Murdered: Soul Suspect on PS4 if the reviews seem positive.

Man, this game just continues to grow on me. I think the biggest mistake they made in the design was opening up the whole world to you from the start. I think it would've been much better if they had eased you into the different side quest types via the story. I think this would have made you more attached to your character, and given you less distractions in the early part of the game.

I disagree on this.  Saints Row 3 did that and while I like the game in general, I didn't like that the story drug you through all the side stuff.

The difference seems to be in how innovative/fun it is for a next-gen game. Some people think it's game of the year levels of fun, others (like me) think it's fun but nothing we haven't really seen before. I think this perception may depend on a lot of factors - how hyped you were, what other open world games you've played, E3 perception vs reality, etc.

I guess I question why the reviewer should measure this game up to some imaginary "next-gen" standard it needs to live up to.  If anyone thought games right off the bat (especially cross-gen ones) were going to be some massive leap from the previous generation, they were deluding themselves.  It should be measured on the quality and entertainment of the game itself, not some imaginary perception of what the game should be.

I still continue to have tons of fun in it and, keep in mind I am a huge AC fan, I think it blows AC out of the water for fun things to do outside the main mission structure.

Does the game recognize if you ghost through a segment? It seems that the guards around most hacking locations are apparently marked for death and okay to kill for your reputation.

No, it didn't given me a trophy or say anything about ghosting through it.  It's more a personal choice in that I don't want to play Aiden as a killer.  I've only killed one person so far and it was one of those random robber events and the guy had a gun and was shooting me, so the only real way I could get him was to shoot back or he would have killed me before I reached him.  I am sure eventually I will start gunning everyone down as the game will probably force my hand that way.

I would have liked a little more hand holding before they drop you into a massive world with hundreds of objectives all over the place.  Even some of the beginning missions require you to drive quite a bit, which seems like a departure from other open world games that I've played, where you lead up to the "next island".  Also, I thought the idea was to try and be really stealthy and hack your way to victory, but it seems that most missions require that you shoot your way success.

I've only done the first story mission that requires you to hack something, but I was able to sneak in undetected, get the hacking done, and get out without alerting anyone.  I imagine they're not all like that, though.  I felt pretty awesome when I did it. smile

I'm not surprised to see people feeling this way, I wouldn't expect truly next gen stuff until about a year after a system comes out.  I'm hoping/expecting that Destiny, Evolve and the like showcase some stuff that the 360/ps3 simply couldn't do well.

Exactly.  It's only goiing to be with games that were made only for new-gen that things will look good.  Infamous looks wonderful, for instance.  I imagine the new Batman will look stellar as well (and from the screens they have posted of it, it seems to).

You should fire up the PS3 version so that you will see that it doesn't look as good.

Even though I feel its story is often weak and its action isn't that different from other games in the genre, I still enjoyed my time with Watch Dogs. It turns out that the old stuff still works, and the strong-but-standard mission design kept me entertained, most of the time. It's rough around the edges, though, so if you don't settle for anything less than the best, you'll probably be disappointed.

But hey, Watch Dogs 2? That'll probably be pretty cool.

Looks like I'll be waiting.

I figured if Jeff reviewed it, he would give it a 3.  He's so odd.  He won't blink at the bog-standard missions that GTA 5 gives because it's GTA, but for this, which actually does some interesting things with the hacking and such, suddenly it's the same old same old.  I understand his love for Saint's Row as that is one wacky ass game.

The randomness of losing functions makes you spread out your attack choices.

I don't believe it's random.  I think you lose the primary that uses up the most memory.  I beat the game yesterday myself and really loved it.  I might even do a Recursion one day, but mostly I wanted to get it cleared out before Watch Dogs.  I bought the soundtrack off of iTunes as I really like Darren Korb's stuff (loved Bastion as well and own that soundtrack).

Im terrible with the names of the functions but my favorite combo was the bounce shot augmented with the corruption and the starting ability.  It meant that my shots bounced to all targets, caused them to slowly decay and also stun locked them.  I combined it with cloak as a passive, which meant every time an enemy died I went invisible.  Most fights I could fire off a few shots and then just run away.  Not the most honorable tactic but really effective.

Yeah, this is the cool thing I really like about this game.  Messing with combos to come up with interesting was to fight.

I will, however, state that from screenshots/videos I've seen across a wide variety of games, the PS titles (particularly the darker scenes) tend to look a little more muted and washed out. That's all I was trying to say. I wasn't trying to start a console war or push anyone's buttons. This perception is probably due to the crushed blacks or whatever, but again, it's just personal opinion. It doesn't stop me from buying PS games or enjoying PS games, and I understand that on a technical level that the PS color is more accurate.

If you like the way that looks, why not adjust the TV settings on your PS4 input to achieve the same thing?  Most modern sets store individual settings for each input.  Just notch the Brightness a little bit down, the Color or Vividness a little bit up, and you'll have the visuals you prefer without giving up a chunk of performance.  Everybody wins!

Yeah, I think if you just set the PS4 to Limited Range, you can accomplish the same thing.

