7801  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: There is a very popular video game sound in 28 Weeks Later on: May 16, 2007, 05:52:07 PM
The sounds from Alien and Aliens are also pretty common.  Various klaxon sounds have been in use for a while, along with door openings and beeps.

The metal gear one is very distinct to Metal Gear, so it's likely it was included by a fan.
7802  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Sony is not making money on: May 16, 2007, 05:43:08 PM
Um, the PS2 was around for how many years now?  It's a very profitable system and games are still coming out for it.  I recall they wanted to keep it around for 10 years too, the same with the PS1.  It's kind of a how much value will you get out of your system thing.

10 year lifespan is actually a very good target to shoot for with a console company, the longer a console is on market, the more money it makes and the cheaper it is to make media and games for it.  Also note that doesn't mean that there won't be a PS4 before that 10 years is up, it just means they want to keep the PS3 out there and selling for that many years.  Good backwards compatability in a next gen console is important for that because it provides incentive for people to still buy games for the older system and for people to upgrade to the new one.  As you already can see with the PS2 still being popular, it's not a bad idea.  I find it funny how a good business decision is spun by people to sound like such a bad anti-gamer, sony kicked your dog kind of statement.

I also find it funny that people are now doing the whole substitute dollar sign for Sony now instead of MS.  Hell, I even found it funny when they did it for MS.  I mean, duh.  These companies want to make money.

It's pretty damn clear that Sony is going to post a loss.  So has MS, so has any company that makes high end console systems.  I recall there was an article saying how despite how the 360 is clearly pulling ahead, it's still posting a loss for MS.  The main thing is, these two companies both have ridiculous piles of cash and other markets to draw from, and it's clear that both companies are willing to spend to keep in this gaming market.  That's a very good thing for us gamers.  If you really think about it, I'm sure a lot of the features for the 360 that were added later, and a lot of the 360's problems wouldn't have been fixed if it weren't for the direct competition of the PS3.  Honestly, if there was no one else besides Nintendo competing, it's likely MS wouldn't have bothered extending its warranty.  Why?  Because when their 360 breaks and they're forced to buy a new console, they start to wonder

Will Sony pull ahead?  Who knows.  But despite things being pretty bad for Sony, it's not all doom and gloom.  They've got other products, and as said above they have a longer term strategy with the PS3, not to mention a strategy not solely focused on gaming (which is a problem)

The clear failure here was a short term strategy.  The expensive components, the bluray player, all were very long term, perhaps too long term which pushed the price up to $600, that's seriously bad for the short term.  This means they rely on exclusives even more.  But the problem with this generation is that games cost so much that they can no longer rely on third party exclusives.  So what does that mean?  More first party, or third party fully funded development.  MS already hit upon this with Bungie first party titles, and Gears of War for third party funded games.  Sony has yet to announce it's big first party games, or any third party funded games.

I suspect we'll see a lot of new things from both Sony and MS when the summer game convention scene is upon us.  I'm actually not too interested in the PS3 stuff, I'm more interested in the PSP stuff now that it's gaining steam.
7803  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Fallout 3...latest artwork on: May 16, 2007, 06:08:17 AM
Looking good actually, it's moving a bit from the classic fallout style, which is bad and good.  The more realistic style can really emphasize the world actually being post apocalyptic, rather than just one barren wasteland that seems more like a fantasy universe with lots of desert.  However, I do hope they keep fallout staples such as quirky humor and pipboy.
7804  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Nintendo and Bungie take shots at eachother on: May 16, 2007, 02:36:29 AM
Along with a few execs who left under quieter circumstances.

In fact, anyone else notice how Sony's PR stupidity has been little to nothing nowadays?

Anyway,  that Miyamoto comment is taken way out of context.  In fact, the actual quote is much larger, than the few sentences that's posted.  But yeah, basically he says he chooses not to follow trends just to follow trends, and prefers to make just good games regardless of trends.
7805  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (5/14) on: May 15, 2007, 04:35:13 AM
Innocent Life: A futuristic harvest moon.

I was looking for a game like this for my PSP.

Golfing for Locusts, the goal is to put the grenade into the locust hole in as few swings as possible.

That, my friends, would be a very cool mod.
7807  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Square Enix Party; a Few Surprises on: May 14, 2007, 08:04:53 PM
By the same logic that KH:CoM was on GBA/DS, Kingdom Hearts itself is on the PS2 and there's a good track record of PS2 game engines getting ported over to the PSP.  Also they can use a lot of art assets from the PS2 version, simply scaling them down for the PSP, much in the same way they're using a lot of assets from God of War in the psp version.
7808  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Japan sales 4/30 - 5/06 (wow!) on: May 14, 2007, 01:16:57 AM
Yep, wait a while, maybe even years to see how things turn out.  Frankly I'm not looking for a "winner" in this generation of consoles.  I'm looking for fun games and features.

