7521  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / [PSP] Tekken:Dark Resurrection? on: August 01, 2006, 07:20:32 PM
My one problem is trying to do the air combos in the practice mode.  I just can't seem to do them.  I unlocked the Cammnd mini-game and I just can't make it through it because they bring up an air combo and I am done. frown

I think my big problem on those is timing and even watching it in action isn't helping me much because there are like 10 things you have to input.
7522  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Getting better at fighting games on: August 01, 2006, 01:27:20 PM
As I've states before I am not a big fan of fighting games.  The major reason is probably that I never seem to get better at them.  So, I picked up Tekken for the PSP and have vowed that I will get better at it.  Right now in Story Mode, I get to about the 6th stage and I start getting my ass handed to me on Normal.  I bumped it down to Easy and was still losing.  I made it through the whole story at that point by just low kicking my way to victory, where I just pressed the same button over and over while crouched and got through.  Not very fun, though.

So, what tips do you guys recommend for getting better at these things?  They always have Practice modes, but I guess I don't know how to use them effectively, because it's one thing to fight an opponent who just stands there waiting for you to hit him and another to fight a moving AI.  So, what's the best way to use Practice Mode?

Help me, oh GT Fighting gurus!

Not trying to hide anything. smile  I just wanted my name here to match my Gamertag since I only use the Console forums.  Is there any way to do this or do I just need to create a new account?  The new name would be "The Grue" or "TheGrue" if I cannot have spaces.

BY the way, you guys have heard that people are complaining about the game locking up their systems and some even having them rendered not playable by Chromehounds, right?  Hasn't happened to me at all (I do normally get lockups in GRAW from time to time, though).  Anyone running into this?  As much as we as a colelctive play this game, I would think someone would have posted they had problems with it, but nobody has (that I can remember), so I find it interesting.

A guy at Gamers With Jobs Press Pass just had his die while playing Chromehounds.

Was it something you actually equipped from the status screen or just something you ran over? The only equippable item I found in 2 run-thrus was a staff (both times).

It was equippable.  I found about 5 or so equippable items when I played.  One was a wind cloak, one was some kind of mace, one was a clover, one was a knight emblem, and the other was a helmet.  Actually, I may have found even one more, but I can't remember what it was.

OK, well tell me how to equip the stuff...when I go into the status screen I never see it there...and I think I found 3 clovers, the wind cloak and some other junk.

Well, I don't have the demo anymore to tell you exactly, but I think I hit the Back button and there are like 4 empty slots to put stuff in.  One is for weapons, but I think the others are for other stuff.

Alright, I finished Chapter 1.  Game is still pretty cool, but as mentioend before, I wish they would tell me what the hell is going on.  During the sacred phase, I was allowed to look at the status of the dude I sent to Valhalla.  There were some events in there that I could click on, but I couldn't tell what the purpose of them was.  Also, for my requirements for Chapter 2, one of them is Warrior.  I don't see that as a skill I can teach.  Is it a skill or is it just the type of character?

I thought it was mildly enjoyable.  Dunno about a purchase though.

One thing that really grabs my goat is that if equip a 'blue cape' item or whatever, my character looks the exact same.  LOVE the paperdoll aspect of games and this game would be sweet if the charactered reflected visually what items you equip.

I forgot to mention this in my post, but since you've brought it up, it reminded me that I was thinking the same thing when playing.  I got some helmet from a chest and when I put it on, I expected to see myself wearing the helmet.  My expectation was not met.

I picked this up yesterday along with Tekken.  I've played through Chapter 0 so far and the game is interesting.  However, I do have one complaint.  They don't really explain the game mechanics very well.  My biggest example of that is with artifacts.  You beat that vampire and you get two artifacts, both of which you can either keep or give to Odin for a penalty.  THe problem is I don't know anything about that particular game mechanic (valuation?  I forget the term) and so I have nothing to base my decision on.  The only thing I know about it at all is what I have read here which is that you can keep every artifact you get, if you want, as long as you send a proper warrior to Valhalla every chapter.  Okay, but shouldn't the game give me information to make that decision myself?

Also, if would be nice if I could see what the artifact does before I were to decide to accept it or send it to Odin.  Is there a way to do this? (not that it matters, since everyone says to just keep them all anyway).

I've never really played one of these types of games, but with the demo there I figured I would give it a try.  Was fun while it lasted, though I am not sure whether I would want what seems to be simple gameplay to last through a $60 game.  I did like the fact that you can find weapons, armor, and items and you were limited in slots to wear them so that you had to make choices.  Not sure if the items are random that you get or not (in the treasure chests), but it would be cool if they were and you could put together sets and stuff.

