401  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [CG-Review] Mortal Kombat: Deception on: October 04, 2004, 10:12:46 PM
Yeah, I know, the previous game had the move list too. So versus matches ususally revolved around looking at the list for a minute, memorising 3 simple combos, and then frantically trying to pull these off.

I liked the game, but I can't go back to it after the masterpiece that is NG smile

EDIT: No, most games revolved around selecting Scorpion, and yelling "Get ooover here" a lot biggrin
402  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [CG-Review] Mortal Kombat: Deception on: October 04, 2004, 09:46:49 PM
Do you still have to memorise all the combos? Or are they a bit more 'freestyle', like in Ninja Gaiden? That's what I didn't like about the previous MK, the fact that you can't play it with a buddy who doesn't know any of the combos by heart.
403  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What game to buy? And some other questions on: September 24, 2004, 04:12:43 PM
So, I finally went for Burnout. I sold some titles I didn't play anymore (Marvel vs Capcom, DTM driver, MoH:AA) and got the game pretty cheap that way. And it's true what everyone says, it's a BLAST to play! I haven't had this much fun with a racer ever!!

I have PGR2. I thought it was fun. I was mistaken smile Burnout, now THAT's fun! The one thing I don't like about racers is the make-one-mistake-restart-the-race mechanic, and this game doesn't seem to have that! You can crash a lot, and still end up first! (Except for those beat the clock races, but that's how they should be too).

So, to everyone who advised Burnout, thanks!

And to anyone who doesn't like racers much, because they're too difficult, or make you memorise the tracks, or whatever... This game is different, it's arcade racing perfection! biggrin
404  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What game to buy? And some other questions on: September 10, 2004, 09:40:05 AM
Thanks for the fast reply, Lockdown smile You may not recognize me, because I don't post a lot, and I've been a member of CG since the very beginning.

I'll wait for a couple of other answers before deciding, since you basically said that ALL these games (except perhaps Spidey) were worth buying.

Perhaps I should elaborate on my tastes: I love Ninja Gaiden, Halo, Crimson Skies, KOTOR and everything coop. (There, I just managed to name games everybody likes...)

I like hard games, except hard driving games, and it doesn't matter if a game is short, as long as it is 'intensive'. Like Max Payne 2, or PoP... I tend to play these games a couple of times anyway...
405  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What game to buy? And some other questions on: September 10, 2004, 09:18:47 AM
I don't have a lot of money, so I'll probably only buy one of these games. Which one would be best?

1) Spiderman 2: Got a LOT of praise, and then suddenly a lot of criticism... How is it after the hype?

2) Burnout 3: I have PGR2, and I'm not much of a race fan. Crashing however, sounds like a lot of fun. Is it fun on split-screen?

3) Beyond Good and Evil: Still haven't bought this one, but it seems like a short game...

4) Fable

On another note: Would Doom3 run on a AMD 1.2 Ghz with a Geforce Ti4400 and 512 MB RAM?

And a final question: I have Hunter: the Reckoning. I bought it cheap for coop-play, but me and my buddy don't like it. Are the other RPG-lite games the same? D&D Heroes, BG... ?
406  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Gamecube] Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow Review Discussion on: August 15, 2004, 07:33:45 AM
"Not surprisingly, the game itself is very dark.  Surprisingly, many of the levels are so dark that they border on on unplayable.  I had to adjust the brightness on my television in order to play, and even then was forced to use the night vision goggles in situations that realistically shouldn't have required them."

Also very true! Like the jungle missions. They take place around sunset, with a nice red skyline, yet you can't see a damn thing! Nice to see someone else noticed this too.

I guess it's my biggest disappointment of the year (although Full Spectrum Warrior didn't live up to expectations either). Either way, I haven't tried multiplayer yet, because I don't have a headset, and people won't play with me then. I hope it's as good as they say...
407  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [Gamecube] Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow Review Discussion on: August 14, 2004, 10:14:02 PM
"Splinter Cell ultimately is more like playing a game of 20 questions against an Ubisoft level designer than playing a videogame."

That's a pretty nice comparison. Your review is quite harsh, but I welcome it. All other reviews were raving about this game, and even though I loved the first one, Pandora Tomorrow just isn't as good.

