8241  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Company of Heroes Beta Going Public ? on: August 18, 2006, 03:52:30 PM
Actually, I think resources were simply fixed for the allies as opposed to being sped up for everyone.  I'm convinced that there was some bug or other error that gave allies less resources in the mid to late game.  I think perhaps the supply depot didn't work as intended or something.  However, this change was very slight, or I'm just seeing things.  I haven't noticed games sped up all that much.

How are tank destroyers this time around?  I notice one of my teammates was using a lot of tank destroyers in one game to good use, but I've also seen them get slaughtered.  What do you think?

What was the officer bug anyway?

That quad 50 is just plain nasty, but still quite easy to kill for a vehicle.  If you're not prepared for vehicles when it comes out, say goodbye to a lot of infantry.  I actually like it more effective, even though it's been used against me a lot, makes it more worth the cost despite its vulnerability.

Now the sticky bomb damage change I really don't agree with.  They already did piss poor damage to heavy tanks and now they do less?  If they're going to make it less than they really should make it nearly guaranteed to destroy the engine instead of just damaging it.

I love the new grenade changes, a good way to make that grenade upgrade worth it and highlight the difference between the US and German grenades.

Early axis infantry upgrades are nasty.  I had one guy using what looked like the german assault rifle against me and man they would kill my basic infantry before I could retreat them.  I had to counter by using suppression fire a lot and chucking grenades.

All I know is that the game does play a bit better.  In one match is was dead even Victory point control until the last few minutes of the game.  It was on the 2v2 Mc-something's War map.  The enemy German player and I were going back and forth for those high value control points on the west side of the map.  It was so intense that I didn't realize my teammate had put those hard won resources to good use and had pushed right up into the enemy base.  He was using m10s.  I think I'll go watch that replay to see what he did.

There are several unlockable characters in game according to reviews.  Pretty much anyone interesting has to be unlocked.

You can even play a troll, albiet for only two missions.

And one good point:

Digital cleavage on Inphy.  Tongue

Otherwise, I'll just wait for this one to hit the bargain bin and pick it up as an example of how many models a 360 can render on screen at once.

Did they do anything to fix the friendly unit AI?  They seemed to just stand there and take hits.  I've been in situations where the last 5-6 goblins in an army wipes out half my guard unit because the friendly AI is so inept.
8247  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Company of Heroes Beta Going Public ? on: August 18, 2006, 08:08:29 AM
A new patch has been released for the beta, it's a massive 800mb, but so far it looks good.

Alternatively, you can download the entire beta client for 1.6mb.

Um, don't you mean Fire Prisms?

Either way, both the brightlances and fire prisms were toned down drastically, so now eldar are even more difficult to play.
8249  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: FEAR Combat available now..FREE on: August 18, 2006, 06:40:14 AM
I loved FEAR multiplayer.  The only reason I don't play it was that there's a lot of various mods and other games to play these days.

That said, FEAR multiplayer feels like Halo 2 without shields.  Play for a while and I think many here will agree with me.

The major problem I had with the multiplayer way back on release, was the medkits you could carry around.  A good player would develop a stockpile of medkits and you can carry up to 5-10 with you.  All you had to do was press the heal key to use a medkit and you instantly got 50 health back.

So what happened was even if you had every advantage on an enemy (surprise, attack from behind, height, better weapon, optimal range, etc...) all your opponent would do was keep popping those medkits, turn around and blast you.

Another thing was there were no interesting game modes.  Sure, there's the standard deathmatch, CTF, etc... but nothing that really fits with the theme.  Vivendi really should have invested in a good, unique multiplayer mode in order to give the game more legs.
8250  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Warhammer: Dawn of War - Get me started on: August 17, 2006, 12:34:15 PM
Whoah.

I no longer have my copy of the original DoW, but now this makes me want to rebuy everything and get the expansion.

The Tau or Necrons are both the kind of army I play.  The tau being slightly squishy but with tremendous ranged firepower.

The necrons being just plain hard to kill, but slow to move and build up.

Too bad there's no meta-game for the multiplayer too.

Anyone else interested in an online campaign for this game?  Or at least running through some premade modules in co-op?
8252  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Chromehounds: Worth the purchase? on: August 17, 2006, 07:35:53 AM
Despite how much I like the game.  I'm going to have to say no as well.

