The battles are sort of odd, and I don't know if im missing something, but I have yet to figure out how to select who I want to attack first, but I'll just have to check the manual for that.

My understanding from the reviews is that you can't select enemies to attack.  This and the losing-HP-while-running thing sealed the 'No Buy' for me.

Just the inability to select targets made this a no-buy for me.  I totally don't mind losing HP while running around at all.  I was all set for this one, until I found out you can't select targets.  How boring combat must be.
8082  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / DS - Does any game need the dual screen? on: October 07, 2005, 01:16:17 PM

Thanks for the heads-up.  It has been awhile since I read about it.  I am then assuming capturing souls is the same as it was in Aria of Sorrow (getting all the souls in that game took forever!).

Perhaps my initial impressions of the upgrades and whether it was originally started as a GBA title are a bit off due to the fact it is a direct sequel to Aria of Sorrow (unless that changed too!).

I need this game!

All the real Castlevania fans have a DS and are playing it right now. slywink
8083  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / DS Conference [it's final, DS > PSP] on: October 06, 2005, 01:25:39 PM
I don't think it because of Nintendo's wi-fi announcement, but, since I won both and can say for certain, the DS is indeed greater than the PSP.  I love them both, though.

I have a stack of DS games which say you shouldn't have to try to love your DS.
8085  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / X05 Screenshots UP! on: October 04, 2005, 03:46:05 PM
The problem is that these are from EA and I tend not to believe anything they say until I have the product in my hands.  They are the masters of making screenshots make the game look better than it does in reality.
8086  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What the heck are you getting this week? (Week of October 3) on: October 03, 2005, 01:23:52 PM
Castlevania DS.
8087  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lost in Blue on: September 29, 2005, 03:54:01 PM
Here is what I posted at OO:

I love the game. I played it for a couple of hours last night and I know I love a game when I have to force myself to go to bed because I want to just play one more day. Now, I know this game is not for everyone. THis is for the types of people that think Harvest Moon is good fun. I loved Harvest Moon Friends of Mineral town on teh GBA, for instance and I have really been enjoying this game. I got to a part of the game where I have fleshed out my cave a little more and I am starting to see how the game can open up and offer more.

The beginning can be tough. In fact, I died the first day because I couldn't find any bark to make my fire generating tool. It can be a very big challenge to get you levels of water, food, and energy up. Especially when your tools break and you don't have a lot of energy to go out and look for more items to rebuild it. However, I think this stuff is great and you really feel like you are trying to survive on this island.

The reviews haven't been that great, tending to be mid-7s, but I really think this type of game has to be your thing in order to enjoy it. So, I think if you like Harvest Moon, you can bump the score up some.
8088  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What are you buying this week? (9/26) on: September 27, 2005, 02:56:05 PM
I had been debating on possibly getting Lunar and definitely getting Lost in Blue.  However, after reading some initial Lunar reviews, I think I won't be touching that one with a ten foot pole.  If I were rich, I would pick up Tiger Woods, Pokemon XD, and Trace Memory.  So, looks like just one title for me this week.

I really hate this time of the year because there are far too many games to possibly be able to buy.

That and the fact that the PSP is lousy with racers

*blink* *blink*

Huh?

Gotten plety of enjoyment out of Ridge Racer here. Wipeput is great too, but it's too hard for me.

When you say something is "lousy with something" it means that there are lots of that something, not that the racers suck on the PSP.  So, I think the fact that there are so many racers on the PSP is what is keeping him from maybe picking up yet another one.

Yeah.  Basically you can come up with any phrase you want to associate with the action the puppy has performed.  FOr instance, you can associate "Chew on your baby, [puppy name]" with the sit action.
8092  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I got me a Nintendo DS! on: August 27, 2005, 11:07:50 PM
Twisted works just fine on the DS.  In fact, if you have both Twisted and TOuched in at the same time, you unlock something in one (or both) of them.  I forget what it was because I did it so long ago.
8093  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendogs voice recognition problems? on: August 27, 2005, 02:07:37 PM
Yeah, I did all that.  It sounds clear on the playback.  For instance, Sit and Shake kept getting confused by the dog.  I finally had to change sit to sit down.  I keep wasting a lot of my training time having to retrain to try to get the dog to stop confusing things.
8094  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendogs voice recognition problems? on: August 27, 2005, 07:36:11 AM
I have a deep voice and keep having problems.  I can't tell if it is supposed to goof up commands sometimes or not.  It seems like I tell it to do one thing and it does something else.  Like I say "Lie Down" and it sticks its paw up to shake.  THose two phrases don't sound anything alike.  Hopefully, it is just simulating that the dog doesn't always get it perfect.  I wish I knew for sure, though.