The new Murky hero is made of ultra-fragile glass.  I guess you need to liberally use his egg to come back since he dies so easy.

I was at the PAX reveal of that character and it is intended to be fragile, but since he spawns so easily, you just keep coming back.  The way they phrased it was that if you can fight a round with Murky and not take damage, that is a victory.  Otherwise, he will just keep chipping away at you.

Has anyone tried using a USB flash drive with the Wii U for extra storage?  I know Nintendo doesn't recommend it, but I would just be using it to store game downloads.  Since the "8 GB" model is actually 3 GB, I don't have enough room to download the free game that comes with Mario Kart 8.

Nintendo actually has a few hard drives they officially recommend.  I just bought a 1TB drive from Amazon that is not externally powered, but you have to buy a USB Y cable so that you can pull power from one and connect with the other.  I'll be getting it Thursday, but I saw others use this particular drive with the Y cable and they say it works.  I've gone completely digital with games and Wii U was the last console that I didn't.  I went to go buy Donkey Kong and didn't have the space, so bought the disc, but since Mario Kart is coming out, I decided to go ahead and buy the drive.

Alright, got the drive and Y cable in and it works great.  It obviously uses up both USB ports in the back, so if they ever actually came out with something that needed one of those ports in the back, I'd either be SOL or maybe maybe would have to get another  USB splitter or something.  I copied over Mario 3D World and loaded it up and it worked like a charm.  Here's what I ordered:

Y Cable
1TB Hard Drive

Sadly, the Wii U probably won't live long enough for me to ever come close to filling this drive.

Edit to be sure to make it clear that I went with this particular drive solution because it doesn't require external power.  I have so many things plugged into the outlets by where my TV is that I didn't want one that needed me to plug in an AC adapter.

What does the PS4 controller speaker do in this game?  Ben Kuchera mentioned it was a great part of the experience, but I'm on the PC version so I don't know what I'm missing.

Also, don't overlook that you can use the bumper buttons to do a neat flourish or hum along to the music.

I turned it on last night (it is off by default) and it just has the voice of the sword come through the controller to match the flashing of the light bar.  I think I'll leave it on the controller as I like the effect.

Yeah, one of the reasons I never play MOBAs is the store.  It seems like there's a set of items for a character that everyone buys in things like DOTA and LoL, which makes the mechanic boil down to buying those items, which makes you wonder why they even have it in the first place.  I also like the idea of shared xp.  Sure I think this game will not be as complex (maybe MOBAs for Babies), but since this is a genre I wish I played but don't have the time to invest, I'd like something a little easier for me to be able to get that experience.

They've not sold 5.6 million to customers.  They've shipped that many to retailers.  MS really did a great job confusing  people with that 5M number they put out there when Sony announced selling 7M to actual customers.

There has been this perception due to its performance compared to the XB1 that it is some kind of miracle machine that gives developers unlimited ability to let their imaginations run wild.

Nobody thinks this (that is rational, anyway).  It just performs better than the XBO.  An open world game like Watch Dogs is going to tax the system.  Infamous benefits because it was only made for one platform.  AC4 is multiplatform and somewhat open world, but the scope is not as large when you're in a city.  From what I have seen of Watch Dogs, it's got traffic, lots of different buildings, etc. and is multiplatform (including last-gen) so it's just not going to run as well as Infamous.

I guess the real question is what kind of settings ccan you run these games at on PC while building a PC that costs $400?  Sure, dual graphics cards are going to get you insane graphics (and you can build a 4K system right now), but it isn't cheap.  I think before, what you got in a console was better than even the high end PCs, but now the high end ones beat it.
112  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Xbox One Discussion on: May 14, 2014, 01:06:27 AM
Yeah, that's the thing.  They've had two shots at it now and it just hasn't gone well.  I think I would be fine if they figured out a way to maybe build it into the console footprint itself and limit it to voice recognition.  It's sad that the PS4 recognizes me instantly with their PS4 little camera and I have to often tell the XBO it didn't recognize me.  Voice recognition and the system itself has gotten better for sure with the patches (when I first brought it home, the system was riddled with issues where I basically had to hard reboot it every day).  With the patches, it's been a few weeks since I've had to hard reboot the thing and, in general, voice recognition seems to work better, though I wish it would lower the volume of the system when I say "XBox" so that it could then hear the rest of what I am saying.  Trying to talk when people are a room over talking loudly or even during commercials rarely works.

But, my worry here is now that they will sell this Kinectless SKU, that they won't continue to work on the voice, which I do think the best thing about Kinect is (and something you don't actually need the camera for).

Now that I'm old and have disposable income, companies are putting out 2D pixel art side scrollers.

I just can't get excited about (most) indie games. I didn't claw my way to the top of the console food chain and spend hundreds of dollars to play crap that can run on my phone.

When I see these long lists of upcoming games for PS4, I go, "Haha, yeah that's funny. Now show me the REAL games."

I've usually just used equipment I find rather than buy it, so I vote for stats, but I could totally be wrong.
