I've gotten involved in the mod community for SupCom, working with a small team right now on a 4th army called The Swarm, and insect-like army.  I'll be modeling and animating units for them.

While searching for art asset specifications for the SupCom engine, I found an interesting mod already released that alters the way resources are handled.

Actually, it removes resourcing from the game entirely.  You don't collect mass or energy, instead your commander provides everything and slowly increases how much it provides over time.  They paced the rate of income increases to mimic how quickly a skilled SupCom player's resource rate would come rolling in.

It's a good idea I think since getting an economy running while still fighting is a huge hurdle for new players, especially when some extremely skilled players (*cough* mattc0m *cough*) can get insane economies up and running quickly.  And it focuses the player on the fighting.

They're also working on a new version of this mod with also makes territory control valuable in that each mass extractor you have built gives you more resources and makes your increase rate go faster.  This makes holding and taking land much more valuable, whereas currently once you get are well into tier 2 most players ignore the mass deposits.

This may have been the RTS I was waiting for.  No base building, limited resourcing, some more objective based games.  Drop in multiplayer in an RTS game, co-op play.  Powerful abilities.  Different ability trees for different players so they have to work together.

From the videos even the pacing seems manageable, especially so since I'm not jumping between units and my base.

It's the cattle rancher's lobby.  One batch of meat tests positive for mad cow and every cow on a ranch gets slaughtered.

What's scary is that mad cow isn't something you can cook away, so far it looks like it's a prion, a kind of rogue protien.

And there are already documented cases of such rogue protiens eating away human brains, perhaps not the same ones, but it still happens.  They cracked open the woman's skull it it looked like swiss cheese.  What's even worse was that it didn't kill her, it just slowly took away brain functions until she finally couldn't do anything.

I was thinking of getting back into this game, playing some small skirmishes against each other or against the AI.  The latest patches have changed a lot of things from what I hear, so it could be worth a try now.

If anyone who is new the the game or just new to its multiplayer, some of us regulars can offer to train you in how to play.

In one match on docks, the enemy team had secured the walkway leading up to the rockets.  They would blast anyone approaching.  I picked up a sniper rifle and took up a high position opposite them in a blasted out building and picked them off from the walkway, dodging rockets as my team took advantage of my sniping to charge in.

Then later, once we had the rocket position under control, I took my rifle and grabbed a remote mine, setting it down on the walkway, the only approach to the rocket supply box.  The whole enemy team overran my team and all came charging down the walkway in a pack.  I detonated the mine right in the middle of them and killed them all.

I was cracking up so much that I didn't notice the grenade land next to me.

Also, holy crap this is fun.  It's stable, no lag so far, and it's just very very fun.

There's two problems I see right now, one is that the standard assault rifles are kind of crap.  But that was the case in the single player too.  I hope they boost the effectiveness of the regular rifles because they're way too innaccurate and weak as it stands.

The second is that if you're connected to a server, the match ends and a new match begins, there's a bug that'll boot everyone from a game because it thinks that new match is already over.

Here's the way I see it.  What features in this game are so unique that really couldn't be done in an FPS mod?  And even it if could be done in a mod, does the game have enough professional polish that could override that?

From what I've seen no.

Not to belittle the many hours those poor developers put into this game, but it's clear that the management simply didn't want to put in as much effort into the game.  Sadly, it's likely the game will do poorly, which in the marketing and management mindset kills any chance of a larger, more in depth single player Shadowrun game coming out any time soon.

Actually, one reason why demos are released after the game is released is that they're afraid it'll drive away buyers that would have bought the game thinking it was a good game for the name alone.

There's no reviews at all probably because they didn't send out review copies to anyone.  They tend to do this for games that they know will suck out of the box and want to get the suckers who buy without waiting before the rest of the community avoids it for good.

I'm not an RPG snob, and I think an FPS in the universe is fine.  But frankly I think they licensed it, didn't want to put in enough money for an RPG or even a deep single player FPS hybrid and just had the company working on the title crap out an multiplayer only FPS.

Besides, the censors let the word niggers through this time because he's not calling anyone by that name, the character knows it's a hateful word.  And to be frank, black rappers are saying the word all the time about their own people all the time.

Now before you ask for my man card, I like the sunday skin posts.