Wait for Chromehounds 2, or some other mech combat game that includes a better SP game and an online mode that's not so quirky.

Armored Core is coming to the 360, that might be something to try.
8253  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dead Rising impressions! on: August 17, 2006, 02:58:27 AM
On the other hand, you can do the same thing without making players replay over the same things over and over.

It's still very much a cop out to me, they couldn't put in enough gameplay for one long run through, so they string you along through the same sequences over and over for the chance on unlocking little side bits.

Instead of the idea of arbitrarily unlocking areas just because you play through it, you could simply have accumulated player choices grant access to different areas as part of a story.  They did this in Sword of the Samurai to good effect, despite the game's problems.
8254  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Speaking of Neverwinter Nights 2... on: August 17, 2006, 02:54:45 AM
All I know is that a friend of mine is a designer at Obsidian for the game, and knowing his stuff I'll buy this game sight unseen.

Yep, just another RTS.  I really can't go back to vanilla ho hum RTS games after playing company of heroes.
8256  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dead Rising impressions! on: August 16, 2006, 09:14:33 AM
What I want to see is a resident evil game like this.  Not campy humor, but with large locations filled with zombies (so it actually feels zombie infested instead of a few wandering around cramped hallways), dark setting, maybe some survival based gameplay that forces you to move from location to location.
8257  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dead Rising impressions! on: August 15, 2006, 11:47:59 PM
As much as I like the premise, I'm not a fan of the picture taking aspect of the game.

This aspect was also a bit disturbing in the intro helicopter ride too, as while I was watching people get killed through the viewfinder, I was thinking that I should have told the damn copter pilot to get in gloser and rescue these people instead of just watching them die, and taking pictures of their death.
8258  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Too Human on: August 15, 2006, 11:44:42 PM
It probably means that they gutted some aspects of the engine and rewrote them to better suit their game.  For example, they wanted hordes of enemies on screen for some segments, the UE3 engine might not support that too well, so they may have had to change the renderer and AI routines to allow it.

This isn't too different from any other game development, though.

It's probably just some news or fan site desperate to post something and they found this.

8261  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dead Rising impressions! on: August 15, 2006, 04:39:42 AM
This game is just an exercise in frustration to me.  They make boss encounters rely so heavily on firearms, yet they provide no way for the player to duck or take cover.

The follower AI is just braindead, they need to take a cue from Half-Life 2 Episode 1.  I had people stopping for no reason at all.  Leah, on the otherhand, was fine by me, she was hurt, I'd have to carry her to make this go quickly.  The two guys in the women's clothing store were idiots, one of them always found some reason to stand there and get mauled by zombies.  Then, when I go to help him the others get mauled by zombies.  Then, when looking for a save point I get killed because, that's right, the only save point happens to be back at the security room and I end up in the hallway full of zombies and a welded shut door.

I rented the game this morning, and I haven't gotten to Case 1-4 yet.  I stop for a survivor, they die, I die, nightfalls and everyone dies.  Then, if the survivors somehow live for a few minutes, all the time I took trying to keep them alive lets those stupid convicts spawn in the central park.  And somehow, with hundreds of zombies all over the park, they find me and gun me and my followers down.  But, the direct path through the mall is magically blocked by a gate for which there is no switch.  Meaning I either go the long way around the entire mall fighting with my stupid follower AI, or go through the park and die.

It's just a lose lose situation.

The sad thing is, the game and story was interesting, but I've lost all interest in the game.  If there were cheat codes for this game I'd probably just put all of them in and just burn through everything just to see the story, but since there's not I'll just wait for this one to hit the bargain bin.

This game is more frustrating than the original resident evil with all its weird interface quirks.
8262  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Too Human on: August 15, 2006, 12:51:34 AM
Well, Rare's problem was that it didn't know what to do with their next gen titles.  The platform shift certainly didn't help.

Take Kameo for instance.  What could have been a nice release day kids title turned into a strange glom of kiddy artwork and sentiments, combined with overly complex warrior changing system, and too much emphasis on the mediocre combat portion of the game.  They should have kept it as a kids game.
8263  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Company of Heroes Beta Going Public ? on: August 14, 2006, 09:57:06 PM
I'd have no problems with having a bigger howitzer.  Tongue

I actually think the allies should get a pershing as a standard unit, and the armor branch makes just makes the more plentiful or adds experience/upgrades to sherman crews.

