They seem to follow the Konami Method of a Playstation game first, then a xbox port with a few new features.

I haven't played Fatal Frame 1, but I've played 2 and it's very good.  From what I've heard, 2 is many times better than 1, so you're in for a treat when you finish.  Three hasn't been ported yet, but it's only a matter of time I guess.

Man, I can't wait until they make a Fatal Frame for any next gen console.  Can you imagine how creepy things will be with all that graphical horsepower?  More lighting, more subtle ghost effects, and the same great setting and story designs?  Oh not to mention the use of the hard drive to store a lot more pictures.

I like the wandering in this game, even though I'm a big fan of good pacing in games.  The thing is, the wandering really wasn't ever wandering considering that you always know which way is the next colosssus located.  And you got to see some very well designed landscapes with what limited polycount the SotC team had to use.

Also, each colossus is not the same thing, and yet it is.  If you go in with a action/adventure zelda style game in mind, you'll be disapointed by how simple the combat is.  However, if you go in with a more adventure/puzzle mentology, then you can really appreciate the game.

As with puzzle games, story doesn't mean as much but it's there and it's a heartfelt story.  It's a very minimalist story, and by the end you understand it.  In fact, it leaves a lot to imagination what the relationship is between the hero and the girl.  They don't press on to you a soppy love story or yet another generic tragic knight saves princess story.  Instead, you get enough story to know that there's magic in this world, the long travelling sequence at the beginning shows how far the knight has travelled and how experienced he is, and hints at how far he is willing to travel to save her.  Little things like him already having acquired the sword shows that he has been on adventures.

KSD, I just want to warn you that your new front page, while nice looking at first, suffers from a big problem that many big sites have.  And that's too much information, all at once, scattered jumbled around.  Specifically, you've got a ton of text there and while that can work, you'll have to be extra careful to use many subtle cues to readers to help move their eyes around

In essence, I'm saying watch your composition.  You've got detail in your front page all over the place, there's no where for the eye rest and recuperate before diving into another area of detail.

Also start looking at your front page in terms of eye flow in general.  Fire up the site and just look at it without reading anything, try to clear out what you know of the site already and see it with a fresh eye.  As soon as the page loads, look over the site, keep note of the first thing your eye goes to, note where it goes next, where your eye gets hung up on.  Next try to think of some random game or new info that you want to find.  See if it's really intuitive to find said info on the front page.

Once you do this, adjust where your info blocks are, keep note of the colors and shapes and where they're pointing the eye too, you can adjust these to help keep that eye flow moving.  Not to mention you can use this knowledge to direct the eye over an ad for long enough for them to register the ad before moving on, and if done right they won't realize they've been marketed to.

I know the tendency is to pack in as much information on to one page, but sometimes you just have to put that negative space in there to give that text, ad, or image the impact and it needs.

Well, it can be difficult to seperate yourself from your character.  Being evil means being at least heartless in the real world, it's a kind of disconnect that some people just don't feel.

Also a lot of the time the evil results in most RPGs are simply you being a lunatic berzerker that kills anything and everything in your path, you even eat kittens too.

Few games out there have done the evil schemer, practical evil, or even the evil but cares for friends enough to do evil a plenty to help friends type of character that we often see in literature, simply because it's difficult for the developers to account for all such actions in an RPG.  Often you'll see an RPG try to handle this via the truth and lie prefixes before some important dialogue, this clues in the developer as to what the player intends.  I think planescape did this well in the way you could heartlessly use your allies.

I blame the lack of innovation in the PS3 controller on all those people who complained about the boomerang controller... without ever holding one in their hands.  The boomerang looked odd, yes, but so did many ergonomic things that we now take for granted.  I recall how people went on about the 360 S controller being odd with the offset analogue sticks, now people prefer it.  Natural keyboards seemed just funky to those ingrained with straight keyboards, and some still find it funky, but my wrists are thanking me for the switch.

Heck, even if they weren't planning on going with the boomering controller, all the backlash against trying something new prompted them to cram all these features into the aging dual shock design.  The dual shock, while great for its time, was based on the already cramped PS1 controller.  I think Sony should do what MS did and release a second PS3 controller with more modern ergonomics in mind.

As for the Wiimote, I think there were some things it could have done better, like maybe an analog stick on the main remote, but with the system's focus on casual gamers that might not be the best.

I heard they were making a sequel for the PS3.  I'm anxious to see what kind of amazing colossi they'll make for that using next gen hardware.

