81  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: What are you buying this week? (10/20) on: October 20, 2008, 07:48:37 PM
Bioshock PS3
I bought it on the PC last year, but I want to play this gem on HDTV.

Far Cry 2 PC or PS3
The first one is still my favorite first person shooter of all time.  But I am unsure which one to get, PC or PS3.  I want to see this puppy on my HDTV, but I am not use to the console controls of a shooter.  I like my keyboard and mouse.  This is a very tough decision.

Guitar Hero World Tour PS3
I need to have a talk with my wife on this one before I take the plunge.  I have yet to try a 'Rock Band' type of game.   I'm very interested in rocking out on my favorite tunes.

Wii Music is for the family at christmas.
82  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dead Space on: October 15, 2008, 10:28:02 PM
Yeah the only disadvantage of getting this on the console is I have to wait for the kids bedtime.

Yellowking, go get the game for your 42inch HDTV.  This game is meant to be played on that with a complete soundsystem.  It is sweet, at least for the first few minutes I have played.
83  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dead Space on: October 15, 2008, 05:57:43 PM
Got a copy at lunch today for my PS3.  Wife and kids were gone for a haircut so I got test drive it for a few minutes.  Easy install.  Good short intro.  The graphics are the big thing right off the bat, stunning on my HD 42in TV.  Sound is loud... when the first encounter happens, you feel like you are in a movie, great sound and atmosphere.  Your guy is kind of at the left of the screen, third person view.  I didn't get a chance to use my first weapon yet.  You also have inventory.  Standard objectives and saving after each one is instant, no slow down.  I like this feature, if you are lost on what to do next you can create an in-game blue line path that your guy can follow to the next objective.

Until the first reviews came out, I did not know anything about this game.  After only a few minutes, the best way to describe it is a faster action BioShock in space.  Gore and horror everywhere.  Bottom line, looks and sounds like a triple A title.  Can't wait to play more tonight.

It's not the second coming of 'Justice', but I haven't listened to a new Metallica disc five times in a row (all day today) since the Black album released. I'm really enjoying it so far.

Same here.  Really enjoying the new CD.  I like most of the songs a lot, but the Judas Kiss and the Broken songs really stand out for me right now.  Can't wait to hear some of these songs in concert.  I will be there for sure.

Really why compare it to their old stuff?  No way could they repeat that magic 20+ years later.  That stuff is timeless.

Bottom line is that it is a great starting point and I hope that it sells well so that we see sequels down the line with some tweaks and a little more depth added in.

A friend of mine who works at Gamestop said that it absolutely bombed in his region. The only version that did even remotely well was the DS iteration. I'm hoping his area is not indicative of sales in general.

I saw on CivFanatics.com that the game has sold out here in the U.S. I also saw yesterday somewhere that the game has been the best selling 360 game on Amazon since it came out. That probably dropped though after NCAA came out, but it is still good.

I finally found a copy at a Sam Goody store, their last copy too.  I've been spending the last 2 days searching for a copy.  All the Gamestops around here were sold out.

I will be firing it up tonight and all weekend.

I don't think I've ever finished a game of Civ in my whole life.  This may be just what the doc ordered, but I have a feeling I'll get it and play it once.

Wow, this thread has just about sold me on getting this game.  Bullwinkle's comment is exactly how I feel about CIV games.  I have yet to buy the console version because of that fact.  I just don't like long civ games anymore because I don't have the time dedicated for 2+hour sessions.  I am about to pull the trigger.  Thanks for the impressions.
88  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Shocking News!! Game Reviewers admits not finishing the games for review on: July 15, 2008, 02:18:51 PM
Agreed.  It is not shocking news at all.  But it is still sad and embarressing to the reviewers.

As a gamer, I'm caring less about reviews anyway.  As time goes on, if you game all the time you become jaded.  It takes more WOW to get your attention.  I hate that feeling.  I always take a break from gaming when that happens.  If I was a reviewer, I would become jaded pretty quickly.  That does nothing to the casual gamer.

89  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [E3] So, what do you want to hear from Sony and Nintendo tomorrow? on: July 14, 2008, 08:25:09 PM
Nintendo - Animal Crossing Wii and DS 2.  Also, the DS 2 has the functionality to download and play all your purchased VC and wiiware games.

