1001  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Where is your console? on: July 01, 2006, 01:01:23 AM
Everything in my bedroom except the XBOX 360 which I still leave at my office(not home office but another location where I work 5 days a week).

I'll eventually take the XBOX 360 home once my co-workers are bored of the few games that I have for the 360.

Chalk me up as another that credits Dragonlance for my love of fantasy.

I don't know the guy that's playing Tas, but he and the guy playing Flint better be stupendous, or I'm writing letters!

And Raistlin.... I don't even want to think how bad they could potentially botch that one up...

Dragonlance books were my first novel that I read in English. Dragonlance also introduced me to fantasy and I didn't know anything about PnP RPG back then.

I was always wondering why that stupid D&D movie didn't go with Dragonlance (or at least some D&D world setting).

It would have been cool to see a live action DL, but animated works too.

Me too. Dragonlance books are my favorite, I think they can make a good trilogy movies using the story from the books. It'll be like Lords of the Rings plus the good guy become villain twist of Star Wars with Raistlin character.

I couldn't find any Forgotten Realms setting books that can come close of the Dragonlance one. Even the famous Dark Elf story is boring to read.

I'm not that good at the game, but I played a lot against other players which have average skills (nothing close to level of high rating players on Live)  and so far seem like the best way to win is to adapt to each player's style and predict what they're going to do based on what they have been doing before.

A LOT.

For a bad player like me, Alpha-152 is all about luck. Sometime she keep using the long and deadly combo which mean defeat to me, but sometime she doesn't use those "cheating" combo and I can manage a win.

Some characters also have easier time against Alpha-152 than the others or maybe I'm just better with some characters.

A quick scan of the page's source code gave me this link:

Quick scan on apple site to download video won't work in that way. That file is just a pointer to the actual file, to download video from apple site directly you need to find out the actual filename. You can do that by opening up the file in notepad or other text editor. In the case of Spiderman 3 trailer, the actual filename is spider-man_3-tsr_h640w.mov then you replace the name of the file from above link with the actual filename and download from there.

For the Spiderman 3 trailer, that is:

Entrapment
#  To lure into performing a previously or otherwise uncontemplated illegal act.

The uncontemplated part is a big key, these men went onto the internet with the intention of finding minors to solicit sex with. It would only be entrapment if the police somehow tricked/forced these predators into going onto the internet to look for minors. These men were predisposed to doing this without the police's help, they just happened to bump into the police's undercover agent, not much different from an undercover drug bust. Also remember that the undercover agents didn't go after these men, they came to the agents online of there own free will, they solicited the sex, not the agent.

Intent is another key in the determination of whether or not this is a crime or entrapment by police. I mean you realize they clear all of this past every high ranking State Attorney and necessarry Judge before moving forward right?

If Intent wasn't used then we could never use undercover cops in things like drug busts. I wouldn't worry about your civil liberties being trampled here as this is not entrapment.

How do you know these people went on internet with intention to find minor to solicit sex with? How can you know that the target didn't get on the internet for harmless chatting  and being seduced by this fake "14 years old"?

For example even in the #gonegold channel, there was at least one case of harmless chatting/flirting with girl that happen to be a minor which ended up with a real life visit to meet the girl.

If you stop playing at that level, then you miss out on some great missions later on. As for repetitive gameplay, what you expect? You're playing a hitman so of course all the missions are about Mr. 47 killing marks. But while you're tasked to do the same thing every mission, unlike previous Hitman games, this time the missions are vary enough to be interesting.

Also if anyone want a challenge, they can try to finish most missions by limiting to staging accidental death of the marks (possible to do in all missions except maybe one of the marks in the White House mission).

And so the heat spread out evenly through the buildings, along each floor, down each floor, from top to bottom?

But I don't know anything. I'm not an engineer. Maybe once the ball gets rolling, so to speak, as the tops of the buildings start to come down where the internal structure is weakest, it really doesn't matter how strong or weak the lower levels are - they just get sandwiched, compressed, and add to the mass coming down, keeping the "clean", vertical destruction going.

My theory is that heat spread evenly through the steel skeleton of the building. Even if the fire is uneven, steel is a good heat conductor, it'll spread to the whole steel structure.

