361  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Prince of Persia: WW Combat...I stink like fish :( on: April 27, 2005, 06:18:41 AM
Well, it's 2 systems basically. So I suggest trying to learn one-handed first, and all its moves, and after that dual-wielding. One handed is also a lot more like PoP:SoT.

Dual wielding is more powerful, but not as flexible. But once it clicks you'll be changing and mixing those styles, which is the freeform part of it.

Also remember, special moves like throwing a blade instantly kill an opponent if he looks colorless due to low health.
362  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Jade Empire Character Choice on: April 26, 2005, 09:47:22 AM
just a teensy wee bit off topic:

The game that did the changing-outfits best, was PoP: SoT. At the beginning of the game, you have this flashy young fellow in his nice clothes, and at the end there's this bloodied disillusioned prince, with dirty and torn up clothes.

Also, to stay off topic with the WoW-conversation: I think the way you look is quite important in a MMORPG, just because... well... I'm vain in games I guess smile So it's quite normal for me to choose (bad) equipment in line with my character, rather than uber -yet ugly- equipment... And unfortunately, I think there are quite a lot of ugly clothes/armor pieces/weapons in WoW frown Especially helmets, they're real ugly. (Then again, I'm only lev36, so maybe the nice outfits are not yet available to me)
363  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo Revolution - touchpad controllers? on: April 22, 2005, 11:03:15 AM
I for one love the idea!

What do we have now? 3 identical consoles, with some hardware-differences. They even have games for all 3 consoles for cryin' out loud! I think it's absolutely a smart move to differentiate yourself from this. People could fight over buying an xbox2/ps3 and buy a nintendo that has completely different kind of games! It would divide the market in 2 halves: games like what we're used to, and completely redesigned 'games'.

Come on people, games these days are so boring! Oh, it's an rts, oh it's a racer, oh it's a shooter... blech

Gaming can be reinvented as far as I'm concerned. Nowadays you expect 'features' in a game, and yes, games are great fun, but they're all the same. Why? I don't know, but I'm sure the fact that they all use identical controllers has something to do with it.

And they could make those new controllers in such a way, that they would create a number of 'touchpad-buttons'. So you'd have a touchpad where your left thumb is, a touch pad where your right thumb is etc. so you don't have to look down on the screen, and that your fingers are automatically correctly alligned...

Do I really want just prettier games with better AI? Yes!
But do I also crave for some new fresh ideas in gaming? Yes!!

The 2 could perfectly coexist, and let microsoft and sony fight amongst themselves for their piece of the market.
364  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Sony opens MMO Twink-o-Matic on: April 21, 2005, 01:06:20 PM
I don't think it's that dumb really. Sure, he's a little blunt, but there's truth in what he's saying. Just look at these boards, full of gamers. They're also full of contradictions. (Just look at these WoW-threads smile )

Some serious research goes into the process of making a game, and you can't possibly include everything gamers want. You'd never finish your game! Even including one suggestion made by gamers, which may seem like the perfect solution to a problem, may not be doable due to technical limitations or some such...

I love it when people yell to make the game lag-free! Hey, now there's an idea! I'm sure they haven't thought of that! And what are you gonna do, cancel your subscription because it isn't? Some will, some won't I guess... But you are right, all the negative parts get blown out of proportion on gaming boards, and some healthy discussion is great. But really, don't expect developers to listen too much to gamers... They have smart guys working in their company already. Every skill, every stat... it's all been put through thousands of exel-sheets I'm sure.
365  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Ninja Gaiden Tips? on: April 20, 2005, 06:20:55 AM
I suggest starting over again. You'll have a much easier time through levels 1 to 3, and when you reach the 4th level (again), the game will have 'clicked'. It's what I did, and it worked for me.

I also never used the nunchuks, and disagree about using them against the black ninja's! The nunchuks have very free-form combo's, making for a very aggressive playstyle, which is NOT what's needed versus these ninjas. The sword really is the best all-round weapon.

