I don't buy guides, instead I just use gamefaqs.

However, I'm of the same mind.  I don't have time to search obsessive compulsively for the extras in the games that I enjoy, namely RPGs.  A lot of Japanese games have completely inane and arbitrary secrets that don't actually reward good gameplay and instead just make you want to collect weird objects or walk around hugging walls while pressing A.  Often times in these games you'll miss something because you didn't look at a poster on a certain wall, or grab one pointless object to give to an NPC 20 gameplay hours later.

Now, on the other hand if the gameplay behind getting such secrets is fun and not just a timesink, then I'll go ahead and put in that time.

Actually, I tend to think Kobra was one of the bad apples, but he either hid it better on this forum, or really tried to suppress that part of himself in order to get along with people here.

Regardless of the reasons, he kept slinking right up to the edge of the rules, and this time it caught up with him.

In a way, those kind of people are worse than ones that overtly break the rules and are quickly permabanned.

On the other hand, they could counter the desire to sacrifice ships by making the experienced based upgrades more useful, whilst still keeping the idea of modules providing base mechanical functionality.

As above, say you have a Dunov with an EMP module, sure it's an EMP ship basically, it cost a good bit more than a vanilla Dunov too, but not an amazing ability.  But what if there were specific EMP upgrades to represent that crew's in depth knowledge of that module?  For example, you could increase the size of the EMP blast, or you could turn the blast into one that expands outward in an arc at the enemy instead of a sphere, then later it can be turned into a directed Ion beam which disables ships with pinpoint accuracy.

Also, as above I'm okay with crew experience meaning the ship can take more damage, you can attribute that took the crew positioning/preparing the ship to take less damage (armor deflection etc...) and the damage control crews being more effective.  It's also another reason not to sacrifice this ship.

So modules would provide base functionality, helping to differentiate two ships of the same class right out of the box.  Then the crew experience and path  you take with experience upgrades would turn base functionality into more deadly ships.

Did anyone else miss the announcement that you can now stream media of a networked PC, just like the 360's media center?  It said you could do it through something called DLNA3.  Anyone tried this, anyone know how it works?

I mean, there's another thing Sony has caught up to MS in the PS3, and if they did it right, hopefully their version is more open than the 360 media center stuff.

Actually, I'm not too sure about this "levelling up" as the main way to differentiate forces.  It seems like they've taken the level ups and made them more like the things you should be able to purchase/manufacture as modules in a capitol ship rather than interesting abilities gained via crew experience.

For example, why are extra fighter squadrons only available to a carrier after levelling up?  Does the carrier somehow grow extra space on the flight deck?  Although yes, a more experienced crew could handle, launch, and maintain a larger fighter wing, but it seems odd that the starting carrier is so limited.

Having some sort of cap ship module system along with the experience system would be much more interesting in my mind.  Modules are researched and purchased with a ship, these include things like the Homeworld 2.  Carriers could purchase extra fighter bays, extra defense grids, advanced fighter repair bays, etc...  Then the benefits from ship experience would be things like:  More experienced launch, landing, and maintenance crew allows the cap ship to pack in a few more fighters per launch bay module, giving each fighter squad 1 or 2 extra fighters and perhaps faster launch and recovery times.

So basically, these leveling up upgrades as they are right now should be modules you could build and purchase for cap ships, and the experience should be abilities that let the crew do more things with the ship and its modules.

Also in this way there can be even more ship types since you could have a defense carrier loaded with point defense modules and only a few fighter bays, then another carrier could be some kind of super carrier, loaded with all possible fighter bays, and an extra experience ability that allows them to carry and launch more fighters per bay.

It'd open up new research options too where you could research the ability to include more modules on certain ship types, along with different module types.

Whoah, hey, look at the latest artwork.  Now that has a definite Fallout vibe to it.  Got some retro buildings, dead supermutant, and survivors amongst urban decay.

Overall it just looks more realistic rather than overly retro.  Of course you must realize that this is Craig Mullin's painting style, he's a pretty realistic impressionist painter.

If anything, the Elite is an opportunity for Sony to make a price drop so that they can say the price gap is much smaller.  But even so, they're just under $500 and has Sony not discontinued their $20gb model, they might have had something to answer that challenge.

Sony's really going to have to tote all the other features of the PS3 along with announcing and releasing some exclusives this year to make up the difference.

Happens all the time.  Even Microsoft has heavily discounted their system in other parts of the world.  For some reason I don't think 20gb extra space is all that much more expensive though.

Turns out this 80gb change is due to internet TV being pretty strong over there what with their broadband being a lot better than most places in the world.  Their edition is actually labeled something like IPtv PS3, so that 80gb is a big deal over there.

