All i wanted from Sony was a console that would give me the option to upgrade as i see fit.

Sony offered the opposite, and it's not worth the extra cost to me. Let me be the one to decide if i want to buy the blu-ray add-on, and any other add-on options.

If PS3 games use Blu-ray media, then Blu-ray is no longer an add-on but integral part of PS3 console.

As for not worth the extra cost to you, then don't buy it at launch wait until the price come down at least $100.

When used to access data, then having a 2x will affect your rate of transfer accordingly.

What data? I thought we're discussing the ability to play movie on PS3 compare to Blu-ray standalone player.

Premium 360 has memory slots, basic PS3 doesn't. Premium 360 is totally expandable for future add on players and/or hard drives, the basic PS3 is reportedly non-expandable, which means you will be stuck with a blu-ray player that might not play all the movies if other companies like Time Warner decide that ICT is the way to go(no upgrade on base model to HDMI). Not too mention that having no HDMI means that the buyer won't be able enjoy DD Plus, Dolby TrueHD, or DTS-HD while watching a downscaled blu-ray movie.

With the existence of HDD, I never met anyone that actually bought XBOX's memory card. I don't think the memory slots is going to be a big advantage for XBOX. And since USB memory card reader is cheap and easy to make, I'm sure Sony will be able to over a memory card reader add-on or maybe you can use cheaper third party product($10-$15 at most). As for HDMI, if it is possible for Microsoft to add HDMI to XBOX 360, then it'll be a lot easier for Sony to add HDMI to basic PS3. Just because they said there is no option to upgrade to premium PS3 feature planned doesn't mean there is not going to be one if there is a demand for it.

You need a hardware upgrade before you can just hook up an HDMI cable and enjoy digital output.

How do you know the hardware circuit part hasn't been included in the basic PS3. If price of that circuitry isn't too expensive there is no good reason for Sony to take them out of basic PS3. I think that Sony has the HDMI circuitry in both basic and premium PS3, but choose not to provide the output for HDMI on basic PS3 to sell the premium PS3. Later on it is possible for Sony to release HDMI addon and charge like $99 for it as extra profit.

I have yet to hear of a reasonable technical explanation on how MS can implement HDMI (and therefore HDCP) with their HD-DVD add-on.  I think most are expecting that it will be component only and just hope that studios never enable the ICT flag.

Here's a stupid thought - there are DVD players (some of them in consoles) that totally ignore the 'you can't skip over these trailers stuffed at the beginning of movies' flag, thus allowing you to go straight to the main DVD menus.

Could/would Microsoft make their HD-DVD addon ignore the ICT flag, thus allowing all movies to show up in hi-def no matter the setting?

Yeah, it would be like ritual suicide on the whole copy-protection crap, but it would solve the issue, no?

I think there is a license issue that prevent that. Just like DVD manufacture can't legally make multi-region DVD players. Of course that doesn't stop some asian and china manufacturer to produce those illegal DVD players but big corporate like Sony, Microsoft, etc. can't do that.

If you want blu-ray, the $500 option shouldn't even be considered. I don't know why many get so enamored with having the included blu-ray player? Is it for the sake of having it? If blu-ray goes mainstream, who would want to be stuck with an entry-level 2x model, when you can get a stand-alone player that will be faster and of higher quality?

I have yet to hear of a reasonable technical explanation on how MS can implement HDMI (and therefore HDCP) with their HD-DVD add-on.  I think most are expecting that it will be component only and just hope that studios never enable the ICT flag.

Also, standalone Bluray Drives won't necessarilly be faster- The spec for movie playback is 1x speed so having more than that in a dedicated player doesn't buy you anything.  Higher speeds will only be notable for applications other than movie playback.  Which isn't to say that standalone players probably won't be better for other reasons but speed ain't one of them.

They already have 4x available, and the BDA(blu-ray disc association) have plans for 8x, because a faster data transfer rate is easily attainable. People won't be stuck with 1x and 2x speeds.

Future stand-alone players will be better, and faster.

As for MS, it's already been rumored that their add-on player will NOT have HDMI included.

You're wrong about future stand-alone players will be faster part. Faster drive is useless for regular movie viewing since you rarely want to play the movie faster than the default speed. Except maybe when you skip through boring parts of for example porn to find the jackpot, then you need the ability to play faster but still even using 1x drive you can play faster if the player skip a few frame at a time instead of reading each byte of data and play them faster.

Please try to find standalone DVD players in the market that is faster than the original DVD player spec.

What does the $500 PS3 not have that the XBox Premium does?  It seems like the PS3 is only $100 more, that's not even two games more anymore.  Sorry if I missed this earlier.

Also, Sony has a hard drive standard.  That was one of the big rallying XBox cries before.  Sony's system is more expensive, but has a lot more this time around.

Nothing. If you really want to do a fair comparison the 'basic' version of PS3 is not too expensive compare to premium XBOX 360 which is what it should be compared to.

