjoyed reading what i did.  strange enough.
Last of the Mohicans and Wizard of Oz came free with the palm reader software so i read The Mohicans and quite Oz after a couple nights.
Thanks again warning.

Edit- Warning, it looks as thought the books don't run on Palm Reader, got a link to a reader they work with?
I see several there i can't wait to start, especially Slayer and the Wizard Bane series.  Thanks a ton again!

Edit- Found the reader.  Wow it's so much nicer than Palm Reader.  Again, thanks and i can't wait to read some of these!

I have palmreader for my Palm One and i enjoyed reading The Last of the Mohicans on my pda at night in bed and during breaks at school.
So i was wondering if anyone else reads on their pda and what site do you buy from and what are some good recommendations to read?  I was looking for something like Life of Pi or CS Lewis's Screwtape Letters but i can't find them for the pda.  Any other good reads someone can advise thats available for the pda and Palm Reader?

Keep on going Drazz.  I'm not trying to play devils advocate because i know these things suck, but they did not just make up that 75% that i'm aware of.  I've been to several schools and i've seen it before whenever i tried to apply for financial aid.  I was recently put on financial aid suspension because i am in excess hours because i already have a BS and i'm doing something totally unrelated to that education.  When i was suspended they intially didn't tell me why, but one of the reasons was because of that 75% rule you mentioned.
All i'm saying is don't lose faith.  I know none of us here know how you feel, but i encourage you to not let this get the best of you.  From what you've already told us there's no doubt you are a survivor.  Look at this as a way to prove everyone or thing wrong about not being successful.
Be as positive as you can and things will work out.

Well let me jump in here and post before this thread gets out of hand and off-topic as most of Drazzil's post do.
#1.  Drazz, i have read most if not all of your posts here and at GG over the last few years about your antics, trials, and unfortunate events in life.  However, to my knowledge this is the first time i've decided to post in any of them.
I gotta second Rage's advice about getting yourself out of that town and into an environment that's going to make it easier for you to achieve your goals in life.  You might find it hard to believe, but there's alot of people around here secretly pulling for you and waiting on that "success" thread instead of these disasters we see here weekly.
Theres no doubt you've been handed a crappy deck to deal with, but you gotta play the hand you got.  You just can't get yourself involved in fights and situations like the one last night.  I know the girl you were protecting was your friend but fighting with gang members is about the stupidist thing i've heard.  Unless you can catch bullets or take on about 10-12 of those jerks, why would you even consider getting involved?  Were there no other police to help? I guarantee if you were to hit one about 10 more would have came out of nowhere and hurt or even "killed" you.
Take some advice from some of the people around here that's lived a few years longer than you and take them to heart.  I know we haven't walked in your shoes.  But i would bet theres a few here that's been through alot of similar things as you have and has come out of it successfully.
Most of the unbelievable life changing stories you read about or see on tv are about people who decided they were no longer going to live in the crap they were in.  Most took drastic steps to get out and alot of time left alot of family and friends behind.  So i would suggest that you either make a commitment as well or accept these types of things will happen to you continually the rest of your life.  I refuse to believe these things happen over and over to people who are living positive and healthly lives.
And let me add, i am not attacking you Drazz.  I took the time to write because i wanna see you get out of this mess.  Heck i'd pay for a bust icket for you to get somewhere else if you needed it.  I'm still waiting on that "feel good" thread Drazz.

i think the only one i might buy is the one with my wife.  the one coming out of cinderella's castle was cool except it's too much of a distant shot.  our medals are really cool as you can see and we are thinking of having them framed with a picture.
i got some neat pictures with some Disney characters i'll post when i get them developed.

and i also think i've discovered i have a stress fracture in my foot.  i've done some reading online and talked with some seasoned runners and what i've explained about my foot injury is the signs of a stress fracture.  kinda bummed because i was hoping to get out and running again next week.  looks like i'll be cycling, swimming, or on the efx for a few weeks.

my wife is also digging at me for us to do the Rock-N-Roll Marathon in San Diego in June.  i'm actually considering doing it and joining a charity to run for AIDS or cancer research.

I bought a PalmOne Zire 72 earlier this week and i'm attempting to move some songs off cd's and itunes.  The software that came with the Zire is Real Player.  I don't have an account nor do i want to have one with Real Player, so what other way is there to transfer music?  I tried moving songs from cd's and it gives me a message that says files aren't compatable with my pda.  I tried moving files from itunes and it tells me they aren't compatable either.
Is there another software i can use to transfer music?  If not, how do i do it with the software i have now?

as an update i am still very sore today and my foot is still killing me.  i hope to get the camera out to develop my pictures in the next day or so and i'll post some pictures.
and yes Laner the commitment to train for a marathon is tremendous.  actually the hardest part for me during training was the time sink involved when you got to the point of doing runs that took 3 or 4 hours to complete.  my wife and i both hated the time it took on weekends to do those runs when our weekends are devoted to family time. the physical part wasn't too bad when compared to the time commitment.
i know i said last night i won't ever run another but last night lying in bed thinking about the people who raised money for sick children and ran for them was very inspiring.  i guess i should have never said never.