Okay, so your slamming Sony for what, your unfounded idea that it'll come out for a much higher price?  That's taking things a bit far when the Sony bashing starts going to things that haven't happened yet.

Good grief people!?  All that we know is that this is the $600 model of the PS3 with a larger 80gb hard drive.  There's really no other information out there.  And actually the only concrete information contradicts the idea that it'll be priced higher, considering that after conversion it'll be $556 USD.

That's all we know.  You're reading way too much into this, and it seems like you're looking for things to bash out of hand.

Let's throw in some good speculation shall we?  It could be this is maybe a limited run, or perhaps the new $600 SKU and the 60GB drops in price a little.  Or, perhaps the cost of those $20 extra GB is so little they're using it as a value incentive and keeping the price at $600.  Then there's that little tidbit of a price drop, which is looking more and more likely to happen what with the need to compete with MS on a more direct level.

Frankly if you want something to bash, just keep on bashing the $600 price tag, that's still a very valid complaint, but don't start reading more into these rumors than there is.

Of course, you guys would also agree that the elite 360 edition was a bad idea too, right?

AI isn't worked on last, but it's usually the last system to really look good.  Game AI is a very difficult thing to pull off well.

Anyone else think the screenshots for this game are misrepresenting this game's graphics.  Many of the screenshots I see are way too bright and it washes out the game's graphics.

What I really like about this is that it has Gears of War's combat without the baggage of being "hardcore" along with Tomb Raider/Prince of Persia's adventure and exploration.

Yep, it only affects the boxed version.  The reason being was that stores were seriously undercutting the price of the boxed versions of digitally distributed games, both in a way of undercutting online distribution, and simple because they could use these games as loss leaders to draw in people to buy other things.

Also, episode 2 was slated to sell around $20-$30 right?  For most store execs, when they see that price point on a game, they immediately think bargain bin trash and they'll treat it as such unless the press is huge.

One good thing to note about this is that they're giving you three seperate CD/Steam keys.  One for HL2, one for Episode 1, and One for episode 2.  Thus, even though you are forced to buy all three, you can at least give away or sell the ones you don't want.  Not much consolation, but there's a lot of companies that wouldn't have done the same.

Good art direction and stylization, to me, is a lot better than realism.

That said, I'm done with this kind of game.  C&C3 was a hard lesson on this, and the old style base building, arbitrary rock paper scissors balance just gets annoying.  Already I could see that too much of the strategy in the game is in the building of units.

Of course, that's not a knock on Blizzard, that's their style of game and they're very good at it.

Yeah, the game probably won't sell systems, but, it'll certainly add to the list of games which will get people interested.

I have no doubt Sony chose the motion sensing controllers late in development both in response to the Wii, but more likely because they needed something to replace the rumble feature they lost due to the lawsuit.  Actually, that lawsuit was just settled and Sony and that company are announcing partnerships on future products, could be interesting.

Frankly, I don't care if one company steals ideas from another.  All I'm interested in is how well those features are implemented.  If you think about it, it only adds value for us consumers.  One problem with Sony's implementation is that the dual shock controller simply wasn't designed for motion sensing, it's clear it was added late into the system's design.

Instead, what if Sony had designed motion sensing to be in from the beginning?  Well we might have seen something like the boomerang controller, but could be broken into two pieces much like the wiimote and nunchuck.  But each half having motion sensors and an analog stick and buttons.  The handles would be longer and thicker like the wiimote, so that it can be held in various ways.

For example, the xbox1 and 360 would not be the same console today if they hadn't stolen Sony's dual analog stick design.  That's one to think about eh?  Two analog sticks may seem common place now, but back when it was introduced it was a very new thing.  Just like the Wii's motion controls are new, I suspect game consoles will be using it quite a bit in the future.  The next innovation in controllers is likely to be integrated force feedback and a small screen in the controller.

Anyway, as above, why complain that Sony stole an idea when frankly all it means is that we'll get serious games that use the motion controls, and not to mention games with more graphical goodies and hopefully gameplay elements.  Not that the Wii is bad, I enjoy mine, but looking at its line-up, it's lacking a lot of mature and serious toned games.

Most likely it's, "Sony hasn't paid us enough to keep MGS4 exclusive."  This wording is part bargaining chip, party cautious statement that it may be on the 360.

Frankly I wouln't be surprised if it was considering MGS2 substance made it to the Xbox1.

Despite the MGS series being on the Playstation primarily, it's never really been a platform specific game since its roots lie in many different systems, even the PC.

If anything, it just goes to show that games cost so much to develop these days that unless you're a first party studio, partially owned, or wholly funded by one system maker, it's best to put it on both systems.

Someone needs to get some of the Fantasy Flight games up on consoles.  The Sony guys could really promote the playstation network if they landed a deal to get those games on the PSN.

