281  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Serious flightsimming: f4: af and il-2 on: October 26, 2008, 09:27:50 AM
About a month ago I grew tired of the 'same old, same old'-games... I tried Mass Effect, got bored. I tried Stalker, got frustrated. I tried Crysis again (after loving it the 1st time), got bored. Dawn of War? Same thing.

So, I thought, time to try my hand again at one of my old, but forgotten, gaming loves: flight sims! The first pc game I loved, was flight simulator 4. In the years thereafter, I played some Dynamix titles (Red Baron, Aces over Europe, Red Baron II), some Origin ones (Strike Commander!), and then suddenly... nothing.

So a month ago I installed Il-2 sturmovik 1946 again, but found out I couldn't even get airborne from a carrier deck, because of the need of rudder control. So, on impulse, I bought myself a Saitek X52 pro HOTAS-joystick, and some rudders along with it. And also a little title called Falcon 4: Allied Force.
So, suddenly a plane doesn't get up in the air simply by pressing the 'ignition'-button, but you have to go through a process of approx. 25 buttons, just to get some life in your jet fighter. And I love it! smile

But, I'd also like some advice from flightsim-enthousiasts on some of the following points:
1) Rudders: They're much 'heavier' than I'd think. Because of this, my chair keeps rolling back when I shift my weight on them. It's really a stupid question, but EVERY desk chair has wheels, so how do you guys fix this? I mean, a regular chair isn't really suited for gaming...
2) Any mods for f4:af that I have to get?
3) Any helpful reads or websites on these games? I've found some, but I'd like your opinion on them.
4) Some newbie hints that would make life easier? What tutorial missions are really important? Is there a 'training' program that's more likely to improve me?

And lastly, how are the microsoft flight simulator games these days? Are they actually any fun? I can't imagine it being much fun without actually having a 'mission' to fly, really...?

I'm assuming this is first person only? Both Half-Lifes gave me severe motion sickness, and I've sadly had to steer clear pretty much of anything using the engine that isn't third person (I'm embarassed to say i received Portal as an Xmas gift last year and still have yet to open it). There are plenty of FPSs that don't do that to me, I've never quite figured out why it's so bad for me in HL 1/2.

I read about that. It has to do with the viewing-angle. By default, your character sees 'more' on-screen (e.g. he has a 'wider' view) than in other shooters. I believe you can alter this in the console, and this should fix the nausea. That could help you I think.
283  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Suggestions for Diablo 2? on: October 09, 2008, 07:12:48 PM
I don't know what paladin is gonna be played. I'm hoping a vengeance/conviction build with plenty of holy shield. That was my first idea, that the conviction aura would make the sorceress a true death-dealing machine, and would also make the elemental druid's somewhat weak spells a lot more powerful.

However, this would not really help the necro all that much I think. Perhaps concentration or fanaticism would be better suited for skeletons...

I'm still not convinced the actual playing style of a necro will suit me. And with bosses, there usually aren't many corpses to go around making skellies from...
284  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Suggestions for Diablo 2? on: October 09, 2008, 03:19:07 PM
I never really liked the necromancer, but maybe this is the time to try it out. I disliked him in single player because of his slowness, the need for fresh corpses, and no real effective damage... Then again, it'll (hopefully) be my last playthrough of the game, so I should give him a fair chance smile

Are skeletons viable in nightmare? Aren't they sort of outclassed at the end of act 1? And wasn't corpse explosion incredibly nerfed in the last patch?
Also, what stat points are the most important? I'm guessing 1 point str, 1 point dex, 1 or 2 vitality, 1 or 2 intelligence...
285  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Suggestions for Diablo 2? on: October 09, 2008, 10:29:28 AM
Hey all, in a couple of weeks I'll be having a whole Diablo 2-weekend, as a friend's sort-of bachelor party. We'll be with 4, and the idea is to at least finish nightmare.

Now, I think there will be 1 sorceress, 1 werewolf-druid, and 1 paladin. That leaves 1 slot open.
I thought a paladin with the aura that lowers enemy resistances would be a great combo with the sorceress and an elemental druid, but I don't know if the guy who's playing the paladin thinks the same way, and the druid is taking the melee-path.

