hey jztemple, would someone with no prior city building type games find it rather painless to jump into and learn? i've never played any of the city building type games because it always seemed too tedious to me. however, i've kept an eye on this for a while now and really have some interest in it. yet, i don't want to try it out and realize i'm in over my head. would a newcomer to this game type feel comfortable and does the tutorials do a good job of teaching a newbie?

fyi i'm d/l'ing from fileplanet without subscribing. you do have to wait an hour or so but you can use their public servers now, no need to pay if you aren't wanting the other services. the d/l is a bit slow but it's free and 10 times quicker than blizzards. i should be done in 4 hours total.

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Got $3500 and need a car, help me choose

To make a long story short, we are in need of a back-up vehicle for my wife to travel back and forth to work in and we got $3500 to work with. We are looking to get something that'll last for approximately 2 years so i can get done with school and we can splurge for something newer. Therefore, something decent on gas and just something that has typically been reliable across the board as far as general maintenance goes. We made the mistake a couple years back of not asking questions before we went shopping and ended up getting something that rated horrible by consumer report. The only requirements is that it's not a truck. We have a toddler that might have to ride occasionally so we don't want a truck. Any make and models someone might suggest we look at and some to avoid at all costs?

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / HL2 cd key questions and steam

Got a question............i've got HL2 and all of the silver package games updated as much as possible. However, i read threads all the time about cd keys and i just realized i was never given any. Am i missing something here? The reason i ask is because if i start HL1 or DoD source, it puts up a window that has a place to register my products with a key, which i never got. Should i have gotten a key or am i alright? I just checked my confirmation email after i purchased the silver package a few weeks ago and there's no key.

Alright i got it working! I'm downloading all the mods now. Might now get around to playing till tomorrow night. Got a couple quick questions about the downloads though......... there seems to be 2 links for the community bonus packs, the first being the link you have that says "community bonus pack 2 volume 1 and 2 and the other a link that says cbp1. is those the same mod or do i need them both? also the "community bonus pack 2 vol. 1 and 2" link takes me to just 1 single download, is that correct? is vol. 1 and 2 together in the same download?

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / How to get an estimate on baseball cards?
|
on: November 02, 2004, 03:57:31 AM
|
An honest estimate would be more like it. Here's the situation, i have what i would say is several hundred or near a thousand baseball cards i'd like to get rid of. I know i could find a local collector to look at them, but is there a way to know how honest someone would be and for me not to get ripped off? I was a semi serious collector in the late 80's and remember buying some specific cards to add to my collection. Therefore i gotta believe i have a decent amount of $$ in this collection i'd like to maybe cash in on. I also have some old football cards, ie. late 70's 80's, i'm thinking might be worth something. All in all i think i have some money in these i don't want to get ripped off over. Is anyone here a serious collector that can help me out or have some advice on where to get some help? If you do, shoot me an email at [email protected].

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Need help with frequent flyer miles

Ok i'll admit i'm ignorant here and i need some help, so here's the deal..........
My wife will be starting a traveling job in December where every 3 months she'll be moving across the country to wherever we like. The company is paying for her travel and also agrees to let her get the frequent flyer miles. And since i'll be logging the same miles she will, i figure this is a good chance to start rolling some up. However, i have no earthly idea how this works. How do you get miles? How are they calculated? What airlines does anyone prefer? Etc. Etc. Etc. If someone wants to school me i'm ready to take notes.

ya they told her most jobs will be 13 weeks. it's just something to do for a few months and then come back home and settle down again. what we are planning is getting a couple trips to Hawaii and Alaska out of it as well as some others nice places. basically we'd just have to pay for my plane ticket since our son is still free for now. they are lining her up for Seattle in December for the first trip, gotta find the Seattle gg'ers to meet there. wanna hear something funny.........they tell her if we drive instead of fly they'll give her an extra $100 a month. remember, i live in florida and will be traveling with a 22 month child and they asked if we'd rather drive, lol!