It's far more linear, has lousy missions, a bad story, fewer action scenes etc... (small spoiler about mission 3 now:)
Take the train mission. Every critic and his grandmother loved that one, but it's as linear as Dragon's Lair for crying out loud!

Oh well, it's not a terrible game either smile But it's nowhere as good as the original...

EDIT: Which, admittedly, was linear as well, but at least it was novel biggrin
408  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PC-PR] Scarface coming to the PC, based on hit movie on: August 10, 2004, 08:04:14 PM
I can see that the movie is a classic, but I didn't find it up to par with the other maffia-films... The drugdeal-gone-wrong-scene from the beginning is pretty shocking  though. I still shudder just thinking about it...
409  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ninja Gaiden Hurricane Pack is out! on: August 10, 2004, 03:44:50 PM
Yes, the original game stays, with the 3 difficulty levels. The new content is only available in the Master Tournament.

I haven't got a Live subscription myself, but I got 2 free months from a friendly ConsoleGold member. If you have a coupon lying around yourself, I highly suggest using it!
410  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ninja Gaiden Hurricane Pack is out! on: August 10, 2004, 08:08:32 AM
Well, I made it to level 5. And as usual, now that I'm starting to get the hang of things again, they scale the difficulty up again smile

While I enjoy everything the game has thrown at me thusfar, this hurricane pack does make me wonder about one thing: Does it make the game more fun?

While new weapons and new enemies are always fun, the incredible difficulty does not make the game any better I think. We'll see how things turn out in later levels...
411  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ninja Gaiden Hurricane Pack is out! on: August 09, 2004, 08:13:00 AM
Just downloaded it, and have played a little bit.

Well... it's HARD! I know, I know, all the previews said it would be, but really... Believe the previews! smile

I haven't even gotten to the first save point yet, but that's also because I'm trying out new things, and I'm too stubborn to drink a potion.

First conclusions:

1) The new Intercept move will take some time to master. You need to press block at just the right point, and I haven't gotten that quite down yet. Then again, I play the game relying on blocks, rolls and counters, so I'll need to rethink my strategies I guess.

2) The new weapon (Lunar) looks absolutely cool, and its combo's make combat seem like a well orchestrated dance. The animations from this game are just light years ahead of the competition I feel.

3) It's HARD smile I mean, black ninja's coupled with white ninja's coupled with no upgraded weapons, techniques or health increase??

Oh, and the black ninja's have gotten a new move. A 'grab' that impales you on their sword, and ignores your block. Shit.

As a frame of reference: I've finished it twice on normal, and once on hard, never once having to buy a potion from a store.

Maybe I'll post some more later, when I've actually reached the first save point slywink
412  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / So... uhm... anyone have a 2 month Live trial? :) on: August 06, 2004, 10:32:04 PM
Hey all, thanks for the replies again.

I just want to say that I don't need a trial-code anymore, because Thin_J has provided me with one. So a big thank you to Thin_J, and to Dragon as well for looking into it.

If you want to kick a newbie's ass sometime in the next 2 months, my nick is 'De Raketman' smile
413  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / So... uhm... anyone have a 2 month Live trial? :) on: August 05, 2004, 08:20:38 PM
Thanks a bunch Dragon, I hugely appreciate it! But if you can't get it, no problem either smile
414  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / So... uhm... anyone have a 2 month Live trial? :) on: August 05, 2004, 04:38:30 PM
Thanks for the replies, I know I must sound like a total jerk this way, but still, I'd like to check out Live before buying it...
415  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / So... uhm... anyone have a 2 month Live trial? :) on: August 05, 2004, 02:14:00 PM
After trying for about 2 hours, I was finally able to link my xbox up to Live. I had 2 free live trial coupons, so I figured I could try out the service for 4 months, and get the free ninja gaiden download as well!

However...

Evil men at microsoft have decided to limit these coupons, and they expired 4 months ago. Never mind that this comes from games that I recently bought...

I'm sure it's a longshot, but if anyone has any free offers left, I'd be really grateful for the acces codes... I don't know what I could offer in return though, other than my undying gratitude and male heterosexual love.

Oh well, I don't expect it, just thought I'd give it a try... smile
416  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / rogue squadron on xbox? on: July 25, 2004, 04:03:11 PM
So I caved and bought used copies of both Rogue Squadron 2: Rogue Leader and Crimson Skies.