2593  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Finished my first marathon today! *Updated with pics* on: January 10, 2005, 02:26:05 AM
Yep me and my wife both ran and completed the Disney World marathon this morning.  We've both been training for about 6 months and all i gotta say is i'm glad it's over.
During our entire 6 months of training, i never once had an injury or cramps as the result of the strenuous amount of running.  However, (as luck would have it) i actually sprained my foot at mile 16 and developed a bad case of leg cramps at 18 to the point i almost had to stop.
The first 16 miles were a piece of cake and i was coasting thinking i had it made.  Then at 16 without notice i felt a sharp pain in my right foot.  I went on the assumption it was typical muscle aches and pains of a marathon and continued on.  At mile 18 the pain only intensified.  I stopped at the medical tent to apply some biofreeze to my foot hoping it would numb the pain long enough to get to the next station a couple miles along.  Disaster struck when i attempted to start running again both my legs completely locked up.  The first thought that came to my mind was, "I'm finished".  No way did i think i could run 8 more miles not only on a bad foot but with 2 cramped legs.  Thankfully the station i was at had bananas so i downed 2 and rested for a couple minutes to get going again.  Now i was off on what would turn out to be the most torturous thing i could ever imagine doing to my body.
Up until 20 i was in serious pain but i managed to get along.  But at the snap of a finger at 20 i was nearly unable to even walk much less run.  I decided to walk a bit and catch my breath and concentrate on getting to 21 and through the last 5.  Just as i was feeling sorry for myself, a woman jogged by me with a child's picture on her shirt with the qoute, "You think a marathon is tough, try chemotherapy".  Let me tell you thats all the inspiration i needed.  I immediately thought of my little boy and remembered how blessed we are he's healthy and took off jogging again.
To make a long story short, it took 2 hours to run the 5 miles i would normally do in about 55 minutes.  Most of the way it was nearly unbearable pain.  I would imagine it was what it would feel like getting hit by a vehicle.  Not only was my foot throbbing and pounding but i still had cramps in both thighs, my right calf, and right hamstring.  I could reach down and feel the knots in both legs.  I knew i couldn't stop because if i did it would be nearly impossible to get going again.  Oh, did i mention both of my nipples were bloody raw from my sweat soaked short rubbing against my chest.
Finally we hit mile 26 and only had .2 to finish.  I gotta tell you it felt like a mile to me.  The crowd at the finish line along with Goofy and Mickey/Minnie was awesome.  When i crossed the line and knew i was done, i instantly dropped and crawled out of everyone else's way.  I have had a broken bone and other various injuries playing sports through high school and college and i gotta tell you all of them combined was nothing compared to the hurt i felt after running this race.  The sense of accomplishment was incredible.
After i gained some strenght and waited for my wife to finshed, we somehow managed to get to the car and head home.  When we got home i hit the couch and didn't move for a couple hours.  My foot was still in incredible pain so i decided to just look at it out of curiosity only to discover it is bruised the entire lenght of the outside of my foot.  I think my wife thought i was exaggerating until i showed her my foot and told her i ran 10 miles in that condition.
To make a long story short, i'm done with marathons.  It was an incrediable accomplishment and i'm glad we did it.  But the truth is the pain and suffering i'll still be feeling for a few days doesn't feel worth it.  I'm sure i won't be able to get out of bed tomorrow and the days to follow will be tough.

So, anyone wanna run one too?

Ya it does make your stomach smaller.  However, if you continually eat just a tad more over a long period of time it'll stretch your stomach out.  Also, regardless of your stomach size if you eat garbage it'll eventually put the weight back on as well.
2596  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Anyone here have any experience with gastric bypass surgery? on: January 09, 2005, 09:28:10 PM
i have known a couple different people who have had the surgery and both had the same results.  both initially lost a ton of weight but gained it all back and more because they never adressed their eating issues and why they used food for comfort.  my wife has a friend who went through it and is headed back in the same direction she came from because again she never solved her issues.  alot of people can be successful but make sure you know it's only a tool to assist you in weight loss and not the solution.  good luck and let us know how it goes.

The error says, "the attempt to burn a disk failed, an unknown error occured at 4310".  Anyone know what's the deal?  I'm a bit upset i've paid for all these songs and now i can't make cd's with them.
Also, is there not a way to use nero to burn songs from itunes?