Premium XBOX360 doesn't have HD-DVD or Blu-ray. Premium XBOX360 doesn't have HDMI just like the basic PS3. So 'basic' PS3 cost about the same as XBOX360 plus the HD-DVD add-on(if it is only $99).

Speaking of "hardcore", I ran across an article yesterday about how 4 out of 10 Americans play video games of some kind.  Pretty cool, pretty cool.  Then I kept on reading and they categorized "hardcore" gamers as those who play for more than three hours a week.  Isn't that a little low to classify someone as a "hardcore gamer"?  I thought so.

Anyway, I THINK I may wait on a price-drop for the PS3.  Unless there are SEVERAL - not just one or two - games that look awesome and "unmissable."

Yeah, I think play for more than three hours a week = a gamer. Play less than 3 hours a week = non gamer.

Hardcore gamers are those who play games almost daily.

As their market share dwindles, so will any 3rd party support who will be lining up to side with MS or Sony, and no, they won't say 'but we'll develop for Wii too!' I want one person to tell me you can forsee a title coming out for X360/Wii or PS3/Wii. Not.Going.To.Happen

How many AAA games come out for both DS and PSP?

And that is sidestepping the case I setup(Home consoles and portables are two ENTIRELY different beasts): my point was Nintendo's strategy to be the 'other' system in X360 & PS3 household doesn't hold up, as I defy you to name multiple games where a developer developed for Gamecube and one other console (xbox, PS2), but not the third. (And I question if RE4 counts, as it was developed for Gamecube only, then ported to the PS2 to make a cash grab at a much larger market.)

The point of owning the other/second system is that you need it to play games that are not available on the main system. So if you own X360 then you don't care about games that are X360/Wii. And if you own PS3, you don't care about playing PS3/Wii on the other system. Owning the 'Other' system goal is to play games that are available only on this 'Other' system.

Since X360 and PS3 are about as powerful then most games will be available on both system so you can choose one and you can play all multiplatform games. You choose PS3 if you prefer PS3's exclusive more than X360's ones or the other way around. If you want to be able to play all the exclusives of both X360 and PS3 then you have to be able to afford to pay for two expensive console, not everyone want to do that just to get a few more exclusive games before console prices come down at later years. But if Wii is cheap, then people who want to also play Wii exclusive will pay for the console and I think almost everyone will be interested in at least trying the new controller scheme if they can afford the console.

So you have several categories of console owner household:

1. Those that can't afford expensive console will get Wii.
2. Those that can afford one expensive console will get either X360 or PS3.
3. Those that can afford one expensive console and a second cheaper console will get Wii in addition to X360 or PS3.
4. Those that can afford two expensive console will get both X360 and PS3. Since Wii is supposed to be cheaper then most of the rich and hardcore gamers that own both X360 and PS3 will also be able to afford Wii as third system and some of them will own 3 systems.

From those category it seems like there is a small possibility that Wii will outsell either PS3 or X360 since most PS3 owner will not have X360 and most X360 owner will not have PS3, but both PS3 and X360 owners have a good chance of having Wii as the 'Other' system.

I predict it will "tank" in the sense that playstation generation (by which I mean people who grew up playing PS one/two instead of Nintendo) gamers may not like the mix of titles.  There will be plenty of simple, family friendly stuff on it, to be sure, but the PS generation gaming staples of FPS, mature RPG's, and action games won't be well represented.

That's more of what we're talking about.  With games, CD/DVD sales are the primary focus of the publishers.  With DVDs?  It's almost /all/ profit.

If the movie didn't make enough money from theaters to cover the cost then they need to try to cover that from DVD sales. And there are a lot more movies that didn't make it in theaters than those that make it. Now you can probably claim that for movies that earned profit in theater release then they can afford to release DVD at US$ 1.5 each but why would they do that?

For a mostly capitalist nation, I'm surprised that Americans think that corporate making more money = bad.smile

DVDs are cheap and you don't need something like this to proves that. Pirated movie DVD is sold for about $ 0.50 here in Jakarta.

But while DVDs are cheap to manufacture, shooting movies are not.

You can say the same with computer and console games. Those cd/dvd media are cheap to produce so why they want us to pay $30-$50? The answer is that you need to develop the game first before you can cheaply duplicate them.

Sword:  Zombieslayer (upgraded Zombiesbane)
Spear: Demon Spear
Boomerang:  don't bring a Boomerang to a sword fight.

Axe: Moon Axe (technically you could get a King Axe, but that costs you a Slime King Crown to alchemize, which is royally not worth it.)
Scythe: Steel Scythe
Hammer:  dunno, Hammers suck.

Everytime I read this, I laugh, because my hero was using a boomerang for this fight (I did have him on swords for backup though; but I maxxed the "courage" skillset before I did the "swords" one, and put a few points into boomerang for the ATK stat boost), and on my playthrough Yangus was focused on hammers/clubs.  biggrin

Same here, I beat this fight using boomerang and Jessica with whip. With the hit all weapons, it is actually easy with the first phase with the two boss copies.

I've never played Animal Crossing so I have no idea what a bell is or what it's worth, but a million bells sounds like a lot!  How do they get a million bells?

