Did anyone pick up the new You Don't Know Jack today? I was going to get it on PC, but it doesn't have multiplayer (ugh). I picked up the PS3 version instead if anyone's looking for games. (PSN id is Vesper-P).

Weird. I'm still getting the error message and get the same thing if I type the direct IP.
Typing the IP will not work, because the forum software is setup with references to " www.quartertothree.com", so it ends up trying to resolve DNS again. The only way around this is to add an entry to your system's HOSTS file. For Windows, this is in "c:\windows\system32\drivers\etc" and on OSX it's in "/etc". Note that you'll need elevated/administrator permissions on Vista or OSX to edit this file and add an entry. Just add a line that says: 64.131.72.156 www.quartertothree.com

if anyone needs any additional motivation (and you own an iPod nano).....buy the Nike+ kit for running. that's an incredible piece of equipment thats really motivational. don't need Nike shoes like they originally told everyone. fabulous tool to help keep you going with your running program. I just bought a refurb 2G Nano for this purpose, but haven't ordered the Nike kit yet as I wasn't sure about using the sensor on non NikePlus shoes. Do you have a recommendation for shoepouch/etc? The ones I've seen on Amazon have both good and bad reviews (some people claim they don't work well at all, other say they work great). I was halfway being lured to get some Nike+ shoes, but my Asics have been working quite well so far. Any advice on this subject would be appreciated.

Wow, Turtle.. I just started this same exact plan recently. Since my twins were born (January 06) I have done little to no exercise, so this is the plan I selected to try to get into shape. I haven't really changed my eating habits too much, but my weight was maintaining before, so adding exercise should help bring off the pounds.
Today I started week 4. Be prepared for an extreme ramp up in difficult. I'm doing my workouts by time, not distance so last week had a total of 9 minutes of running. Week 4 has 16 minutes of running, in 3 and 5 minute segments. I was really worried about this before heading out tonight (especially since it was hot out), but I made it! I feel like this was a major turning point being able to pull off 1.5 miles (approx) of actual jogging with only a few breaks to split it up. It was difficult, but now I'm confident that I'll be able to do it 2 more times this week and head on to next...

How about an SVideo cable? I don't have an HDTV, but I'd rather not deal with a composite connection. I know the Gamecube component cables are different than the Wii since the cube had that separate digital port. How about svideo? Is it the same cable between Gamecube & Wii? If not, when will they be available?

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Getting a 360 this weekend.. I hope..

Allegedly, there's going to be a large supply of 360 systems released on Sunday. I'm hearing 100-150 units per Best Buy as an example. Anyone else know what's going on? I really don't want to go through the hassle of waiting in a line or anything, but would be willing to head over there when they open at least.
Any other stores that are supposed to be getting units?

This is a great game with great components. The general consensus from BGG is that it's on the easy side when you know what you're doing, but still fun. It's also in need of a FAQ for a few rules clarifications. I've only played 1 3-player game and we lost, but had a blast. This weekend we'll be playing 4 players. Looking forward to it!

We've played TI3 several times and love it, although we've never had more than 3 players. ISC has never been a problem in our games, mostly because none of us are interested in "WINWINWIN" and would rather play it like Master of Orion - slow build up of your empire. By choosing the Imperial Strategy card, you are forgoing many of the much better situational cards (Logistics & Technology in particular). Unless your goal is to race to 10 victory points and thumb your nose at people, it won't be an issue. The only real problem if people ignore it entirely is that new objectives won't be revealed.
That being said, we did try a variant where the ISC worked different - the one that Fantasy Flight suggested. I thought it worked well, and exposed all of the objective cards from the start.
The game is great fun and definately worth picking up. I'm hoping to someday get more than 3 people together for a bigger game.

Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PSP First Impressions!

I'm a little concerned that the games aren't necessarily portable friendly enough and that could hurt the longterm viability of the PSP. The key to this situation is the use of Sleep mode. Being able to shut down the system at ANY time and immediately resume later is awesome. Sure it takes a bit to get into the game initially, but if you just use sleep from then on, you're good to go. (Except for changing games, of course..)

The only problem you might have with just getting a better set of headphones is that I've tried six or seven different sets with my PSP and none have had the rich bass sound that the white Sony ones have had - even another pair of Sony headphones. Were you trying GOOD headphones, or just other earbuds? My studio Sony headphones (made for DJs) sound awesome with the PSP.

I noticed this today on mine. It happened right after powering on after being in sleep mode. Lumines sounded all messed up and I had to quit out and restart it. Not sure if it's a freak occurance or what. (Incidentally, I put it in sleep while at the pause menu, if it matters.)

The card idea is appealing to me, too. One of my favorite board games of recent times is Memoir 44 (WW2 tactical game). But the game is determined by making use of what cards you have in your hand (along with some strategy). It's a fun mechanic.

I didn't preorder a PSP, because back then I told myself I didn't want one. The hype is eating away at my soul though, and I think I'll be looking for one on Thursday.
Do you think they'll be difficult to find "in the wild"? Or will they be just about everywhere? I was thinking I could hit Target or Walmart over lunch....

