7761  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Field Commander Impressions on: May 26, 2006, 12:12:55 PM

Yeah if the multiplayer sucks I have no interest in this game.  I may swap it for Monster hunter as well provided I hear that it is easy to get online with a tunnel program.

THe problem with the tunnel program, is you have to have a specific router or wifi adapter hooked to a PC to be able to use it.  It isn't like you can just up and use it with any old network setup at home.  I am still deciding whether I think it is worth the trouble to go buy one of the supported wifi cards to get this to work or not.
7762  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / monster hunter: freedom impressions on: May 26, 2006, 12:03:31 PM
I played through the first 6 introduction quests given by the chief guy last night.  Basically, these serve as a kind of tutorial to teach you how to hunt and gather in the game.  I can tell already that this game is right up my alley as it has these wacky cats that help take care of your farm.

Semiconcious is very correct in saying this is a hunting sim, though don't think of Deer Hunter in that regards.  It is like a hunting sim RPG type of thing.  If you're not hunting, you can gather materials to upgrade your armor.  You basically do quests to get out there and either hunt or gather specific items to earn cash.  I hunted three different prey in those quests I did.  One was an herbivore which I had to hunt to get some raw meat and then cook that meat.  Oh, that reminds me of one cool thing, which is that over time you get hungry and it affects your stamina.  So, while you are out int he field hunting, your stamina bar will get shorter and shorter and you can increase it by eating meat that you have cooked.

A second monster I fought was a large boar who would charge me.  He was pretty fun to take down and let me see how different the strategies for monsters can be (the herbivores were basically stand and spear).  Finally, the last were a pack of velociprey, which had this fun jumping attack, which again made me have to change the way I approached hunting them.

I am not very far in, I know, but I assume I will be introduced to a variety of monsters which will vary in how I have to track them down and hunt them.  So far, I like and I assume I will continue to like.  I will update again when I have some more time in.  I can tell, though, that this is the type of game that not everyone would enjoy.
7763  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / monster hunter: freedom impressions on: May 25, 2006, 12:03:40 PM
I picked it up up yesterday, but haven't played.  I was trying to get the Kai thing to work and then realized you either have to have a specific brand and model of router to work or a PC with one aof a bunch of certain brands and models of wireless cards in them.  I have neither, so I couldn't make it work.

I will probably play it tonight, though, and take a little break from Metal Gear Acid 2, which just plain rocks.
7764  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / What are you buying this week? (5/22) on: May 23, 2006, 03:46:06 AM
Might purchase either Monster Hunter or Table Tennis or both or none.  How's that for making up your mind? Tongue
7765  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PSP] Monster Hunter Online issues... on: May 23, 2006, 01:51:50 AM
Ha, I wouldn't exactly call this an "issue" per se, in that it isn't like it's a bug or anything.  The fact that this has no infrastructure has been known for some time, too.  I want to get it, but still waiting on reviews before biting on it.
7766  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is Halo 2 SP worth playing? on: May 20, 2006, 08:20:31 PM
Still playing the SP of Halo 2 and still loving it.  I must be alone in liking the fact they they switch you up between the alien and Master Chief.

7769  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Is Halo 2 SP worth playing? on: May 19, 2006, 12:03:57 PM
I bought Halo 2 last week to play the SP on my 360 and so far I have enjoyed it a great deal.  I am not playing it upon release with expectations which could never possibly be fulfilled by all the hype, though.  I'm sure you will enjoy it.

So is this going to be a cartridge which will be purchased?

Yes.  THe big thing that excites me about this is that I will be able to WiFi game at hotles when I travel.  Pretty much all hotels require you to accept a ToS before you can browse and get your MAC registered.  Without web browsing you can't play your DS over that network.  However, once the Opera browser comes out, you hook up, get that MAC in there and then popo in a game and away you go.

