7801  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS3] 20GB model truly 'discontinued'? on: April 08, 2007, 01:15:40 AM
Well don't be too hard on Sony, MS recently announced they were discontinuing the basic version of their 360 too.

Of course, this thread will now devolve, yet again, into a big argument over the comparative "value" of the 360's features to PS3's features.
7802  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: OO/GT CC3 Clan? on: April 07, 2007, 04:28:37 AM
I just activated my website account, looks like all clan related stuff is handled through the website, not in game.  So resend and invite to Vertrucio if you would.
7803  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: STALKER GOLD! on: April 07, 2007, 02:49:54 AM
What's even worse was that they opened the game up for modding.  If anyone with a brain knew that there were stolen art assets in game, they should have realized that the same modders who work on HL2 and Doom 3 will be trying out Stalker modding.

However, it may not be something systemic to the company.  Right now all that's been copied are textures used in other games, and specifically, these textures are for lighting and effects.  This may point to one of their texture/lighting artists stealing from other games rather than doing his job.
7804  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: New Tom Clancy Teaser Site on: April 07, 2007, 02:46:33 AM
I don't see anything about a "firehawk" or even aircraft for that matter.  Plus the Clancy name hasn't lended itself to air sims or action air games for some time.  I think whoever posted that is just wishful thinking.

If you listen, or read the transcripts to the stuff on the teaser sites, you hear mention of almost every clancy game save for Rainbow 6.

Also, they've said in other statements online that this will be a completely new clancy game.

My thought?  From the way it sounds like a big battle is being commanded, and that there's a lot of, this may be some weird real time strategy game that includes elements of almost all military clancy games.  There you'll send in normal grunts, but also have access to ghosts, splinter cell intelligence operatives, etc...  And since there is mention of spider drones, it'll likely be in the future somewhat.
7805  Non-Gaming / Steals and Deals / Re: Best Deal on a DS Lite? on: April 07, 2007, 12:22:12 AM
My local Fry's Electronics had about 7 of various colors behind the counter.  Not to much use to people unless they're in the socal area.  But otherwise, DSs are out there.
7806  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts expansion on: April 07, 2007, 12:20:18 AM
Did they describe what this new multiplayer mode is?
7807  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: New Tom Clancy Teaser Site on: April 06, 2007, 11:37:39 PM
Why are you thinking it's Firehawk?

One thing is for certain, the game does link Splinter Cell and Ghost Recon together at least in some way.
7808  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Mass Effect inches closer to launch on: April 06, 2007, 07:50:45 AM
Yeah, seriously, this may overtake Half-Life 2 for most lifelike characters in a video game.  Especially so since they have a lot more screen time, dialogue, and character interaction than in HL2.

I love the Twilek-like characters in this game, and all the aliens so far, some will complain about having all humanoid aliens, but it helps with empathizing with them.  It looks like they've taken all the good stuff about Star Wars, but ditched the baggage that is the license along with the D20 rules and have really turned out an amazing rpg.

7810  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: A pretty face in the crowd. NSFW on: April 06, 2007, 05:53:40 AM
Man, that girl in the first pix reminds me of this one waitress from Denny's I met way back when I had to eat there for a week straight (family and personal issues).

She looked similar to her, but with red hair and a pinball smile that made her face just light up.

This was back in my dark age of shy and introvertedness, so despite her making conversation with me, I never realized or tried to converse back, and this was after she was constantly getting chatted up by other guys and groups.  Still she was so striking to me that I still remember her and that pic just brought back memories.
7811  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: STALKER GOLD! on: April 06, 2007, 05:41:57 AM
What a massacre.  Of course if the developers actually implemented AI room entry routines and grenade usage, you'd be dead.  slywink  Actually, I wonder they'll use grenades on the highest difficulty.

I remember a similar scene when I went to rescue Mole, I saw a whole group of 10 or so military standing in front of Mole's door, one grenade took out all but one.
7812  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts expansion on: April 06, 2007, 02:00:26 AM
Yeah, Russian conscripts were pretty well known by know.

I forsee the Russian army being based on 3 branches like the first game.  One of the branches would basically the conscript branch, providing a lot of cheap, but poorly armed and trained conscripts and various conscript/infantry boosting abilities (such as comissars that executed those retreating for further morale bonus).
7813  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: STALKER GOLD! on: April 05, 2007, 11:07:48 PM
Actually, the game looks great with all the details on, the problem is it takes a really beefy system to run it with everything on, which is okay considering the scope of the game.

They probably should have allowed for two different renderer configurations depending on whether you're indoors or outdoors, this way they can bump up the graphics indoors and tone it down for outdoors.
7814  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: New Gears gametype for ATB's Friday nights... on: April 05, 2007, 12:08:58 PM
Except when you had a target dead to rights and his warping between cover elements like a ping pong ball (while still in plain sight) prevented you from hitting him enough damage to down him.  Especially so with the rifle.  It's using the snap to cover system in a very gamey non intuitive way, rather than actually taking cover behind it.

