7561  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Castlevania: Symphony of the Night to the 360? on: August 04, 2006, 02:59:58 PM
I never got around to playing that one, though I have played every other 2D Castlevania.  Now, I can correct that mistake.  Man, I love me some Castlevania.

What's to explain?  Zombie=bad.  Decapitated zombie=good.

Tomb Raider on 360 (I had stopped playing a while a go due to being distracted, but just picked it up again last night and am loving it), Dead Rising demo, Tekken on PSP, and VP on PSP.  Will probably start playing some Chromehounds again after my recent hiatus.

May be going back to rental and demo... I also dont like how you cant unlock the untimed mode without beating the game multiple times.  It is a cheap way of adding replay value to a game.

Timed may take it directly off my list.

Oh, I thought everyone realized you only had 72 hours to play at a time.  However, from what I hear, there are so many things going on at the mall, that when you play again, there are plenty of missions to do that you will have missed, so the game won't be the same when you play it again.

7566  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Loco Roco demo UMDs! on: August 04, 2006, 12:19:35 PM
Loco Roco is one of my most anticipated games this year.  I played the Japanese demo and then downloaded the English one when it came out even though it was the same.  It is the only demo I have ever played that I actually go back and play it again from time to time.  I love the art style in the game and love how the little individual roco's all have their little part to sing of the song that plays in the level.  Very unique looking game that you wonder how Nintendo didn't come up with it.

I want to be hyped for this game, but I think it will be a rental for me.  Right now it just looks like State of Emergency to me.  That is why it will be a rental for me.

EDIT:  Just watched that video... count me IN!

Exactly...State of Emergency with zombies spinning on excavators.  That's the difference.  Nice to see you've come around.
7568  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Mario Hoops 3 on 3 on: August 03, 2006, 08:18:01 PM

I dont buy the argument "its all about gameplay" though because if that were true, we'd still be playing away on our Atari 2600's because after all, it's all about the games and not the graphics!

That's because the gameplay of most Atari games is crap by today's standards.  Notice I said "most" because there are still some games that stand the test of time and I will play them despite the fact that the graphics are ancient.  Pitfall is a perfect example.

7572  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Street Fighter II online? on: August 02, 2006, 01:34:47 PM
Downloaded the demo and just hated it.  It's a good port and all, but Street Fighter was never my thing and I couldn't even beat the opponent in the demo.  He seemed to counter every move I made and he always kept me at a distance, making it hard to do anything.  I don't remember the AI being like that, though it might just be that way for the demo.  At any rate, any small desire I had to get the game (I am a collector-type and it would add to my old arcade game collection) is gone.
7573  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Nintendo Wii Specs Revealed on: August 02, 2006, 12:49:13 PM
Hopefully this stuff isn't a surprise to anyone as Nintendo has repeatedly said that Wii is not about graphics.  I have my 360 for that.  I want a Wii for playing unique games in a unique way and I think it will deliver on that beautifully.  It's the very reason I got my DS on launch and it hasn't failed me at all.  If you're a strict graphics whore, I think this isn't the system for you.

It's interesting that lots of people say they will get Wii as a secondary system to 360 (Wii60) or PS3.  As has been said before, if everyone gets Wii as their secondary machine, doesn't that make Wii the number one console?  Not sure that that will happen, but I think they are in a good position to do something very positive this gen.

My one problem is trying to do the air combos in the practice mode.  I just can't seem to do them.  I unlocked the Cammnd mini-game and I just can't make it through it because they bring up an air combo and I am done. frown

I think my big problem on those is timing and even watching it in action isn't helping me much because there are like 10 things you have to input.
7579  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Getting better at fighting games on: August 01, 2006, 01:27:20 PM
As I've states before I am not a big fan of fighting games.  The major reason is probably that I never seem to get better at them.  So, I picked up Tekken for the PSP and have vowed that I will get better at it.  Right now in Story Mode, I get to about the 6th stage and I start getting my ass handed to me on Normal.  I bumped it down to Easy and was still losing.  I made it through the whole story at that point by just low kicking my way to victory, where I just pressed the same button over and over while crouched and got through.  Not very fun, though.

So, what tips do you guys recommend for getting better at these things?  They always have Practice modes, but I guess I don't know how to use them effectively, because it's one thing to fight an opponent who just stands there waiting for you to hit him and another to fight a moving AI.  So, what's the best way to use Practice Mode?

Help me, oh GT Fighting gurus!

BY the way, you guys have heard that people are complaining about the game locking up their systems and some even having them rendered not playable by Chromehounds, right?  Hasn't happened to me at all (I do normally get lockups in GRAW from time to time, though).  Anyone running into this?  As much as we as a colelctive play this game, I would think someone would have posted they had problems with it, but nobody has (that I can remember), so I find it interesting.