But more importantly, I want to see the colossi take a more active role in dealing with you, things like reaching to knock you off, grabbing, etc...  Turn it into as much an action adventure/puzzle like Zelda.  The tilting controller can be used to great effect where players try to balance on the colossus by tilting the controller.

One thing to remember guys is that the Wiimote also freaks out like this, I've had it happen to me on quite a few occasions.

But, I found the reason.  Our cell phones and wireless home phones, or any wireless peripheral. 

That's right, they do interfere with each other.  I was having so many problems with my Wii when I rented Red Steel and Excite Truck that I thought my system was defective.  Then I let my friend play and it worked fine for him, that's when my phone rang and it hit me.  So, I moved my cell phone away from the system and voila, problem solved.  My friend has an even more powerful phone and the wiimote just goes wacky in games that use the tilt and pointer extensively when he has that anywhere near the system or remote.

Likewise, there's examples of the SIXAXIS controller working flawlessly.  I suspect they should try plugging in the controller via USB and using the wired connection to see if that'll fix it.

Well, actually I think this isn't so much swallowing their pride as simply caving in to market demands.  First, they can't very well require live games to have a limit of 50mb when their own TV service downloads shows and movies that are probably well over the 50mb limit.  Also, other consoles such as the Wii and the PS3 have no such limits, although the Wii is limited by memory since it has no hard drive.

The PS3's use of its hard drive gave it a distinct advantage over the 360 in that area, something that MS wants to make sure they can keep up with in marketing terms in case Sony pulls a fast one and somehow drops price or finds some new feature.

If they were really biting the bullet and admitting wrongs, they would simply allow games of all sizes on live and develop a special license to cover bigger games on the live service instead of the 250mb limit

All in all, this is good thing all around.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you.  It's just the way people go overboard on the PS3 bashing irks me.  I probably won't get the system until there's good software, and right now the library just isn't worth $600.

I'm kinda wondering if this latest trend in consoles might actually allow PCs to catch up in popularity, despite the initial mass exodus from PC gaming.

I'm also wondering when we'll see games ported to linux so that they can be run on a PS3 with linux installed.

Simply put, my friends are my friends, but my girlfriend is also my girlfriend.  It's a closer bond often, but takes time to build up, just like any friendship.  I'd work to make compromises and if she can't make those compromises, well I have to wonder how 3-4 years in the future will be.

If I recall, this was just a small compromising of one specific HD-DVD code from a software HD-DVD player that left its data unencrypted.

They said they could revoke the code for later HDDVD releases, but who knows if this is just a spin on some very bad news, or the truth.

I'm pretty sure that like many things, the word Lightning isn't that bad of a name in Japan, or at least some derivative of the word.  But I suspect it'll get changed here in the US.

As for the story being hokey, when has a FF story not been hokey?  I can forgive hokeyness so long as the characterizations are good, and FF hasn't really disapointed in that area.

I'm definitely looking forward to the action oriented gameplay, it's long overdue for them to try new things, er well they did already try new stuff that worked in other games, but it's nice to see it come to FF12 and 13.  I'm hoping they try some sort of co-op play, no online needed, just allow a other players to control the other party members in battle, now that'd be cool.

I definitely like the character designs.  The female doesn't look dainty, she's definitely female, although a bit andro.  And the male lead doesn't look like a girl this time.

Well, another thing is that much of the content for the game is instanced.  It's like DDO in effect.  Not only that but unless they're running their own instance server farm.  Those instances are being run on player computers.  So all you're really doing is paying to have the server send you a randomized instance that your PC can already generate, and maybe do some error/cheat detection on other players.

Oh and there's some matching software.

Now, if they were serious about the new content thing.  Just try doing what Guild Wars did.  Free online play, but with constant expansions with new content.

The funny thing is, with the 360 and PS3, both MS and Sony are losing money on system sales.  If anything the 360 and ps3 are bleeding edge and the Wii is just current, but with a nifty interface.

Graphics isn't really that big an issue for me so long as developers realize the lower power of the Wii and don't try to make games with the same graphics as the 360.  Stylization and gameplay are key.  And it's the games that will determine whether the Wii was worth it to me.

Although honestly, I have been toying with the idea of selling my Wii while the ebay prices are still high, using the extra to get myself a much needed digital camera and waiting until they're readily available before buying again.

The problem with the grenades was that a guy using the grenades all he had to do was roadie run and dodge/roll everywhere and the moment he got near you he could instantly tag you with a grenade and that's pretty much a guaranteed kill.  This meant that players could pretty much run straight at you, rolling, roadie running and the moment he got within range he tagged you and you were dead.  No defense, especially in the more close quarters maps.