Add that to all my other issues with the game, the foremost being the uselessness of the basic rifles.
7815  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Carnage Hearts: Portable on: April 05, 2007, 10:32:38 AM
More importantly, what is it?

And what is the Carnage Heart's series?

How does it compare to Armored Core Formula Front? (which seems to be the same thing except with armored core mechs)

edit:

Well I found out what Carnage Heart is basically.  Pretty similar to AC, but it seems CH has always been more of a strategy game rather than an action game.

The idea of a turn based game where you program you assemble then program you units and watch them fight is pretty cool.  Especially so since there's a nice turn based strategy mode over the top of that.  One thing that was mentioned with ACFF was that it had no overarching story, or anything to make a player want to progress other than the battles.
7816  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: This Is Fun Pt 3: This Time It's Personal! (possibly NSFW) on: April 05, 2007, 08:02:17 AM
On the other hand, this pics were pretty funny.

And on warning's Sparta post:

That's hilarious.  Poor woman though.  I think he could have gotten the same effect by just yelling out THIS IS SPARTA.
7817  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [XBLM]armoured core 4 demo now up on: April 05, 2007, 05:58:30 AM
Since AC4 is crap, why don't we continue the CH and ACFF talk here?  Tongue

Well, what about Armored Core Formula Front for the PSP?

Looks exactly like Carnage Heart except with armored core mechs.

Is CH's fights only between AI or can you directly control the mechs?

Is the programming on CH better than in ACFF?

7819  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Company of Heroes: Opposing Fronts expansion on: April 05, 2007, 05:28:42 AM
Yep, it's an expansion. Includes the British, and a new German Elite Panzer Division as its new factions.

News from 1up:
http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3158508

Looks like the Allies are getting a light tank, the Stuart from the looks of it, it's shown in a screenshot. Word of a new multiplayer mode too. Also something about persistant missions.
7820  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: STALKER GOLD! on: April 05, 2007, 04:24:33 AM
Requires the patch unfortunately.  Looks like the devs responded to some modder requests and activated some code.
7821  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: New Gears gametype for ATB's Friday nights... on: April 05, 2007, 03:29:09 AM
So does this new mode increase the player count?

I'm pretty much done with GoW multiplayer, I may try out this new mode for a bit, but my problems with this game are with its core gameplay.

The cover system that's so instrumental to the single player game is a bit of a joke in the MP game.  Since the base rifle is such a poor weapon, it's a rush to who can get to the better weapons.  People just rush around with the shotgun blowing people apart.

Then, one of the best uses for cover is to use it as a cheap way to avoid fire, by using the snapping to cover feature to move you between cover elements extremely quickly.
7822  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Your Skill Level At Games on: April 05, 2007, 03:02:49 AM
Pure tactics is where I excel.  I have a decent aim in FPS games.

So I'm very good at games where I focus only on tactics, and not on both building a base and making units at the same time.

I pickup on strategic and tactical nuances of games pretty quickly, factoring in a lot of differest aspects.

I'm also pretty good at commanding others in such games.
7823  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: I officially love the PSP on: April 05, 2007, 03:02:35 AM
How was killzone liberation?

When I first saw it, because of the viewpoint  I thought it might be a turn based strategy game set in the Killzone universe.  However I learned it was an action game.  Kind of odd.

Still hoping for a TBS in Killzone, though.

Did the PSP ever have some sort of download play?  AKA, playing a game in multiplayer with only one copy of the game?

Edit: and wow, just spent a lot of time looking at the games.

I also notice that Supervillian Studios, a company I applied for an internship at, worked on Throne of Agony.  They're also working on their own PSP game, should be interesting with that much talent.

Anyone how good the bots are?  I mean, do they just help fill out a team, or would they be challenging to fight against?

7826  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: I officially love the PSP on: April 04, 2007, 08:27:14 PM
Holy crap.  Crisis Core looks great.  Even the gameplay looks interesting, although the three slot machine-like wheels in the top left corner worries me somewhat.

However, I'm a bit tired of the FF7 spinoffs all without some sort of direct sequel.
7827  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Final Fantasy Portable Games Screens (PSP and DS) on: April 04, 2007, 08:23:51 PM
Eventually I'll have both a PSP and DS.  I've been looking for a used PSP hopefully for cheaper.
7828  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Preview] Enemy Territory: Quake Wars on: April 04, 2007, 08:12:06 PM
Sounds like vehicles aren't just sitting around on the map anymore, instead they're requisitioned by engineers.  That's a really good change I think.  In BF2 the game become vehicle spam to the extreme.  Since you order vehicles now, you can tailor your vehicle use to the task at hand.

I want to try an online campaign game, where each of us starts with an army, maybe even on a map of sorts, and fight using ToW then post the results.

7833  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: I officially love the PSP on: April 03, 2007, 08:21:46 PM
The word is so far that it's a PSP2, a revision and extra features.  But as always, these are subject to change.  This comes from Kotaku, which has been right occasionally.