Despite the problems, this is still a buy for me.  The WW2 setting doesn't put me off since it's done so well.

Admittedly, the 2 armies with 3 branches each isn't exactly the most varied of games.  The thing is, the gameplay itself is a lot more nuanced than dawn of war.  So, I still think CoH with 2 armies and branches is still more nuanced than the original Dawn of War with no expansions.

All they need right now is a big balance patch to fix some things, and try some new methods of differentiating the two armies and branches.

* The pathing in the game needs major work, I kept getting my APCs and Tanks stuck in the middle of an open road for some unknown reason.  retard retard

Agreed.  Not only that, but tanks for some strange reason like to go into melee with the enemy if you give them an attack order.

Quote
* My son without hardly any resource points, was able to CHURN out stuff by salvaging my exploded gear.  I couldn't believe the way he could throw shit at me without any real pause despite a clear lack of capture points.

Well, not sure if it was just salvage, but the blitzkrieg branch for the germans has an ability where you can turn 200 munitions into 1000 manpower.  Then another ability in the same branch allows them to call in more tanks for just manpower, no fuel required.

Also, did you upgrade your resource rate by buying the upgrades in the supply yard?  I'm not sure if those upgrades are at all that good since the germans always outproduce me.

Quote
* Americans are anemic in the game IMO.  Rifle squads are no match for Genadiers/KnightsCross or Upgraded Normal Germans.  Tanks, well, you know..  Artillery the germans have tremendous rockets as base units AND mortor teams, while the US has, uhh, mortors?

You're right, but also wrong.  The Americans are slightly more powerful early in the game, but quickly lose any advantage they had in the mid to late game.  Thus american players must win quickly or not at all.  Late in the game you face all those upgraded units, nasty german weaponry, and the inevitable swarms of german tanks that take forever to die.

This is balance based on pacing, and it's one of the things I hate when RTS designers use it.  Two forces should always be able to match up with each other, especially since it's very, very difficult to control the pace of a game as it unfolds.

Quote
* I had every ammo and fuel point, but I was capped at +58, while my son with only a couple, had +80, whats up with that? Either a bug or Germans have a resource advantage.

Also agreed, there is something seriously wrong with how much I can produce as allies compared to the Germans.  This is compounded by the fact that German stuff tends to survive a lot longer than allied units (at least the late game units do).  If I recall it was the Americans that were supposed to have the big production advantage.

Quote
* For the first time I realized US Anti-Tank guns can fire armor piercing, but you have to MICROMANAGE them to do it.  retard  Apparently the AI is too retarded to switch to AP when a Panther is breathing down their neck?  If you are a micro god, I guess this is ok, I am not, I suck at heavy micro.

This is one thing I really hate.  AT Guns are supposed to fire AT shells by default.  You have a gun designed to kill tanks, yet you load it with high explosive all the time?  Another reason I hate this is that eats up munitions like crazy just to deal with tanks.  They need to up the damage on the allied AT so that it stands a chance of fending off tank swarms.  Especially so since the firing angle on the gun is very narrow, way to narrow for how small the maps are and how fast the german tanks move.  Because of that it's likely you'll be firing straight into the front of the german tank.

On the whole, it requires too much use of microing and special abilities (and the munitions cost from those abilities) to deal with german tanks.  So when the tank swarms inevitably come out, it's simply too much to deal with.  Compared to US armor which is knocked out quite easily, and you simply can't produce the same amount of them as the germans, which is really odd since the allies were supposed to have at least 4 of them for every german tank.

Quote
* The german Ost flak tank thing is overpowered, and is a choice vehicle for early rushes into enemy bases, they chew up buildings and men BADLY, but do little to armor.  But if used properly, they are extremely overpowered considering they were less than stellar IRL.

Agreed, that flakpanzer is simply overpowered.  Sure, it's useless against tanks, but it obliterates anything else.

Quote
* German buildings and bunkers are *WAY* tougher.. While US stuff is sheet metal and sandbags, and is pretty easy for even a light tank to take down.  While it takes some muscle to drop the german buildings/bunkers.
* German bunkers can be garrisoned, US cannot.  This is a pretty big advantage because german ones can fire to all sides, whilst the US one is limited to line of sight only.

