EDIT: WTF is with the Friday releases this week for multiple titles? Tuesday is the launch day for everything in the US. EVERYTHING. Unless you're Nintendo anyhow.

I honestly wish they were all Friday.  Get the game, have the weekend to play.

All I'm saying is that if one variable stays the same (PS4 is hard to find) and one variable changes (XB1 sales increase), then it's fair to say that XB1 sales increased. At any rate, the PS4 isn't hard to find in my area because I bought one at Target 15 minutes ago smile

You don't know that the PS4 stayed the same.  It might have been less supply constrained in January.  The thing is, we just don't know.  Anyway, congrats on joining the "I Have Them Both Club."  It's really the best way to go and keeps the fanboyism to a minimum.

Kind of ridiculous that they do controller firmware upgrades but don't have a great way to notify people.

I got prompted by my XB1 for at least the second update.  I think the USB cable has to be attached for it to realize the controller is out of date.  (but yeah, it's still ridiculous they can't detect your firmware version wirelessly)

Yeah, I mean we are very in tune with the industry and news, but imagine people who wouldn't ever know this was a thing.

How does one update their controller?

You need a USB to micro adapter.  Plug the controller into the XBox (USB port is on the back, unless I just didn't see one on the front and it's there).  Go to Settings and the go to System.  Choose Update Controller in the bottom left controller.  Kind of ridiculous that they do controller firmware upgrades but don't have a great way to notify people.  I had heard it was coming and then forgot about it.  I think some podcast reminded me I could update it.

How "punishing"/hardcore is it compared to the original game?

So far, and I am still early, I think I died twice.  One right at the beginning when I tried punching a rat thing and then a bunch more I didn't see came running.  Then I died another time trying to get a shiny that was too far of a drop.  Other than that, I am doing great, but I just recently beat both Dark Souls and Demons Souls.  My time with Dark Souls made Demons Souls easier and I think that stays true with Dark Souls 2.  If you've got some experience with the game, you know what to look out for.  I will say that combat has felt different and tricks I tried in the other games with melee didn't seem to work as well here.  But, in this game, I went with a magic user to just do something different, so I tend to just soul arrow things.

I'm loving it a whole lot.  Really has grabbed me and in general, I like the changes.  I don't like how you can't see how a weapon or piece of armor from a merchant will raise your stats.  Really dumb thing to not include.  Not like I usually buy that stuff from merchants as I usually rely on drops, but just seems a huge oversight.  The game definitely has that Dark Souls addiction pulling at me.  I went with a magic user this time, which I hadn't done in the previous two games.  Will be interesting to see how things differ.

Oh, one change which I am not so sure about yet as I haven't run into it, but thinking about it, not sure I like is that enemies will only respawn so many times.  So you can't just farm over and over and over.

Did you have bonus xp in your pool?  There are shrines that give +25% until you die and you can keep adding to it with more shrines.  Not sure that gets you up to the level you were talking about, though.

This is a cross post, because I'm wondering if this applies to Xbone yet (and hoping that it will).  Otherwise, it seems a little late in the game, but it's better than nothing.

Phil Spencer: Games with Gold will feel 'more true' to what consumers want in the future

Here's one insteresting tidbit that never occurred to me:

Quote
"One of our issues with Games with Gold — not 'issues,' but differences between the other system we get compared to, is the fact that with Games with Gold, you get to keep that game, regardless of whether you continue to subscribe," Spencer said. "And the business around Games with Gold, for us, is just fundamentally different from some of the other programs that are out there, which does put a different financial picture on a — you're gonna go buy a game that's brand new, the cost of putting that in, just to be kind of blunt about it."

OTOH, while I'm sure it would be a challenge to change the infrastructure to such a degree, I'm not sure why they don't make it so that this is not an issue with GwG.

Still, good to hear that better options will be coming.  Is GwG on Xbone yet?

Gee, MS...thanks for letting me keep those ancient games if I stop subscribing to Live.  I don't even pay attention to what they offer anymore because the games they've offered have just been so old.  I'll not be dropping my PS+ subscription ever, so I never have to worry about losing the games.  Too much value in the subscription.

Really enjoying the new patch.  I've played a ton of it when I haven't played this game in forever.  Trying to get the last piece I need for the Staff of Herding.  Got Chiltara to spawn, but it dropped a legendary instead of the piece I needed. frown  I think I was something like level 55 when I started playing again and am now up to Paragon 20.  I'm just playing on Hard right now to get through the story, get the achievements for killing the bosses (which I guess are new or reset or something, because I already beat the game a couple of times and yet am still getting these achievements).  Then, I think I will try playing on Torment as Hard is super easy.  We'll see if the gear I am getting will help me survive, although I only have 6 legendaries equipped.

I wish this were true, but I pay for a TV service and am given tons of ads.  I pay for a magazine and am given tons of ads.  I used to get all riled up about ads on the 360, but then remembered that they're not the only place that gives me ads when I pay for it.

It did, but I think it's not there any more because it's on by default.  Also if you have energy savings on you can NOT use 'Xbox turn on' because the system actually turns off when you turn it off instead of suspending to await downloads and voice commands.

What settings do you run with in that regard?

It was definitely a beta feature and definitely was shitty. Maybe they think its better with the new update?

I don't believe it changes the Xbox On functionality... I think its specific to game quick starts.

The description for Energy Saving Mode vs. Quick Start says that Quick Start enables update downloads, XBox On, and turning on your TV box.  Maybe someone who has it on Energy Save can comment on whether you can turn it on with voice?

I don't think that was the beta feature... it was something to do with game suspending.

Game suspending is a checkbox you can check or uncheck if you have Instant On enabled.  I could have sworn it said Beta next to it in the past.

