Not sure what you were looking for in the game, but SC was supposed to be the ultimate "build giant blobs of units and send them accross the map" kind of game.


From the demo, I agree unit selection is problematic.  They should really have gone with some sort of platoon/company control scheme.  Something like, wherever you have a group of similar units together, they have a control icon placed over them with details like strength and number of units.  You can then just use this icon to order the cluster around.

Where you have multiple unit types mixed together, the icons are bunched together, but you can still select them individually so you have more control over different unit types without resorting to the clunky "drag select mob, search through unit list for the one you want, double/shift/alt/whatever click to select all units of that type, issue specific order, repeat for next unit type".

Um, wow, what a completely pointless patch notes.  Might as well not have released the notes.

I wonder if they balanced out the heavy guns, they were too easily abused by players with the way they made it impossible for you to shoot back, and how players could load two dual heavy cannons on a biped and use them as close range weapons.

By the time you reoriented your view to shoot back at the enemy, he'd fire a second volley.  And with that huge blast radius, he never really had to reload.

Then there's that stupid 20 man squad limit.  They should have at least let squads band together into platoons or companies.

The list goes on.

I'll definitely be interested in Chromehounds 2, but for now I'll skip 1.

Can anyone confirm a speed slider in the game?  Having one is really important as to whether I'd buy the game.  But also as important, is if the speed slider just makes everything move really slowly, or changes the whole pacing of the game.

Well, it certainly looks like despite the execs that talk too much, there are people behind Sony that really do listen.

I think achievements are pointless, the whole gamerscore never appealed to me.  But, this is slightly more physical.  It'd be interesting if you could load this as the default interface, where you move the character around, and to play the game in the drive, you use a playstation 3 in your home.  Tongue  Still, like achievements, nothing too special to me, but very cool nonetheless.

If they're willing to do this, I wonder if in the future, once they settle the lawsuit with the rumble feature company, they can add back rumble into their games.  Heck, they added the dual shock controller to the PS1.

I dread to think of what DOA extreme volleyball would have as trophies, or some of those weird Japanese sim games.  Tongue

Honestly, the sales will come from those first big "WOW!" impressions, which is important to get good reviews from reviewers.  But in the long run, only teenagers who quaf energy drinks more than diablo 2 health potions will play this in the long term.  I'm actually somewhat serious about that statement.  Unfortunately, most reviewers won't play this long enough to realize that, or will gloss over the pacing aspect.

By the way, the superweapons are "I win" buttons in this game.  Yet again, with the whole overly fast pace of this game, the idea is that once you build a superweapon and it counts down to active and actually shoot it before the enemy blows it up (Which is easy considering how everything tends to blow up quickly), you win.

In the other C&C games, superweapons gave you a huge advantage when fired, but it really either helped you get back in the game, or helped win it if you're bogged down on that final advance.  In this game, unless the enemy has built backup bases, one superweapon strike will give you the game.

You can play the demo with the aliens.

Just go the the skirmish area.  Click on the drop down box for army/faction, click once on the army you want to use, even if it's greyed out.  Then press its' corresponding key on the keyboard (G for GDI, N for Nod, S for Scrin).  It'll change to that faction.  I played as Nod and Scrin, very interesting.  Albiet both are still way too fast.  It really is for kids on speed.

I'm pretty sure that I will not be buying this game.  It's not even fun for me in single player because of the pacing.  Which is sad since I see a lot of potention in there.  It's really too bad they took C&C in such a direction, going from way too slow (Tiberian Sun) to way too fast.  I would have also liked to see the story.  But then again, I didn't bother with Tiberian Sun, so I won't with 3.

In all honesty, if people on PCs find this too fast, there's no way they could get the game working on the 360 without significantly slowing the pace down.

Overall, this RTS has reached a point where it's simply not fun to play.  Sure, some will get a rush from it if they can keep up, but it seems more like work, stress, and anxiety along with a big dose of adrenaline rather than simple fun.  I see visions of people surrounded by cans of energy drinks as they try to get one more rank up on the ladder.  It's actually tiring to play.

I just don't have time for games I don't have fun in, or make me more tired then when I began.

In my eyes, it's too fast.  I think they went overboard with the pace, even generals wasn't this bad.

There's opportunity for some strategy, but unless you're willing to invest a lot of mental power and blood pressure into this game, it'll be difficult to assume a strategy besides build X number of units, usually with a good mix of anti vehicle/air, send at enemy to die.

One thing I do like is that infantry are once again useful in game, whereas in generals they were just money sinks.

Unfortunately, I do have to say that, if you like frantic games like this, C&C3 is it.  It's really well put together and if you're fast enough to use the tactics that are there the game is good for you.  But to me, this is just too much.

Downloaded it at 2mbps from my campus network.

Played it a bit and it feels like C&C, albiet at the pace of Generals.  It's probably closer to red alert than the original C&C, which isn't a bad thing.

Combats happen fast, the pace is frantic.  It's fun, but I don't think I'll be playing this on online against random people.  CoH was bad enough, but this is a build fest where you throw units at the enemy along the lines of Supreme Commander, albiet, with limited resources.