So for the big things are:
- included 4 to 6 GB of NAND flash memory (the same type that's in USB thumb drives)
- possible integrated camera (same camera that's in cell phones)
- possible touch screen
- UMD will still be in the system, but the way it loads is more like a cartridge, aka a slot you insert the umd into, instead of a flimsy pop out panel like a portable cd player.
- only slightly smaller, about 1/4" shaved off all around.
7834  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Enchanted ARMS- Caution to PS3 owners on: April 03, 2007, 08:53:15 AM
I actually played several hours, much to my loss.  If it got better anytime after that, well then the developers should have done a better job keeping my attention until that time.

Otherwise as above, so many things about the game kept grinding away at my patience and enjoyment that I just quit and returned the game well before the 7 day rental was over.

I think one of the main problems with the dialog was that it was written with the idea that there would be no voice overs.  So, you have to add a lot of redundant words and phrases that would otherwise be conveyed by voice actors.
7835  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: MS Disc Replacement Plan on: April 03, 2007, 08:49:38 AM
It's on the Xbox site, and everything seems legit.

At a glance nothing seems wrong, and it's practical business sense.  You're required to send in the legitimate damaged disc in order to get a replacement, they're not losing anything except the disc cost and cost for a netflix style return envelope.
7836  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [Preview] Enemy Territory: Quake Wars on: April 03, 2007, 04:06:43 AM
Those missions that the map gives various classes is a great idea, along with the more story based missions.  It's very much the asymmetrical kind of online FPS gameplay I've been looking for.  Instead of simply dropping all this stuff for players to run around crazy with in MP (e.g. BF2), they use each asset more like in a SP game, structuring the missions to be more interesting.
7837  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: C&C 3 Impressions on: April 03, 2007, 04:04:02 AM
Well I don't think anyone has pointed this out yet, but the game was already toned down in pacing from the demo.  I recently played the mission from the demo in the full game and it was decidedly more manageable.

I think I know the problem with the game.  The starting, and nearby tiberium fields in all multiplayer maps is more than enough for a player to tech up to max tech quickly.  All he has to do is build multiple refineries and harvesters.  There's no reason to go forward except on certain maps where the only extra tiberium field is in the middle of the map.  They could slow things down a bit by tweaking how much cash each load of tiberium gives, or how much each bundle of tiberium is worth (thus depleting a field much more quickly).  However, because the game is balanced that units simply don't last all that long, this is problematic.

MGS portable ops sold me on the PSP.
7839  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Enchanted ARMS- Caution to PS3 owners on: April 03, 2007, 03:46:37 AM
Thankfully, because of this it's one more reason to avoid the most horrifically flamoyantly gayest RPG character ever.

Now, before you yell at me for because such a bigot (is that the right term?) let me say that the gay character in Enchant Arms is such a ridiculous and almost offensive stereotype of gay people I know.  I really couldn't stand the character especially in regards to my few gay and lesbian friends.

Of course, the rest of the characters were just as bad, poor archetypes, poor motivations and story.  Really bad dialogue.

I hear the RPG gameplay was good, but honestly it wasn't worth sitting through.
7840  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PSP] Core system (finally) $169.99 on: April 03, 2007, 03:34:31 AM
Yeah actually I was looking at the DS and the only thing I really really wanted for that system was Jump Ultimate Stars, Castlevania, and maybe Elite Beat Agents.

The PSP's library has really increased since I last checked, some good series games, and some new originals.  The MGS portable ops really has me excited, along with the wipeout games.  A few new pickup and play games came out.  And there's some new strategy games that's pretty interesting.

Actually knew for damn sure that they'd be dropping the price soon, and that it was likely going down to $170.  It's not so much a drop from $200, but just enough for people to take notice.  And it's still well above the DS $130.  Also, I knew they'd drop the price so that PSP1s would start selling out of stores.  Once enough were off store shelves, they could announce the PSP2.

It's getting harder to resist buying one right now.  Even though I know the PSP2 is likely less than a year away.  If enough of those listed games come out, I may just buy and upgrade when the PSP2 comes out.

I'm actually hoping that the PSP2 actually comes out with a touch screen, not so much to copy the DS (although frankly, that's what it'd be doing game-wise), but so that I could possibly use it as a PDA.  The 4-8gb of flash memory would help in that regard.  And we'd start to see some more DS style pickup and play games on the PSP.  Heck, maybe even some nice real time strategy or tactical games.

That's a bit one sided to say that just because the DS is selling really well means that if the PSP lowered to $50 it wouldn't sell.  That's just as much hyperbole against Sony as certain others get flak for having for Sony.  If the PSP dropped to $50, it'd get snatched up, and by a market that's different from the DS crowd.  There'll then be some overlap, not to mention a lot more users in general, prompting developers to take notice and develop for the system.  Of course, the psp is not $50, and its target audience isn't quite the same as the DS.