When you say Quick Start do you mean the Instant On power feature?  If so, I have that on and haven't had any problems.  But I certainly never enabled any beta game suspend features and can't find anything about that in the Settings now.

I think it used to say Beta next to one of the options, but doesn't anymore.  I just checked the setting I am talking about and it is Energy Savings Mode vs. Instant On.  Having it on Instant On seems to lead to all kinds of issues which I have to resolve by doing a power down.  The things I have had happen:

1) Games crashing when I try to load them, even if I am not resuming them from a previous power-on.
2) Video not displaying.
3) Sound not happening
4) Miscellaneous other minor things.

I went to go turn the feature off and I don't see Beta next to the feature anymore.  Or maybe that was only on the 5.1 passthrough thing and I am misremembering?  Reading about turning it off and it will get rid of the XBox On feature, which I know my family really likes.  I'm torn between having this thing be easy for them to use and having to deal with all the issues that seem to come with it.  Maybe at the very least I will turn the game suspend thing off, but thinking about it, my issue yesterday with Killer Instinct wasn't like I had suspended that game.  I was launching it for the first time in a long time and it crashed when trying to start it multiple times.  Makes me think the Quick Star is the culprit.

Other XBO users...have you guys pretty much turned this feature off or do you use it (Quick Start).  If  you use it, do you have glitches like this?  I doubt it's the hardware as it seems like a very software-based thing.  Especially since a full power down seems to fix any issue I ever run into.

Obviously it's not the same clip but you can't just put it down to "different time of day". One of them looks the way the next gen should look and the other looks like the past gen.

One thing I noticed was that weird glow on the bridge.  I don't think that's a graphics downgrade...I think they're highlighting the bridge.  You can see a tooltip as they drive by labeled Bridge and I think it is showing you can interact with it.
107  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Xbox One Discussion on: March 07, 2014, 02:43:20 PM
I think I am finally going to turn the Quick Start feature off.  I know it's labeled as a beta, but I figured it would get better with each patch.  Instead, it has actually gotten worse.  Since the patch the other day, I have had two or three times where I turn it on and it just gets stuck and never turns on the TV/satellite/audio receiver and even when I manually turn them on, nothing is being displayed.  Have to power it fully down, turn it back on, and it works.  When I hear word that it is no longer a beta, I will turn it back on.  As much as people complained Sony didn't live up to their promise of suspending games across standby, I think they probably couldn't get it working right and instead of slapping it in as a beta, just kept it out until they can make it right.  I've had way too many times of having games crash when I launch them on the XBox and having to power down to get them to actually boot properly.  At least on the PS4, the Standby feature makes the console boot quicker and I have no issues with it.

Yeah the PS3 system was awful...especially since it had to update the entire firmware EVERY time, IIRC.

I'm not talking about the fact that you had to download a huge file and apply it every time.  Both the PS3 and PS4 let you know there's a patch out there and even if it didn't, as soon as they put the patch up, you can ask it to go grab it.  You can't do that on the XBO.  I have to wait for the fates to deem it's time for my box to go grab it.
109  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Xbox One Discussion on: March 05, 2014, 11:29:33 PM
The patching system these guys use is so dumb. It supposedly went up last night, but I have it on Standby and it never downloaded anything.  Major Nelson has this to say:

Quote
How do you get the new update? For the vast majority of Xbox One owners who use “Instant On” (the low power state that allows you to instantly power up your console by saying “Xbox On”), the console automatically checks for updates when customers turn it off. This means that once we’ve made the March update available (late tonight, Pacific Time), the next time you turn your console off it will take the update during off-peak hours in your local time. Ultimately, you’ll see it sometime in the next day or two.

Great, so I have to just wait and hope by box downloads this thing.  Meanwhile, Sony lets me know there's a new patch and you can't get online until you update.  They also have a Check for Update option.  MS really should go this route.

I tried shutting the box down fully this morning and booting back up and it didn't prompt me to update.

Turtle, hope you have some handhelds or something to play while in the hospital.  I can tell you that even as a fit person, I have some regrets as well.  I run and exercise now, but back in the early 2000s, I had gotten up to 325 pounds.  Finally decided to take control of my life and lost weight all the way down to 190.  The problem there is extra skin.  So, I was fit, but wearing a shirt that was a little snug meant you could see all that extra skin.  So, even though I got fit, I still had to live with the product of being that large.  Then, I gained most of the weight back through the late 2000s as I let my work get the best of me.  Got back up to 290.  Then, I said enough is enough and lost it all again.  And that is where I stand.  Obviously still have the skin problem and I'm not the type of person to go get surgeries just for cosmetic things (and hopefully never have a surgery, period).

Anyway, if pills is the worst you have to do (and no matter what, it seems like the price of living into your 70s and beyond is to be on some kind of medication), I think you'll be okay.  Hopefully, when you get out of the hospital, you can turn that regret into something positive and get out there and live that healthy lifestyle you would like to.

I never know if things that happen to me are just normal or the sign of something else.  This past weekend, I had some Chinese food (and way more if it than a man should eat) and all weekend until Sunday, I was so thirsty.  I kept drinking tons of water and my lips always felt dry and couldn't quench my thirst.  Peed a ton, but I drink water as my only drink (oh and OJ in the morning) and if I drink a ton of it, I have to pee a whole ton.  When I went for my regular Sunday 8-mile run, the next day I was very sore, I think from just not having fluids where I needed to be.  All is fine now.  I do get cramps in my left calf from time to time, but I don't get them as often as I used to (maybe once or twice a month now) and I always just chalk it up to the fact that I run a great deal and exercise in some for every day.

It did make me swear off Asian food (which is my favorite) as it seems like lately if I eat a bunch of it, I'm just stupid thirsty the next day.
