Watched a few of the videos.  Strikes me as highly staged and distinctly phoney.  They need a better actor.

I agree.  I didn't even find it funny.
2  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [XBOX360] November Launch Title List on: October 27, 2005, 05:50:39 PM
Says 720p on my screen.
3  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Oblivion Preview... Release date? on: October 27, 2005, 05:47:38 PM

At the very end, it says:

Elder Scrolls IV Oblivion will be out for PC on 25 November and is released for Xbox 360 in December

I don't know if that's part of the preview, or something Games Radar just decided to throw in there.

And, from a post on the ES forums:

Here is the standard set of specs used in what appears to be the "standard" dev machine, according to the German magazine GameStar:

AMD AthlonXP 2500+ or 2600+ (Barton Core, 333MHz FSB)
1024MB (1GB) RAM
ATi Radeon 9800pro, AGP with 256MB video RAM

The above settings would likely run the game at a fairly decent clip, and more importantly, if such machines are in use for development, they obviously run the games with all the settings "turned on."

All of this may not mean anything and might just be more dumb rumors.
4  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / F.E.A.R or System Shock 2 which one is King in scare factor? on: October 27, 2005, 05:06:39 PM

Sissies, all. System Shock 2 was monotonous until the reveal of SHODAN, at which point it kicks ass, but then goes back down the tube. Atmospheric? Sure. Scary? Not even close.

F.E.A.R. for teh win between these two, though I consider F.E.A.R. more intense and freaky than actually scary.
Wait, so SS2 is monotonous and FEAR isn't?

I think you might really be factually wrong on this one.

I'd actually have to agree.

FEAR was nothing but monotonous for me.  It was a huge disappointment when all was said and done.  I found it far too predictable.  And then the middle of the game was nothing but fire fights (without the scare or much plotline).

I can't believe this.  My alignment meter is less than a quarter from the bottom and I've fucking met and assisted Bladed Thesis (Zither of Discord quest), the creator of the entire "Way of the Closed Fist".  How can he say I'm not ready to learn the way of his stupid skill?

Can I ever go back to Tien's Landing after leaving?
8  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Essential Xbox games? on: June 27, 2005, 06:10:18 PM
I decided to go a tad bit more expensive than what I was planning and picked up Jade Empire. I loved Bioware's RPGs on the PC, so I figured I'd give their Xbox RPG a go.

The guy asked me if I wanted to buy a GameStop card, I told him no because I don't really play the Xbox very often and that I'm more of a computer guy...

"DID YOU HEAR THE SPECS ON THE NEW XBOX?!" (Yeah, I heard them when you told the last customer)

I just prefer PC games, I can't play Battlefield 2 on an Xbox, atleast not to the same scale as the PC version.

That's great.

I just know he's one of those guys that instantly came in his pants the minute they announced the specs on the new systems, launched IM and told all his friends (even the non-gamers), then called the rest up, and went into work later that day and told everyone about it.

9  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Essential Xbox games? on: June 26, 2005, 06:42:07 PM
I bought an Xbox a while ago for Halo and found out that I didn't really care for the game, so it has been collecting dust for the past few years. Today, I decided I'll move it right next to my PC and play it when I can't find something else to play.

So, considering I only own 5 games for it, I'm wanting suggestions.

My biggest criteria is that it has to be older. I don't want to rush out and pay $50 for a game, I want games that have gone down in price. Anything else goes (Any genre).

I already own:

Halo 2
Splinter Cell
Fuzion Frenzy
Spy Hunter

Okay. I guess that's it. I'm in. Now if I could just find a freakin' copy.EB,gamestop, 2 BB's, and a circuit city, and no WOW to be found. Bastards.

I'd suggest trying to find a place online to get it.  It's sold out in most places and there won't be any more copies going out until Blizzard makes a few new servers and runs some tests (According the the press release they had on their site).
13  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Square-Enix's new MMORPG- Fantasy Earth:The Ring of Dominion on: January 11, 2005, 08:56:34 PM
I saw the top half of the first screenshot and instantly thought "Looks cool, the art direction is a little different."  Then I scrolled down and saw the anime characters and bam, I have no interest in it.

For some reason, anime characters bother the hell out of me.  Especially in an MMO.
14  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / GTA2 now free on: January 11, 2005, 08:47:53 AM
That's good news.  I personally enjoyed the GTA series more when it was just the simple overhead shooter.  I never got into the GTA3, VC, or SA craze.

16  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WISH gets canceled after 8 days of beta on: January 10, 2005, 05:11:51 AM
Yeah, I agree.  The big two are hurting everyone, and I also agree that it's probably mostly WoW.  EQ2's customers are probably more of the hardcore players that have been playing MMOs for a while now.  WoW has a bit of that and probably a lot of the Blizzard fans that neve rplayed MMOs.
17  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Anyone else in the Wish beta? on: January 08, 2005, 03:24:40 AM
I'm in the beta.

I've downloaded the client and never installed it.  WoW is enough MMO to keep me happy, considering I never cared for the original Wish beta that happened a while back.
18  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / WoW - The Rogue Class on: January 07, 2005, 10:57:33 AM
A quick question --

Supposedly with stun, the first time it's 100% effective, then it drops from there until it isn't effective at all.

