I am really really really really scared of naval medicine when it comes to eye surgery, so I'm looking to get wavefront laser surgery on my right eye when I get home sometime this month.  It'll cost me around $3000+ grand, but worth it methinks.

D'oh! Does this mean your redeployment will be reconsidered, seeing that you'll need retraining and all?

+1.  Would they send you into battle not being able to shoot?

SRSLY?!

Do they teach to shoot off handed in training?  Even if they do if your vision is less then stellar how in the heck do they expect you to hit anything?

Off handed one eye not working.  Maybe they should pop your eardrums too so you can better be in tune with the force...

There is a rifle range (battle zero) in Iraq so I can practice there.  Since I'm not a jedi I'll just noob-tube it until I get better.  Or grab/steal a nice shotgun from the Army.

Quote from: PeteRock on August 29, 2008, 08:41:42 PM

One one hand, from a friend's perspective, I am not happy with Kato's redeployment.  But, Kato is a marine, and marines are trained and expected to be rather tough SOBs.  Plus, I assume he enlisted of his own free will, having at least some idea as to what he was signing up for to begin with.  Kato fights for our country.  That is his job.  With that job comes great risk, personal sacrifice, and expectations of a capability to face great adversity.  Based upon medical assessments and forum interactions, Kato seems perfectly capabable of "continuing the fight."  He's our very own Master Chief.

I am not intending to play devil's advocate.  On a personal level I believe that being wounded in combat should earn a soldier a return home.  But Kato knows his role as a marine and I have no doubt that he will attempt to fill that role to the absolute best of his ability.  Which is exactly why United States marines are some of the baddest motherfuckers on the planet.  Dude got blowed up by an RPG and after a few weeks of sponge baths and Xbox Live he's ready to get back into action.  There is something to be said for that.  And this is one of many reasons why marines are some of the military world's fighting elite.  While coming home is a preferable alternative for all involved (friends, family, etc), Kato's duty is not yet finished, at least in the eyes of his superiors.

As a friend I want him to come home.  As an American I cannot thank him enough for his great personal sacrifice and am so very proud to have the honor of calling him a friend.  And based upon the level of heroism he has already displayed in saving the lives of two of his squad mates, I know that family members with troops overseas will take comfort knowing that their loved ones will once again be under the watchful eye and protection of USMC Kato.  Our marines are only as good as the man next to them.  And with Kato by their side I know that they are much better off.

I am sorry to hear that you are being redeployed, Kato.  But I know that your squad mates need you on their six more than we need you on our six in COD4.  Personally I want you home.  But your squad and your country continue to need you.  We are all in your debt.  Godspeed.

Thanks Pete, you almost got me choked up....almost  icon_lol

I am no hero, just a lucky survivor.  Out of 14 years of service and after 5 combat tours this is the first time that I got wounded this badly.

Pete is right, I am a volunteer and I get to go back to finish what I started.  I may bitch, moan, and complain about my job, but I can't see myself doing anything else.

The good news is that my leave for 10 days will be approved sometime next month, unless WWIII breaks out.

P.S. Oh and I heard from my unit that DOGMEAT is getting fat.  When I get back there I'm gonna make him do some crunches.

Not to turn this political, but I wish this president would get cancer.  Incurable cancer.

Seriously man that's just misguided. This is how war works. You survive one scrape and move on to the next.  Just think about the boys in nam or WWII.  Major battles after major battles only to brush the dust off and keep going.  That's why, in my opinion, all military folks are heroes for even signing up for the hitch.

When I got wounded, shrapnel severed my radial artery which caused hypo volemic shock.  Also shrapnel in my right knee and right wrist contributed in my overall blood loss which slipped me into a temporary coma.  However, those kind of wounds I received did not cause permanent damage (arteries are supposedly the fastest healing part of the body).  So there it is, my wolverine healing factor works pretty well.

I'm not disappointed, my tour will be over by the end of the year.  But hopefully I can come stateside for 10 days before I ship out again to see my wife and some of you knuckleheads  icon_biggrin

Not knowing what the hell she was talking about I asked what her problem was and she pointed at the screen and yelled, "RPG!"

I hope it's not too soon to find something like that a little funny.   ninja

Never too soon for me, in fact during the firefight I was laughing at how ridiculous the situation was.

I did my best LT. Spears impression (Band of Brothers) and ran out there to pull two wounded to cover.  I got hit bad, but in hindsight all of us in my unit made it out and they laugh at me for being slow.

Too bad it wasn't the water bottle that got wounded.

I thought I could get away with carrying a fabulous looking water bottle (PeteRock approved color)

Recovering is going well.....have some new sexy scars but other than that I'll be 100%

Going to get evaluated tomorrow morning to see if I can be transported back to the states in September.  The chaplain came by to visit me to see if I was suffering PTSD.  I never had a problem with PTSD, I just have really crazy sleeping habits.

I finally have my own room with a computer and broadband internet (time to hook up my xbox and see how many friends I have left)

The medical staff took myself and 20 other wounded marines/soldiers out on a field trip to Luxembourg to see Gen. George Patton’s grave and to go inside a WWII German bunker.

I'm not too crazy about the local cuisine here, when I get back to the States I want a big fat steak.

Bah. The update should have been its own thread.  I'm just learning of this now.

My kids will be upset to hear that 'Antonio' was hurt...they didn't take to the name KATO.

My favorite was when my niece saw Kato on the Xbox live cam when I played Burnout.  She said ' Why's Kato look Asian?' O_o

Ha ha I remember that.  Even though that every picture you got from Burnout included me giving you the  finger

And people complain about asian drivers  ninja

I got a PM from a GT member (Suitably Ironic Moniker) that is actually stationed/lives right next to the hospital.  What a nice guy, I may shamelessly ask him for some good local food for take out  drool

I may in the states as early as next month.  Can't wait to play with you guys online again.  Hopefully even meet some of you in person.

Dogmeat continues to go on patrols with my Marine unit, and he has been officially adopted by my command which is good news.  The bad news is that he won't be coming back to the states with me  icon_cry

And yes Mytocles I am currently sporting a nice hospital gown that does not cover my backside.  I'd post a pic here but that kind of sexiness would get me banned.
