7761  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I now officially don't understand Fanboisim on: March 30, 2006, 06:16:40 PM
I have all the consoles and don't suffer form fanboyism.  Sure, I like Nintendo over all others and I defend them because I think they need it, but I don't put down the competitors.  With all these great gaming systems out there, I count myself lucky that I can enjoy them all and not have to side with one.
7762  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / The best new game that nobody here is talking about.... on: March 30, 2006, 06:14:29 PM
I've been playing Syphon Filter as well and think it is a great game.  The fact that I can play an FPS of this quality on the PSP just makes me smile (just as playing Metroid on my DS does).  I have been playing Daxter more, but that is because I love me some platformers.  When I get through Daxter, Syphon Filter will get more playtime, but I already know it is a great game.

Coupled this with the usually slow loading times of the PSP

PSP games are getting much better about this.  Daxter barely loads at all, for instance.  I think that just like with the PS2, developers are coming up with ways to decrease these times.

I guess I'm the only person who feels that the scalng is great and will give me a challenge no matter what level I am.  I have no desire to be uber-man walking around while wolves and bandits attack me like little gnats.  I have about 30 hours in teh game and am level 9 and just love the game.  I think about it when I'm at work or away from the house, which makes it a very rare game.  If I die or get my ass kicked, I reload and try to figure out a new way to approach the mob.  I will not touch the slider, but instead just try new tactics.

Yes, but a handheld system can get away with sub-par graphics at this stage. In a home setting though, where more and more people have HDTV's, people are not going to want to play on a system that looks bad. The Revolution will not do any kind of HD. It will not have as much memory as a Xbox 1 and be clocked slower. Nintendo just doesn't have the kind of clout they used to have, thanks to the poor showing of the Gamecube. They are in very big danger of being steamrolled by MS and Sony and I don't think a gadget remote control is going to save them....especially if all the games look like crap compared to games on the PS3/Xbox 360.

I mean, if people didn't care about graphics, we would all still be playing on our PS1's and N64's.

People will make the jump from Gamecube to Revolution. Why? Maybe the graphics. We as hard core gamers have to realize that not everyone is like us. Sure, some non-gamers will be pulled to the graphics. However, others will be attracted by a price tag a couple hundred dollars less than the competition. I have a 360, but I will be getting a Revolution day 1 and it isn't because of the graphics (I have my 360 for that). It will be because of the controller potential, because of the virtual console, because Nintendo knows what makes games fun. Sure, I love Oblivion because of its depth and ability for me to do almost anything in the game, but I am not always looking for that depth. Sometimes I just want to play a fun game with my family. Nintendo is perfect for that.

I think you are sounding the death horn a little bit prematurely.

I felt really bad for the guy in the Paranoia quest series.  Nice when a game makes you care about the characters.

Spoiler for Hiden:
I assume you followed the 3 people around and reported that none of them are in conspiracy... I went through his house and he has notes on a table in the basement based on your encounter. I'd like to get one of those notes to prove to the guards that he should be locked up.

Or get his house, whichever.

as I understand it, one can block, and while blocking try to convince someone to stop attacking. ... makes me wonder if I can talk him out of getting himself killed. (the guard killed him instead of me).

Spoiler for Hiden:
This is exactly why I felt bad.  Nobody was spying on him (by the way, I never snuck around.  I actually went and talked to the people who stated that they saw him staring at them all the time and knew he was just delusional.  Then, after he attacked me and I killed him, I got his ke yand went into his house and read all those notes.  The guy had certainly lost it and I felt bad for him.

An update on my game.  I am about 22 hours into it and I think I am level 7.  I have yet to go to the Imperial City.  I have yet to go to all the major cities.  In fact, I have yet to do anything in the main quest apart from the initial delivery of the Amulet of Kings.  This is why I love the Elder Scrolls series.  I have spent a great deal of time in the game and I haven't even seen a fraction of it.  Bravo, Bethesda!