One thing I don't like is the way the queus are handled, instead of two buildings making the units queued up build faster or so, now multiple buildings means multiple build queus that you have to click back and forth from.  This can be confusing if you're in the middle of battle with so much happening.  And especially so since batles happen so damn fast that it's over in the time you switch between a queu, place the building, and switch back.

So, as much as this is C&C, it's also paced worse than Generals, which is a bad thing in my eyes.  Sure, red alert and the original C&C had pretty fast pacing, but this game is like it's meant for kids on speed.  They weren't kidding when they said it was fast paced, but this is too frantic for there to be any more strategy than build unit, send them to die.

Sounds like Bill Gates' brash statements back in the 640k days.  He's learned to mostly shut up since then.

Frankly, I get the feeling that this guy got into his position when the PS2 was at the top of its game and all the success they had, so he got to keep his job and not do all that much to maintain it.  Now, he's fighting against two successful competitors with a system that has had many bad decisions made about it and he's just blundering after having not been in practice.

I actually get that feeling about a lot of Sony hardware execs.

They really need to either shut these guys up or fire them.  In fact, I think one of the main reasons why they haven't been fired already is the clout he gained from being around while the PS2 was popular.

Depends on how it's written.  I got burned on the Splinter Cell novel after a few recommendations.  That was a horrifically written novel.  I literally could have written it better.  Every damn sentence started with the world "I".

Meanwhile, the latest Halo novel was good, Ghosts of Onyx, and I recall the Dig book was pretty good too.

So assuming the Mass Effect book isn't bad, I'll probably pick it up to get me all set for the game's release.

They have nothing to do with X-Com.  I guess neither company bothered to trademark that name, or are even willing to fight for the name.  I think that's because they're both just pretenders to the throne of X-Com, aka UFO: Enemy Unknown.

All they need now is a name change.

Basically, it sounds like everything I want in an MMO.  It's still stat driven, but action based where you aim at a target to lock on to it and every click shoots.  However, many factors determine if you hit and how bad the damage is, with things like stance, target's cover usage, weapons, range, armor, stats, etc.  It's up to you to position yourself and choose the right targets.

Since the game is based on ranged combat, the AI is more geared towards ranged, they'll take cover and try to flank you.  Not sure if there's suppression modeled in.

They've now dropped all the space hippy stuff too, except for things like the power of Pi. (Mmm... Pi).

Might not be TAGES, but Starforce went through a huge rebrand where nearly nothing is the same about the name.  But the software is basically the same except it was stripped of some, but perhaps not all, of its harsher protection methods.  Unfortunately, there's no real way to be sure since if it is starforce in disguise, there isn't much accountability for the developers.

Still, I loves me some controversy.

The Chief, he was the original X-Box exclusive, and despite him not saying much in general, he's had more charactarization than Fenix, even though Fenix had so much more opportunity for characterization.

I really didin't like the last episode of Dresden Files, it was horribly contrived, messed up the characters, and overall just poorly written.

So I wasn't hoping for much when I watched tonight's episode.

When the pretty woman came on screen at the beginning I thought all hope was lost, until she walked into Dresden's office and things suddenly became a great deal like the books.  Dresden, looking disheveled and ratty?  Check!  Classic detective plot that goes wrong?  Check.  Funny dialogue, check!  Bob the horny spirit?  Check!

It was like they fired whatever crappy writer wrote that last episode and started over.

Then, brimstone.  More book references.  Morgan the High Council enforcer.  Dresden and Murphy once again meeting under a bad situation.  Check!

So it sounds like not only did they fire that bad writer, but the writers go back and actually start reading the books.

I noticed the inclusion of Dresden's staff, and the explanation that the drumstick was his wand.  Also there's more of the setting "rules" from the book.

Overall, the whole episode seems like it could come out of a book.  There's still some issues with timing and character saying a little too much out in the open, and the plot was still a bit predictable.  But otherwise it's a good watch.

They haven't quite redeemed themselves from the last episode, and the fact that they didn't show the pilot first, but if later episodes are like this or better the show could slowly gain an audience.

I think it had great potential and fell short on a lot of aspects.  However, the firefights were great and doing things like raking the room with automatic fire hasn't felt more fun than on the Wii, there's just something about moving the controller to shoot that works great, but that damn turning thing that can't be changed is a problem.  Too bad they can't really patch it in.

Those people having trouble with the crosshairs going wonky... make sure your cell phones and other broadcasting electronics are away from your Wiimote.  They interfere with the signal.

I think the thing people were trying to point out was all that commotion over the PS3, it's price, and the cost of those extra features it really wasn't that big a deal when you look at how this new Xbox version costs almost as much as the lower end PS3.

I also wonder if people will make as big a stink if they don't include an HDMI cable.

Overall though, it's just been said.  So this new 360 version is kind of an FU to early adopters, and their whole policy on not having a HD standard is kind of biting them in the arse.

Not to be redundant, but have you tried turning all the details to low, the restarting the game?

