If you picked two weapons on spawn, and then could pick up weapons dropped by formerly alive people, I think I would enjoy Halo more.

I think that is kind of how Reach is going to work.  At least in one of the modes I saw in Kotaku's preview.  Each loadout will have a different primary weapon and talent assigned.  You can pick up other weapons after you spawn.

Yeah I'm in of course! Since Reach is seems to be class-based, I'm sure I'll enjoy Reach more than I did with Halo 3.

What a shame that this game will crash and burn like every other RPG released on the 360 that isn't Final Fantasy. It truly is a wonderful game, and I'm addicted to the combat. Tri-Ace really thought outside of the box for this one.

I'll go on record and say that Resonance of Fate will be looked upon as one of the great RPGs of this generation that nobody bothered to play. Damn Sega for throwing this one into the marketplace to die.

I totally agree.  The combat system is by far the best I've played in a JRPG in a long time, perhaps since Grandia.  And yes I actually like this game better than FFXIII.

I think I should've done the advanced tutorial.  I've only just discovered that the 'galaxy map' button at the bottom is different to the minimum zoom button by the minimap.  Now I can easily see where to find those precious luxury goods I've been after!  My economy has been absolutely tanking because my colonies won't grow without them.

I'll probably start a new game armed with this knowledge and build a decent fleet from the off.  I've been spreading my mining stations around quite thinly and they keep getting taken out by pirates.  This time I'll be sure to keep them defended.  I'm really enjoying this game.

I'm happy that this game is getting good word of mouth.  Bought the game, but I just haven't had time to start it up yet......

Played for a couple of hours. Not sue I'm really getting the battles so far. You've only got a graphical depiction for one weapon (or maybe it's for the ship) but that doesn't mean all are in range, nor can you see minimum distance. Using dodge can be catastrophically bad...and it really seems like a guessing game as to what you should do.

Usually, the enemy is color coded to represent what actual charge they are at during the battle.  When the enemy is at green or yellow, all he could do is fire a normal shot or dodge.  And when the enemy charges up all the way to red, most likely the enemy will do a barrage attack, and thats when you should dodge.  In the early part of the game, I can understand how battles are limited since we only have 3 options to choose from, but later we will get six battle commands and bigger fleets/crew

I'm way more interested in this game than in Final Fantasy XIII, so I'll be glad to read any impressions as you guys move forward in the game!

-Autistic Angel

I have FFXIII, just started chapter 11.  I started Resonance of Fate just this Tuesday and I have to say that its like the opposite of the latest Final Fantasy.  For example in FFXIII, the battle system is slowly unraveled to you.  But in Resonance the whole battle system is laid out to you in the beginning. Traveling the world map is somewhat limited in the beginning, but not linear.  And already there are optional hunter missions available at the guild.  The battles themselves are what impress me the most, gun-duels that remind me of Gun-kata  (from the movie Equilibrium).  So far they seem very well done with great animations. Like someone else in this thread noted, the battle system is like Eternal Sonata or Valkyrie Chronicles, but much more complex and strategic.   I'm only 4-5 hours in so I'll have more impressions later.

Thanks!  I'm especially curious about the difficulty curve and how challenging it is to get a handle on the different combat mechanics.  Due to how the whole system is unleashed on the player right from the start, the early reviews have talked about feeling overwhelmed.  I don't mind learning how to change up my tactics to beat a particular enemy type, but that's tough to do if you aren't given enough information on how all the different systems operate.

Still, I'd prefer a game that expects me to puzzle a few things out for myself over one that's so overprotective, it stops just short of taking the controller out of my hand and saying, "Here, just let me do it."  I'd rather try and fail on my own merits than "win" because I did such a super-keen job of pressing the Auto-Attack button.

As you play: do you feel like the game is set up to allow different strategies towards the same goal, or is it more of a puzzle to figure out the one right way to beat a specific challenge?

-Autistic Angel

To answer your question, so far the game (the battles) is set up to allow different strategies towards the same goal as you said.  The only puzzle aspect of it is using an item to get complete stats of an enemy type (Like Final Fantasy's Libra spell) and using that knowledge to plan your battle tactics accordingly.  I'm just at the point in the game right now that I can start upgrading and crafting different parts for my weapons (i.e. optics, larger magazines, specialized ammo, etc)
The battle system itself is deeper than I thought and will take practice, especially the "tri-attack".

Oh yeah, and if you die (and you will) you can either pay 100 credits for a retry, or pay nothing and load a saved game.
