7561  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PSP] Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth on: August 19, 2006, 03:09:50 PM
Well, I finally got around to finishing this game. I think I put 30+ hours into it and got the A ending.  The game and story were pretty good, though my one complaint is that they don't explain some of the game mechanics very well.  For instance, I never could really figure out what to do to get around Combo Guards and so some fights became very long and drawn out as I couldn't do damage.  Not a big deal, though, and was still able to finish the game.  I don't ever replay RPGs, so I won't be going back to do Hard Mode or the B ending.

It was great to finally play a quality RPG with nicer graphics than the DS/GBA/GB (I've definitely played some fun RPGs on those systems).  Now, onto my imported copy of Tales of Eternia!

Oh, I think I might actually check out VP2 when it comes out on the PS2 based on playing this game on the PSP.  I did enjoy the battle system for the most part and would be up for more of the same.

Playing Asgard Hill in Valkyrie Profile (PSP) to get the A Ending and then starting on both Phoenix Wright(DS) and Tales of Eternia )PSP), which I got in this week.  I will also give Dead Rising some time since I have been away from home all week and haven't been able to put any attention to it.

Nothing, unless there is some kind of stellar review for Deep Labyrinth, which I seriously doubt.

Wait...I'm trying to figure out what about that trailer makes people suddenly anxious for this game.  All they did was basically show cut scenes.  No real gameplay videos that I could see (I didn't notice any GUI, anyway).  How can you tell this is going to rock just from cut scenes?

According to the Gamespot review, if you miss one case, you can't do any of the ones after that.  Are they wrong, or am I misinterpreting what you said?

I think you're misinterpreting.  No, you can't do any of the cases after you miss one, but you can still play out the 72 hours, from what I understand.  It's just you get the crap ending and you never find out what happened.

Any game thatt I play that doesn't have multiple saves AND at least close to a save anytime/anywhere system, automatically loses some points from me. That doesn't mean that I will hate a game, just like it less.....

I actually tend not to like save anywhere/anytime games.  SUre, they're nice for convenience when you need to go somewhere and you can save.  However, for me, they are more of a nuisance as I find myself saving after I move 5 feet.  Move 5 more feet. Save.  Yes, I know I can just not save, but the point is that having that crutch there makes me use it.  When I have only certain spots to save, I enjoy the game more because I am not looking at the save screen every minute.
7575  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dead Rising impressions! on: August 10, 2006, 12:30:51 PM
One other thing I should mention.  If you miss a case, you can still play through the rest of the game.  You probably just get a different ending because you didn't do all the cases.  I actually like this case structure because, like in real life, things don't sit waiting to happen until you show up.  There is a series of events at this mall in the 72 hours you are going to be there and if you miss one, you miss finding out the true story of what happened at the mall.

Isn't this save system essentially the same as Resident Evil, but instead of needing to find a typewriter you have to find a bathroom or go back to the security room?

Yes, it is in a way, but the difference with this game is that you can save in a place that screws you.  Juniordan ran into it.  He saved in a spot where he missed the timing of the next case and therefore had to start over to complete the game.  Now, he could also have kept playing and leveled up and done side missions and then started over stronger than if he just gave up right then and there.  Me personally, I have no issues with the save system.  Yes, you can lose some work, but for me that adds a great deal of tension to the game and makes it better.

What this save system does that people are going to have to get used to is save smartly.  Before you go save, you need to make sure of what time it is and make sure you have enough of it left to progress the main story.  If you don't, you better not go save.

7578  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Dead Rising impressions! on: August 10, 2006, 04:39:56 AM
Just played through the 1st four cases and loved every minute of it.  I never died once, so can't say much about the save system other than I was able to save fine during the times I felt like I should.  I tried one escort missions with some barricaded people but they died on the way because I couldn't get through the closest route to return them safely.  THe scoops are a cool idea, but I am not really working on trying to do them right now, but instead concentrating on the main story so far.

It is interesting playing after playing the demo because I feel a lot more pressure on me now than I did in the demo.  In the demo everything was so leisurely, but with the addition of the missions, scoops, "bosses," and various other things I don't want to spoil, I think the final game is much more interesting than the demo and I think those dismissing it as just mindlessly killing zombies might be in for a surprise.  At the very least they should rent it.

I admit I don't actually know the difference between Pac Man and Ms. Pac Man.  Wasn't it just the bow in the hair?

Pac-Man had one maze and stationary fruit - Ms. has four mazes and the fruit moves around.

Don't forget about the transportation tunnels that would travel you from one side of the stage to the other.

Both games have that, though.

Oh, I also read on GAF that Pac Man does indeed have the ability to start from the last stage you did, so it is like Galaga.

Exactly.  The DS in the move was a Lite, wasn't it (I stopped playing the video within a minute due to it being stupid)?  That just came out in March in Japan.  PSP hasn't bene out 2 years and while the DS Phat is close to 2 years, it isn't there yet.

One of my favorites of all time is up this morning and I got to play a game.  Controls are fine and game is smooth.  Don't expect any extras, though, as this one is just like Galaga in that there are no extra features other than Leaderboards and Achievments.  I forgot to check whether you can start from the last board you lost all your lives on like in Galaga since I only played one game.  Maybe someone else can confirm.

See, in the first Untold Legends, you had a long load when you went back to the main town to sell items.  It got to where I just left stuff on the ground rather than have to wait for the other level to load.  The co-op does sound nice and would have made the game more bearable.

Untold Legends 2 Warrior's Code: Best RPG (IMO) for the PSP out there. It has a good singleplayer game and a fully featured online multiplayer (coop through the campaign and team battles like capture the flag) for up to 4 players. I've only been playing this for 3 days now and while it still hasn't beat my SOCOM addiction, it'd be my next favorite.
Usually around 30 people playing online at any given time.

I think the title of Best RPG would go to Valkyrie Profile before it would go to Untold Legends 2, though I haven't played the latter.  I am basing it on reviews I've read and also the fact that I played the first one and didn't even finish it because I was bored to tears.  Did they do anything to fix that in the second one?

The demo takes place on one of the first cases, so I imagine the difficulty is fairly low at that point in the game.  I was never in danger of dying, myself, but I still had fun and I'm not really into zombies, either.  We'll let you guys know how the later stuff turns out.

Just wanted to let you guys know that I will be trading in the game on Wednesday in order to get Dead Rising so yo ucan pull me out of the squad.  I love the game, but I find it, like all MMOs, tend to make me play that game and that game only, ignoring all other great games in the process.  Good for the wallet, but bad for the love of my hobby.  This is why I haven't been playing lately as I've been forcing myself to stay away.  Anyway, thanks to everyone in GT Goonsquad for making the game so fun to play.  I feel I got my money's worth out of it the limited time I did play.  It's just that when I play MMOs I feel like I have to play it a ton in order to keep up with everyone and it gets me into a trap where I start ignoring things that truly matter.  Games that have pause buttons don't do that to me. smile
