That looks correct.  Does it have all of these parts:

If so you just need to this:
Black cable on the bottom goes into the end of the box on the usb cable and into the matching connector on the end of the HDD.  Power adapter flat connector also goes into the HDD (don't plug it into the wall yet).

Now the HDD has one half the connector connected to power and half connected to the small black cables (SATA cable) that goes into the adapter. Place the HDD on a flat mostly non-conductive surface (desk should be fine).  Plug the power in.  You should hear the HDD spin up.  Wait 20 seconds.  Now plug the USB in.  It should show up as long as you didn't have an HDD password set.

3  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: What's The Coolest Thing You've Ever Won? on: February 23, 2013, 06:17:41 AM
I won a copy of the first Dungeon Siege a week or two before it came out.  It was a special "Gold Release" press of the disk signed by Chris Taylor.  Even cooler the entire dev team was playing multiplayer a bunch that dead week.  Got to play a game with CT for a while.

It was a kinda funny contest.  They were randomly turning on a signup form on a bunch of fan sites.  Each site let the first 5 or 10 people win and the rest went into a random winner pool.  The inventive CS student I was, I wrote a quick script to poll the sites for updates and sound an alarm.  Got like 2nd or 3rd on the 2nd site to go live.

Second best was pizza for a year.

So a local cheap pizza chain (Pizza Guys) dropped and empty box on my steps with a note that said "bring this in on Saturday for a free pizza!"  They were having a summer party and did this to a bunch of people that ordered often.  Well I bring it in to get my pizza the next day and they let me know I get a spin at the wheel.  I spin it and win pizza for a year (1 per month, any size, any toppings).  We got pretty creative with massive toppings combos over the next year.

Are people still playing?  I elited my first mech and have been playing a fair bit.  Trying to decide what mech to go for next.

Sorry I missed this thread over the holidays.  I have to agree with thFool - seems hypocritical to me that our society condemns sexuality in favor of violence.  So it's cool to play games simulating how many different ways I can kill or maim someone, but then we get morally outraged about games that simulate different ways to f someone?

I'm right there with these guys.  We spend so much time on moral outrage when the media attacks a game as a "murder simulator" that is "corrupting our children" but often do the same when a game like this comes along.  It took violent games years to figure out how to handle violence well (and well a huge segment still seem to be made with a middle school mindset).
6  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Mechwarrior Online - reserve your name on: November 22, 2012, 05:41:36 PM
Been running a Cicada with a lighter engine, 6x medium lasers, double heat sinks, and maxed armor.  It has been a blast.  I hang back and hover behind the big guys.  When they engage I run around and hit flanks.  I can get 3 or 4 alphas before I need to back off to cool down.

I think I can trade some armor for a slightly faster engine (I just used one I had around in stock).

I'm really liking how the longer you play the more equipment you build up in your stock.  I hate F2P games where everything is a rental.

LRM Fest '12 tonight.  They broke something in the patch and made LRMs nearly unavoidable.  Should be hotfixed shortly, but for now... WE FIGHT IN THE SHADE.

2) A long chase sequence through thin, crowded streets and back alleys. Here's where the game truly fails to recognize its own limitations. In order to run, you have to hold down the run button. The thing is, this button also doubles as the free running/climbing button. In practical terms, they might as well have given you the primary objective "Fail if you touch a wall during this extended chase", because that's what it is. You touch a wall, you fail. There's no coming back from that. Have fun replaying the entire chase, because there are no checkpoints. Then have the game taunt you with an optional objective that requires you not to shove/tackle anyone, and put an unavoidable crowd of people around the first bend. That's just rubbing salt in the wounds. Had to turn off the game after trying this chase five times and doing worse every time. Every single failure happened because I touched a wall, and let me tell you, the paths this chase tells you to run are full of twists and turns and are very narrow.

I did this one like 4 times, the worst part is depending on the random seed you get there are a couple of sections that are nearly impossible or at the very least make the bonus objective impossible.  They didn't bother to even have a static layout for the crowd on the mission, they just let it be whatever it was with a couple of additions.  That or they randomly set some portion of the crowd but in a way that impacts the mission significantly.

I have given up on optional goals. Made the frustration level go down a lot. They seem to be the really sketchy part.

On the map you can zoom out and in to cities to see where your next mission is.

+1 Tilt

I hit a few of the same issues as you and some of my own. I have had more controller throwing moments than the last 2 or 3 games combined and I expect I am less than half way.  Good thing the story is still awesome and there have been some good moments.

Have you noticed cut scenes are just off? Weird pauses, strange timing and at sometimes it feels like you are missing parts of the story?  I never remember feeling this way about the past games.
12  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Mechwarrior Online - reserve your name on: October 31, 2012, 08:05:25 PM
Yep, got tired of the resets.  Playing my Founders Atlas some and trying to save up for a Jenner.  After that I will probably work on a LRM boat Catapult.
13  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Xbox 360 MP] Halo 4 or Black Ops II? on: October 31, 2012, 05:47:34 PM
Probably Black Ops first, Halo down the line.  It isn't the holidays without hearing Hark piss off *someone* in an XBox Live CoD game.  I missed out last year (distracted by real life stuff) and it just wasn't the same.

First impressions.

The intro does drag a bit, after 3-4 hours I think I am finally getting past it.

Spoiler for Hiden:
The coming to America part was great, and a great symbolic transition from Europe to the new game.

Part of this was due to one controller throwing mission that just wasn't happening for me. You desync on detection, so if you get surprised or mess up an assassination and stab instead it is an instant loss.  It also has a sync reward for killing around corners that adds a bit of time to running the whole mission again.