So if it's a 2 second stun, it works for the full two seconds the first time, then 1 second the second time it procs, then less than a second from there.  So unless it's a caster, the stun would be pretty meaningless.

Have you noticed this?  Is this only with the bigger stuns, like Gouge?

if ss is your main attack and you use daggers, you are massively hurting yourself.

ss is an instant attack so your speed is useless.

lets look at it this way. You have a really nice 80 dmg dagger. i have a pretty nice 120 dmg mace. you do 80 dmg every 4 seconds which is 20 dps. I do 120 dmg every 4 seconds which is 30dps...

By your math, we both attack the same ammount of times in 4 seconds, but my dagger is almost twice as fast as your mace, so I'm actually throwing down a lot more hits, with many of them also dropping poison, which makes up for any lower damage, plus I can also SnD, which means I hit even faster.  It's all a gamble really, one I am actually going to test out, but with swords instead of dagger once I hit level 30. We'll see how it goes.

Sinister stike is not based on speed. so the higher damage you do per hit, the higher your dps.

daggers in my experience are harder to find (good ones at least) so chances are the mace also has higher dps.

Thus, the mace is doing higher damage with ss and the same or more damage with default attacks. You proc poison more with daggers, but not that much more. Riposte also does more damage with maces Tongue

Koz: this is why ss mace builds are better at soloing. The only way you will compete against a mace user when you are using daggers is by using backstab.

What he's saying is that you may hit harder with your SS, but he's hitting more often in between each SS, and procing more poison because of it.

So you may do 30dps with your SS while he does 20dps, but he probably threw twice the number of swings AND procced more poison in between.

Damage wise, I'm not really convinced the difference is that big.  However, the stun is very tempting.

I have a level 18 Rogue, a level 32 rogue, and a level 12 rogue.  Currently, I had the level 18 and 32 rogues specced exactly the same.  But I'm very tempted to respec the 18 rogue for more of a combat build.  If only I could save up 1g.

Cosmos has a lot of extra, unneeded crap in it.

So I just disable it all.  I just use the second bar, the side bars, and few small other additions.  I love all of the options for it, it lets me customize where the bars go, that way I can decide where to put them instead of the mod maker deciding where to put them.

24  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / flight sim question on: December 18, 2004, 10:02:59 PM
IL2: Sturmovik  (Pacific Fighters is the latest version of it, Forgotten Battles is the second)

Definitely the best of the WW2 flight sims I've played.  The manual isn't so hot, though.  So I'd suggest spending some time on the forums, they usually have links to good sites.

The difficulty is also very scalable, so you can play it as an arcade shooter, a full on realistic sim, or somewhere between.

I'm pretty convinced AO is one of the most underrated MMOs ever.  It sucked when it was release, but Funcom really managed to pull it together.  It's definitely the best Sci fi mmo out there.

I never got the "freedom" people talk about in Farcry. The places that don't have anything to do with the main game are just jungle and shoreline. Its fun to explore for awhile but there's no other reason to wander and it got boring with nothing to reward exploring. You still had to go to a specific place and do a specific thing in order to move forward like any FPS. Its nice to look at but it was style and not much substance for me.

They mean the fact that maps were wide open so that you could go about attacking a camp from any direction, instead of being lead straight into it without any other options.

I'm so sick of TS's voice quality that I refuse to play with people who use TS.
28  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / So I just finished Unreal II on: December 15, 2004, 05:42:08 AM
Yeah, I really don't see what made Halo such a "great" game but Unreal 2 is bashed.  Both games were pretty average.  Not that it's a bad thing to be average, but I don't think Halo deserved the praise it got.
29  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Far Cry for those who have finished HL2 on: December 15, 2004, 05:40:10 AM
Eh, I also tried Far Cry.  I got fairly far in and had a good time.  But it never grabbed me like HL2 did.  Freedom doesn't mean much to me if the gameplay is the same as every other FPS out there.

I thought it was a pretty good FPS experience.  Nothing revolutionary, but I had fun playing it.

You can download the Extended Multi-Player pack free.  I didn't try it, but if you are looking for even more milage out of your $2.50 (!) you might give it a look.

From the site:
The XMP "Expanded Multiplayer" addition to Unreal II: The Awakening incorporates a class-based multiplayer system into the single-player title.

If you picked up the "Special Edition" then you already have this.

XMP kicks ass, although I never really got into it once it was released.  I'm the type that moves on to new games quick.

But I beta tested it and had a blast.  It's too bad they didn't release it with the game, XMP may have been a hit otherwise.

As for Unreal 2, I posted my feelings on the same version of the OO thread  Tongue

Which is the very reason I shelved my level 15 warrior and started a Night Elf Rogue. I got sick of losing half my health to mobs that were right at my level. So far at level 5 I am very happy with my new character.

That makes me sad.  I played a warrior through most of Alpha and Beta, and damn did they kick ass.  Especially when they allowed charge to be used in combat.  Well, they were actually way too strong.  But still...!

I remember soloing things 3 - 4 levels above me.  If I was soloing things of equal level, I could do so nonstop without ever having to sit down and break.  Warriors weren't always so weak and pathetic.

But god damn, is the first book good.

Awesome.  So then I could throw in 3 months for whatever slightly expenisve price.  But damn, thats one awesome gift if I do say so myself.  Thanx for the help guys.  I owe you one.
