I find the game is appropriately named. I also cannot play it.  I'm part of the group that has ongoing ATI issues.  Did they not have a beta with this game? The game stinks of sloppy programing & development.
43  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Rage on: October 17, 2011, 04:15:03 AM
I can't believe they released a PC game that is in this state.  It has known issues with the Logitech Keyboards (openGL conflicts), doesn't work well with many radeon video cards, among all the other issues (you can see the two that have annoyed me).  I find the game aptly named.  Very tempted to push for a refund, except it is ID and I suspect they'll fix the issues.

The premise:
Could I destroy the entire Roman Empire during the reign of Augustus if I traveled back in time with a modern U.S. Marine infantry battalion or MEU? Submitted by The_Quiet_Earth on Reddit.

Quote
from The_Quiet_Earth:

So I've been watching HBO's Rome and Generation Kill simultaneously and it's lead me to fantasize about traveling back in time with modern troops and equipment to remove that self-righteous little twat Octavian (Augustus) from power.

Let's say we go back in time with a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), since the numbers of members and equipment is listed for our convenience in this Wikipedia article, could we destroy all 30 of Augustus' legions?

We'd be up against nearly 330,000 men since each legion was comprised of 11,000 men. These men are typically equipped with limb and torso armor made of metal, and for weaponry they carry swords, spears, bows and other stabbing implements. We'd also encounter siege weapons like catapults and crude incendiary weapons.

We'd be made up of about 2000 members, of which about half would be participating in ground attack operations. We can use our four Abrams M1A1 tanks, our artillery and mechanized vehicles (60 Humvees, 16 armored vehicles, etc), but we cannot use our attack air support, only our transport aircraft.

We also have medics with us, modern medical equipment and drugs, and engineers, but we no longer have a magical time-traveling supply line (we did have but the timelords frowned upon it, sadly!) that provides us with all the ammunition, equipment and sustenance we need to survive. We'll have to succeed with the stuff we brought with us.

So, will we be victorious?

I really hope so because I really dislike Octavian and his horrible family. Getting Atia will be a bonus.
.... (more at the prior link)
The premise was modified so there are no magical supply lines for the Marines to resupply their fuel, food, or ammo, and they don't have use of the tanks, artillery, or attack helicopters.   Please see the original link, there's a bunch of info it links to and brought up in the following thread.

James Erwin (Prufrock451 on Reddit) Created an epic tale to go with this, one that has been picked up for a movie.

Quote

Madhouse Entertainment’s Adam Kolbrenner spotted Erwin’s “Rome, Sweet Rome” posts once they reached the top of Reddit and moved quickly to contact the writer and begin working with him to develop the concept. When it came time to find a home for the project, Kolbrenner brought it to WB’s Chris Gary, a young exec who encouraged the studio to move aggressively to acquire it.

Kolbrenner will produce with Gianni Nunnari (“Immortals”) of Hollywood Gang, where John Ridley will oversee the project for the company. Madhouse’s Robyn Meisinger will exec produce and Gary will shepherd the project for Warners.

The subredit: Rome, Sweet Rome, links to the specific story are on the right, or you can find the initial ones here:

I agree, the conversation mechanic is fantastic.  Most conversations it really doesn't matter who's talking or whats being said - they move the story along and have some slight twists & turns. Its those key conversations though that you'll remember: on my bounty hunter winning the roll so that I pistol whipped & shot the sniveling coward of a captain of the ship we were in was awesome. Likewise, seeing a trooper among a group of jedi win a role to space a bunch of innocents when an alternate (but riskier) solution was available was also awesome to watch.

Putting a pink suit on Darth Vader doesn't change the fact that it's Darth Vader.  There is only one Darth Vader.  So it does break the immersion a little.

It's more than that though-the initial companion customization packet included an entirely new head. Went from being a dreadlocked hippy looking guy to a blond leading man kinda look. That plus new armor and he looked unique enough that it wasn't a concern.

One of my suggestions in the post beta poll they had was that the either the companion be randomized for the customizable looks up front (so look-a-likes on starting companions wouldn't be the standard) or that they give you customization options earlier.
49  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Star Wars Fan Fics on: October 11, 2011, 05:23:53 AM
I'm not usually a fan of fan fiction as generally the cheese is in the extreme, however these are both very well done.  The first has better special effects (trumps the first few star wars movies I think), and kind of has an alien vibe to it as well however the second is quite good as well (although its special effects aren't nearly as good).  Enjoy!