I like Crimson Skies the best so far, because I just can't seem to get the controls for Rogue Squadron down... I never see any TIEs (my tv's too small), I get disoriented, radar seems useless so far, and there's no 'flying' feel to the game.

But I'm sure I'll get better with it, and grow to like it... This game is too pretty to have shallow gameplay I hope smile
417  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / rogue squadron on xbox? on: July 24, 2004, 08:34:57 AM
Yeah, I found a link:

http://www.totalvideogames.com/pages/articles/index.php?article_id=4762

And apparently it comes out when the original movie trilogy is released on dvd... Still, it's awfully quiet about the game... You'd think they'd devote a website to it at least...
418  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / rogue squadron on xbox? on: July 24, 2004, 08:18:22 AM
I don't recall exactly, but I think there's a tidbit of information about them on gamespot or gamespy or something... let me see if I can get a link...
419  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / rogue squadron on xbox? on: July 24, 2004, 06:48:43 AM
I read a looong time ago that factor 5 were going to release their 2 latest rogue squadron games as 1 package for xbox... But there's no info, anywhere... Anyway, I've got a gamecube now, so it doesn't really matter for me anymore, but are the games worth it? Is the coop fun?
420  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / co-op gaming on: July 20, 2004, 09:01:03 AM

Well, my friends and I loved playing through D&D: Heroes together - 3 of us did, and it is only $9 now, I think.  So you can't really lose picking that up.  If you don't like it, no big deal.  Sounds like CoN is the main contender, though.  Or, why don't you just play Diablo 2 with him?

What systems do you have?

Well, we are playing through diablo 2 now smile . He's an elemental druid, and I'm playing a trapper assasin...  But I've played through it a zillion times now, ever since it came out, so it's getting just a liiittle boring for me smile

But what are the alternatives? I have Sacred, but I'm waiting for the 1.7 patch, cause I don't care for it in its current state. And gladius I have too, but I don't think my buddy will like that one. A game has to grab him immediately, or he won't like it. But this thread has been pretty helpful in that regard, I'll check out the mentioned games, see if I can get one cheap...
421  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / co-op gaming on: July 19, 2004, 09:13:30 AM
What would be the best one out of all these titles? I haven't got any of the games mentioned, but my "main cooperative games-friend" has recently fallen in love with diablo2, so he'd like these games too I guess...

I'd like a game that's user friendly, has lots of cool loot, and where team work would be needed.
422  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Yap Yap YAAAP! on: June 24, 2004, 02:14:57 PM
I have never found too much dialog to be a problem. But I am one of those people that watches cut scenes over and over again, and wants to read every book/text there is in a game.

One exception though, Metal Gear Solid. That game had 5 hours of gameplay, and 15 hours of dialogue. And it wasn't plot-evolving dialogue, it was mind-numbingly dumb chit chat.

Oh, and one other exception: intros. If you buy a game, you want to know how it plays, so the intro should never be too long.

But other than that, no, I enjoy dialogue very much so smile
423  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / new ninja gaiden content! on: June 24, 2004, 12:05:45 PM
Same here frown

Oh, I was browsing GoneGold as well, and the subject was already brought up there. Plus, a link to a site offering some more tidbits...

Here's the link: http://xbox.ign.com/articles/525/525886p1.html
424  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / new ninja gaiden content! on: June 24, 2004, 11:46:09 AM
Holy macaroni batman!

New weapons, bosses, enemies and better AI! And fully controllable camera! And they speed the game up!!

My only hope is we'll get the same content from a cd, because I don't have Live (yet)...

EDIT: Oops, I didn't see it was already posted at the news section from ConsoleGold (because of the disabled headlines). Sorry Knightshade Dragon...

The camera is VERY responsive; if it's at the wrong angle you can fix it with a button press. There is no sluggish or wildly obtuse procedure to look where you want to. It's too bad the camera didn't know which way you wanted to be looking automagically, but it's still great as-is.

That was exactly my problem with the camera in Ninja Gaiden.  Why the hell couldn't they at least have give me control over it with the right analog stick?  That was a retarded completely decision.