Any ideas which character I should play? I like paladins and elemental druids the most, but I don't want to fight over the same items with the other paladin/druid.
Still, I think an elemental druid is different enough than a werewolf-druid, and I just really like them :-)

But I'm open for suggestions. What would be the ideal 4-man party?
286  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: STALKER Clear Skies DX10 tech demo video on: September 29, 2008, 10:18:37 AM
I like it, sort of, but I'm also immensely frustrated by some things:

Weird decisions:
1) to have 2 duck buttons, one which actually requires you to push the other one. Oh, and the first duck sucks, it doesn't go low enough to hide behind the most common cover.
2) I get hit when I'm hiding behind a tree. Can they see me? Can they shoot through trees? This game is set in a forested map, trees will be your main cover, why don't they work 100% ?
3) rediculous accuracy. My gun accuracy sucks, but the enemy can shoot me from pretty far, in the dark, when I'm in a bush (or behind a tree, see nr 2).
4) bleeding to death. I'm in a firefight, off course I'm gonna get hit. Do I really need to apply a bandage every 2 seconds?
5) Invisible radioactive death. I like the idea, but your geiger should go off a bit quicker, and more accurately. See Terminator: Future Shock, which did this better 15 years ago.
6) Enemy health. My comrades are keeping the military busy, I run around them and blast them in the back with my shotgun. They turn around and kill me, because I'm stuck reloading my 2 measly bullets.
7) Sprint. You press it once, but the moment you stop running, or strafe a bit, you stop sprinting? Or something? I don't get it.
8 ) A lot of keyboard presses: A typical encounter seems to have me pressing: duck, duck lower, peer left, shoot twice, apply bandage, reload after 2 shots.
EDIT (I forgot one!) 9) There's no incentive to go around looking around for nice stuff, because unless you first bought information from other stalkers, every container you find is gonna be empty!

This sounds pretty negative I guess, but I never played the first one, and this game just seems filled with odd decisions, that first-person shooters have solved years ago. It just doesn't 'flow' well. Every encounter is based on a lot of luck, bandages, and a hell of a lot of keyboard presses. It just feels like work I guess. It should be more fun.

Figured out my problem by reading the forums. I had to drop the audio hardware acceleration down one notch and then it works fine. It appears there's a problem with EAX on some computers that is making it crash. Maybe I'll try reinstalling the sound card drivers later or something.

Same here, it seems to be quite common.
288  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Crysis Warhead on: September 18, 2008, 03:30:38 PM
Not meant as a criticism, but I don't remember the AI to be pathetic. They can find their way to you without any problems, can react to destructible environments, charge you or stay put, toss grenades... I don't really see a flaw there?

The problem I saw was that the player was a bit too powerfull, especially the cloaking ability. But I don't think that detracted from the game much.
289  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Crysis Warhead on: September 16, 2008, 10:58:39 AM
I sure am looking forward to it. I never really understood the bad reviews Crysis was getting... I thought it was a beautiful game, and it was extremely fun to hunt those Korean soldiers... I think it plays a lot like Halo actually, but then aimed for pc's... (The importance of grenades, recharging health, melee attacks, and the inclusion of vehicles are very alike to Halo).

All right, the aliens weren't much fun, but by then the game was almost over.
290  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Thoughts about The Elder Scrolls games on: September 16, 2008, 10:54:30 AM
I've thought this too.
I think Daggerfall's atmosphere is vastly superior... Especially the music adds tremendously to the game. I mean, the opening music of both Morrowind and Oblivion is really awesome, but it's the 'filler' music (crawling through a dungeon, riding through snow-covered forests) that's much better in Daggerfall I feel.

Maybe the atmosphere is better, because like a book, you sort of have to make bits up for yourself. In Oblivion, every character has a detailed face, its own voice, etc. You don't need your imagination anymore.

But I don't know really, it's a good question...

(I just played it cooperatively on xbox, which was fun, but not as good as Halo... However I had 2 very small tv's, and there was beer involved, so that might have influenced it a little bit.

That is indeed what I was trying to emphasize smile Mind you, I liked the game a lot, and did finish it, but it saddens me to see that titan quest could have been amazing, yet as it is, it was only 'good'. So, to summarize, more variety in enemies, better (and visually more distinctive) loot, and faster combat would have improved this game tenfold.