8097  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Oblivion no longer a launch day title (XBox 360) on: August 22, 2005, 06:35:33 PM
Wow, if you can't make it through a 4-moth launch window, how are you going to stomach it if the PS3 gets delayed until 2007?  Sony did the same launch window thing with the PSP, so Sony is not immune to it.  I am certainly disappointed that I have to wait a little longer for Oblivion, but I think it will be worth it.  Plus, there are some other launch day games I am interested in.  Too many, in fact.

8100  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Metal Gear Acid 2 Screenies [PSP] on: August 18, 2005, 03:26:31 PM
I definitely can't wait for this one.  I loved the first one, though I don't own it anymore because it didn't have much in the way of replay value for me (getting a full set of cards wasn't enough and I didn't really want to go through the story again).  I wish I hadn't saved over my file after I beat it, so I could have just replayed all the replayable missions over and over, but I saved and didn't feel like going through it all again to re-open them.

.

While reading files/music/movies off of the stick is less power consuming than reading it from the UMD drive, that power savings will be countered by the screen always being on. You can adjust the brightness of the screen to get you a bit more time, but there's no way to turn off the screen entirely without shutting down the system.

Sure there is.  Just hold down the brightness button....it will turn the screen off but keep the PSP running.

This works fine on U.S. PSPs?  Actually, let me rephrase that.  Not only will it work, but will it be in English if it does work?

From what I've read, yes, it does work.

However, once you upgrade past 1.50 you're losing out on the ability to play emulation and homebrew programs.

Oh, and if you want a web browser, don't upgrade. Somebody has already ripped out a browser out of another program and made it available to download. And unlike the built in browser (in 2.0), you get Flash support.

I made the mistake of upgrading past 1.5 (before they got homebrew stuff going) long ago, so I have nothing to lose.

Definitely not interested.  Please don't make Metal Gear Acid its own genre.

Exactly what I thought.  I mean, Metal Gear Ac!d was fun when I had it and played it . . . even with some pretty big quirks that I didn't like about it . . . but making the "card-based strategy" type of game into a genre isn't very appealing to me personally.

Looks semi-interesting, but that's it for me.

Phooey to you I say.  I love MGA and am on the final boss battle right now.  I could use more games like MGA.

8111  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / GTA:SA X-Box question on: July 01, 2005, 06:11:16 PM
I have been playing GTA:SA on the XBox after picking iit up recently.  I play on a normal TV (no HD or even S-Video, for that matter).  That being said, I really have a hard time seeing the little radar down in the bottom left or even reading the map which you can pull up.  I have never really ever had a problem like this with a vidoe game before on my TV, but I don't think the games I have played have such tiny fonts and maps.  Even the radio station names can be hard to read when I change channels.  This is all viewed from sitting on the couch.  Does anyone else have any problems viewing text and such with this game on a normal TV?

It is veyr similar to Yoshi, except that it goes above and beyond Yoshi in that there is level progression and bosses and such.  Much more like a platform game than just an arcade game.  Cute doesn't even begin to decribe the game. smile

Wow...this would so rule.  I am sure it is for PS2, though, and I don't have one, which is dumb of me since I love RPGs.  I just kind of got fed up with the load times on the PS2 and dumped it many years ago.  If this isn't coming out in the U.S., someone should steal the idea and do something similar.

Well, Sony is concerned with the legalilty of things.  And running emulated software on your PSP typically isn't thought of as very legal.  To me, it sounds like something they would do.
8120  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Kirby Canvas Impressions on: June 15, 2005, 04:51:26 PM
My impressions based on playing just the first little level last night.  I enjoyed it immensely.  I got all three medals for the first level and pretty much explored that one level completely after finding the balloon ability up in the upper left corner of one of the screens.  It took me a few minutes to get a hang of the controls and I still feel like a little bit of a spaz when trying to do things quickly, but I am definitely getting the hang of it.

I read about two other modes to play the game in that sound like a lot of fun.  One mode has you try to complete the level as fast as you can.  The other mode has you try to complete it using as little ink as possible.  I haven't tried either mode, but they sound like fun.  With all the unlockables there are in the game, including 4 additional characters (one which you can unlock by beating the game with Kirby and the Amazing Mirror inserted into the GBA slot of the DS), plus the mini-games, I think this is going to be very enjoyable and kepe me busy trying to 100% it for some time to come.
