I'm something of a similar mind, but I very much care for all of humanity, not just fellow Americans.  But as above, this nation has serious problems that we'll need to sort out before we can go around talking about fixing the problems of others.  However, if we ever do fix things.

And by the same note, if all those people that are leaving mexico for the states, what if instead of fleeing their country they all banded together, formed a new political party, even took up arms to defend themselves from the political, military, and crime backlash.  They could change their own country for the better.

One thing that the immigrant situation is good thing though, is that it brings a sense of perspective.  Get too isolated from the world, or strive too hard to keep things "the same" and everything stagnates.

The early missions tend to be interesting, but the later missions just run out of steam, resorting to standard build base assault enemy base objectives for the last half of both GDI and Nod campaigns.  They even use multiplayer maps as SP mission maps.  That leaves the cutscenes to hold your interest, but unfortunately, while they've got a lot of good actors there isn't much of a real story to the game, or at least nothing in the way of new revelations besides aliens.

Main mods I'm using are:
Armor repair - It's costly to do, but it's nice to have that option.
Fixed dialogue - not too sure I like this one, the sometimes odd Russian translations actually added to the game for me.
Longer flashlight range - more useful for those using only static lighting as the default flashlight distance is way too small.  I can barely see across rooms in underground areas.  With dynamic lighting the flashlight is a dynamic light with a lot longer range so it's not an issue.

Ones I'm looking at is a mod that'll add some previously inaccessible suits to the game such as the high end power armor (the yellow one).

I'll be fine with halo wars so long as they don't use some sort of "Ages" mechanic, nor do I want to see a lot of resource types, if any.

Unfortunately with them they're heavy into the whole arbitrary rock, paper, scissors balance instead factoring many more things than unit make-up like terrain, attack direction, morale, etc...

That's pretty stupid considering you can buy the 24 sound track, rip the song and upload it to the phone to use.  Not to mention you can play it all you want.  Heck, iTunes songs come for cheaper than that and those are unlimited play as well.

It would have been a really stupid business move to rent ring tones, unfortunately this is for younger kids who don't know the deal.

It has a lot to do with the pacing of the RTS games that do this.  For example, a game similar to Kohan would play well on a console because it's pace allows for the time it takes a controller to handle such things, nor are you all that penalized for not reacting quickly.  Then adding on the gameplay aids for the controller just helps more.

The same goes for FPS games.  For all that say FPS games are fast, some of them are actually very well paced.  What helps with pacing is the aiming aids.  The halo games have 6 different aim assistance systems in game that helps give the impression that a gamer is more accurate that he really is.

Honestly I think they could do a decent job of showhorning C&C3 onto the 360, but I don't think it'll work.  The game was designed as a twitch action game of the RTS genre.  I bet you they've slowed down the game in many subtle ways to get it on the console, not to mention simplified the game quite a bit.

Unlike some, I do think a good RTS game can be made for consoles, but it'll have to be made for consoles first, and might actually not look like any PC game currently.

Very cool.  I like the story, it's a pretty nice twist to the standard specops team and supernatural horror thing.  Reminds me a bit of X-Com Alliance, but replacing sectoids with supernatural baddies.

Just wanted to resurrect this thread to state how good this game is.

It's also a simpler game than Zelda for those who compare.  You don't have all these inventory items that you have to switch out and use.  That cuts down on some of the tedium of the Zelda style game, making the dungeons a often more linear and straight forward.  That's a good thing for a handheld game to me.

And yeah, we know next to nothing about FO3.  All rumors.

Fallout could still be a third person isometric game with turn based combat.

Either way, one thing I hope FO3 will do for the series is actually give it more attention.  FO1&2 were both pretty obscure games on the whole, okay sellers, and good word of mouth between RPG gamers, but nothing that would get gamers who don't normally play RPGs to try it.

Actually, I think that games like WoW and the Wii console don't so much shake off all the B.S. conventions of the genre/systems.  They just hide them better than most.

For example, with WoW, it's still an MMO with an MMO with a grind.  It's just hidden well by the world, quests, and wide user base.