My wife and i are seriously considering packing up and doing some traveling/contract work for a few months. We figure if this is something we wanted to do we should do it now since our son is still only 22 months and we wouldn't be taking him from friends or dayschool or anything of that nature. We got the idea from a contracted worker who is at my wife's rehab facility now who works for this http://www.dhcstaffing.com/index.html company. She's been doing this for years and loves it. I have traveled a bit across the country but my wife has been virtually nowhere and has been wanting to get out of Florida for some time now. I have been playing stay at home daddy so i won't be out of a job and actually we would come out a bit ahead $$ wise because they pay for lodging, travel, and some expenses. We could shut down our utilities at home for a few months and have the neighbors keep an eye out and we'd be set. The only concern we have is when we are tired of traveling to different cities every 3 months is her getting her job back. I don't think they'd be thrilled for her doing this and wouldn't gaurantee holding her job. However, Florida is always in dire need of healthcare workers and we don't think it would be a problem catching on again somewhere. Anyone have any experience with this? Only problem i have is figuring out how to lug my desktop around since i can't afford a laptop.

yep this is a very ugly situation for the Yanks. very few if any on that roster are tradable and free of their contracts. Giambi could be done, Mussina and Brown are well over the hill, Rivera is very beatlable now. i'm saying the Yanks won't even make the playoffs next year.

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Message to Red Sox fans from a Yankee fan (it's pro sox's)

to be a bit more specific, A-Rod was clearly out and the tag was just a formality when he swiped the ball away. couple that with the fact he later says he should have run him over (again when he was clearly out by a long way) makes it even more disgusting. and yes i'll agree that one bad player or fan doesn't make the rest of the team classless, i just felt overall the Sox's handled themsleves more professionally than did the Yankees.

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Message to Red Sox fans from a Yankee fan (it's pro sox's)

This is the first message i have posted about the playoffs as i was waiting for the end of the ALCS to comment. And seeing it's over i wanted to throw my $.02 out there for everyone to read. In the past i have engaged in some light hearted heckling with some folks at GG when it comes to the Sox vs Yanks rivalry. Sure i gloated a bit last year when the Yanks again beat the Soxs for the ALCS, however, i knew this year was for some reason different. Even when the Yanks jumped ahead 3-0, i warned my brother and everyone i talked with that this was faaaaaaaar from over. I just got that feeling that the Yanks had that "oh all we got to do is win one more over the next 4 and we go to the series again" attitude. Letting games 4 and 5 get away was all the evidence i needed a major collapse was in the working. But the final straw for me was the events of last nights game involving A-Rod and the fans at Yankee Stadium. I was embarrassed enough for what Alex did, but when i read his qoute about the play i lost alot of respect for him as a player; The umpires called it runner's interference and the Red Sox called it bush league while Rodriguez claimed confusion about what he had done wrong, offering this explanation: "I guess I should have run him over.'' Couple this with the fact that the stadium turned into what looked like a prison outbreak, i'm embarrassed to be a Yankee fan. I have defended the Yankees year in and year out but the bubble has finally busted for me. I can honestly say i'm glad the Soxs won the series and are headed to the series instead of the Yanks. I'm disgusted, embarrassed, and a bit ashamed that not only did the fans stoop to a new low, but a player has as well. No i don't live in New York (never even visited the place) so if you wanna tell me that's just New Yorkers or true Yankee fans or whatever, go ahead. I'm just glad they are finished for this season and i suspect i'll have indifferent feelings about ever supporting them again. Am i just a bitter cry baby because they lost, nope. I told my wife tonight i hoped they lost because there was no way i was watching the series with them in it. So i say, 'grats Soxs. This will definitely go down as one of the greatest comebacks in sports history as well as the biggest choke. Not only did the better team win, but classier won as well. That's my $.02. You Yankee fans can flame me all you want, i stand by my statement.

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Need some advice from E-Bay sellers

I just had an aggrevating auction recently myself. I won an auction for a cd and promptly paid my money. I get an email about 30 minutes later that says my item was shipped (which was total garbage). About a week goes by and i haven't seen the cd so i email the seller and politely ask when the package was shipped. She replies with, "it should have shipped on xx, but it could take up to three weeks to arrrive. So my respose to her was, #1. What does "should" mean? Was it shipped or not? #2. If it was shipped on the date you specified, that isn't the date your first email said it was shipped on. #3. Why the heck would it take three weeks for a cd to ship within the US? And naturally there was never any response to that email and sure enough it took 2 1/2 weeks to get the cd. Now of course she had over 30k positive feedbacks so who knew? I think the system is broke. However, i'm not sure on how to fix it. I think alot of folks are not honest with their feedback and they feel bad not to leave negative or neutral feedbacks. I'm definitely not buying again from Ebay unless it's something i can't find in retail. I'll spend a few extra dollars from now on from a reputable store instead of the crap shoot ebay is turning into.