And to answer raydude's post ... well, I'd just figure the horizontal, I dunno ... span, range, scope, whatever ... of the collapse would have been greater. Especially for the tower that was clipped off to the side. Unequal damage meaning unsymmetrical structural integrity?

And I'm not talking about anything drastic here, more just one corner above the damaged section giving way before the opposing corner, which would bring about an uneven collapse, and mainly a sort of fold in the tower. Considering the damage, I find it odd how equal/symmetrical the fall of both towers is. They drop right down, and I find that strange.

That's all.

That probably can be explained in that the collapse was not caused by the impact since the building was designed to be able to withstand impact from airplane, but was caused by structural weakening due to heat from fire.

As we know steel like most metal are efficient heat conductor so any increase in temperature in one section of the steel is probably going to be distributed almost equally to all sections. When the temperature of steel reach high enough to weaken the steel until it can't hold the weight of the building, it'll collapse down pretty much evenly.

1029  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PS3: We're Sony. You know you'll buy it anyway. on: May 22, 2006, 03:17:55 AM
I think Sony probably doesn't make mistake with the high launch price.

If the PS3 is going to be sold out due to the limited production capacity, it makes sense that as a seller you should try to keep the price as high as possible. Instead of people making money off ebaying limited PS3, Sony will take some of those money.

When Microsoft is feeling confidence with their price advantage, Sony can cut the price so that PS3 will cost the same as XBOX360. If Microsoft cut $100 price off for X360, Sony will cut $200 to match the price. And end result is that even if the price is the same, the consumers will think that PS3 is better value purchase since it was $100 more expensive than X360.

If PS3 games use Blu-ray media, then Blu-ray is no longer an add-on but integral part of PS3 console.

Premium 360 has memory slots, basic PS3 doesn't. Premium 360 is totally expandable for future add on players and/or hard drives, the basic PS3 is reportedly non-expandable, which means you will be stuck with a blu-ray player that might not play all the movies if other companies like Time Warner decide that ICT is the way to go(no upgrade on base model to HDMI). Not too mention that having no HDMI means that the buyer won't be able enjoy DD Plus, Dolby TrueHD, or DTS-HD while watching a downscaled blu-ray movie.

With the existence of HDD, I never met anyone that actually bought XBOX's memory card. I don't think the memory slots is going to be a big advantage for XBOX. And since USB memory card reader is cheap and easy to make, I'm sure Sony will be able to over a memory card reader add-on or maybe you can use cheaper third party product($10-$15 at most). As for HDMI, if it is possible for Microsoft to add HDMI to XBOX 360, then it'll be a lot easier for Sony to add HDMI to basic PS3. Just because they said there is no option to upgrade to premium PS3 feature planned doesn't mean there is not going to be one if there is a demand for it.

You need a hardware upgrade before you can just hook up an HDMI cable and enjoy digital output.

How do you know the hardware circuit part hasn't been included in the basic PS3. If price of that circuitry isn't too expensive there is no good reason for Sony to take them out of basic PS3. I think that Sony has the HDMI circuitry in both basic and premium PS3, but choose not to provide the output for HDMI on basic PS3 to sell the premium PS3. Later on it is possible for Sony to release HDMI addon and charge like $99 for it as extra profit.

I have yet to hear of a reasonable technical explanation on how MS can implement HDMI (and therefore HDCP) with their HD-DVD add-on.  I think most are expecting that it will be component only and just hope that studios never enable the ICT flag.

Here's a stupid thought - there are DVD players (some of them in consoles) that totally ignore the 'you can't skip over these trailers stuffed at the beginning of movies' flag, thus allowing you to go straight to the main DVD menus.

Could/would Microsoft make their HD-DVD addon ignore the ICT flag, thus allowing all movies to show up in hi-def no matter the setting?

Yeah, it would be like ritual suicide on the whole copy-protection crap, but it would solve the issue, no?

I think there is a license issue that prevent that. Just like DVD manufacture can't legally make multi-region DVD players. Of course that doesn't stop some asian and china manufacturer to produce those illegal DVD players but big corporate like Sony, Microsoft, etc. can't do that.

If you want blu-ray, the $500 option shouldn't even be considered. I don't know why many get so enamored with having the included blu-ray player? Is it for the sake of having it? If blu-ray goes mainstream, who would want to be stuck with an entry-level 2x model, when you can get a stand-alone player that will be faster and of higher quality?