1) The Wire - If you like The Shield, you'll love this. Extremely well done cop show from HBO.
2) Buffy/Angel - Whiteboyskim suggested the best seasons, but if you're going to watch these, you really should do it right and watch the whole shebang. The entire thing is story arc, so you'd be missing out on background information and trying to figure out what's going on by jumping into a later season. Just recognize that the first season of Buffy isn't the best, nor are the last 2. Angel season #1 = Buffy Season #4 timing wise (there's some crossover episodes).
3) Curb Your Enthusiasm - HBO Comedy - It's Seinfeld reincarnated.
4) Dead Like Me - Showtime Comedy/Drama about a group of grim reapers and trying to "survive" their every day life as being undead. Very funny.

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Progressive Scan DVD Player: Worth Switching?
|
on: January 20, 2005, 07:09:09 AM
|
On a similar note, has anyone tried one of those upscaling DVD players? Just wondering if they provide any noticeable improvement, or if it's just a gimmick. My opinion is gimmick. DVDs only hold 480 lines of resolution (480p), so upscaling it to 720p isn't going to make it look any better. It's just showing the same information multiple times. (Just my opinion of course). And if you have a TV capable of showing a progressive signal and you don't have a progressive scan DVD player, you're REALLY missing out! (Note: To benefit from this you'll need to use component / dvi / hdmi hookups)

Vesper, I don't like hip-hop too much neither, so which PS2 version would be better for me. And which pad? You can get any of the PS2 games. DDRMax, DDRMax2, and DDRMax Extreme are all good. I think 2 is my favorite because I like more of the songs. The pad I have that I really like is available here: Two BNS DX-Xtreme Pads - $89 Two BNS DX-Xtreme Pads with DDRMax2 - $129 Can get singles, of course. And they have just about every bundle imaginable. If you can justify the cost, I highly recommend pads of this type. The flat ones are ok, but have a tendency to slip around and don't register as well with really fast songs. It says 1" insert. I swear mine are thicker than that. Maybe I'm delusional.

Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW: Play the Horde
|

Not even close. On the closest server, the Alliance has a 1.3:1 advantage. Most estimates on the forum guess that 1.3:1 is very optimistic for the Horde, and it could go as far as a 2:1 advantage for the Alliance.
On my server, Mal'Ganis, Horde outnumbers alliance. As of right now, Wowcensus reports it as 6023 Horde, 4902 Alliance.

Another vote for Battlestar Galactica. I've been watching the series uh.. in advance <cough>.. It's FANTASTIC. It's giving Firefly a run for its money in the "best sci-fi show ever" category. Can't wait to rewatch on Scifi. I have the Tivo all set. If you didn't see the miniseries last year, make sure to catch it. I believe Sci-Fi is rerunning it this week in prep for the series on Friday. In fact, it might be on RIGHT NOW. It's also available on DVD for rental/purchase. But definately watch it before starting on the series.
You won't be sorry. (Well unless you're one of those nerdy "the original BSG or death" types. Look at it as a new show.)

Don't worry, your man card isn't in jeopardy for liking DDR. Lots of guys play it, including me.
In fact, DDR is my primary means of exercise. It's a fantastic aerobic workout that burns calories at a very good rate. Generally speaking, I play everything on "Standard" mode, since some of those songs still kick my ass. I have 3 of the PS2 games and one of the Xbox ones. I like the PS2 DDR games much better. The is much more dance oriented than the Ultramix games which are more slanted towards "hip hop." I have trouble keeping in sync with it. But some people love it.
I'm not sure how "good" of pads you got, but there's a pretty wide variety available if you ever want to upgrade. All the way up to metal monstrosities that replicate the arcade machine. The pads I have are Buy & Shop's DX pads, which have 3" foam padding inside. Works quite well.
Enjoy!

Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Greatest Universal Remote Ever!
|
on: January 07, 2005, 03:55:57 AM

Can I go from room to room in my house without re-programming it like the Pronto can? Sure, with the following limitations: 1) It can only store codes for 15 devices. 2) You'd have to setup duplicate activities. For example, "DVD-Room A" would be setup for your Sony TV and Denon DVD player. "DVD-Room B" would be setup for your Toshiba TV and Panasonic DVD player, etc. This will also mean you'll end up having to pick activities from the LCD screen for all secondary rooms since the primary buttons will almost certainly be mapped to your "main" room. I think the real problem will be #1 if you have several setups.

Got my 680 on Monday. Had it up and running in under 15 minutes. A few tweak sessions (timing, remapping buttons) but that's it. It's fantastic. Just gotta get used to where the buttons are without looking now. The 880 looks nice, but I don't think it has enough hard buttons. I've had both worlds (Pronto - almost no hard buttons and the 680)- having to look at the remote to do stuff sucks.

Well that sucks... does anyone know how the 676/680 handle Tivo? Extremely well. Don't listen to the Logitech hype that the 688 is the "DVR Remote". The 676 and 680 both work a lot better for DVR use. In fact, the 680 even has labels for "Repeat" and "Skip" (ie- jump back 8 seconds, skip on the Tivo remote). The transport buttons are all right near the cursor on the 680 for easy use and it is getting rave reviews from Tivo users. That's my main use for the remote. (Should be showing up Monday.. I'll have more feedback then)
