Alright, good.  slywink

Still, overall it's a bad and good thing.

Sony could push a lot of the non-malicious hackers/programmers over to developing more productive things for the linux side by unlocking more of the system to Linux.  These kind of people just want to run homebrew stuff, and aren't as likely to pirate.
7802  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PS3] Firmware psuedo cracked on: June 13, 2007, 09:37:08 PM
At this point I'd say such hacking is malicious.  If you want to run homebrew on your PS3 right now, install linux on it.  Voila, run damn near anything you want.  Also, how far along are the 360 hackers?
7803  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Going hiking in Southern California on: June 13, 2007, 04:30:41 AM
What's an REI?

(yes, I'm that new)

I found a hiking club online here, however work interferes with the first beginner hike they have on Thursday, and Father's day interferes with the other.

I think I'll start myself easy with a some walks through one of the larger parks in the area, Mile Square, drawing people and trees as I go.  It's really been a long time since I've been outdoors just to be outdoors.

After that, next week a begginner group walk with the local hiking club.  Then I'll see how things go, and if I get experienced enough to go alone, just me and my sketchbook.
7804  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Going hiking in Southern California on: June 13, 2007, 01:01:15 AM
Hi guys, I'm looking to start up a hiking hobby.  There's lots of trails here in Southern California, or so I hear.  There's plenty of books and sites on them, so while any recommendations for notable trails here are more than welcome, I'm looking for more general advice on hiking.

Things like:
Best time of day?
What to wear?
What to bring?

I'll be lugging along my sketchbook along to draw the landscape.  Later on I may bring my portable paint supplies to do some paintings.

I want to start somewhat simple.  Not too many hills my first hike.  And actually I'm not looking to become a pro hiker going all over, climbing mountains and stuff.  I just would like to get out every month or so and enjoy the landscape.  I'm often cooped up in my room or in the bunker-like animation labs at school, all places where no sunlight enters, and trees and grand vistas are seldom seen.

Definitely worth the money.
7806  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Help me with my RPG problem... on: June 13, 2007, 12:43:06 AM
Sounds like you just need to use a cheat code early on in the game to give you a few more level ups early on.

RPGs are about balanced experiences as you level up, you always start off less capable.

You could try STALKER, which isn't quite an RPG, but it is very RPG-like and you can do quite a bit early on.
7807  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Wait a minute? So now you don't need friend codes to play online? I am confu on: June 12, 2007, 12:42:44 PM
Actually, EA wants control over the online mode because it wants to keep older games in their sports series from being played, and in general control the online game, maybe even putting up online ads.

Although their FPS games also have a lot more systems like stat tracking, upgrades, etc... so they need a better multiplayer.

Nintendo is in no position to argue.  They need EA's sports games on their console, sports games go well with the Wii's controller, and EA has them.

7809  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Games returning to the Mac... on: June 11, 2007, 10:52:14 PM
Actually, I believe DirectX is propietary to windows.  So no DirectX.  However, I read an article saying that there was a DirectX to OpenGL wrapper, a driver that translated DirectX hardware calls into OpenGL calls.

I suspect Carmack had something to do with this since Id is big into using OpenGL.

But yeah, I was expecting this ever since Apple switched to intl based chipsets.

As said above, I suspect Sony is holding on to a lot of news in preperation for E3.  I'm sure there's all sorts of stuff they're going to announce and show.  I want to see Killzone 2, and there's word of some new PSP games and features.
7811  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Any coop games on the 360 on 1 system? on: June 11, 2007, 10:45:33 PM
Don't bother with Kameo co-op. You have to unlock the levels first by beating the game, and that sort of defeats the point of co-op.
7812  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Re: Avatar: The Last Airbender animation, great show! on: June 11, 2007, 12:34:33 AM
I'm kinda glad they're just going to go ahead and end this storyline instead of dragging it out like a lot of other shows do.
7813  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PSP Slim = Redesign? on: June 10, 2007, 10:38:36 PM
Actually, there was yet another rumor about a few months back that said they couldn't get the 8GB in, so they reduced it to 4GB.

This flash memory is different from the memory stick in that it's the same stuff that's in usb flash drives.  It's a cheaper kind of memory where they can get by with having bad sectors by simply marking them bad and using the rest, great for chip yields.  So 8GB is still a possibility, especially so if they hope this new PSP design will be used a lot with their online store.
7814  Non-Gaming / Off-Topic / Avatar: The Last Airbender animation, great show! on: June 10, 2007, 08:26:21 AM
Just wanted to see if anyone else out here is an Avatar fan.

For those who don't know, Avatar is an animation on Nick that's a mix between Western style writing and eastern japanese animation. Great story, characters, and animation.