Turn CC on for subtitles, Dark Resurrection is in Spanish.
Dark Resurrection, Vol. 0 & Vol 1

No need for CC on this one.
A Light in the Darkness, Part 1 & Part 2 & Part 3

edit: I just finished both Vol. 0 & Vol. of Dark Resurrection, only Vol. 0 has the alien-ish vibe, the rest is all Star Wars and is absolutely fantastic - I'd pay to see it in the theaters and is significantly better than latest garbage Lucas put out.

How about Mad Libs SWTOR style?

....

I remember how excited so many of us here (even me, even Wargus) were here when STO was in late open beta. It was of course a mirage - like many a prematurely launched mmo I've hitched my flag to. I'm glad I got to test SWTOR but I'm not ready to pass judgement one way or the other on the game. I'm anxious to see what the game is like in early December.  icon_smile

Agreed.  I'm going to get the game and I'm sure I'll enjoy it initially.  As with STO, I will get my investment out of it in the enjoyment of it in its first month (because as much as I pissed & moaned about STO, it was a lot of fun for 30 days).   Will SWTOR last longer than that? Maybe, I don't know.  I tend to bounce in & out of MMOs so we'll see and I am not sure this will survive as my MMO of choice when pitted against GW2.

Damnit, get into specifics! For one thing, then I'll know more about the game than I do now and, for another, it'll increase the odds of you getting kicked out of the beta and, therefore, increase my odds of getting in. So -- spill already! slywink

Vaguely speaking, my experience confirms I'll enjoy the Smuggler and Bounty Hunter. I just wish I'd have time to get them further. I don't think I'll get a chance to try space combat alas. Any surprises? I'm much more keen on the Inquisitor than I was before.  icon_twisted

Keeping with my vein of "let's talk about what we've seen in official videos cause I can't talk about my testing experience," I think we can hear/see that the voice stuff is all quite awesome. When watching said vids, the character animations in dialogue sequences still strike me as more puppet-like than I'd like. The cartoon-ish look doesn't bother me as much as the feeling I'm watching sort of marionettes who all have the same animations to choose from. And you'll see a character looking like they're dancing, and that's apparently a "cheering" animation.

But realistically, I didn't see them doing mo-cap with this, or having time to do individualized animation sets for every character in the game. I think the voice work is uniformly terrific though -- it can get me to overlook other things.  icon_smile

In the same vein: I'm not that interested the cover mechanic although I can see how some people would like it.  I will enjoy the Bounty Hunter. A lot.  As in this might be the first Star Wars game I play the Empire and dark side as my primary.  The Mercenary looks like a heck of a lot of fun!  ninja

Without getting into specifics, I am very pleased with what I saw and the state of the game given its release date.

I thought it was a beta invite too.  Maybe the next email will have the title, "The annoucement you've really been waiting for...welcome to the beta!"

Exactly.  I understand there were issues that weren't fixed and needless changes were made. I already own the DVDs, my TV isn't HD. I can forgo yet another release.  I can always change my mind, we'll have some other super release in 2 years, and another a few years after, etc...

I used to be really excited about this, about getting a new game in the Star Wars universe and that Bioware was making it.  Even when it became obvious that this game wasn't going to push any boundaries I was still really excited simply for the IP.  Then I started paying attention to Guild Wars 2 and all I can say now is Bioware is going to get trounced. I am interested in trying this game, but if it doesn't release before GW2 I probably won't.

What is up with releasing games at the end of a 3 day weekend?

This!  I don't know what the hell the publishers were thinking.

Since I have very little time during the week, releasing late in the weekend turns a game from an impulse buy to something I'll wait on since I can't dedicate a ton of time until next weekend. That means if reviews come in sucky, I won't buy it at all.  You've got to wonder what the publishers were smoking.

Also, the pistol with the armor piercing mod is useful. The armor piercing mod bypasses all armor including augs. Use that headshots and the bosses go down. In fact, I used a silenced pistol with the laser sight and armor piercing upgrades almost exclusively.
