Why do they continue with these spinoffs?  Have they made a good one yet?  FFX-2 was asstacular even compared to FFX, that FF7 action game isn't getting good reviews, both movies kind of bit...

FFX-2 is a sequel, not a spinoff.

These days I don't look at review scores at all.  I've read far too many reviews that sound glowing and they give a low score or sound bad and they give it a high one.  I take a lot more stock in reading forum impressions and also reading the review itself and making my own determination from that.  Take Harvest Moon, for intance.  All the reviews have been 6s, but in reading the text, I find nothing wrong with the things they've pointed out as being bad.  I'll be picking it up today, despite the 6s.  If I'd have listened to them, I wouldn't have bought Dead Rising or Enchanted Arms or Starfox.

Has anyone had any luck selecting a player's car in the map?  Are we even supposed ot be able to do this?  I see lots of cars on the map, but when I put the cursor over them, I don't get any kind of tooltip telling me about them, which I do get when I first get into the map, because it has automatically selected someone.  Can someone tell me how to select another player to view them?  Thanks.

I couldn't handle the demo for this game, and my understanding is that the physics are the same in the full game.

From what I've seen the driving mechanics are handled better in the full version than in the demos.  Also, I turned off the driving help which changed things for the better as well.  Maybe you should give it a rent and turn off the driving help to see if you might like it.

for real: if ever the day arrives that i find myself getting sucked into the world of 'achievement points', that is the day i stop gaming...

It depends.  If you're sucked into it because you want to prove how hardcore you are because of your score, that's one thing.  I see no problem with being into them, though, because they extend the life of a game by basically giving you little mini-games and goals to complete that you probably never would have done before, thereby giving your game even more depth.  Why you would stop gaming because of this puzzles me.

For me it's also the achievement points. Now it just seems weird playing games without it.
Also, it is more of who has more achievement points than who beat the game first.

Unless you're playing King Kong...then they're the same thing.  icon_wink

You could spread them out yourself ya know. slywink

That would work if it wasn't for the fact that next week alone, there are two more.  Yeah, I guess I could spread out the 15 DS games I want this fall, but my problem is that some games end up being rare (I'm looking at you Trauma Center and Phoenix Wright).  I passed those up last Christmas thinking I would just get them at the beginning of this year and I didn't end up getting Phoenix Wright until last month.

Definitely Mario 3 on 3....I also want Megaman, Harvest Moon, Cooking Mama, and Star Wars Lego II (360).  Would also possibly be interested in Bounty Hounds.  If Best Buy adds Cooking Mama and Megaman to their web site for that buy 2 get 1 free thing, that would be enough to push me to scrounge up the funds to get it.  Otherwise, things will probably have to wait because there are too many games this month.

Harvest Moon never gets good reviews, so you shouldn't base your decision on that.  I think AWL has gotten some of the best reviews for an HM game and it is considered to be one of the worst HM games by fans.

I haven't played with a DS lite so I can't really say. But my Nintendo DS while being a handheld it isn't portable gaming refined. It's cumbersome and I think the DS lite is as well with the flip top and the digi pen gaming elements. All I can say is from experience, I've gone out with my PSP and used it to watch umd's while on the treadmill at the gym. While getting my car inspected I just stood outside playing a little Tekken DR.  In my opinion the PSP is the more portable gaming friendly of the two, of course ymmv and I'm sure there are more then a few people who would disagree with me.

It's funny, because for me the PSP is less portable because I feel I have to put it in theat Logitech case to keep it safe, which makes the thing very cumbersome.  Also, since there are zero loading times, I just flip open the lid and play and close it when I am done.  I use sleep mode for the PSP as well, but it takes a second for the disc to get spinning when I pull it out of sleep mode and if I am playing a game with load times, there's waiting there.  So, in my opinion, the Lite is much better for quick gaming sessions.

I've been touting the DS in this thread because I prefer it over the PSP, but really, it does come down to what you want out of a system.  I find the games more unique on the DS and more entertaining.  That doesn't mean the PSP doesn't have it's share of good games (Daxter and Syphon Filter jump immediately to mind).  SO, when deciding between the two, go look at all the games that are out and all the games coming out for this Christmas.  Make a list of all the must-haves for each system.  Then, make your decision based on that.  If I had to pick between the two, it would be DS all the way.  However, I didn't have to pick. smile

Nope

Personally, I don't like rumble anyway, and turn it off whenever I can. I can grok that other people like it, though.

The authors of that article retracted the statement that there is no vibration:

No Wii Remote rumble? Kittsy spotted that I'd made a mess of page 15 just after we finished the mag. It was too late to correct and resend the page to the printers (apparently yelling "Hold the presses!" doesn't actually result in boiler-suited workmen running about like mad and machinery grinding to a halt). So we forget about it, assuming the worst that might happen is that a few readers might write in to point and laugh at our mistake. Of course, now it's all over the internet. And we look very silly indeed. So, to clarify: the Wiimote does have a rumble. And a speaker. Shigsy isn't going to kick out either feature (as far as we know). DON'T PANIC.

