Yes, he had rented it.  Also, our squad went from Professional++ to just Professional when he left, so now we can all hate him for selfish reasons.
7602  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Oblivion coming to the PSP? on: July 28, 2006, 12:20:19 PM
As much as I like Elder Scrolls, if it is just a port of Oblivion for the 360, I wouldn't pick it up.  If it was some kind of alternate adventure, that would be great.  No dual analogs wwould make playing the first person aspect of this pretty tedious, though.  Yes, I know games use the face buttons, but I always find it uncomfortable, and really the only game I didn't mind it was Syphon Filter, but that is because there was lockon.  I am not sure there are enough buttons on the PSP to have lockon and still be able to do everything you can ont he 360 with the buttons (hotkeys, map, etc.)
7603  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Question about RSS feeds and the PSP on: July 28, 2006, 12:17:30 PM
Did you subscribe to podcast RSS feeds or the main feeds on their blogs?  You can't RSS the blog postings, but the podcasts are just fine.  I just tried adding Major Nelson's and it worked just fine for me.  I chose the RSS for Blogcasts, MP3 option on his site and that one worked.

7606  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Chromehounds - NOW WITH IMPRESSIONS on: July 27, 2006, 06:51:23 PM
One thing that would make it easier for us to run multiple hounds is if the little template thing you can trade with others for a particular mech build would list the parts you need.  If just one part in the build is from another faction and you don't have that part, it tells you that yo ucan't build it, but since it doesn't tell you which parts you are lacking you can't find that part and maybe get it in the lottery.  I really would like to have some of the expert players' particular mech builds for a role, but I am pretty sure everyone uses mixed parts.

Well based on this thread about fanboy fights itself turing into one over the DS vs PSP I'd say its still alive and kicking...

I'm not a fanboy of either system, though.  I like them both.  I do have an opinion about one being better than the other, though, but I don't consider either system to be "my" system.  And that's what separates me from the fanboys.  I don't think anyone in this thread has honestly acted like a fanboy, though...not even Devil.
7608  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Chromehounds - NOW WITH IMPRESSIONS on: July 27, 2006, 06:00:47 PM
Good points, Papa Smurf.  The other thing is that we will probably need to be pickier about what classes we take out on missions (this means each player needs to make a mech for each role and learn to use them) if we want to succeed as the AI gets harder.  Also, in bringing those particular roles, we need to make sure they use them for what they are for.  I'm probably the most guilty as far as sticking to one mech.  I have only ever used my soldier mech and I should really branch out to help out when we need it.
7609  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PSP Firmware 2.8 out on: July 27, 2006, 05:56:51 PM
Yeah, it would be nice to get those loading times down with the ability to load games on a stick.  I don't care about emulation since I don't own any of the ROMs, and therefore I would be illegally playing those games.  I do wish Sony would support legitimate homebrew development, though.  Unfortunately, there probably isn't a very good way to do that and keep the emulators and prirated versions of current games off the device.

I guess one way would be for Sony to sell new games via digital distribution with whatever protection they are going to put on the PS1 emulated games.  This way you can download a game, throw it on a stick, and away you go.  I have a 2G stick, so I shouldn't have any problems (but even if the games were bigger, there are still 4G and 8G sticks coming).

I never watch movies on my PSP, but video blogs are of interest to me, so having the RSS feeds for video are great.

I LOVE IT!!

I agree, Soulchilde. I own both systems and while each has their strengths, PSP is currently winning and with the release schedule I see for the rest of the year, the PSP will have way more quality titles than the DS. I do agree that DS is finally getting some more quality games, but the PSP just smacks its ass with what they have coming down the pipe.

This is why you don't see as many threads about this suff. It's all a matter of personal taste.

I think it's funny though!  biggrin

Tell you what, Devil.  Let's look at sales data at the end of the year and see which one comes out on top.  We all know you don't like the DS and we all know I like both systems, so your opinion seems a little biased.  However, the sales data will not be biased either way, so we can use that as our little friend.  Care to make any friendly wagers? smile
7611  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PSP Firmware 2.8 out on: July 27, 2006, 02:29:02 PM
I downloaded it this morning and the major feature it adds is the ability to download videos from RSS feeds.  I tested it out this morning, downloading the latest Digg video and it worked great.  It also supposedly adds the ability to name videos whatever you want and drop them in a certain video folder for playing.  Supposedly, this doesn;t work for the AVC MP4s, though, which are Sony's goofy little version of them.  Not a big deal, though, since they still work the way you used to have to format them.