The Wii is still a game console, it's not magically more appealing to casual gamers.  So far, consindering the games that are out for it and the control schemes they use, all the system does is takes what were once button presses, and sometimes complex control schemes using those buttons, and turns them into simpler gestures.  But the core of the game is still there, you're still essentially making a motion to get a desired gameplay event to occur.

The problem with the Wii, and it quite valid, is what happens when the novelty of the controller wears off and people see this?  Nintendo will really have to innovate with its controller useage well beyond simply replacing controller button layouts with gestures and find a way to really use motion as a control.  The early golf games where your entire swing is controlled by the Wiimote is a good start, but it'll have to go farther.

I recently acquired a PSP and then stumbled upon podcasts and RSS feeds that include podcasts and various other news and media.  Media on the go is pretty cool, despite me thinking little of the idea before.

So I'm wondering, what are your favorite podcasts and RSS feeds?

Right now, I've just got a few G4TV RSS feeds subscribed on my PSP, they primarily have videos, but I'd be interested in anything else, gaming related or not.

(By the way, what exactly is an RSS feed?)

Sony is still making money, despite posting losses for the PS3, the PSP is now stronger than ever now that it has a good game library that's growing monthly.

However, just like the PS3, it's had to deal with a lot of negative pressure, everyone assumes it's a poor system for more cost, but in reality it's just a different market compared to the DS.

Their other departments are doing really well, as Sony just posted profits on hardware sales of HDTVs and the like.  Hopefully this'll allow them to really push the PS3 to be an actual competitor to the 360.

Yeah, this isn't the kind of game I want to play on the PSP, I wanted more involved games than the DS, yes, but the grind reviews are talking about is like old-old school RPGs, or even MMOs.  It's sad though since they still had an interesting description of the systems on paper, along with co-op, a big plus.  It's just too bad the actual balance of the game was off.

Yeah, they really should have made the characters you get by codes or saves other than your own from being used in MP.

Makes the game a bit pointless if you don't work to get your soldiers.

It's like making a pokemon game where you can instantly collect all pokemon.

Really freaking amazing how well they adapted the MGS2/3 play style to the PSP.  Each mission is actually an area that you can revisit.  This time the schtick is being able to capture enemy soldiers to put into your own roster.  You can send in four of these soldiers, Snake included, into a mission and switch to different members at various points.  Each member has various skills that help out in and outside the missions.

The main difference between the PSP game is that each character is now very limited in what he can carry.  Only 4 slots are available, making you rely on more than one soldier.

You can assign enemy soldiers to tech, medical, and spying after recruiting them, putting soldiers in the tech area makes them create items and weapons for use.

Medical creates medical items, but also heals soldiers between missions.

Spying allows you to assign soldiers to areas, and depending on the area different things come up like new missions, NPC and item placement, more detailed map, even the stats of soldiers on the map to aid in recruiting.  Different agents can also affect the mission by lowering enemy health, condition, etc...

Basically it turns the game into smaller more manageable chunks.  If you don't have time to go on a longer story mission or boss battle, you can still go

Then there's the online play, which is great and has many options.  First is to jump into online games of standard varieties.  Deathmatch, team deathmatch, and capture the frog are represented, and you use soldiers and items that you've acquired.  It takes time to build up characters capable of holding up, but there's codes to get some good characters quickly, you'll just need to arm them.  And all the different aspects will take some getting used to (for example male characters can be affected by dirty magazines, basically stunning them if you run over them.

One really interesting online mode has you not playing at all.  Instead you simply assemble a team including equipment.  Then you can send that team into online computer generated battles that are determined by your team makeup and other factors.  It'll pit your team against other player created teams online, and as your team wins or loses battles you gain things like new soldiers.  There's a whole system of rules for this mode making it like a CCG as much as a game, and you actually get battle reports back to see how and why your team won or lost.

Anyone else have this game?

A friend and I recently got this game on the PSP.  I purchased a copy, then after I used the Game Share feature to upload one of the demo mission to him he wanted to try the campaign co-op.  So out he went to get a copy.  We played through 5 or so missions co-op and it was a blast.  Afterwards we jumped into some quick 1v1 multiplayer and had a lot of fun hunting each other down.