That was a deliberate decision. The action in the game is too fast to have to 'aim' the camera. And this game has one of the best 'smart' camera's I've ever seen.
427  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Next Nintendo console VGA compatible out of the box. on: June 10, 2004, 06:44:24 AM
In Europe (or Belgium at least), prices are different it seems:

PC games: 50 €
xbox games: 70 €
cube games: 70 €
n64: 70 €

There are exceptions to this rule off course, but xbox games aren't any cheaper than gc games, and gc ones aren't cheaper than n64 games, in spite of the cartridge difference... And I can't really blame nintendo, it does make copying games a lot more difficult I guess.
428  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Doom deservedly gets a 5/10 in Xbox Nation on: June 07, 2004, 08:24:11 PM
DragonFyre, that's a good remark there... You could say the same about Half-Life. People rave about its great storyline, but really it's just a tale of aliens vs government mock-up vs you. It's all in the set pieces, the atmosphere, and the way the player uncovers the story I think.

So I'd agree on the storytelling vs atmosphere debate.

On the other hand, Max Payne has a decent story, albeit pretty complicated (the sequel that is), and it does add to the game... hmmmmm. However, I guess in MP's case, it's not the story that draws you in, but the characters and your emotions towards them. In particular, Mona Sax.
429  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Really disappointed with Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow on: June 06, 2004, 10:03:16 AM
I really liked the first splinter cell, and although the second one improves the controls and items a bit, its levels are lackluster and uninspired.

I can't believe all the great reviews this one got, it's a true sequel, but the original is so much better!

And I find it a lot easier too, although it's artificially made harder in some parts. For instance, in the first game I almost never knocked a guy out by running to him and punching him (because he would shoot me), whereas in the sequel it's my main method of taking out bad guys!

Yes, the train level is cool, yes jungle levels are cool, but they lack substance.

And there's hardly any shooting-action too, no big firefights. I agree that this is not wat a sneaker is about, but it adds variety, and excitement to have a big finale at the end of a mission.

Still, I haven't got Live, so I suppose the sequel is all about the multiplayer part now.
430  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Another Return of the King issue on: June 01, 2004, 06:53:53 AM
If you stand close to your team mates, you'll see them glow up. This means they're healing. So just fight near the person that has low health. And especially keep an eye out for legolas, he can die very fast. Unless you're playing as Legolas of course, in which case you will die very fast smile
431  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ninja Gaiden...Not so Hard on: May 20, 2004, 08:41:27 AM
I have a question about the armlets (sp? I mean the bracers) in the game, so instead of making a new thread I'll post it here.

I have 3 armlets so far, but I can't really tell what they do.
The armlet of the Sun increases my attack power... Does it give me more damage? How much more? I haven't noticed any difference yet, except maybe the fact that my attacks are blocked less?

The armlet of the Moon increases my defense. How? Do I take less damage? Can I block more attacks?

The armlet of Benevolence I understand. Apparently it gives me 20% more gold, or at least that's what a certain FAQ claimed.

So, can anyone shed any light on this? I notice a difference, but I can't quite put my finger on it... Quite frustrating smile In general, I keep the armlet of the Moon on, because I like to block a lot, and then strike when an opportunity arrises, but learning the advantages of each armlet may give me some more insight into this great, great game biggrin
432  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ninja Gaiden...Not so Hard on: May 19, 2004, 09:08:52 PM
I just got to level 10 myself. I do think it's hard though. Some people compared it to Viewtiful Joe, but this one I think is harder.

I love the combat mechanics, but sometimes the game is just too harsh for its own good.

Spoiler about level 9:
*
*
*
*
*
*
Take the boss battle for instance. First you have to fight a tank. And another one. You find one full health bottle (yeah!), and then there's the helicopter. He's tough as nails, but after you killed him, you find a small health bottle (yeah!). After that, you get shot at from a tower by infinite rpg soldiers. Having taken out the tower, you get to a room that's populated by 3 rpg soldiers. They fire at you within 1.5 seconds, and you can't even see them at first. Or dodge them. So if you have little health left, you're screwed.
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
So I think it's tough. I like the game, very much so, but they should give me some more potions smile Especially since I haven't yet bought any, because I'm too cheap and want to save my money for upgrades smile

Oh, and I hate the jumping parts.