Once tagged, more often than not you didn't have time to follow the tagger since he'd roll away and go into another roadie run, and with the crazy range of the grenade tag it was even easier.  So with two grenades, that's near two easy kills and that's a lot for a 4v4 game.

Getting the grenades first should have to be the only tactic to defeat grenade tags.  Every other melee attack method can be countered.  The chainsaw attack can be interrupted if the weilder is shot while revving up, putting him into a short daze, not to mention the time it takes for the chainsaw to kill.  Even the basic melee hit can be interrupted, and the melee attack needs 2 hits to down, and a third to kill.  Both those melee attacks also require some amount of aiming still.  The grenade tag can hit anything at pretty good range for melee.  It works if the opponent tries to roll away or to the side.  Works instantly the moment you come out of the roadie run or roll, and doesn't require aiming to tag.  Nor can it be interrupted by gunfire.

I think simply allowing a grenade tag to be interrupted and shortening the range would have been a good enough fix.  This way if he tries to come at you straight on simple rifle fire will prevent the tag.  But if he comes from behind, well you were dead anyway.

Whoah, just saw that video, looks like a fantasy version of Warhawk.  Yeah, I'd agree Lair should have been release title, but it looks like that studio took the time to really learn the hardware and is putting it to good use.

I also like the use of the sixaxis controller.  I just looked it up and it seems the controller does have both rotation sensors and accelerometers.  The only thing it's missing is the pointer device.  One thing I definitely like about these new controllers is how they remove some weird button combinations for some moves.

I have Japanese friends that are studying animation who are all excellent artists, but they moved here to study animation because they were tired of how set the japanese animation market is in its ways.

In the original MTW1, changing this setting would only change the number of units on the field of battle.  What happened in MTW1 originally was the default large setting actually didn't display the full number of men in a unit on screen, instead it would only show a percentage of men based on the unit size setting.  Since the fighting in MTW wasn't that detailed, they could get away with this using purely mathematical computations instead of individual men fighting.

In RTW they switched to 1 model = 1 man with individual AI to match.  This made fights more detailed, but in order to get bigger battles you actually had to increase the number of men, leading to the problems above.

Overall, it wasn't a big problem, but it did have an affect on income and thus what the AI would build.

Ah well, I still want to see an Aztec Medieval era mod.

Actually, I was really put off by the horrible pacing at the beginning of TP.  If I wanted to play the farm boy, I would have played Harvest Moon.

Now, I'm someone who really liked the atmosphere the quietness of Shadow of the Colossus' intro, which had no action at all until you reached the first colossus.  But in TP, you're forced to jump through hoops to get the interesting stuff started.

Wanna know how they should have started TP?  Link goes to get horse, short and cute dialogue with the elf girl, orcs attack.  Small bit of training as Link pursues them.  Transition to the twilight realm where link goes canine, a little intro to Midna and Wolf Link.  Voila.  Action is on.  Maybe they could allow players to explore the village before the bad stuff happens, but that should be optional.  Instead you're forced to sit through it.

Hetz does have a point, it's likely anyone buying a PS3 now plans to play it, hence how much easier it is to find now in certain areas.  Usually scalpers will buy things with a much higher resale value and lower initial cost.

Say, anyone know if MTW2 has the same problem as in RTW where if you set the unit size to Huge in the option screen, it changes the economy of the game?

In RTW, setting the unit size to huge puts a lot more men on the battlefield for those really epic fights.  However, it had the problem where the extra men in the units would affect the cities they were garrisoned in, not to mention affect the population loss when you recruited new units.

I'm wondering if they fixed this in MTW2, or if they removed the unit size setting.

There's a bunch of reasons why the Wii doesn't have much of a lineup quite yet.

First, studios were waiting to see if the system would succeed in sales.  It's obvious that the Wii sold a lot his holiday season and will only sell more as word of mouth spreads amongst casual gamers.  For instance, after playing my system that I got for christmas, two members of my family plan to get Wiis.  Then some of my uncles friends came over, normally non-gamers, and they had so much fun with wii sports that they plan to get one.  So the install base is there and will only grow, studios and publishers will take notice of this.

Studios also need time to get used to the system's control scheme, with is very different than the current standard on consoles.  In order to get the best use a game needs to be made from the ground up to utilize this control scheme, otherwise it's too tacked on.  They also must realize that the Wii will have a larger install base of casual gamers who don't have the same kind of computer/gamer logic that we do.