The game is great fun.  It's mainly action with a good pace.  It's a 3rd person 3/4ths view game, not an FPS.  The controls seem complicated on paper, but they're really easy to get used to.

There's a lot of talk about a patch that'll add online (infrastructure) play and 4 more missions to the game. but it's seeing a lot of delays.  Hopefully it comes out soon as I see myself playing its online mode quite a bit with how fun just 2v2 was.

Seeing this game makes me think that Killzone would make a great turn based strategy game.  Not the Japanese SRPG style of TBS, but something more like X-Com.  Heck, all they'd have to do is drop the art assets into a TBS engine.

I have a suspicion that Square Enix released that statement as a bargaining chip to get Sony to pony up more money to retain FF13's exclusivity.  It's likely Sony has already made the deal since they know how valuable having the first and perhaps second next gen Final Fantasy games would be to their console.  If they nab both FF13 and FF13 Versus, then they've got a huge exclusive there that'll help sell systems, perhaps as much a draw as FF7 sold PS1s.

Nintendo will be getting more square games, Square has definitely seen the benefit to multiplatform as they've been releasing a lot of different games for different systems.

I'll probably pick this up.  Who knows, they might add infrastructure mode later in a patch like Killzone is doing.  Either way, this genre is pretty interesting on the PSP, especially when represented with such good graphics.

I hear the control scheme really needs work, especially since there's no targetting/lock on feature.  The friendly fire always on thing doesn't bother me though, in the right circumstances, the friendly fire thing can make for a much more interesting game.

I'd vote for it as best character animation in a video game so far.  Seriously, in other games I'd have no trouble offing NPCs for loot and resources, but those little sisters, man I really don't think I could do it, even if it meant many hours of extra work in game, I don't think I could.

One thing I loved about guild wars (besides the pricing) was the artwork.  The company really, I mean really, takes the time and money to hire some of the best concept artists for their game and it really shows.  I hope one day they release an artbook because from the tiny bit of stuff contracted artists have been showing, I's buy that book in a second, even if it was the cost of the game itself.

I mean, who know who he is, he's easy enough to track through IP logs and ISP use.  I'm perfectly fine with giving him a permanent record.

Yep, neither was 4 player co-op in, just two player when it was first announced.  Although I wonder if that's going to be same screen, split screen, or online only co-op.

I think they're trying to distance themselves from DMC and the like, while at the same time appeal to the Halo crowd.

I've been playing Metal Gear Acid 2 and boy do I like that game.  It's weird that it's a metal gear game instead of just a standalone game, but somehow it just works.  I was fortunate to have a friend who pretty much has everything in that game, yeah he's that kind of player.  The way he figures it is that it curbs his collecting tendancies without making him pay real money for booster packs in stores.  Anyway, he was going to hook me up with cards in game since I really don't like collecting, but I still love the gameplay.

One thing that's sorely missing is a good and simple multiplayer mode.  That's one area where Kojima screwed players over by tying the multiplayer a little too much to the single player game with his quirky fourth wall breaking connections.  Hopefully in ACID 3 they'll put in a full MP mode where you can choose characters and have straight card battles.

I'm really interested in Killzone Liberation now, especially since there's word that the online infrastructure mode is being patched in soon, along with a new chapter with 4 new missions.  I saw a video review of the game and not only do the graphics look amazing, it seems they really nailed the fps style combat, but from an overhead isometric action perspective.  I guess not too dissimilar from the old Crusader games.

Heh, I still find it funny how people complained and complained about the boomerang controller when they never had it in their hands, then now they complain about the sixaxis when it uses the same design as the original.  And now people want the 360 controller design, even though they were complaining about the Xbox design way back when it was announced too.

If they can fix the bugs in the game, then delays are fine by me.

With a game of this scope, there's a lot of work to be done.

Of course, it could always turn out bad, but so far the devs sound like they've been on the ball about fixing bugs.  Also seems like the publisher is receptive to delays.