A system doesn't have to "Win" to be successful and profit.  Remember that before nintendo got strong with the DS and Wii, they were still doing well with the gamecube despite it not "winning".

For example, everybody loves to bash the psp, but it's actually a financial success.  It's making money, maybe not as much as the DS, sure, but it's still making money.

Likewise, forget the PS3.  Do you realize that the PS2 is still going very strong?  In fact, it's probably the overall winner of this and the last console generation.  It's certainly not the "winner" in many people's minds, but it's still making money for sony, game sales for the PS2 are still going on strong.

My suggestion to people is stop looking for the winner, and start looking for what you like.

(Award for the most abuse of quotes goes to my post)
7809  Gaming / Analog Gaming / Re: Pax will never hold a candle to E3... on: May 14, 2007, 01:07:24 AM
Not to mention, PAX was never trying to be E3.  It may have been advertised, alluded to, or fan hyped as an E3 replacement, but it always seemed more casual.
7810  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Square Enix Party; a Few Surprises on: May 13, 2007, 11:55:01 PM
1up podcast, they were at the press event, couldn't talk about it exactly, but they pretty much gave it away by saying something like "oh yeah, you know the new kingdom hearts is coming out" yeah look for it on a handheld maybe... <then a lot more softly> maybe on the psp?  But who knows?"

It's also the general consensus amongst the better of the "rumor" sites like Kotaku and such.
7811  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Square Enix Party; a Few Surprises on: May 13, 2007, 05:55:37 PM
No, the new Kingdom Hearts is definitely being put on a handheld.  So far all signs point to the PSP.

7813  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Halo3 beta vids... on: May 12, 2007, 03:31:55 PM
I still say it's a huge missed opportunity if they don't put in some sort of Humans Vs. Covenant multiplayer gametype where you can be different classes of human and coveneant.
7814  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Halo3 beta vids... on: May 12, 2007, 09:05:25 AM
Keep in mind that they're still using a lot of Halo 2 art assets as placeholders.
7815  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: EDIT:the square enix remake thread on: May 11, 2007, 02:03:59 PM
You guys know that the rumored FF7 remake wasn't a remake and is instead Crisis Core, a prequel action-rpg about Zack, the soldier who trained Cloud and once journeyed with Sepheroth (and even met Aeris).

Not a PS3 negative thing at all, just a matter of more rising development costs and time.

Well a podcast basically confirmed that there is a Kingdom Hearts game coming to the PSP, they said they couldn't talk about it but the guy pretty much gave it away with hinting.
7821  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: As much as I like the PS3 on: May 10, 2007, 04:41:37 PM
Perhaps you should try some of the PS2 games coming out?  There's Odin sphere for action RPGs, looks pretty good.  Not sure what else but I recall the PS2 release list was still very healthy.

Plenty of older titles too.

Oh and they settled the rumble lawsuit not too long ago, so expect to see a new design of the PS3 controller including both rumble and motion sensing.  Hopefully they'll update the controller design in general because the Dual Shock 2, while great, isn't for everyone.

Last thing we need is another character with a mullet.  Tongue

Although with Dissidia, I think it's a waste of FF characters, but if the fighting game is good then I'll still pick it up.  Square does have a good track record with fighting games like Ehrgeiz.
7824  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: The Last Remnant, a new Square Enix RPG on: May 09, 2007, 05:22:15 PM
Man, you guys are reading way too much into this.

It's likely the Conquerer character is a more straightforward fighter type, probably similar to God of War.

Rush Sykes sounds like an anime character name, so it's likely his plot will be twisted with way too much dialogue and exposition.  slywink
7825  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: dbt - UFO:E - What's the scoop? on: May 09, 2007, 11:18:44 AM
Any time a scientist or tech is actively working on something you lose money from them daily.

There's a $400,000 bonus when you destroy enemy bases.

Capture any UFO you can and sell off the artifacts.  Selll all of the artifacts you've already researched, but keep 1 of each of the ones that are unidentified.

WHen you finally research plasma weapons, you'll notice you have a huge stockpile of them in base since you can't sell them until you research them (stupid idea).  You can also turn this stockpile into your main weapons cache, just sell off a majority of it.  The great thing about plasma weapons is that since the aliens use them, simply going on a mission will replenish your supplies and give you new rifles, saving you the money of manufacturing laser rifles and ammo.

They really don't do a good job of letting you know what you need to do to make money in the game.  Hell one person tried making bases in other countries and shooting down everything he could get his hands on, but they still lowered his monthly income.

Those remasterings are probably nothing more than a lighting change.  No thanks.
7827  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Project Witches (Working Title) X360 on: May 08, 2007, 08:06:14 PM
Problem is, in a lot of these games they use the hot polygonal women to distract you from the fact that the gameplay isn't all that different from say, Space Invaders.

7829  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Eye of Judgement on: May 06, 2007, 04:14:43 PM
Keep in mind that this sort of thing is very popular in Japan, on the CAGcast I heard that machines like this took up large parts of arcades there.  So there is a market.