Some tips against black ninja's:

-Block and counter! (you know how it works? You block, and the moment an enemy hits your sword, and you hear the 'clang' sound, you either hit Y or XX. But you can only try this once every couple of seconds, so you can't spam the Y and X buttons while blocking)

-Wall attacks! It's true what everyone says! Don't just go to a ninja and xxx him, no, attack from the wall, do your combo, and move out!

-Keep moving! Keep blocking, rolling, running op walls, and when you seen an opening, move in. Don't be too agressive.

-An easy combo on the blacks: XY. This will get them almost every time, and depending on your sword level, you can follow up with XXX, XXY or X (and when he falls on the ground, another Y for good measure).
A nice thing about using XY, is that when you keep holding Y down (instead of a quick press), you don't jump in the air. Therefore, when the enemy lands at your feet, just use Y to stab him on the ground.

About the ninpo: Don't worry about it too much. I didn't use it much my first time through, it only really becomes usefull once you get the hang of the fighting system. However, it gets really powerfull near the end, so you might as well try it out in difficult situations (read: the entire game :p ).

Also, when you're done with the game, download the 2 hurricane packs from xbox Live. But be warned, they make the game harder than hard mode in the regular game! I haven't finished them, although I finished NG a couple of times on hard.
366  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Just Finished: Prince of Persia: Warrior Within on: April 19, 2005, 06:06:59 AM
Yes, that battle is frustrating. And yes, there are a couple more like it. But really, the game hasn't even begun yet at that point smile

I used a cheap tactic that took a long time but worked fail-proof. It's something about blocking-blocking-blocking, jump over her, slash twice... or something like that.

And although I have all the comics at home, I didn't like the game. I liked the style a lot, but had to force myself to keep playing it. I was not a fan of the stealth elements in that game...

No no no, indeed I agree there. I'm only saying that perhaps Doom 3 works just as well with a controller, maybe even better (you'd be more scared if you can't aim as well I'd reckon)... But it won't change the entire game no.

The last paragraph in the review is one of the dumbest things I've ever read in a gaming review.

Alright you made me interested enough to go read the last paragraph, and it is one of the most laughably insulting attempts to make people think that the control scheme on the console is somehow more appropriate for this game than PC controls. Whoever wrote that is a jackass.

I actually agree with that paragraph. Bear in mind, I'm an avid 3d shooter fan on pc and on xbox. Xbox games only work well when the controller scheme is perfect. It has to be absolutely spot-on, or a shooter will not work. However, when they've got it right (Halo (2), Brother in Arms), I think it's better than on pc.

You feel your controller rumbling, you ARE actually pulling a trigger, you can't aim as precisely as with a mouse. Some would call that a negative, but I think it's absurd you can double jump, and shoot your rockets into the left eye of your opponent...

Just my opinion off course, but I'm an absolute fan of 3d shooters on console, when they're done right! Wolfenstein or Medal of Honor on xbox , for example, were absolutely horrible because it didn't 'feel' good. It's pretty difficult I think, to implement some sort of aiming assistance without having the player actually notice it too much...

In my opinion, comparing WoW to a pizza with shit on, brings these forums closer to the official WoW-forums. Arguing intelligently about each point mentioned and, most importantly, staying polite (even when shown little respect) does not.

I respect Unbreakable for it, and not you or Blackader. I may not have many posts behind my name, but I've been here since the beginning, and I spent more than a year on the GoneGold-forums. Stop your whining and grow up. You've made your point, albeit you've not made a very good case for it, in my opinion.

Yes, I realise making several characters is not an optimal solution, but it beats not playing the game, no?

Oh, and I may have been wrong about the european severs not being down, apparantly we get 2 days free now, because of some issues when the patch arrived. (Kinda ironic, no?)

Anyway, I wish you all the luck in the world, but I do agree that there's a lot of moaning here. Yes, you pay for it, yes, you want to play the game... But now can I moan because I had to wait about 3 months before the game got available in Belgium? Didn't hear anyone then...

But to be fair, that's a different story. I really hope they'll solve the -apparently - large problems the us servers have!
375  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Happy Patch Day! [WoW] on: March 30, 2005, 06:02:30 AM
I play on Earthen Ring, a european RP server. It's low population, and it has NEVER been down. Actually, I haven't heard of a single european server to be down, but then, I could be mistaken.