Ran into a bug last night, but was able to use game mechanics to get around it.  Basically, the head of CHorrol's Fighter's Guild, decided to lock herself up in her room.  I sat outside her door and did a wait of an hour at a time for 3 days of game time and she stayed in there.  Finally, I went and bought a scroll of Easy Lock and unlocked her door and went in.  SHe was lying in bed and she got up and started yelling at me to get out. I initiated conversation, progressed what I had to and left.  She immediately went to the Fighter's Guild, where she usually is.  Not sure how the door got perma-locked.  THe only two places I have seen her normally is the Fighter's Guild and walking around her house, but not stuck up in he room on the third floor for 3 days.  You could argue it's Radiant AI, but I doubt they meant for an NPC who is the head of the Fighter's Guild to be accessible only by committing a crime and leave here there for 3 days.  The fact she immediately went to the Guild after I unlocked the door further proves my suspisicions.

I am wearing 2 rings now I wonder how many you can wear at one time?

The only problem with night eye, is I have actually missed loot because everything is that bluish tint.  I turned off night eye and went through a tunnel I had previously  been in and because I could now see in color, I saw a potion with a purple hue that I had previously missed.  So, it is great for seeing your way through, but maybe not so great for collection of the phat lewt.

Just curious regarding the brightness levels everyone is using.  My theory is that if I am in a cave with no light source, I shouldn't be able to see anything.  If I light a torch in that scenario, I should only be able to see a little bit in front of me.  What this means is that without Night Eye on, going through caves is tough until I get to sections with some lighting.  Now, I am a Kajiit, so I get a free night eye, but I trade off and on using it.  Is everyone as strict about it as I am or do you guys turn up the brightness so that you can see in a cave no matter what the lighting?

I got attacked(!) by a unicorn last night. I didn't know they attacked! That thing was hard to kill, too. Lots of backpeddling.
And it seems the unicorn horn is only worth 1 gold! I need to get to a store to make sure.

I seem to remember reading previews of Oblivion that mentioned a Radiant AI bug that allowed a monster to killa unicorn that was important for the main quest. I hope you didn't just kill that same unicorn.

They made quest NPCs unkillable in the game, so this shouldn't be the same unicorn.  In Morrowind you could kill anyone in the game except one person and finish the main quest, but they made it so you couldn't potentially screw yourself in this game.

How do you cancel pulling the bow back to fire.  Sometimes I think I want to shoot something and then I change my mind, but I have not found a way to cancel out of pulling the bow string back.  Anyone figure this out?

Anyone figured out a way yet to cancel when you've pulled an arrow back?  I've tried everything I can think of and the only way seems to be to just shoot it at nothing.

I played again last night and am just enjoying the hell out of it.  I decided to test how the NPCs travel.  I had a quest to go to a distant city to find a person.  I get there and when I deliver the news to this person, they decide to go visit that person in the original town.  So, I followed that person to see if they really travel there.  They do.  It took a while, but I followed him almost all the way to the original town.  I say "almost" because something very bad happened.

I got a dirty disc error. So, I pulled the disc out and looked at it and it was fine.  Put it back in and I got some error about the disc needing to be for a 360 to play or something to that effect.  I take it out and put GRAW in. Same thing.  So, I turned off the 360 and booted it back up and it worked.  However, about 5 minutes later, I had the same thing happen.  I repeated turning it off and on and I didn't have the problem again.  Not sure what was up with that, but I hope my 360 isn't going bad.  I have already replaced one and this one has worked flawlessly for so long.
7783  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Metroid Prime:Hunters reviews are coming in,and impressions! on: March 22, 2006, 01:25:21 PM
I played the single player yesterday a little, getting up to the first bounty hunter.  One problem is that I havebeen playing a lot of PSP lately, so the graphics are pretty bad to me, but I know they are good for the DS.  I used the default controls of looking around with the stylus, shooting wth L, and moving with the D-Pad.  COntrol is fluid and I had no problems.

One negative is getting into scan mode.  I wish you could just tap the button to flip to it instead of having to hold that button down for a few seconds.  Not sure why they put the delay in there.  The reason it can be bothersome is I want to scan enemies, but the delay makes them get some hits on me.

The level design was fairly simple, but I enjoyed the little platforms you have to jump up to get to a higher level.  Again, the interface is easy, with double tapping making you jump.  I didn't really miss a platform, so that means the controls are pretty good.