PS3 - I want a good RPG game to play in HD.
90  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [ds] final fantasy tactics a2 impressions on: July 08, 2008, 01:59:50 AM
Ok, I absolutely loved the first FFTA on the GBA and probably played it close to 100 hours.  I was very worried that this sequel wouldn't stand up to the original.  After about 5 hours I can say my expectations have been met, love this game too.  Everything seems improved except for the battles.  Looks to have a ton of quests.  I'm in heaven.  I do need to figure out the clan stuff, including the trials and the trial titles.

Yes, I would like a better adult story but it is not a game breaker.

i've never heard a full album by this band, and today i saw _Kill 'Em All_ on the shelf at the library, so i am listening to it now... it's kinda enjoyable in that 1983 sorta way. this would have been a year or two before i discovered Dungeons & Dragons..

Nice album to start listening to.  Their recent concert this past weekend included four songs from that album.

01. Creeping Death
02. For Whom The Bell Tolls
03. Ride The Lightning
04. Harvester Of Sorrow
05. Bleeding Me
06. No Remorse
07. Devil's Dance
08. And Justice For All
09. Fade To Black
10. Master Of Puppets
11. Whiplash
12. Nothing Else Matters
13. Sad But True
14. One
15. Enter Sandman
16. Die, Die My Darling
17. Motorbreath
18. Seek and Destroy

I am not expecting another Master of Puppets.  I just want the new CD to feel powerful with clean guitars and drums.  I want the long songs with great riffs and cool solos.  Songs that stand out on their own as epics.  That is what Metallica is about... epic songs with epic riffs.

Made it last night to floor 30?  It was the first rainbow floor.  I was killed by a giant tainted insect mob, that thing must have massive HPs.  Any tips on killing it?  My character was sealed, so I couldn't use any magic!  Sucks!  How many floors does the rainbow dungeon have?  How close was I to the end?  That run was amazing.  All but 4 of inventory spots were filled with holding Jars [5] that I had filled with items.  I survived 3 monster houses on my way to the rainbow dungeon.

I'm going to stockpile blastwave scrolls, knockback staves, 99 wood arrows, and sleep scrolls with my plated mastersword +15 and iron shield +10 for my next run.   Those are the most useful items for me.  I also have 15 more fay puzzles to do.

I still love this game.  I brought 4 different DS games with me on a Costa Rica business trip last week and I ended up only playing this one.  Probably is my favorite DS game now.

My account was hacked in March of this year.  In fact, I caught the person in the act, kind of.  I logged off around 1am in the morning... all of my characters were fine.  Then I woke up around 6am and logged back in (checking mail before I went to work) and low and behold my level 70 was stripped of everything.   eek  I quickly went to my other three high level charcters and all but one was stripped.  My guillies that were on at that time said I was logging in and out around 4am in the morning.  Duh!  They should have thought something was up!  I quickly logged an in-game ticket and changed my password... DAMN IT! by the time I logged the ticket and logged back out my account password was changed!  Thank goodness I got that ticket done ingame.  By 10:30am that day, Blizzard had my account and items back.  The gamemaster even called me.  That was cool.  But man, I just felt completely violated.  That has never happened to me.  I scanned everything on my computer for two weeks and found no keylogger.  I did install a tougher anti-virus and firewall.  I also changed all my other PC account passwords.

Horrible situation.

Low is pretty good.  I would say Practice What You Preach or New Order are up there too.  Of course the new CD, The Formation of Damnation is just as good, perhaps it might be their best.  IMO

Yeah, Testament has never been my favorite metal band but they are very good and very consistent.  Their music doesn't disappoints.

80's hard rock and metal bands are coming back in waves this year.  Many are very good... Testament and Whitesnake new releases are top-notch.  If this new Whitesnake's CD (it just came out about a month ago) was released back in the 80's, it would be a million+ seller for sure.  Instead, it won't sell more than 100K today.  Why?  Because there is no marketing or visibility for good music anymore.  My 17 year old daughter loves music and she can't stop listening to the new Whitesnake, loves it.  But if it wasn't for me, she never would have heard it.

Sorry I didn't mean to get off topic.

Yeah, their new one is darn good.  Definitely sounds like their old stuff and just as good... new order and practice what you preach.  They also are on one of the coolest metal tours in recent memory.  Heaven and Hell, Judas Priest, Motorhead, and Testament.