Ah, well maybe if the wars last more than half a day, I will actually see some of these new parts. smile  Hopefully the tweak they did will allow these things to drag out a month or so.

Last night when I played, I was getting my ass handed to me.  It used to be I could run in and stand toe to toe with a bunch of mech.s  Now, though, I am getting my weapons damaged to where they become useless and then getting completely destroyed.  Not sure if it is the fact that we are taking higher level missions as people rank or if they changed something in the patch they did.  The problem I have, though, is if it is because we are fighting higher ranked mechs, I am still using the parts I had from the beginning.  When are we going to be able to buy better parts (other than lottery)?  I'm not sure how I can keep up with these guys as we continue to rank up if I can't buy better guns that do more damage and better armor.

I had put this down for a bit, but got to it again recently.  I made it my mission to complete Hard mode and unlock the Insande mode and get the female cheerleaders.  Well, mission accomplished!  I tried the first song on Insane mode, though, and I just got my ass handed to me.  The dots are smaller, they are more spread out, and they don't give you as much of an indication as to where things are going to be ahead of time.  Definitely a challenge and I think it will basically require me to memorize the positions of the dots to get through the songs.

Yeah, when I saw it was 39.99, I immediately thought that the downloadable car packs were going to be very high priced.  We'll see if I'm wrong, but I just can't shake the feeling.  Of course, optional car packs are optional, so you still get a $40 game which will hopefully have a large amount of cars in it.
7627  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Has Portable Gaming Changed Your Gaming Habits? on: July 20, 2006, 02:22:43 PM
I, too, have done portable gaming since the original Gameboy.  Actually, I supposed those old things like Merlin and the Mattel handheld football game count as well, so back that far, I suppose.  So, nothing has really changed because I've been doing it as a kid.  I am amazed, though, how much time I put into my DS and PSP while at home.  I mean, I have all the other console systems and yet I have historically played my portables more.  Lately, though, the 360 has become king of my gaming time now that I have some good people to play multi over Live with.

I downloaded the demo this morning and took it for a spin.  Fun little platformer with interesting art syle and Lost Viking-like game mechanics.  The demo lets you do about 4 or so levels and I definitely enjoyed.  Definitely wouldn't be worth a retail release, but is great fun as an arcade title.

Stop while they're ahead?  You know, I used to love me some GTA, but the series has just gotten old and stale for me.  There's only so many times I can run around commit crimes and I think I've reached my limit.

I really theink they've done some innovative things in video gaming with their whole open-ended thing, but I think I'd like them to do something else with it (like Mercenaries did).  Something sci-fi might be nice smile.

By the way, I don't think I've commented too much on this game in this thread, so I want to rectify that.  Quite simply, the game rocks.  By game, I just mean the multi-player, because the single player doesn't interest me in the least.  I did the first 6 missions for Soldier and then got on to do multi-player and never looked back.  I've only ever made a soldier and I love the role.  I go in guns a'blazin' without much fear.  As long as I can get in close range, I can usually survive.

I love the mech customization part and I have really worked to get my mech looking the way I want.  I wish I could save a picture of the mech and show others because I think he looks pretty cool and I want to show people who don't have the game what kind of things are possible.  I just wish I could find a missile counter that only weighed about 100.  Might go look at the guide ot see if one exists.  I am sure if it does, it has like 5 charges and probably wouldn't be worth it.

Playing in the Goonsquad is a load of fun and I think we have a very good group of guys (and girl) in the squad.  The game is very addicting because of the MMO aspect and I thought I had left that behind after playing MMORPGs since Meridian 59 and finally stopping when I cancelled WoW recently.  Chromehounds is much better as an addiction, though, because it doesn't take much of a time investment.  It isn't like a raid which could take 3 hours to do.  Missions are going to take 20 minutes at the most, usually.

PhillyPeteRock keeps sending me messages begging for some of us to give up Chromehounds and come play with him, but I think he is going to be disappointed.  Pete, if you are reading this, go get Chromehounds.  It's a shooter at heart, except it is a shooter with awesome robots.

THe demo reminded me that I don't like RTS games.  I like them in theory, but they just don't grab me and I have wasted so much money on these games that I give up on after a few levels.  THe sad part is I still almost broke down and purchased it just because it was Middle Earth.  Ah, the power of licensing.