If you have the tool to play homebrew DS games, you can use some tool to copy the AC DS save file and then edit it.

But if you're not a cheater, you can earn money easily on AC after some preparation.

Money making tips:

1. Fishing is a great to earn money, you can net at least 100000 bells per day and more if you spend more hours/day. Not the right choice for players that can't play more than one hour per day.

2. Foreign fruit orchard. Best for those that don't have much play time/day.

Foreign fruit sell for 500 bells each and one tree grow 3 fruits/3 days. So you can make on average 500 bells per day on each tree that you plan.

One town can have about 12-14 trees per 16x16 squares(if you want to keep your town in perfect condition if you don't care about that you can fill up with more than 14 trees per 16x16). And your town have 16 of that 16x16 square.

So you can have about 192-224 trees if you keep it your town in perfect condition or more than that if you don't care. That is on average 96000-112000 bells per day.

Need preparation to do it, but I managed to fill my town start with one single apple that I got as a gift. If you are like me only have one foreign fruit(if you don't have friends to wifi with), then you better maximize your chance of successful growing the tree by cutting down and existing tree then plan that foreign fruit in the same spot as the tree you cut down.

At first I plant all apples that I got and don't sell them. Now I have about 200 apple trees while still keeping about 10 orange trees(native of my town) and less than 10 non fruit trees(you get bees/money(100 bells)/furniture randomly if you shake these non fruit trees).

3. Talk with the animals and be friend with them. Sometime they give you gift and you can sell them. Or you can write to each of the animals each day and give them gift(anything cheap), they sometime give you something back. But these are not a good money making trick, so I only do them for fun.

4. Digging up fossils and sell them, you get 5 new digging spots per day so you can get 1-5 fossils each day depend on your luck.

5. Selling shells. Not much money, but easy to do just walk pass your coastline and pick up any shells you find then go sell them. You can do this several times per day and each pass only take less than 10 minutes.

Currently most games on console that are multiple disc are mostly caused by the in game FMV. Now if PS3 games use HD quality in game movie, then it is unlikely that Microsoft can compress them much smaller than the best video codec available and still retain same video quality.

Microsoft probably can compress at most 10%-20% more that the standard video compression available and that'll be pretty much a miracle to be able to do even that.

I guess if Bluray games become reality, then XBOX 360 version will have lower quality video like 720p vs 1080p or lower fps on XBOX 360 version to fit on DVD media.

I don't pretend to be an expert on this subject by MS has said on more than one occasion that they believe compression will solve most if not all of the apparent capacity gap between standard DVD's and HD-DVD/Blu Ray technology.

Considering that PC games aren't even pushing DVD technology to it's limits yet, I'm not sure this is an issue we'll have to deal with anytime soon.

If it is possible to have high quality HD video and make it fit on DVD with this Microsoft secret compression thing, then it is stupid for media company to push HD video on HD-DVD/Blu Ray. It would be a lot cheaper to produce a Microsoft compression compatible 'Super' DVD player instead that play HD Video of same quality of HD-DVD/Blu Ray's video but run from cheap DVD media.

As for comparing to PC games, PC games in general have lower quality FMV. Most multiplatform games have better quality FMV in the console version than the PC version. The reason is to make it fit in CD-ROM media.

Follow that PC games example, we can expect multiplatform games will have better quality on Blu-Ray based PS3 and lower quality FMV in DVD based XBOX 360.

The only reason I would have liked to have seen an HD-DVD player (or Blu-ray even) in the original Xbox 360 is so games took take advantage of all that extra space. The way it's going now a lot of developers are running out of space on the double layer discs, what's going to happen in 2 or 3 years from now when the all ps3's come with blu-ray (giving developers up to 50gb per disc to do whatever they want) and the xbox 360 still has just an old-fashioned dvd player?
Yeah probably multiple-disc games although I still think it's a shame, who wants to get up and change discs in the middle of a game?

You're assuming that there isn't a way around the apparent size limitation of the standard DVD disk.  You may be right, but MS has repeatedly stated that they think there are compression techniques that will allow for much greater content capacity.  Seems to be the kind of thing a software giant like MS would be able to pull off.

I just watched DOA4 on a local console store display. Wow,  I want to buy XBOX360 now, it cost around $500 here and plus the game it'll about $560.

Buying XBOX360 in Indonesia is probably stupid at this time since if I got a faulty one, it is going to be very hard to exchange it. Local store here don't give warranty on imported console machine and sending it back to Microsoft for repair is going to be a big problem.

I'm glad I didn't have money and my credit card are currently maxxed out when I visited the store. I would probably take XBOX360 and DOA4 home if I have any way to pay for it.slywink

It is pretty much why I love EA.smile Everytime a new expansion is out, that give me about 1 week entertainment. That is far longer than most FPS games which I either finish in 2 days or I am bored and stop playing.

They probably just buy someone else's design from some China/Taiwan company and put their brand on it so that they can steal more from dumb investors who still think Infinium is for real instead of a scam.