I guess I will read some reviews.  If this had two player I think I would be all over it because I feel my son could play along with me without much trouble, but it looks to be 1 player only.  I am sure the reviews won't be very good since the Dynasty Warriors ones never are, so unless I read something in those reviews that stands out, I will probably skip this one, at least until it hits the bargain bin.

Oh, by the way, if you click the right analog stick you can zoom the camera out a little bit.

ALso forgot to mention the AI for your army.  Just as some others said, they appear to just stand around and not do much.  I left them behind and they all died, but since I kicked ass it didn't much matter.  Not sure if they play more into it on other stages or not, but I felt they were pretty useless and didn't much help me complete the stage.

My THEORY is that due to the releases of the 360 being so... stagnant, owners of a 360 will at least try the newest release out there.  And hey, if they find it decent, they'll love it because it's the newest release.  But different strokes for different folks I suppose.

My theory is that the game rocks in multiplayer with a good squad (see: GT Goonsquad) and that's why people like it so much.

7543  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Oblivion coming to the PSP? on: July 28, 2006, 12:20:19 PM
As much as I like Elder Scrolls, if it is just a port of Oblivion for the 360, I wouldn't pick it up.  If it was some kind of alternate adventure, that would be great.  No dual analogs wwould make playing the first person aspect of this pretty tedious, though.  Yes, I know games use the face buttons, but I always find it uncomfortable, and really the only game I didn't mind it was Syphon Filter, but that is because there was lockon.  I am not sure there are enough buttons on the PSP to have lockon and still be able to do everything you can ont he 360 with the buttons (hotkeys, map, etc.)

One thing that would make it easier for us to run multiple hounds is if the little template thing you can trade with others for a particular mech build would list the parts you need.  If just one part in the build is from another faction and you don't have that part, it tells you that yo ucan't build it, but since it doesn't tell you which parts you are lacking you can't find that part and maybe get it in the lottery.  I really would like to have some of the expert players' particular mech builds for a role, but I am pretty sure everyone uses mixed parts.

I'm not a fanboy of either system, though.  I like them both.  I do have an opinion about one being better than the other, though, but I don't consider either system to be "my" system.  And that's what separates me from the fanboys.  I don't think anyone in this thread has honestly acted like a fanboy, though...not even Devil.
7549  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Chromehounds - NOW WITH IMPRESSIONS on: July 27, 2006, 06:00:47 PM
Good points, Papa Smurf.  The other thing is that we will probably need to be pickier about what classes we take out on missions (this means each player needs to make a mech for each role and learn to use them) if we want to succeed as the AI gets harder.  Also, in bringing those particular roles, we need to make sure they use them for what they are for.  I'm probably the most guilty as far as sticking to one mech.  I have only ever used my soldier mech and I should really branch out to help out when we need it.
7550  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PSP Firmware 2.8 out on: July 27, 2006, 05:56:51 PM
Yeah, it would be nice to get those loading times down with the ability to load games on a stick.  I don't care about emulation since I don't own any of the ROMs, and therefore I would be illegally playing those games.  I do wish Sony would support legitimate homebrew development, though.  Unfortunately, there probably isn't a very good way to do that and keep the emulators and prirated versions of current games off the device.

I guess one way would be for Sony to sell new games via digital distribution with whatever protection they are going to put on the PS1 emulated games.  This way you can download a game, throw it on a stick, and away you go.  I have a 2G stick, so I shouldn't have any problems (but even if the games were bigger, there are still 4G and 8G sticks coming).

I never watch movies on my PSP, but video blogs are of interest to me, so having the RSS feeds for video are great.

I agree, Soulchilde. I own both systems and while each has their strengths, PSP is currently winning and with the release schedule I see for the rest of the year, the PSP will have way more quality titles than the DS. I do agree that DS is finally getting some more quality games, but the PSP just smacks its ass with what they have coming down the pipe.

This is why you don't see as many threads about this suff. It's all a matter of personal taste.

I think it's funny though!  biggrin

Tell you what, Devil.  Let's look at sales data at the end of the year and see which one comes out on top.  We all know you don't like the DS and we all know I like both systems, so your opinion seems a little biased.  However, the sales data will not be biased either way, so we can use that as our little friend.  Care to make any friendly wagers? smile
7552  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / PSP Firmware 2.8 out on: July 27, 2006, 02:29:02 PM
I downloaded it this morning and the major feature it adds is the ability to download videos from RSS feeds.  I tested it out this morning, downloading the latest Digg video and it worked great.  It also supposedly adds the ability to name videos whatever you want and drop them in a certain video folder for playing.  Supposedly, this doesn;t work for the AVC MP4s, though, which are Sony's goofy little version of them.  Not a big deal, though, since they still work the way you used to have to format them.