I didn't try multiplayer at all.

7785  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion - Impressions on: March 22, 2006, 01:18:16 PM
Got mine yesterday and played a bit last night.  The graphics can be a mixed bag, but overall I am impressed with them.  The suprising thing about them is that I get pop-in with rocks, which I didn't expect.  The LoD out in the distance I can understand, but the pop-in of rocks and even structures kind of threw me for a loop since I expected better.  That may sound like I am harping ont he graphics, but I am really not.  Overall, I love them and the world looks beautiful to me.  Can't wait to explore more.

I made a Ranger-type character and went with Agility and Willpower as my major attributes.  I then picked Marksman, Restoration, Athletics, Blade, Alchemy, Stealth, and Light Armor.

When I left the sewers I kinf of headed past the Imperial city right to the delivery of the item I was given in the sewers.  I did kind of play aroud a bit outside.  Found a shrine which summoned daedric bracers and dagger.  Also found another shrine which told me I needed more fame or something to be considered worthy.  Went through a tiny townand got a quest to get 12 scales from slaughter fish (is this WoW? smile ), but I think I will wait on that one to get some kind of underwater breating help.

Oh, I picked Kajiit which rules because I get a 0-mana spell to see int he dark.  So, I don't need torches.  I was surprised how dark the game can get.  I bumped up the brightness two nothces, which still makes me fairly blind in caves and such without the night eye or torch, but helped a little bit indoors and at sun down.

I found a cave with some bandits and explored that.  OOne cool thing in there is there was a pit with boards going over it.  I crossed the boards a couple of times and on my third trip over them, they snapped and I fell in.  I didn't expect that, so it was cool.

I travelled further and found some abandoned fort, which was apparently a dungeon of sorts, but I wanted to get to the town for my delivery, so I went back out.  I found a highwayman who demanded gold form me to pass, but I arrowed him good.

That reminds me, I sure can run fast backwards.  Maybe that is because of picking Athletics as a major skill, but I was able to keep meleers out of range.

I finally made it to my destination and talked a bit with the guy there.  He has a bunch of books on a shelf, so I quit there so that I can do some reading tonight.

I did make one mistake in not going to the Imperial city in that I am at full encumbrance and really need to sell some stuff I have.

With Morrowind, I played a thief character and pretty much stole everything.  In this game, I will not steal anything, since my character is on the up and up.  Will be a totallydifferent way to play and I like that.  It is nice that the game lets you know if you wouldbe stealing something or not by having the icons be red when you hover over things.

If you are playing on veteran level, there are not 9 zones of batting.  It is simplified to 4 zones.  Up - Down - Right - Left.

I know this will sound confusing, but:
It can get kind of tricky if a ball is thrown high and right and you guess high, whether or not the computer will "give" you the location.  If it is more High than it is Right, you will most likely get the crosshairs, if it is more Right than High, you may not get it.
The unconfusing way to say it is, if you guess high, and the computer throws high, you will get the crosshairs.  If it is high but super right, the right outweighs the high, and you won't get the crosshairs.

It's not a perfect system, but that is because it is taking the 9 zones and making them into 4.  Still, I find it works just fine.

Thanks.  This answers my question just fine.  This explains why it gives me the lock on some things when I thought it didn't quite match what I picked.  Do you know if you can use the D-Pad for this since it would be better to be precise for just 4 zones?

No.  It is hard to explain, I think.  I will play with it some more and try to figure it out.  I think on the higher difficulty levels is when they start using 9 actual zones.
7799  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PSP] MLB - The Show on: March 14, 2006, 04:00:27 PM
Thanks for the reply.  One more thing.  Does Veteran level use all 9 zones?  It seems like it might use less, but I can never get any consistency going when I choose to figure it out.  For instance, I picked SW with my stick and it lit up the target on the W portion of the box.  Well, I didn't pick W, so I am guessing there are less zones?  Maybe 4?

Also, you know how when you pitch, if you go to the extreme with the analog stick, you will pitch well outside the strike zone?  Does this apply with predicting pitches?  You can't see the cursor when pitch guessing, so I am hoping not.