However, I wonder if all those extra Sunday Skin posts might turn away some female gamers that might have otherwise stuck around in the forums.  Might we try and restrict it to just one post?  If anything, seeing three skin posts at the top of the forum might give any visitor, not just female, the wrong idea about this place.

Had fun in my first game.  But with three of us vs. 4 AIs, Mattcom just stomped all over the AIs, all we did was supply navy support.

So I'm thinking we should try a few more comp stomps, but this time with some player made AIs which look to be a lot more challenging.  Or maybe everyone vs. mattcom.  Tongue

Make sure your firewall is letting SC connect to the internet.  Often times the "This application is attempting to access the internet" dialogue that many 3rd party firewalls have will pop up behind the game.

And if that's not the case, check your windows firewall and add the supreme commander exe to the exceptions list.

There's a few mods that look interesting for the game.  One really interesting mod alters the air superiority fighters so that they no longer overfly their targets.  Instead they try to pull behind and match speeds with their targets, all the while launching missile and firing cannons.  Then when in danger they have afterburners that they can use to escape.

It sounds harder than it is.

Just download the xbig file extractor.  Find the system.xbig file.  Extract that and a bunch of config and gameplay script files will appear.  Replace the system.xbig with a blank version (so that the game no longer looks inside it for the gameplay scripts), then extrace the mod into the directory, overwriting the gameplay script files.

Ah, but in a way, Home, will force them to get their online gaming mode up to spec.  If not, then Home will show even more how many problems their netcode has.

Also, it's a bit odd to blame lag on Sony, when Sony isn't responsible for lag in your games.  I suspect the real culprit it strange network configs and distance to other players.  The main advantage MS has in this regard is that their server filters are a lot more restrictive.  Also, since so many routers and various network hardware has been fine tuned for the windows OS and windows network standards, they have a lot more experience and support with finding ways to get through those odd network configs.

If you call walking along walls pressing the A button all the time interactivity, then yes, I want less of it.

Intereactivity to me is more meaningul than finding random items in clay pots by randomly checking them.

I think it's still very valid that we criticise them for being too old in their game designs.  The world has moved on since then.  Hopefully games like Mass Effect, Oblivion, and maybe even Fallout 3 start showing how much more really interactive they can make their worlds.

I don't buy guides, instead I just use gamefaqs.

However, I'm of the same mind.  I don't have time to search obsessive compulsively for the extras in the games that I enjoy, namely RPGs.  A lot of Japanese games have completely inane and arbitrary secrets that don't actually reward good gameplay and instead just make you want to collect weird objects or walk around hugging walls while pressing A.  Often times in these games you'll miss something because you didn't look at a poster on a certain wall, or grab one pointless object to give to an NPC 20 gameplay hours later.

Now, on the other hand if the gameplay behind getting such secrets is fun and not just a timesink, then I'll go ahead and put in that time.

Actually, I tend to think Kobra was one of the bad apples, but he either hid it better on this forum, or really tried to suppress that part of himself in order to get along with people here.

Regardless of the reasons, he kept slinking right up to the edge of the rules, and this time it caught up with him.

In a way, those kind of people are worse than ones that overtly break the rules and are quickly permabanned.

On the other hand, they could counter the desire to sacrifice ships by making the experienced based upgrades more useful, whilst still keeping the idea of modules providing base mechanical functionality.

As above, say you have a Dunov with an EMP module, sure it's an EMP ship basically, it cost a good bit more than a vanilla Dunov too, but not an amazing ability.  But what if there were specific EMP upgrades to represent that crew's in depth knowledge of that module?  For example, you could increase the size of the EMP blast, or you could turn the blast into one that expands outward in an arc at the enemy instead of a sphere, then later it can be turned into a directed Ion beam which disables ships with pinpoint accuracy.

Also, as above I'm okay with crew experience meaning the ship can take more damage, you can attribute that took the crew positioning/preparing the ship to take less damage (armor deflection etc...) and the damage control crews being more effective.  It's also another reason not to sacrifice this ship.

So modules would provide base functionality, helping to differentiate two ships of the same class right out of the box.  Then the crew experience and path  you take with experience upgrades would turn base functionality into more deadly ships.

Did anyone else miss the announcement that you can now stream media of a networked PC, just like the 360's media center?  It said you could do it through something called DLNA3.  Anyone tried this, anyone know how it works?

I mean, there's another thing Sony has caught up to MS in the PS3, and if they did it right, hopefully their version is more open than the 360 media center stuff.