And that's the really odd thing. Why can't a developer get right, what an 8-year old game can do?

DS was fun to play (never played 2), and TQ is soulless and clichéd. The forum effect flung me into that one and I hate you all for it. Tongue

Same here... The skills are great, the graphics are outstanding, but the actual combat-gameplay is lacking. There are only small groups of enemies, they die in a very generic kind-of-way, and there's nothing to spice it up. Really, how many cat people and goatmen can you kill? At least Diablo offered a great variety of encounters, often offering quite a lot of tactics as well. And it's slower, and I never found good stuff. Great idea to make ALL the armours look exactly the same, except for the unique ones you never find  icon_confused

I think that one's the hardest Big Daddy fight. Or at least I remember thinking how hard this was, but after that one, I pretty much got through the game ok. So I'd actually advice you to ramp the difficulty back up again after this part, since the game isn't that difficult, if you don't hamster your stuff too much. (Because you'll find plenty of items and ammo, so use them!)

I'm playing a conqueror myself (only level23), and I have a question about stances. Do you guys use them? Is there any point to them when you're solo-ing? In a group I can understand it lets you determine your role better (eg. one guy has defensive stance, the other one has frenzy), but in solo-ing, the 'general' stance seems to give the best combination of defense and offense.

Do you guys find them helpfull? Do you switch a lot?

Freeriders sound fine, but you can also come up with great names by combining stuff like Wolves', Bears', Lion's, Rat's  with Claw, Heart, Eye, Den... Or something (like The Wolves' Claw). Somewhat akin to the Red Hand which guards Tortage actually.

But you'll be leader, so you pick it smile Freeriders is perhaps a bit more mercenary.

Well, now that the serverlist is out, it's pretty obvious where I'd have to roll a character to play RP-PvP:

So expect an assassin played by yours truly in that general area  ninja2

I played my first character to level 10 on that server (because I didn't know at first that pvp was allowed on Aquilonia), and I deleted him this morning, after being killed over and over again. I thought it would make the game more exciting, and to a point it does, but the tedium of being killed by some dumbass who's a couple of levels above yours is not worth the extra excitement.

Also, it should be an RP-server, and I got tired of seeing the constant discussion on the open net about how killing everyone on sight IS roleplaying, since you'd be roleplaying a psychotic maniac.

So no thanks.

I started again this morning on Hyrkania though, so if I can join this guild, that'd be nice. I'm a very casual player though (not min/max-ing, not on-line that often I think), so I don't know if I'll be much of an addition to the guild, if you're looking for some kind of 'powerplay'. I'd rather just get help with quests I'm stuck at, and provide it for others.

So, if I can join, name is 'Adrastos' (According to this site , "he who stands his ground" smile ), and I'm a Conqueror.

Yeah, GR:AW, Halo 3... Their maps can feature a sunny outdoors area, but if you step into the shade, it's suddenly too dark to properly see things... And it's true, only since a year or so have I been turning up the gamma.

But Half-Life 2 (not the episodes) also had this problem. I remember the level on the rooftops where you're fighting the striders, and I had my flashlight on the entire level, although the level was set during a clear day.

Strange, I felt a little underwhelmed. I don't really know why, but I never really felt the adrenaline pumping. I think I would actually like it more on xbox. This is the first call of duty game I've played on the pc, and pixel-perfect aiming actually seemed to deteriorate the whole chaotic-firefight-vibe I felt in Call of Duty 2. Also, I think the effect of a rumbling controller, and actually having to pull a trigger adds enormously to the feeling of being in combat.

Also, at times it felt a bit too much like a barrel shoot. I mean, you zoom in, blam blam, enemy dead, zoom out, scan for next guy, zoom in, etc. There was not a lot of running around frantically, evading grenades, ducking behind cover...

I sure hope there'll be a demo for xbox, to see if I can feel the 'vibe' there smile

So for all you Halo vets... How do you beat the Brute chieftain on level 2? After you clear the hangar, you're headed for the barracks, and there's a corridor which is packed with brutes. I can handle the brutes, but I just cannot kill that chieftain! Is there an easy way to kill him? Can his hammer attack be dodged?