It's stupid that it's exclusively being released on the PS3.  It may be one hell of a game like ffx was, but it's not worth paying $500 to play it.  Is there anything else coming out for the PS3 that's even remotely as close to anticipated as ffxiii?

7774  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I think my DS Lite just bit the dust - UPDATED! on: May 16, 2006, 05:21:25 PM
Update on this. NCSX got my Lite and Brian Age cart I sent back and thye tried the cart in another DS Lite and the DS Lite broke. So, for some reason my Brian Age cart is shorting DSes. They sent it off to Japan for repair or replacement and they say it will take 10 days for them to get it back.

As far as Brain Age goes, all I did was put the DS in sleep by closing the lid the day before it broke and then when I opened it and hit Training it froze. The only thing I can think is that the cart didn't like that it still thought it was the day before but the DS would have the current date and it freaked out. I would think someone would have run into this before though. Normally I back out from the menu when I see yesterday's date on the Brain Age screen, but that day I forgot to. Anyone else use sleep mode and Brain Age a lot?

I bought Halo 2 used today because I never played it and the Halo 3 trailer got me thinking I should catch up on the story.  I played Halo 1 to completion co-op with a friend.  So far, it has been a fun game, especially with the dual-wielding weapons.

Time to turn in my man card, the game getting the most interest from me based on what I saw is Viva Pinata.

Me too.  That one and Fable 2 are the two games I'm looking the most forward to.

What exactly do you do in this game?  I've only seen screenshots and can't quite figure it out.  From what I can tell it looks like the fancy fur effects they used on Conker (specifically, the furry tails).

The GT preview says "Viva Piņata lets you control a variety of living piņata species in an ever-changing garden environment."  Okay...  Can I beat the hell out of them until their candy pops out?  More importantly, can I swing the Wiimote to do so?

I guess I'll just have to download the video and find out!  So many games to check out now...  The future on all fronts looks bright, I just wish I could play them now.

Looks like a cross between Black & White, The Sims, and Harvest Moon.  You really should download the trailer...it will sell you instantly.

I think it could also be called part Animal Crossing as well.  I am definitely interested in it.

Make sure you leave the battery out for literally a minute or so, to make sure any residual power is gone.

I assume all residual power was gone since I had to put all the settings back in.  I will give it a try, though.

Edit:

Nope, didn't work. frown  Sending it off today.  Oh, how I will miss it.  Guess no NSMB next week for me. *cry*
7779  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Lots of new content on Marketplace now! on: May 12, 2006, 12:18:25 PM
I played both MotoGP and Lost Planet.  Lost PLanet I liked a lot, though hopefully they will give you objectives and cool little side things to do.  If all it is is running through levels shooting stuff, I think I will get bored quickly.  I enjoyed the art design of the creatures a great deal.  I also like the mechanic where you slowly lose energy or whatever that stuff is based on the fact that it is so cold (I am guessing that is why you lose it).

With MotoGP, I played one race and came in 20th.  It is interesting how differently a bike apparently races than a car and I was just not adjusting very well.  I will have to give it another go and slow down better at the turns.  The graphics were not as good as I had seen on the screen shots in my opinion.  However, this is probably due to the fact that they were taken from views you wouldn't actually be doing during a race, just like they do with Madden screens.

I gave htis a try just now and it seems to have fixed the clock problem, but the thing still won't read DS games.  Thanks for the suggestion, though.

Well, I talked to NCS and they want me ot send the unit back for them to take a look at.  So, I suppose that's positive news.
7783  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / I think my DS Lite just bit the dust - UPDATED! on: May 10, 2006, 02:46:38 PM
I opened my Lite today to play a little Brain Age.  I had put it to sleep by closing it and I just clicked on Training.  Well, the unit locked on me.  So, I turned it off and turned it back on and it shows no DS cart is found.  I took it out, reinserted and no go.  I tried another DS cart and get the same thing.  I tried blowing in the slot and trying the games again and nothing.  Also, some GBA carts work and some do not.  I also had one GBA cart be recognized and then freeze the game once it got past the GBA splash screen.  So, it looks like my Lite is screwed.