It's likely the card playing mechanic won't be purely deck and draw driven.  It may simply be that you play these cards as they become available.  Or the game itself decides which type of card you can play at any time.
7830  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: dbt - UFO:E - What's the scoop? on: May 05, 2007, 05:09:18 AM
I've played it long enough.

It is X-Com, but in some ways it's actually worse than the original game.  Not in gameplay though, instead, it's actually missing some of the interface functionality that was in X-Com 1, 2, and 3.  While at the same time it does add some small features and other little fixes to the X-Com forumula.  But the interface problems are a major annoyance over time.

The main thing is, despite carbon copying the X-Com gameplay formula to the letter.  This game doesn't do anything significantly better than X-Com and in many ways it fails to provide the same interface enhancements offered.

I was a bit harsh on the game earlier, but now after some even more play, I realize one of the main gameplay benefits of this game that could boost it over X-Com despite the interface problems.  That's in AI streamlining.

One key thing they added to the game was that as the alien count dwindles and there are only one or two aliens left on the map, those aliens will actively try to attack and move out into the open.  While not entirely realistic, it means that you don't have to worry about hunting down that last alien.  This isn't the case all the time though, as aliens will stay inside base rooms or inside their UFO if it's viable.  There's probably a lot of other small changes.

But on the whole, as above, I'm not sure it's worth it to just remake X-Com without making the interface and turn based mode better.

7833  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: dbt - UFO:E - What's the scoop? on: May 02, 2007, 05:00:12 PM
It's X-Com like, supposedly the best X-Com clone to date.  With one problem.

You do not manually recruit, and your soldiers can't die permanently unless you fail the mission entirely.

As part of the story, If a soldier gets "incapacitated" in battle, he eventually gets brought back, but often only after a short to very long amount of time (40+ days).  This has to do with humanity on Esperanza having very advanced medical technology where so long as the brain is intact, they can bring a person back from nearly anything.

They stripped out a lot of the more original features from the game that would have seperated it from X-Com, including features that were once heavily advertised on the site like the local police and military reponse.  So it pretty much is X-Com.

There was also something about not being able to sell manufactured items for profit in CSL's review, making you rely on country contributions more.  However the devs posted in a forum that selling for profit is still in, we're not really sure if it is or isn't.
7834  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PSP] Metal Gear Solid Portable Ops on: May 02, 2007, 06:35:35 AM
Same here.  It translated well to the PSP, but the sneak mechanic suffered due to camera control issues.  So most of the time you find yourself using recruited soldiers who blend in instead of Snake, which kind of defeats the point of having Snake in the game.

After playing it for a while, the only thing that interests me is the story in general, but the gameplay gets old.
7835  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: New Sony marketing idea: Showing decapitated animals. (NSFW) on: May 02, 2007, 06:15:01 AM
Yeah, that's the problem with really entrenched and previously "successful" execs.  Get drunk on the success that they didn't really do much to earn, combined with the power to ignore any criticism coming your way equals this.  It's still just a goat, but there's better uses for them than advertising.

I think someone's been either fired or promoted for this stunt.
7836  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: F.E.A.R is not a factor for me! *spoilers* on: May 02, 2007, 04:20:19 AM
Well, they are making FEAR 2 in some form.  FEAR was a financial success and the story leaves a lot of room open for a sequel.

Things I'd like to see in FEAR 2 are, more use and characterization of the FEAR team.  You're part of a team, but the teammate characters were just cardboard cutouts that showed up every how and again.

Make the story elements told in game in a way where you can't miss them.

More varied environments of course.

Different types of encounters.  The stale environments wouldn't have been a problem if they had varied the kind of encounters you'd get more.  Instead, every encounter starts off with the AI yelling something to give away its position.  Now once the combat starts is was good.

Tone down the slow motion in some way to make it not an instant I Win button.  I mean the AI was great but if you played through the game using nothing but slowmo you never got to see it in action.
7837  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Odin Sphere on: May 01, 2007, 01:21:53 AM
Um, wow, dumping a game simply because of viewpoint.

As we've all seen, having a third dimension doesn't automatically make a game better.  Sure, a lot of 2D games are pretty retro, refusing to update their graphics to higher resolution images (to save money).  But this game is built with high res 2D graphics.

7839  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Puzzle Quest for DS/PSP on: April 29, 2007, 10:22:17 PM
Rose colored glasses.  These remakes are more rehashes of old RPGs, emphasis on the old.  RPGs have made great strides since those days when they were limited by so many factors.  Now we've got powerful machines capable of playing games like Mass Effect and such.
7840  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [psp] gurumin: a monstrous adventure on: April 29, 2007, 10:20:21 PM
It's similar to Zelda jumping where if you die you just get transported back to the beginning of the dungeon segment and lost some life.

So far the game's focus isn't on jumping puzzles but combat and exploration (and cuteness).