By the way, I'm playing on heroic. I finished on normal, and the ramp up in difficulty is pretty big I think.
when you're in the hangar just prior to that room, pick up one of the machine gun turrets and take it with you to the barracks. drop the minigun and use your smaller weapons to take out most of the brutes, then pick the big gun back up and lay into the chieftan...easiest way i've found so far icon_cool

the first time i made it past that room, i got pretty lucky...stuck him with a couple grenades as i backed up the stairs, jumped over him when he swung the hammer, and whacked him in the back of the head with the butt of my gun.  you can avoid the hammer, but it takes pretty good timing.  killing him just requires a lot of ammo or precise headshots.

Yeah, I got past him now, by using the turret on them, and being a lot more agressive. Last time I just tried to hold out, but if you actually take the fight to them, you can suppress them nicely. Grenading him and concentrating on head shots took care of the guy... But he was one hell of a hard-ass!

In the demo, the AI uses a lot of nod suicide bombers against my mammoths, and they work fabulously. So much so, that I like to put my mammoths behind some apc's and zone troopers to take out those guys.

I just don't have the time for a game like SupCom (based on impressions here and a bit of demo-playtime).
However, every spare moment I have now I load up the C&C-demo. I must have played it for 20 hours now or something like that, so even if I buy it and never play it I'll still feel I got my money out of it smile

It's just so relentless! It's the first time I play an rts where there's not one slow moment of waiting. During my 25min skirmishes, I never stop clicking and zooming around the map. You're constantly doing stuff, waiting at the most 5 - 10 seconds for a harvester to return to base.

I also like how the enemy AI keeps attacking, so after 2 minutes of starting a skirmish, you're basically fighting for the rest of the match.

I do agree that I would like to watch the fights a bit more, especially all the nice terrain destruction, but I guess that would slow the pace down too much.

Last game I attacked with mammoths, predators and bulldogs, dropped in zone troopers behind enemy lines, used the ion cannon on a couple of power generators, and flew in my bombers. That is command and conquer at its best biggrin
312  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: C&C3 Demo Today on: March 17, 2007, 04:36:17 PM
Well, I seem to be making progress against a medium enemy. I've been using the handicap-function to slowly beef them up, and it works quite well. I don't know what exactly the handicap does, though.

Anyway, what seems to be working is this:
I immediately build 2 mobile command posts at the tiberium spikes, and build strong forward defenses at those points.
As soon as I can, I make an extra harvester, and an extra MCV.
The mcv goes to deploy himself near a second tiberium field, and builds a tiberium plant and war factory.

At this point, I usually need to fight off Nod at the second base, but tanks coupled with stationary defences do the trick.
My 2 war factories are pumping out batches of 3 predator tanks and 3 apc's. I place these batches near my 3 choke points: the 2 tiberium spikes, and my second base.
Having 2 working bases, I stabilise my tiberium income, by building extra harvesters or plants. My income will go up drastically now, which starts the second phase of my plan: tech up!

I build a tech center and armory. The tech center lets me deploy the pretty good EMP cannon, of which I immediately place some. I start replacing my predator/apc-combo with upgraded mammoth tanks/zone troopers.

The third part begins: build airports with bombers, build an ion-cannon and start dropping zone trooper-pods into the enemy base to disrupt him from within.
After I've build a couple of mammoths and zone troopers, I move in from the 2 sides, avoiding all the rocket infantry holed up in the middle.

This tactic seems to work. I just needed to play this game infinitely more agressive than I'm used to. But I like it now, matches last half an hour at most, and the explosions are immensely gratifying. What more can you look for in a c&c? smile
313  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: C&C3 Demo Today on: March 16, 2007, 09:15:55 AM
I like the demo a lot, but I can't seem to beat the AI on medium difficulty   icon_neutral

If I turtle, and build strong defences (however, they're not that strong), I run out of tiberium quickly.

If I make a move for a second tiberium field, Nod constantly fights me for it, and I get sidetracked, at which time my main base gets attacked.

If I want to protect those tiberium spikes (which you have to capture with an engineer), I need to build strong defences there, rendering the profit from those spikes rather useless...

And I keep losing my damn harvesters!

Any tips?