Board games, or at aleast games in the board game style, are a real untapped market for casual games.  They're really great games, but with the time and need to find a ground of people, they're difficult to gather together to play.  Internet play can fix that.

The sounds from Alien and Aliens are also pretty common.  Various klaxon sounds have been in use for a while, along with door openings and beeps.

The metal gear one is very distinct to Metal Gear, so it's likely it was included by a fan.

Um, the PS2 was around for how many years now?  It's a very profitable system and games are still coming out for it.  I recall they wanted to keep it around for 10 years too, the same with the PS1.  It's kind of a how much value will you get out of your system thing.

10 year lifespan is actually a very good target to shoot for with a console company, the longer a console is on market, the more money it makes and the cheaper it is to make media and games for it.  Also note that doesn't mean that there won't be a PS4 before that 10 years is up, it just means they want to keep the PS3 out there and selling for that many years.  Good backwards compatability in a next gen console is important for that because it provides incentive for people to still buy games for the older system and for people to upgrade to the new one.  As you already can see with the PS2 still being popular, it's not a bad idea.  I find it funny how a good business decision is spun by people to sound like such a bad anti-gamer, sony kicked your dog kind of statement.

I also find it funny that people are now doing the whole substitute dollar sign for Sony now instead of MS.  Hell, I even found it funny when they did it for MS.  I mean, duh.  These companies want to make money.

It's pretty damn clear that Sony is going to post a loss.  So has MS, so has any company that makes high end console systems.  I recall there was an article saying how despite how the 360 is clearly pulling ahead, it's still posting a loss for MS.  The main thing is, these two companies both have ridiculous piles of cash and other markets to draw from, and it's clear that both companies are willing to spend to keep in this gaming market.  That's a very good thing for us gamers.  If you really think about it, I'm sure a lot of the features for the 360 that were added later, and a lot of the 360's problems wouldn't have been fixed if it weren't for the direct competition of the PS3.  Honestly, if there was no one else besides Nintendo competing, it's likely MS wouldn't have bothered extending its warranty.  Why?  Because when their 360 breaks and they're forced to buy a new console, they start to wonder

Will Sony pull ahead?  Who knows.  But despite things being pretty bad for Sony, it's not all doom and gloom.  They've got other products, and as said above they have a longer term strategy with the PS3, not to mention a strategy not solely focused on gaming (which is a problem)

The clear failure here was a short term strategy.  The expensive components, the bluray player, all were very long term, perhaps too long term which pushed the price up to $600, that's seriously bad for the short term.  This means they rely on exclusives even more.  But the problem with this generation is that games cost so much that they can no longer rely on third party exclusives.  So what does that mean?  More first party, or third party fully funded development.  MS already hit upon this with Bungie first party titles, and Gears of War for third party funded games.  Sony has yet to announce it's big first party games, or any third party funded games.

I suspect we'll see a lot of new things from both Sony and MS when the summer game convention scene is upon us.  I'm actually not too interested in the PS3 stuff, I'm more interested in the PSP stuff now that it's gaining steam.

Looking good actually, it's moving a bit from the classic fallout style, which is bad and good.  The more realistic style can really emphasize the world actually being post apocalyptic, rather than just one barren wasteland that seems more like a fantasy universe with lots of desert.  However, I do hope they keep fallout staples such as quirky humor and pipboy.

Anyway,  that Miyamoto comment is taken way out of context.  In fact, the actual quote is much larger, than the few sentences that's posted.  But yeah, basically he says he chooses not to follow trends just to follow trends, and prefers to make just good games regardless of trends.

By the same logic that KH:CoM was on GBA/DS, Kingdom Hearts itself is on the PS2 and there's a good track record of PS2 game engines getting ported over to the PSP.  Also they can use a lot of art assets from the PS2 version, simply scaling them down for the PSP, much in the same way they're using a lot of assets from God of War in the psp version.

Yep, wait a while, maybe even years to see how things turn out.  Frankly I'm not looking for a "winner" in this generation of consoles.  I'm looking for fun games and features.

A system doesn't have to "Win" to be successful and profit.  Remember that before nintendo got strong with the DS and Wii, they were still doing well with the gamecube despite it not "winning".

For example, everybody loves to bash the psp, but it's actually a financial success.  It's making money, maybe not as much as the DS, sure, but it's still making money.

Likewise, forget the PS3.  Do you realize that the PS2 is still going very strong?  In fact, it's probably the overall winner of this and the last console generation.  It's certainly not the "winner" in many people's minds, but it's still making money for sony, game sales for the PS2 are still going on strong.

My suggestion to people is stop looking for the winner, and start looking for what you like.
