I want to get it but in my part of the world, the MP is hopeless with the pings I get and lack of local servers.

I may still get it though.

Awesome . Awesome, Awesome game

Just past that part a little bit and I went back and replayed it. Didn't know that could happen. Thanks! I also blew that achievement but no regrets doing it.

I finished it yesterday and I loved it.

I don't like the Ubisoft Uplay crap but the game runs pretty beautifully on my rig at 1920x1080. It probably could look better but the gameplay makes up for the lack of eye candy.

It just started playing here in Jakarta after the import ban of foreign movies and I watched it over the weekend.

I don't think it was too bad, the action scenes were a bit much at times but it was entertaining since I had no expectations going in.

Can't believe no one mentioned Alan Tudyk's Firefly reference!

I tried the steam demo last night and uninstalled the demo right afterwards. The game is way too arcadey for my taste. The graphic is nice but as for gameplay, I'd rather go back to Sid Meier's Pirates! remake.

Galaxy on Fire 2 THD is nice for Tegra2, it's free up to a certain point then you have to pay $15 to unlock the rest of the game.

3rd-party DRM: Ubisoft Online Service

about the only saving grace so far is that it doesn't have the additional line 'Ubisoft requires a permanent Internet connection to play this video game at all times' yet.

This may prevent me from buying it. Not because I'm boycotting Ubisoft due to their draconian DRM scheme but because in my neck of the woods, the internet is like the electricity, they go down and random times.

I'd really like friends that we could do things with - hit the movies, play some board games, have em over for Rock Band, burn some meat on the grill, go camping, etc. etc.   Yea, these people should 'get' me and we should be able to talk.    Best friends come from that same pool, after trust is built I think.

I find that when my close friends get married and have families of their own, the hang out time diminish significantly, especially after kids come into the picture. Not saying it's not possible anymore but it is tougher to arrange.

Happy birthday Ron!

I'm one of those people with very few friends but the few I call my friends are pretty darn close, the rest are just acquaintances. I tend to keep my co-workers as work friends only and hardly ever hang out with them outside of work, and most of the friends I hang with are friends from high school and new friends that know my friends, and a few from the forums that I've met.

Sorry, not really helping in the "how to make new friends" department.

Huw, any update on which distro you like best now?

My work just sent me to Linux training, so I have some basics along with stuff I picked up at work. Work basically uses CentOS 5.5 with KDE and I'm kind of looking for a decent distro to learn on. So far, I've tried Ubuntu (with KDE installed), OpenSUSE, Mandriva and currently trying out Sabayon. All these are on VMs since I don't have a dedicated machine for it yet.

Right now I'm most familiar with CentOS since that was what I use at work and what I was trained on. I don't like the Unity on Ubuntu 11.04, just seems weird to me. I like the look of OpenSUSE, it's very polished. So far, Sabayon is pretty nifty as well. However, I'm running all these on Virtualbox VMs, so they just run fine, no hardware issues, lol.

I guess I'll give them a try and see which one I like best. Right now, I'm leaning towards Ubuntu (with KDE) and OpenSUSE.

There have been streaks in this game where I can't catch a break and keep losing match after match and just makes me wonder why I still play. Then there are matches where I just completely blew away the competition, like a couple of nights ago in Abbey. I was in my M5, lowest tank on the team, going against lowes, tigers, etc. Ran up the middle road all the way to their base unopposed, killed 2 arties and spotted the 3rd for my team's arties to take him out and single handedly capped the flag. That was a good game.

Tonight though, I'm on a losing streak, so far, no single victories yet.

112  Non-Gaming / Hardware / Software Hell / Re: Monitor for my laptop on: May 09, 2011, 08:57:37 AM
You should be fine with any monitors. Once you hook it up, the laptop will have a couple of options for you to choose from: display on the laptop screen only, display on the external monitor only and display on both. If you're going to go higher resolution than what your laptop display can handle, I suggest going "display external monitor only" option. You can set the resolution higher on the monitor alone just by using the windows display properties. The one thing you should look out for is the external monitor connector on the laptop itself. All laptops, including netbooks, have VGA out but some newer ones will have HDMI out as well, so make sure the new monitor will have the connection that you need.

Since it's a laptop, the video card may stutter with the higher resolution on the monitor though, so you may have to adjust the graphic options of your games once you're playing on the monitor.

The special is going on for VE day, 8-10 May I believe. The news also said some half-priced items in the store, though I didn't see what they were. The 5x xp for first win is a good thing, maybe I can get out of the Hetzer sooner.

Finally got my PzIV with the long sniping gun and that's gonna be my mainstay tank for a while. Working to get the JgPzIV right now, then either the Hummel (from the PzIV line), American M7 or the USSR's T34 tank.