The problem I have is that it is an import of a Japanese unit and I am not sure if I can easily get it repaired or replaced.  I wrote to National Console Support where I bought it to see if they can do anything or make any suggestions.  I have a sinking feeling I am screwed.  I've only had the unit for a little over a month and have never had any problems with Nintendo hardware in the past.  Sucks to be me.

The second one.

Why did you bother to buy the first game anyway?  Factions is stand-alone.

Because I wanted to experience the first world first.  In order to do that, I have to own it.  I will eventually buy Factions, I am sure.
7788  Gaming / Multiplayer Madness (MMO or otherwise) / Guild Wars question on: May 01, 2006, 03:14:44 PM
I bought the original Guild Wars campaign yesterday and made a Ranger.  I am level 7 now and getting close, I assume, to leaving the starting area.  I am starting to realize I think I want Assassin as my secondary profession.  So, my question is this, how do you get Assassin as your secondary?  Can I do it in the pre-searing world once I buy Factions, or do I have to create a new character with Factions and choose it as secondary over there?

Both IGN and Gamespot have reviewed it.  I am too lazy to look it up, but I think IGN gave it around a 6.5 and Gamespot around a 7.9.  Both reviews criticized micromanagement of units and all over the board difficulty.

7792  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo changes name of Revolution to..... on: April 28, 2006, 09:28:48 PM
Quote from: "kathode"
My problem with the name isn't that I think it's going to sink the system, or that it instantly makes any of their good ideas bad.  It's that once again they've felt the need to unneccessarily fortify this childish image that they want to project.  Revolution was a great name that I was thinking indicated their acceptance that they didn't need to force this schism between "mature" gamers and everyone else.  But then out comes the Wii.

I think it's great that "Wii" is a silly word that will have children giggling and cause curious mothers to wander over to their display cases and interact with it.  But you might as well be coming on my gaming forums and telling me Tickle-Me Elmo has universal appeal and I'm too stuck in my ways to appreciate it.  The core gaming demographic is not shrinking - it's growing.  And if you want to stick your Wii in their eye, you're welcome to.  I'm sure there's a good deal of money to be made by catering to the fringes and bringing new demographics into the fold.  I'm sure they'll sell a lot of systems to someone.  Just don't expect everyone to love you for it.

Here's the thing, though.  I don't think the word "Wii" is childish.  It is if you think of penises and urine, but honestly, the first time I looked at it, I thought of "we" as in joining people together.  The juvenile portion of it never even crossed my mind.  I think it is a bizarre name that will most likely intrigue non-gamers to wonder what the hell it is exactly and this is what Nintendo wants.  The hard core gamers like me will either get a Wii or not get one based  on a bunch of factors.  For me, I am getting one because I love Nintendo and the products they come up with.  Others think the yare too grown up for it or the types of games that Nintendo makes just doesn't appeal to them.  Whatever those gamers' reasons are are personal to them and there is nothing wrong with it.  They can go play the PS3 or 360.  Other hardcore gamers will buy the Wii because it is what interests them and the name doesn't much matter.

Nintendo has people talking about Nintendo right now and we all know there is no such thing as bad publicity.  So, let the Internet "comedians" have their fun.  I do think Nintendo is taking a big risk with their strategy, but I also think they have no other choice.  They cannot compete with Sony or MS and they honestly don't belong in that competition.  Let them do what they do best, which is make games and systems for the whole family.

Okay, this game has me pissed.  I want to be a magic user.  I made one.  However, I die every two seconds.  Everyone says not to group until level 10, but I actually get killed by decent challenge mobs, which everyone says are the ones to fight.  I played for an hour last night and netted 100 xp.  Not sure I will be playing it much longer.  I like challenges and all, but if I am going to play an hour, I need more than 100 xp.