This game is pretty CPU dependant, then that video card starts getting hurt when you do all those shadows and per pixel effects on all those units.

I suspect this game also uses vertex shaders to put all those units on the map at once, so the latest video card drivers can help.

I want to get a small form factor PC as my next PC.  I plan to use it for both gaming, and doing 3D animation work.

The way I figured this is that getting a laptop would be wasteful since if I got a gaming laptop, I'd have to plug it in wherever I play, and the laptop would be big and heavy anyway.  Gaming computer tend to get replaced quickly, and since I don't have the money for anywhere near top of the line, I'll need to replace it pretty soon.  Then I'd basically be paying for a lot of extra hardware that I couldn't reuse in a new PC, especially the display.  So if I was to get a laptop, it'd be small and very portable.

The computer labs at college have very high end 3D workstations so if I need to do advanced 3D work I'll use those.  Unfortunately, they're G5 Macs, so doing modding work for PC games is out of the question.

That leaves a SFF PC that I can easily being with me to campus and back.

So far I've only looked at Shuttle PC, and the prices are reasonable.  I saw that they have barebones PCs, so I wouldn't mind building it myself either.

Any thoughts?

Well another thing is that the Wii has big word of mouth in the casual gaming department, which means a lot more people playing in general.

Yeah, the game popped up on the forums a while back.  The announced release date is Feb. 28, I'm excited.

Unfortunately, they dropped a lot of features from the game from when they initially announced it.  They actually planned to have multiplayer in the form of tactical battles.

Jim Butcher, the author of the books, could weave these stories along a very investigative path, there's always be a nice twist regarding each supernatural thing.  However, it usually wasn't so much some weird and mind bending twist, just a different take on it what would fit in very well with with the setting.

I don't know how best to describe it, but the books kept the soap opera out of the story, but still involved some interesting characters and plots that keep driving towards a final end.  In fact one great thing about Butcher's reads were that you could always be satisfied with the end, usually some showdown like in classic detective movies where the detective figures things out, busts in to save the day, etc... but with sorcery involved and some witty banter.  The books were very easy reads, closer to classic simple storytelling than "Lost" style meandering plotlines.

Any hope I had for this series is dwindling away.  This episodes really shows how bad the writers are screwing up a good premise and good characters.

Murphy got no representation in this episode, even after showing a tiny bit more character last episode.

They go all cliched werewolf story, where the werewolves seem too much like vampires.  Then they base it on some arbitrary ritual.

The characters get into long dialogue where all that happens is question answer.

Towards the end there's a lot of stupidity regarding the Heather.  I mean, if the FBI guy killed 8 other werewolves with super strength and he only secures her with handcuffs?  What's with Dresden becoming so attached so quickly?  Dresden's a good guy, but even in the previous episodes and in the book he was very cautious to get attached.

They really should have waited on this whole lycanthrope thing until they could give it the proper treatment by basing a whole 3 episode arc on the book involving werewolves.  They could have then used the Dresden mythos surrounding werewolves and such to make the setting feel more alive.

Then there's the stupidity with the ending fight, as to why Dresden knew the lycanthrope could only be killed by silver, and still chose to shoot the thing with a gun.

They need to just buck up and go hire the writers for Buffy or Angel in order to save the show, because this one was a turn for the worse.  Fire whoever wrote this episode, hire the Buffy and Angel writers who knew how to setup a world with interesting rules and interactions and still make it character drive, without resorting to overly cliche plots.

Hell, I really don't like the show Supernatural and even they had better writing than this.  What sucks is that there's a lot of good actors here.  Dresden in particular really fits the role, Murphy is a great actress when they're not giving her deadpan lines from her detective side.  Bob is great, I really like the take on him, it differs a lot from the book but I kind of like him better this way.

I'm actually hoping they introduce some more in depth game types for Halo.  Something involving classes and two different sides and such where you can have Covenant Vs. Humans, Brute Alliance vs. Elite Alliance.  Even some interesting other modes like Survive the Flood, where one person starts off as a flood member, and anyone a flood member kills becomes another flood.

The Halo setting is ripe for such game modes with its excellent setting.  Yet it doesn't look like they plan for this, instead going with yet even more deathmatch variants.  For all the little additions, options, and mutators you can set for Halo MP, it's still basically deathmatch with extra rules to me.

Imagine a game where you have various classes like Grunt, Jackal, Brute, Elite, each with differing abilities and weapons.  Grunts would be the cheapest to spawn as and can respawn the fastest, maybe even getting their own little squad of grunts that they control, but they'd be less accurate and slow.  Elites are faster, have shields, more accurate, better weapons, but they're somewhat weak without their shields.  Juggernauts, Brutes, etc... all would have their own abilties.

On the human side you have different soldier classes, along with Helljumpers, Spartan 2's and 3's.  More teamwork related abilities.

Too bad there are no Halo mod tools because modders would just line up to make such a mod.

One of the reasons it's going for less at retail is the retails are slashing the prices on the game right at the beginning a bit as a way to undercut the idea of online distribution.