Still debating if I wanna get 1 month of premium account just to get all these tanks and maybe an extra slot in the garage.
114  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Mount and Blade: With Fire and Sword on: May 06, 2011, 09:07:35 AM
I have it and I've been playing it and I find it pretty interesting and a decent change in tactics from M&B and Warband.

In battle, you'd basically follow the combat tactics of the period. Have your melee guys up front, muskets on the 2nd row (preferably on a higher ground) and cav to the side for a flanking charge. Let the enemy come to you in ranks and let the muskets thin them down and charge the cav as they reload.

If you're charging from the front, it's pretty much a guaranteed death. You can still lead your charge, just gotta wait for the right time (after the 1st volley or in between volleys) and charge from the flanks.

The main thing to keep in mind when you're a fast, light tank playing with the heavies is your job is to scout, not to kill.  You'll receive half the XP and half the credit that anyone gets when they fire on a target that they can't hit without your spotting.  This is most obviously important for artillery who shouldn't be able to get line-of-sight on any of the enemies (if they can, they've either screwed up their placement or your team's defense has collapsed).  However, heavies, mediums who play as snipers, and tank destroyers all can often hit targets far beyond visual range if you can highlight the targets for them.

The After Action Report makes it seem like scouting is all about getting the first spot on the vehicle, but it's not.  Pay attention to where your heavy hitters are and where they have fields of fire.  Try to find target for them that they can hit, but which might be outside of their visual range.  For artillery, it helps to tell them where you are going and where targets might blip up on their display, since moving the area the artillery is targetting can be time consuming.

Don't rush off at the start of the game.  You generally don't want to spot targets until your team can take advantage of them (although arguably determining the enemy heavies' line of advance can be useful, even if people won't be able to shoot at them individually).

I also like looking over the enemy tank composition before the match starts.  See how many enemy lights and fast mediums there are.  These are likely to be coming for your artillery.  So it sometimes pays to hold back a bit and take these on as they come in.  Friendly light tanks are amongst the best anti-light tank hunters available to protect friendly artillery units.

I scout but for some reason the PzIII is insanely easy to track. I usually sit back for a minute or so depending on where everyone is going and try to head off any fast movers going towards our arties but with the derp gun, if I miss the shot, it takes forever to reload and shooting accurately while moving is a no go. Or I go towards the enemy's positions and try to scout for our heavies but once I'm tracked, I'm sitting duck, plus once I run into an enemy heavy, 1 shot usually finishes me off.
116  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Re: World of ww2 tank mmo on: May 03, 2011, 03:03:34 AM
I'm currently grinding up on my PzIII trying to get PzIV and it's a pain to do without premium account. I keep getting placed with the big heavies that would one-shot me and even with the derp gun, I can barely make a dent. I'm about halfway the xp required to research PzIV. I may need to plunk down for a month of premium just to make the grind a bit more bearable.

Don't get me wrong, the PzIII is a fun tank to play if you're going against the right tiers. But when put against KV-3, IS and Tigers, it's just not as much fun, especially when they do that round after round after round.

Once I get the PzIV with the turret & gun upgrades, it'll be time to go for the JgPzIV grind. Not looking forward to the Hetzer though, lol.

I found the best balance between killing ability and cost to fix are the tier 4 and 5 tanks, that is if you're not running a premium account. The higher tiers are just too costly to fix unless you can be an ace in every match.

I don't know how many states ban talking on cell phones when driving, but people using them have introduced a new worry for motorcyclists.

Like as if we needed more.

Here in Jakarta, some bikers talk on cell phones while riding and not the handfree one, they also can text and ride. But I guess lives are cheaper in third world countries.

How fast are these guys going? I typically do 80-85 mph on my bike. The wind would rip the phone from my hand at that speed.

They ride slower when using phone, but it is still dangerous to themselves and others around them. Bikers in Jakarta ride much slower than US bikers but they tend to not follow traffic rules, they don't stay in lane, they don't signal before cut in front of you, etc. If there is a space, they'll try to fit their bike in. That is one reason why we have serious traffic jam in Jakarta, cars have to move  slower to anticipate bikers.

Not to mention the bikes way outnumber the cars on the road. I read a report that every month, in Jakarta alone, 700k new bikes are sold, but considering $50 - 100 down will get you one to take home on the spot, that number doesn't surprise me. Plus the bikers here ride like they own the road, they have no courtesy and no fear, since in most cases of accidents, the driver/owner of the bigger vehicle is "always at fault" regardless of the traffic laws. If it is clearly the motorcycle's fault, most of the times they will flee the scene of the accident and get away.