It's a kids show, as such the main characters are 12-15, but everything is treated remarkably mature, no squeeky voiced characters here. Overall, it's a great fantasy adventure.

The premise sounds done before, but you are any bit interested in good animation and storytelling, you owe it to yourself to rent or buy one of the DVDs.

Basically, there's four nations of people in this world each grouped together by a natural magical affinity with one of the four elements (earth, air, fire, water). This affinity allows them to manipulate that element, which is called bending. It's mostly peaceful, due to the efforts of one mythical figure known as the Avatar, one who can use and master all four elements at the same time.

When the story sets out, the Avatar disapeared over a hundred years ago, just before the Fire nation begins a war of conquest. Two youths from the southern water nation stumble upon an airbender, named Aang, trapped in an iceberg. They learn he's the Avatar and he's been trapped there for over 100 years. Thus begins their adventure to train Aang to become the true Avatar, and stop the fire nation's conquest.

7816  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: MGS4: Guns of the Patriots E3 2006 Trailer Remastered (errection GET!) on: June 09, 2007, 11:52:48 PM
It's likely because they use cow brains and other parts to control them.  The legs are obviously fleshy, and they poop weird green stuff.  In one scene the gear charges a group of men, very bull-like.

They'll probably tie it in with some conspiracy involving mad cow disease not being a disease, but a nano experiment used to turn cow brains into weapon control platforms.  Tongue
7817  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Supreme Commander Mods: Uniconomy on: June 09, 2007, 12:44:53 PM
A new version of Uniconomy was released.  This one fixes the energy deficiency.

Direct link:

Uniconomy is a mod that removes all resource gathering from Supreme Commander.  Instead, your commander provides all the necessary mass and energy, starting at a small income at the start of the game, the resource income rate gets higher over time.  The rate of increase is meant to simulate how fast a skilled SC player gets his economy running.  You don't build mass or energy producing buildings at all, and the commander doesn't get any resource upgrades.  This allows players to focus on the battles.

All build costs are now in mass, with the energy costs folded into mass.  The only thing energy is used for are for unit abilities like stealth and shields.  In a way, this helps new players jump into the MP game since players start off on more equal footing.  Where before a new player had to both learn a somewhat complex economy and battle at the same time, now they can focus on building units and fighting.

So, anyone and to try some versus games with this?

7819  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: final fantasy for 360 on: June 09, 2007, 08:15:45 AM
Eh, they're in a tough spot since these next gen wars aren't over.  Sony needs a killer ap, Square has had a very good relationship with Sony, and it's likely Sony is paying them for some form of exclusivity.

So they can't come right out and say there's not going to be a FF game on the 360, it all depends on whether Sony can sell enough PS3s to get enough game sales to justify the exclusive.  But, to do that Sony needs a killer ap like Final Fantasy, Killzone 2, and God of War 3.

It's kind of a catch-22.  But then again, all Square has to do is just keep developing, release on the PS3 to comply with their temporary exclusivity deal.  Then see if the sales are good.  If so, they stick with Sony for a while longer.  If it bombs, there's no doubt they'll port it to the 360.

7821  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Xbox 360 rpgs on: June 09, 2007, 08:06:24 AM
And, in general, games for these next gen consoles are costing more to produce.  Which means more multiplatform, more Wii games, and more stylized artistic direction to cut down on graphics costs.

I'm really looking forward to the more US/Euro style RPGs coming out on the 360.  Although they're pretty costly to make, games like Mass Effect, Bioshock, Oblivion, and even Fallout 3 appeal to me a little more than JRPGs, usually this is because the characters and plots are more mature overall.  Whereas a lot of JRPGs have either teens, or adults that have the emotional maturity (or speaking ability) of teens put in weird and mature situations that would normally require mature responses, but end up being angsty teen responses.

A big problem with the world is that we're too afraid to simply kill off a company/corporation, instead giving them fines that are little more than wrist slaps.

Then we'll go and incarcerate real people for their entire lives for stealing some pizza or cable.

7824  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Shadowrun on: June 08, 2007, 08:40:22 PM
On the PC version, they try to balance out the PC's accuracy by a few methods.  I don't recall all of them that the developer listed in an interview, but one of them was that when a PC user turns his view quickly (you know, like the CS style instant 180 degree turn and shot in the head) they get a substantial accuracy penalty as their cone of fire widens then slowly returns to normal.
7825  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Supreme Commander Impressions/Availability on: June 08, 2007, 08:26:10 PM
They've had a slight balance problem in the first version where certain armies use more energy than others.  So they're rebalancing that.

Oh, there's no energy building either, the only thing energy is used for are unit abilities and things that need it to shoot (Artillery).  The energy costs of building units are folded into mass, making things focused on one resource type.