Not to mention that there hasn't been a party game for the Wii that has come close to matching the fun of it's launch title.

Boom Blox and Mario Party 8 say hi.  Ultimately it comes down to what you prefer and you obviously don't prefer Wii games.  I, on the other hand, play mine all the time and have a ton of games for it.  I have no issues with the wheel controller in Mario Kart like some do and actually prefer it to the wiimote and nunchuck controls.  I was playing Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles last night and loving the Wii Zapper for giving me that light gun game experience.  Controlled very smoothly.  The throwing controls for Boom Blox just feel great and it wouldn't be the same with a normal controller.  Something about hurling that ball that makes it great.

Also, I'd love everyone's proof of people just not playing their Wii's anymore.  Everyone says it, but I would think if that were the case, then word of mouth from parents who bought one and had it collect dust woulod get out and sales would dwindle.  As more anecdotal evidence to counter your anecdotal evidence, I know 3 families who are not gamers at all who bought Wiis and play them all the time.

Why are people having such a hard time believing in the success of this console when the numbers command respect?

I agree with Grue.  Sure you can call the wii gimmicky all you want.  But ultimately it comes down to "is it fun".  I've been a gamer for a long time.  The wii is original and I find the motion control to be a refreshing change in gaming.  Boom Blox and Mario Kart are the most recent games that are just a blast to play.  And my kids can play them with me.  Which is another big plus.
107  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mystery Dungeon: Shiren the Wanderer is coming to a DS near you! on: May 07, 2008, 01:58:20 PM
It might have been me.  I ran the rescue around midnight last night.  But I am unsure if my DS reconnected to the server to say that I was successful.  Anyway, glad you were recovered.  Looking at the list of people to be rescused last night, you were on the furthest floor.  The long run was tough!  That includes the very first room on the first floor.  I was immediately surrounded by 4 mobs!  Luckly I brought a sleep scroll with me from my warehouse.  Saved me right off the bat.

The game is just a blast to play.  I think it tops puzzle quest which I spent more than 50 hours with.  And I haven't played much WoW lately since buying this game.  That is saying something because I have been playing WoW since the first day of release back in 2004.  I really hope the developer makes a sequel and keeps it on the DS... possibly put it on the next-gen DS.

My first step into a hidden Monster House on Floor 21 was right on a Riceball Trap. Only option was to run, but a double-speed robot thingie beat me to a pulp before I transformed back into human form. Dead.

Anyone up for making a rescue run? I put in a WiFi rescue request (name is Godbolt). Rescue number is 0000-0000-5316. I'd appreciate it, as I think I can make it all the way with the gear I've got at the moment.

I won't be on until later tonight.  In case no one has rescued you, I will look you up and give it a go.

Go into your inventory, select the herb of sight, and throw it to him... your character has be turned to the direction of the NPC.  The NPC will take it and use it.

Yep, this is what I live by.  I could easily be a game nut, but that rule I made with my wife allows me to be guilt free of how much I play on a game or console.  Guilt free is awesome, but on the bad side of that rule I don't get to master many games and I definitely don't master any MP games like COD4.

I'm very lucky that my wife goes to bed very early- like 9pm or 9:30.  Meanwhile I usually hit the hay at about 1:30am on a work night so that still leaves lots of gaming time every night.

Lucky!!! My wife goes to bed around 10pm.  But I am so non-functional at work when I game past midnight.  So, my usual quittting time is 11:30ish.  I need to decrease my sleep requirements damn it!  Anyway, I am very happy with that mutual agreement and I wouldn't want to change it.  Because I could easily be addicted to 8+ hours gaming per day.

1. The camera system needs some work. When walking, it is too floaty and doesn't follow the player like it should, 100% of the time. As such, I got REALLY nausious when going after the guy in Vlad the not so terrible, in the construction yard.

Yeah, same nausious thing happened to me.  It did get better as I played the game.  I also agree about the camera system.  I didn't have much problems with the walking camera, it was the driving camera system that seemed to always float too low when driving uphill.  I had to adjust constantly with the right stick.

Minor quirks though.

It might have had something to do with the fact that Best Buy is selling them for $9.99.  I just can't bring myself to pay $14.99 for a $0.75 piece of plastic.  I plan to pick up wheels 3 and 4, but not till I can find them at $9.99 or less.

Gamestop had them for $9.99... that is what I paid.