I have yet to hear of a reasonable technical explanation on how MS can implement HDMI (and therefore HDCP) with their HD-DVD add-on.  I think most are expecting that it will be component only and just hope that studios never enable the ICT flag.

Also, standalone Bluray Drives won't necessarilly be faster- The spec for movie playback is 1x speed so having more than that in a dedicated player doesn't buy you anything.  Higher speeds will only be notable for applications other than movie playback.  Which isn't to say that standalone players probably won't be better for other reasons but speed ain't one of them.

They already have 4x available, and the BDA(blu-ray disc association) have plans for 8x, because a faster data transfer rate is easily attainable. People won't be stuck with 1x and 2x speeds.

Future stand-alone players will be better, and faster.

As for MS, it's already been rumored that their add-on player will NOT have HDMI included.

You're wrong about future stand-alone players will be faster part. Faster drive is useless for regular movie viewing since you rarely want to play the movie faster than the default speed. Except maybe when you skip through boring parts of for example porn to find the jackpot, then you need the ability to play faster but still even using 1x drive you can play faster if the player skip a few frame at a time instead of reading each byte of data and play them faster.

Please try to find standalone DVD players in the market that is faster than the original DVD player spec.

What does the $500 PS3 not have that the XBox Premium does?  It seems like the PS3 is only $100 more, that's not even two games more anymore.  Sorry if I missed this earlier.

Also, Sony has a hard drive standard.  That was one of the big rallying XBox cries before.  Sony's system is more expensive, but has a lot more this time around.

Nothing. If you really want to do a fair comparison the 'basic' version of PS3 is not too expensive compare to premium XBOX 360 which is what it should be compared to.

Premium XBOX360 doesn't have HD-DVD or Blu-ray. Premium XBOX360 doesn't have HDMI just like the basic PS3. So 'basic' PS3 cost about the same as XBOX360 plus the HD-DVD add-on(if it is only $99).

As their market share dwindles, so will any 3rd party support who will be lining up to side with MS or Sony, and no, they won't say 'but we'll develop for Wii too!' I want one person to tell me you can forsee a title coming out for X360/Wii or PS3/Wii. Not.Going.To.Happen

How many AAA games come out for both DS and PSP?

And that is sidestepping the case I setup(Home consoles and portables are two ENTIRELY different beasts): my point was Nintendo's strategy to be the 'other' system in X360 & PS3 household doesn't hold up, as I defy you to name multiple games where a developer developed for Gamecube and one other console (xbox, PS2), but not the third. (And I question if RE4 counts, as it was developed for Gamecube only, then ported to the PS2 to make a cash grab at a much larger market.)

The point of owning the other/second system is that you need it to play games that are not available on the main system. So if you own X360 then you don't care about games that are X360/Wii. And if you own PS3, you don't care about playing PS3/Wii on the other system. Owning the 'Other' system goal is to play games that are available only on this 'Other' system.

Since X360 and PS3 are about as powerful then most games will be available on both system so you can choose one and you can play all multiplatform games. You choose PS3 if you prefer PS3's exclusive more than X360's ones or the other way around. If you want to be able to play all the exclusives of both X360 and PS3 then you have to be able to afford to pay for two expensive console, not everyone want to do that just to get a few more exclusive games before console prices come down at later years. But if Wii is cheap, then people who want to also play Wii exclusive will pay for the console and I think almost everyone will be interested in at least trying the new controller scheme if they can afford the console.

So you have several categories of console owner household:

1. Those that can't afford expensive console will get Wii.
2. Those that can afford one expensive console will get either X360 or PS3.
3. Those that can afford one expensive console and a second cheaper console will get Wii in addition to X360 or PS3.
4. Those that can afford two expensive console will get both X360 and PS3. Since Wii is supposed to be cheaper then most of the rich and hardcore gamers that own both X360 and PS3 will also be able to afford Wii as third system and some of them will own 3 systems.

From those category it seems like there is a small possibility that Wii will outsell either PS3 or X360 since most PS3 owner will not have X360 and most X360 owner will not have PS3, but both PS3 and X360 owners have a good chance of having Wii as the 'Other' system.