As big of a Nintendo fanboy as I am and in his defense, those are the exceptions rather than the rule for Nintendo.  Yes, they've put out some M games on their systems, but they aren't so common.  Despite being 33, I actually tend to shy away from M games because I am relegated to playing them only late at night when the kids are in bed.  I do think Nintendo should put out more M games, though, even if I wouldn't necessarily buy them because I believe it would help with their success.

Yeah, I did it once before back around the 2.0 days, but ended up upgrading when GTA came out because it required a certain version to play the music files.  I kept upgrading ever since because I liked the features it added, but as I realize I don't really ever use this things to play games, much less browse the web, watch videos, or listen to music on it, maybe there are some interesting applications out there that I will use it for.  Plus, if I can take the games I do buy, rip them, and put them on a memory stick to cut down load times, that is probably my big justification.  A lot of the reason I pass the thing is over is because there a few games with no load times.

I do have an Onyx Lite preordered, but have been using the DS for months and never felt the screen was dark or anything like that except when trying to play in the car (i.e. in brightly lit areas it can get washed out).

I once thought this way, as well, until I saw pictures of the DS Lite screen.  Seriously, when I heard about the Lite, I thought, "I don't think my screen is dark or anything...why would I need it?  There is no way I am buying one."  Then, I saw the pics of the screens before it was released in Japan.  I imported.  'Nuff said.

The newer PSPs on the market cannot be downgraded to 1.5 due to changes in the motherboard.  Only models that could have been 1.5 originally (the newer ones start at 2.0 or 2.5) can be downgraded.

Mine was originally 1.5, so I shouldn't have a problem there.  I bought it on launch day.  I just need a way to downgrade.  Looks like I will have to wait.

7547  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [PSP] Firmware 2.81 on: September 08, 2006, 03:27:48 PM
The way I read that article, they posted all the 2.80 features and then the last thing they posted was what was new to 2.81, which is a security fix.  I am staying at 2.8, I think and maybe hoping they crack it there, so I can do some homebrew.  That way, I might actually do something with my PSP these days (though I did enjoy Valkyrie profile while my DS was on its month-long journey to and from Japan).

If you get a DS and don't get a Lite (they may have them used, but I would think those would be rare), you are doing yourself a great disservice to save a few bucks.  If you go DS, get the Lite.

Honestly and in the end, I gave both systems a chance. I've been through 2 DS's now (phat and a lite), and once you go PSP and if you're a graphics whore like I am, you just can't look back at the DS. It looks like something from 10 years ago. The PSP looks like something from the future.
Sure it's expensive, but look at everything it does. It has a web browser built-in. Move playback, MP3 player, more online games.. better graphics.. it's just a much better system, IMHO.

I am the exception to your rule.  I am a graphics whore, but the DS has such a better library than the PSP that I rarely play the PSP and have a monthly debate with myself on whether I should sell the damn thing or not.  I will agree that load times are exaggerated, but they are still more than you get on the DS and therefore they still bother me on a portable system.

Hell, even when I have good games to play (I currently have Tales of Eternia sitting in my PSP), I look at the PSP and DS sitting side by side and I just skip over the PSP.  I have such a love/hate relationship with the thing, but I keep it around because I don't want to sell it off and then regret it when something like Metal Gear Portable comes out and I can't try it.  And yet I know that when it does come out, I will be chest deep in good DS games and won't give my PSP a second glance.  I really should get some balls and sell the damn thing.

Do you need the Wii to be positioned in a certain way in relation to your TV? Do you have to be facing it? All my consoles are in a closet in the back of the room, opposite of the wall the TV is on.

Until now, I assumed that the Wii's controller would be RF and just 'know' the direction I'm holding it is pointing at the TV.

Any ideas?

From what I understand, there is a sensor bar you attach to the TV.  So, you can have the console wherever you want, but you need to put the sensor on the TV.

I was all gungho for this game, but I've read that it is on the shortish side and that the don't do much to make the gameplay interesting across the length of the game.  Basically, what you saw in the demo is all you do all game and while I love the charm of the graphics and such, I am was kind of hoping there was more to it.  I will probably wait to pick it up when it comes down in price.  Before the month started there were more games to buy than I could afford and so when something like this comes out and it isn't as great as I thought it might be, it is nice because it relieves some stress on the pocket.  Next week for DS alone is insane and then you factor in that I want Lego Star Wars 2 on the 360 as well.  That's all in one damn week.  Crazy.

I always want to start up playing EVE, but always get discouraged because I never have any clue what is going on.  The tutorial in the game is much better than it used to be, but I am still lost.  What I am looking for is maybe a place where I can see a description of all the professions in the game, so that I can choose what I might like to do in the game.  Then, I would want a guide to get me started on how best to pursue that career choice (starting race, etc.).  Is there such a beast out there and, if so, where?

Oh, I also realize this game is open-ended, so no need to respond with an answer along the lines of "anything you want."  You know what they say about a jack-of-all-trades.  Instead, I am looking for basic templates of professions (fighter, trader, etc.) that I can then tweak to my liking.