Spoiler for Hiden:
The fort assault with Kenway and the crew.  It pretty awesome with the assassin calls as such, but once you get in the fort and had to unlock the captives it went down hill fast.   The first time I took forever learning the routs and got all the way to the boat, got surprised when the boat guy was around the corner and lost when I attacked but didn't kill.  The second time the final dude on the boat randomly turned around (he never did it a second time, no clue what happened).  The third the first guy on the boat glitched in a way where it was impossible to sneak up on him.  The fourth I was getting frustrated and did something stupid.  Got it the 5th time.

Things went okay for a while until another desync on detection mission.

Spoiler for Hiden:
Following Washington as he talks in the fort.  It opens up after that talk, but it took me a good few tries to find the right follow path and distance.  You also need to KO the first guard or he is guaranteed to spot you on the ladder.

After that it picks up again and you finish up the first part of the intro.

Comment you should open until after you finish
Spoiler for Hiden:
the Kenway missions and move on to Conner.
Spoiler for Hiden:
The Kenway reveal was pretty awesome.  I liked how even Desmond was like "Holy shit.."

Pretty excited to see where it goes.  It feels very different seeing AC in this time period.  The last four all had a similar feel even with the time difference, but this one feels pretty different.  Next I think I want to see an old west AC.  I'm thinking an Assassin gunslinger.

Well the UPS guy didn't drop off the package at my door like usual.  They seem to randomly decide they don't want to leave it.  In any case I am taking this as a sign I should swing by best buy and pick up the PS3 version and Liberation on the way home.  I have more 360 friends I do multiplayer with, but if I am honest with myself as much as I like it I almost never did Brotherhood mplayer and never did Rev mplayer.  Everyone will probably switch to Halo or CoD in a couple weeks anyways.  icon_biggrin

Gotta wait until I get power, but I'm wondering if there's any final word on 360 vs PS3 for this. Not pre-release forum buzz, but solid info.

Same.  In general I like Xbox for any multiplayer(and chevos!), but an hour of content for PS3 plus the extra mission from the PS Vita link makes it tempting.

I got an Apple machine because no one at work was an Apple user and I figured I could justify it that way.  I came to really like a lot of the OS.  That said I have a lot of computers, so it doesn't limit me in any way.  This was 4 years ago and I did get a fair bit of work value and kudos out of knowing how OSX works.

I use the Apple as my personal notebook and photography system.  So it gets a blend of high end photo apps and general web surfing.  My desktop rig is almost all games and doesn't even really have personal data on it.  As my old MBP was getting old and not able to keep up with the photo apps I was going to move to a cheaper iMac and keep the MBP around as my personal notebook, but then Apple had to go and refresh the MBP line and not the iMac line.  Now I am typing this on my shiny new rMPB.  I have to say running Aperture at 2880x1800 is amazing.

Hmm, I was hoping for a new iMac to replace/augment my 3.5 year old MBP.  It is just too slow for complicated photo work with Aperture and Photoshop.  Then Apple had to go and release the retina MBP.  Damn them.  The temptation of a 5 megapixel screen for photo work is high, and expensive, and shiny.  Luckly they are sold out(or simply never arrived) everywhere around here... not that I called or anything.   ninja

I'm waiting to see what the new 27" iMacs look like.  My current MBP is getting a bit long in the tooth for photo work, mostly because I am maxed on RAM.

interesting, I would think the helm controls would auto power engines in that type of non-emergency

Helm doesn't know if the warp drive is about to explode from over heating.  Engineering gets full control over the power systems.

What I need to figure out tonight is what are the options for the main screen, because the two they kept showing me were not so hot.
29  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: Artemis: Rock Band for Trekkies on: May 15, 2012, 01:21:27 AM
We tried this in our lab conference room at work today.  It is pretty awesome so far.

The first mission was on super easy and was pretty easy once we figured out we should raise shields.  Engineering is definitely the highest stress job in the group of new players as they have the ability ruin pretty much anything.

For example one of the best moments was when another ship was under attack.  Science reported the heading, I called it out and ordered warp 4.  The helm repeated the order locked it in.  "Engage!" ...  ... We sit there a second everyone looking around.  Engineering goes "Oh!" hits a button and WHAM we launch into warp 4.  Turns out the warp engines don't work without power.

We are already making plans to challenge other sites to PVP matches.

A lot more video cards have display port out now.  In that case if the iMac takes display port in you just need a standard dp to mini dp cable.

What's funny is here I've been going around telling people they WANT us to experiment with runes and skills, and constantly adjust to different situations. Apparently... they don't.  confused

This is at lvl60 - the only thing this does is removes a temp buff for finding items after beating bosses. It gives some value to trying to find an optimal build to stick with for that game session. It does NOT break the "experiment" thing - what it does is encourages people to find their balance and not depend on switching classes all the time.I see it as a mini-game to help tweakers and people who want to find the rarest of the rare to pick-and-stick-with a build, and work with a balanced party to basically "raid" for rare items - and encourage those folks to go through the game rather than constantly reloading the same level to farm a particularly easy-to-get-to-boss.

I applaud that. Well done, Blizzard - they're applying lessons learned from being the most successful (AFAIK) MMO company.

This is their solution to the farming runs people would do in D2.  This stops you from skipping right to the boss by adding an incentive to clear an area first.  Sure you could skip right to the boss, but it shouldn't be more effective than clearing the area that leads up to the boss.