Can't you create characters on different servers if it bugs you so much?
376  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Yikes, too many games again! (in Europe) on: March 24, 2005, 09:03:33 AM
Well, games are often released a bit slower here... So now, I have to choose between:
-Resident Evil 4 (havent played one of these yet, but it has just gotten overwhelming ratings on these boards!)
-Kotor 2 (as a fan of the original, and of anything Star Wars, I can't leave this one out...)
-Brothers in Arms: the game I am looking forward to the most. I love realistic (but fun) shooters, as long as they don't evolve into sniping fests.
-Jade Empire: it's Bioware, it looks fresh and original...
-Splinter Cells: CS: Loved the first game, hated the second one. If it's something fresh, I'll be very interested...

And between all that I have to play WoW... It's too much I tell you, too much...

Oh, and one other game that I've only now seen in stores here: D&D Heroes: is it worth it for the coop mode?
377  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Prince of Persia: Warrior Within on: March 11, 2005, 03:48:13 PM
I didn't like it at first, it grew on me, and I couldn't put it down at the end. The combat is a tiny bit more button mashing than NG (which is still supreme king), but it also needs to 'click', and you'll be having a whole lot of fun then!!

It has its faults, but it doesn't deserve the beating it gets...

ANd I actually got really pumped on the music, especially the menu music rocked! ... But then, that is quite subjective apparantly smile

PS Search for the older thread, it had some good insights.

380  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Paper Mario 2 Final boss help? on: February 24, 2005, 07:00:14 PM
Yeah, I'm stuck on the final boss... spoilers obviously btw...

I've got 25 health, 20 flower power, all my teammates maxed out, and got LOTS of badge points (60+).

But now the final boss just deals so much damage, it's ridiculous, and I'm afraid my Mario has too little health to be able to defeat her frown

I've gotten past the part where there's the long cutscene in which all mario's friends wish him luck, and after which you can hurt the demon...

But really, I just die then, and since there's no way to skip all the annoying cutscenes, dying easily costs me half an hour!

So, any tips anyone?

384  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Are Sudeki and Yager good bargain games? on: January 31, 2005, 11:26:03 PM
For Yager, I think it's only available in Europe for one. I had it. (Oops, didn't read it was released recently). I was looking for a nice space-shooter type of game, like Rogue Squadron or something...

And well, the action's pretty good, but the universe is really weird and strange, with humour and a protagonist I totally could not believe in. It does have quite a story, and some variety in its missions. Graphics were good. It's just... well, mediocre I guess.

It does not have a lot of competition, but it doesn't have much going for it either in my opinion. Crimson Skies is waaay better by the way. But it's not a bad game, and maybe you'll end up liking it. It does have quite a bit of exploration and a story, the things you're looking for.

387  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / GBA games on gamecube? on: January 26, 2005, 10:31:09 PM
I'm sure nintendo has some kind of product that lets you play gba games on a gamecube, right?

I do not have a gba, because I don't really need another console. But I'm an old school player, and I love 2D games. Games like Mario, or Castlevania, or gradius-type games, or anything side-scrolling with pretty 2d graphics and jumping in it smile!

But they don't make those games anymore it seems... So now I'm thinking, maybe I can play some gba classics on my gamecube, since they are still 2D...

Good idea? Any game recommendations if this is possible?

Anything nostalgic will be good (I had a nintendo 8bit and 16bit)
388  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / anyone getting Prince of Persia - Warrior Within? on: January 21, 2005, 11:26:54 AM
Finished it this week.

I first read this thread before starting the game, and I got in an equally bad mood as all the posters here, since I also had enjoyed SoT so much. Yes, it was too dark, and the prince was just another-hero-gone-rough.

However, after the first real boss fight, the game did get better. This is where for me the combat clicked, and it's a really fun system. Once you get the hang of it, you can do really cool stuff and start playing with your potential victims as a cat with mice.

And so, around the part with the 2 towers, I was hooked. I couldn't put the game down anymore, I found it almost as addictive as the first game. It's not as subtle, or beautiful, but the story is as good as the first one, and the gameplay mechanics have been improved.