I recall Nintendo is pretty restrictive about what games can be made for their system, too.  But the fact that some violent and mature games like Resident Evil have come out for the system means that either Nintendo is opening up a bit, or Capcom has a ton of bargaining power and Nintendo paid them a ton of money.

One saving grace is that since games for the Wii can't be that graphically intense, it means more stylization, which can lead to faster development times since the studio doesn't have to make everything realistic.

Company of Heries DVD
Volumes 1-7 of Marvel's Runaways comic book trade paperbacks (in manga size).

You know what company of heroes is, but the Runaways comics is supposed to be a teen series, but its writing is good enough to carry older audiences.  It's about a group of teens and one 12 year old that discovers their parents are really supervillians.  When ensues is their escape and attempts to takedown their parent's evil empire.

I'm looking for:
Medieval Total War 2
Neverwinter Nights 2
Any boardgames
Any gamecube or Wii games.
Any other comic books or art books.

Here's some of my impressions on recent games I rented.

Red Steel is both a hit and miss.  I just wish there was an option for another control scheme besides using the pointer to turn.  Otherwise, mediocre graphics, mediocre plot, mediocre characters, and funky swordplay are still carried by some fun gunplay.  Red Steel will probably be known as the game to show the possibilities for using the pointer control for gun games.  The next round of FPS games should be interesting.  I think the most needed thing for Red Steel was akimbo pistols, where a second player could take control of the other pistol and play co-operatively.  I don't think I'll keep this one, probably switch it out for some other games.

Zelda is Zelda, it's good and it's Zelda.  You know what to expect and it doesn't disapoint.

Rayman was a miss with me, of the first round of story mode games I was only able to play the Bunnies don't give gifts game.  I wasn't able to proceed any farther because the other games just didn't work for me.

And for some more general comments:  It's interesting to see the difference in attitudes to the Wii between casual, hardcore, and non gamers.  My family is made up of mostly casual (online poker, solitaire, and the occasional action game) and non gamers.  Almost all of them reacted well to the Wii and were able to play and grasp the Wii.  My other friends, a quite odd group, are mostly violent gamers and were actually turned away by the lack of more mature or violent games on the system.  They were also the first to comment on the graphics.  Wii sports went over their heads as they shunned its seemingly simplistic graphics and gameplay.  I almost drew them in with Red Steel, until they saw how quirky the controls were and the graphics.

Looking over the list of upcoming games I notice not a whole lot of mature games (and by mature I don't mean just violent games, just ones with mature themes and characters).  But, I suppose that's a given since it's Nintendo, at least for now.  I suspect studios were waiting to see how well the Wii would be accepted, and since it's doing very well this may be the first Nintendo console to have both great family and simple fun games, alongside a just as good library of mature titles.  Of course, that's wishful thinking... but I do wish it happens soon.  Tongue

Until then, I can play my dad's 360 for mature games with graphics galore, and in the future I'll buy a PS3, and I'll always have my Wii for family fun games.

By the way, can anyone tell me what exactly the controllers keep track of in terms of player movement?  The pointer uses the sensor bar, but otherwise that can't be used to position the wiimote.  Of course there's a rotational sensor, is there an accelerometer too?  Also, what's the word on connectivity with gameboys and the DS with this one?  I was thinking of buying Zelda Four swords and noticed it could hook up to a gameboy.

Anyway, tomorrow I'll exchange some games and try out trauma center, fishing, monkey ball, or even excite truck.

Yeah, I think reviewers are still adjusting to the new control schemes, integrating the your physical body as actual gameplay elements, and not just a control scheme, is one of the big things here.  Everyone's still figuring out what works and what doesn't now that your every move can be turned into a game response.  I suspect I'll be renting a lot of Wii games.

I'm definitely getting Zelda, that's a given.

Oh, I never had a gamecube, are there any games I should be getting?  I've already played through resident evil 4, so that's off the list, but any other good games I've missed would be nice.  How do I use gamecube games with the system, do I just put them in the same slot??  And for that matter, I've missed just about all Nintendo games since the SNES so recommendations on the VC would be nice.

Is there no online play/service for the Wii is Nintendo still working on that?  What about some sort of system link?  I mean the Wii is cheap and easily portable, they'd be shooting themselves in the foot without system link.  Especially so since the system isn't powerful enough to do 4 player split screen on some of the more graphically intensive games.