A guy at Gamers With Jobs Press Pass just had his die while playing Chromehounds.

Was it something you actually equipped from the status screen or just something you ran over? The only equippable item I found in 2 run-thrus was a staff (both times).

It was equippable.  I found about 5 or so equippable items when I played.  One was a wind cloak, one was some kind of mace, one was a clover, one was a knight emblem, and the other was a helmet.  Actually, I may have found even one more, but I can't remember what it was.

OK, well tell me how to equip the stuff...when I go into the status screen I never see it there...and I think I found 3 clovers, the wind cloak and some other junk.

Well, I don't have the demo anymore to tell you exactly, but I think I hit the Back button and there are like 4 empty slots to put stuff in.  One is for weapons, but I think the others are for other stuff.

Alright, I finished Chapter 1.  Game is still pretty cool, but as mentioend before, I wish they would tell me what the hell is going on.  During the sacred phase, I was allowed to look at the status of the dude I sent to Valhalla.  There were some events in there that I could click on, but I couldn't tell what the purpose of them was.  Also, for my requirements for Chapter 2, one of them is Warrior.  I don't see that as a skill I can teach.  Is it a skill or is it just the type of character?

I thought it was mildly enjoyable.  Dunno about a purchase though.

One thing that really grabs my goat is that if equip a 'blue cape' item or whatever, my character looks the exact same.  LOVE the paperdoll aspect of games and this game would be sweet if the charactered reflected visually what items you equip.

I forgot to mention this in my post, but since you've brought it up, it reminded me that I was thinking the same thing when playing.  I got some helmet from a chest and when I put it on, I expected to see myself wearing the helmet.  My expectation was not met.

I picked this up yesterday along with Tekken.  I've played through Chapter 0 so far and the game is interesting.  However, I do have one complaint.  They don't really explain the game mechanics very well.  My biggest example of that is with artifacts.  You beat that vampire and you get two artifacts, both of which you can either keep or give to Odin for a penalty.  THe problem is I don't know anything about that particular game mechanic (valuation?  I forget the term) and so I have nothing to base my decision on.  The only thing I know about it at all is what I have read here which is that you can keep every artifact you get, if you want, as long as you send a proper warrior to Valhalla every chapter.  Okay, but shouldn't the game give me information to make that decision myself?

Also, if would be nice if I could see what the artifact does before I were to decide to accept it or send it to Odin.  Is there a way to do this? (not that it matters, since everyone says to just keep them all anyway).

I've never really played one of these types of games, but with the demo there I figured I would give it a try.  Was fun while it lasted, though I am not sure whether I would want what seems to be simple gameplay to last through a $60 game.  I did like the fact that you can find weapons, armor, and items and you were limited in slots to wear them so that you had to make choices.  Not sure if the items are random that you get or not (in the treasure chests), but it would be cool if they were and you could put together sets and stuff.

I guess I will read some reviews.  If this had two player I think I would be all over it because I feel my son could play along with me without much trouble, but it looks to be 1 player only.  I am sure the reviews won't be very good since the Dynasty Warriors ones never are, so unless I read something in those reviews that stands out, I will probably skip this one, at least until it hits the bargain bin.

Oh, by the way, if you click the right analog stick you can zoom the camera out a little bit.

ALso forgot to mention the AI for your army.  Just as some others said, they appear to just stand around and not do much.  I left them behind and they all died, but since I kicked ass it didn't much matter.  Not sure if they play more into it on other stages or not, but I felt they were pretty useless and didn't much help me complete the stage.

My THEORY is that due to the releases of the 360 being so... stagnant, owners of a 360 will at least try the newest release out there.  And hey, if they find it decent, they'll love it because it's the newest release.  But different strokes for different folks I suppose.

My theory is that the game rocks in multiplayer with a good squad (see: GT Goonsquad) and that's why people like it so much.

7600  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Oblivion coming to the PSP? on: July 28, 2006, 12:20:19 PM
As much as I like Elder Scrolls, if it is just a port of Oblivion for the 360, I wouldn't pick it up.  If it was some kind of alternate adventure, that would be great.  No dual analogs wwould make playing the first person aspect of this pretty tedious, though.  Yes, I know games use the face buttons, but I always find it uncomfortable, and really the only game I didn't mind it was Syphon Filter, but that is because there was lockon.  I am not sure there are enough buttons on the PSP to have lockon and still be able to do everything you can ont he 360 with the buttons (hotkeys, map, etc.)