There's also a part in the game where the prince breaks down and has given up, which I found really good. It did make him more human. He does have decent character development, but not enough in the beginning. They should have made another intro, which would show the witty prince of SoT we all love, slowly transforming into the Warrior Within he is now. (Besides, the intro there is now doesn't make any sense at all if you think about it).

So, in conclusion, it's a very good game. BUT, it has a very slow start, and the change between the 2 games is too big. After a while, you'll have adapted, but it's tough at first if you liked SoT a lot. It's not as good as SoT, because thinking back, I remember as many scenes from the first game (which I played a year ago), as I do from this game, but in it's own right, it's good. And it DOES have a certain PoP-atmosphere. The second game in the series, The Shadow and the Flame, was a bit like this one.

391  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap - reivewers are stupid on: January 09, 2005, 09:48:01 AM
I haven't played many Zeldas. I tried a little bit of zelda 1 & 2, a bit of Ocarina of Time, and I finished A link to the Past and The Wind Waker.

Saying that, The Wind Waker was VERY familiar to A link to the past. Sequence:
1) You leave your house to rescue someone: first dungeon.
2) After the rescue, world opens up to you. Now there are a couple of dungeons, where you acquire artifacts.
3) These artifacts allow you to acces another dungeon, and face the Evil Mastermind. But first you get the Master Sword.
4) After facing him, you lose (sort of), and many more dungeons open up to you, to gather artifacts.
5) These artifacts, in turn, allow you to acces the final dungeon, and kill the bad guy.

I liked both games a lot, but they were almost identical in set-up. Also, all the same items came back. Surely some new creativity can't harm the series?

395  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Finished Halo 2? Discuss here. *SPOILER WARNING!* on: November 22, 2004, 10:41:12 AM
Finished it on medium, had a good time overall.

Points of criticism:

*Some of those later levels, especially the covenant city, were pretty bad. I'd much rather fight in human cities, jungles, or outdoor areas than those cramped and dark corridors. I didn't even look like a covenant city...

*The story at first, but now that I understand it, I like it a lot. Still, they shouldn't have advertised it as a Covenant-invades-Earth scenario, that's just a lie. That's like saying the second Matrix Movie is about defending Zion...

*The lack of human ammo, mentioned in that other post. I love the battle rifle, but it can only hold 108 bullets. Not much...

*No Brutes and Elite fighting next each other, I think they would have complemented each other perfectly... Oh, and not enough Drone-fights (those flying bugs). I loved those guys! I also expected Prophets to be part of battle groups, coordinating Elites, and giving passive bonuses or something... Guess not...

*edit: and what about that E3-level they showed? It looked kick-ass! But yes, I've read they scrapped that...

But despite all these points, it's a really really good game! I'm now playing through on Heroic, and I like it a lot more now. Medium was just too easy. Oh, and I've tried Legendary a couple of times, but I can't get past some of the first fights smile I really don't know how I'm going to tackle that one! Cooperative probably...

If anybody has any hints about solo-ing Legendary, let me know!

But seriously I have no idea...I dont really know of any country who pays off thier defecit or loans.

If countries want to be able to join the european union, they need to have a plan that shows they're paying off their debt, instead of building it up. There are all kinds of economic conditions a country has to fulfill, and these are taken quite seriously.

Take my country for example, Belgium. It's a small country, with a huge debt, that was created in the 70's. But since the 90's we're steadily paying it off. It doesn't help off course to have a 'new' government that uses up all the money the previous one saved up (yeah, lower taxes, free bonuses and other stupid shit that costs a lot of money!), but hey, that's politics...

I hope they make legendary a bit more difficult in Halo2, since I'm now very good at the single-player part of the game... I still want to die a lot on medium the first time I go through the game.

I have both as well.

I bought my gamecube last christmas, and I haven't touched it in half a year.

There just aren't a lot of games for it! Yeah, I got it for Zelda as well, Rogue Squadron II, Mario Kart and Viewtiful Joe. All of them are great titles, but once you've played the classics for the game, there's not much you can do with a gamecube.

A console is only as good as its games, and there are just too few games for it. So, buy it as a secondary console for little money I'd say.