Also just released was a space version of the game, it's pretty cool looking especially with the scale differences.  You build things out of a home asteroid, the ships come out.  You can build fighters and such which are tiny.  In fights there's all this weapon fire going around as fighters zip around ships and ships firew beam weapons at each other.
7826  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: final fantasy for 360 on: June 08, 2007, 08:22:31 PM
So all that really means is that unless it sells poorly on the PS3, it won't be coming to the 360.  But FF13 would likely do a lot to sell the system and make its own sales.  If there is ever a Final Fantasy on the 360, don't expect to see it for quite some time.
7827  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: PSP Slim = Redesign? on: June 08, 2007, 08:19:24 PM
It's a hardware refresh, not a new handheld.  They'd fracture their user base if they added any features like that, not to mention the price would go up significantly.  That said, they probably wanted to add a lot of things like a second analog and touch screen, but knew it wasn't possible unless they made a PSP2, not psp slim.  I think what they're hoping is that with a hardware refresh, and a bunch of high profile exclusive games coming out for the system (God of War, FF7 CC, Crush, etc...), the PSP will get popular enough for them to consider a PSP2, completely new hardware.  Since the new system would probably be back to the $200 price point, they'd need the popularity of the old PSP, backward compatability, and a established user and developer base to make it succeed.

Although honestly if you want to run homebrew a GP32x is a good option.  Or you could buy an original PSP since a lot of people will sell their old old ones to get this, mod chip it, and run anything you want.  Er, that's actually what I plan to do with my old one once the new PSP is released.

The main thing I hope is that they make it easier to hold.  The grip used on a PSP is a bit cumbersome, and the way the speakers push sound out the bottom instead of the front is annoying.

Definitely looking forward to this new version.  There's a lot of good games coming out for the system

7831  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Microsoft trying to kill PC gaming? on: June 06, 2007, 07:41:42 AM
Title from a news blurb on VoodooExtreme, about an article written by Daily Game:

The article could drop the snarky and slightly whining tone, but it does bring up some good points.  If MS wanted to do something to underhandedly hurt PC gaming, this could be it.  Likewise, if they really wanted to keep PC gaming around, they could stand to actually put more effort into it.  Because admittedly, other OSes have started gaining a lot of ground, and gaming has traditionally been window's strong point.  Linux made a decent move on business PCs last year, Apple is poised to make a big push on the Windows market by switching to Intel chips, meaning software that was once only windows because it was too much a hassle to port to the powerPC chip could go to macs.

For example, one of the big reasons why we don't see direct Mac version is a lot of high profile games is that the middleware they use, such as physics and sound engines are written for PC chips.  Once macs start using the same chips as PCs, it opens up the gaming market a lot.

7833  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: final fantasy for 360 on: June 06, 2007, 07:30:54 AM
So it seems that Sony finally paid Square enough to guarantee exclusivity.  It's pretty likely that a deal was made, Sony can justify the huge cost of such a deal because they know, without a doubt, that getting the first next gen final fantasy on their system will make it sell, just like FF7 and FF10 did.

Eh, so you have to wait a few years until the system drops in price.  We'll likely see a price drop before, or to coincide with the release of FF13 considering the game is at least a year and a half away.

I've been planning to get a PS3 for a while now simply because I want to play PS2 games that I've missed, and then have a future proof system on top of that.  It's pricey, but I am someone who can use a lot of the system's extra features beyond gaming.

Versus 13 is supposedly a multiplayer capable FF13 spinoff (or side story?) that's more action based and will probably have online multiplayer.  Hopefully Sony gets Home working and generally fixes up their online support and matchmaking.  And I really hope FF13 or Versus includes co-op, which from the interviews it seems it will.

Just be glad you get Gears and Mass Effect.  slywink  I'm actually looking forward to Mass Effect more simply because of the new NPC interactions, that's more next gen to me than the latest graphical effects.
7834  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Shadowrun Impressions on: June 06, 2007, 01:03:32 AM
For me, the sweet spot is around $25 for me to buy this game.  I might have rented the game for a 4 player game night at my place, but the devs didn't bother to put in split screen, so they aren't getting my money.

Honestly, I've been playing Half-Life mods that have more content.

It's likely that by the time I buy the game for $25 or less, it'll have been abandoned by most players for other online games released.

One of the main complaints reviewers give is that the game doesn't reward good players with the win, it's too random in how is decides a victor.  As above, The Grue trounced his son at the game.

However, with party games like this the point isn't to have a game where the most skilled wins all the time, it's supposed to be random and have lots of fun minigames.  So people have fun playing those minigames, and don't have to worry about some hardcore gamer beating them at everything.