This isn't that bad, I kinda like the difference.  The main problem is that the US MG nest costs a lot more than a bunker equipped with the same.  I think it was 240 for a US MG nest while you can build a bunker for 150, the upgrade to an MG nest for 50 munition.  Then, as you mentioned, it takes a lot more to knock out that bunker than it does to kill the MG nest.

You're incorrect about garrisoning though.  You can put troops into US MG nests, and they will fire out the sides, try it, it works.  Unfortunately, it's also a big risk since that nest can be knocked out easily.

Quote
* German buildings are all manned with MG42 teams, US have nothing.

Incorrect, under the defensive branch of the German army there is an ability that mans all your base buildings with machineguns and allows you to reinforce near bunkers.  So this is fine by me since it's a strategic ability, and only an okay one at that.

Quote
* Mines are far too weak.  It takes 3-4 mine hits to take out a german light tank.

Yes, but mines knock out infantry easy.  Perhaps they should make two different kinds of mines.  Anti tank and anti infantry mines.

Quote
* For a special unit, paratroops seem pretty weak.  Upgraded basic german units wipe the floor with them, and it takes 5-6+ satchel charges to take out a basic concrete german reinforced bunker.  Junk.

Actually airborne are quite powerful if used correctly, the problem is as above, they're useless late in the game against a German player with the equivalent units.  Allied infantry just can't stay alive long enough in the late game.  Airborne can take upgrades like the recoilless rifle that allows them to kill hard targets like bunkers and tanks.  You can also drop in AT guns.

However, the germans get units that can knock airborne out of the sky, such as the flakpanzer and the 88.  In the case of the flakpanzer not only can it kill airborne before they're on the ground, but it'll kill them on the ground too.

Despite all this, the developers have been watching.  They've already said they've got a round of balance changes waiting to be patched in.  The problem is they're focusing on getting the Relic Online service working before they do anything else.  So, I think we'll see balance patches out in the near future now that RO is slowly getting more stable.
8265  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Company of Heroes Beta Going Public ? on: August 11, 2006, 11:47:48 PM
The stability goes in and out.  I've seen it stable with 1800 people on.  Then it was slightly shakey today with only 900.

And Raydude, man.  Fix your connection!  Tongue  He dropped on me in the middle of intense firefight with no warning.  I still won against two players though.  Kept them off balace by constantly pushing two fronts and getting out tanks before they could.

I've found out that the suppression fire ability that the US basic infantry get is extremely powerful  It can pin three enemy squads all by itself while it lasts.  This allows you to repel attacks with just a handful of troops.  It's costly to buy and use, but it's powerful.  So if you're playing germans and see at BAR on the ground, grab it.

One of the best ways to keep putting pressure on the enemy is to use bounding machineguns.  One machinegun covers the other while it's moving up, even better if you're moving from building to building.

Try to avoid small buildings when garrisoning, because I've found that one grenade or panzerfaust strike will kill everyone in those buildings.

The fee isn't as bad if you buy a full year.  In fact, more stores carry a live sub card for 13 months for the same price as a 12 month sub.  It equals slightly less than $4 a month.

I tried the demo.  It was bad.  The bots can aim well depending on the setting, but their navigation puts them on the same routes over and over and over.

Plus, it's such a simple game, it's really not worth it.  The Unreal Tournament games have more depth, better pacing, and are just as cheap as this game.

It's only redeeming factor looks to be the conquest mode, but from the reviews it looks like that's simplified too.

All in all, it's a quick money grab using a lot of leftover art from Pariah.

Anyway, I doubt we'll ever see a true sequel to System Shock 3, it's just not EA's kind of game anymore, and EA doesn't give up it's IP lightly.

However, with the success of Oblivion, and the probably success of Bioshock, EA might reconsider.

I know that System Shock 3 was in development in some form, and at some time, at EA, but I'm not sure what's become of it.

The strange thing is, I can't think of too much a reason why these features are missing.  Think about it, they're not actually changing the gameplay all that much, and some of these missing features are solely outside the game based on simple numerical stats.  All you need is a new interface and they can plug in an older system.

Um, you guys are forgetting that EA could have simply let MS run the normal matchmaking for their games and all the costs could have been handled by MS.

Besides, a matchmaking server isn't all that expensive, especially so if not so many people are playing it.  You can simply fold it into a larger server farm.

The weird thing is, for the Xbox since MS handles matchmaking EA shouldn't be able to shut down the game.
