it does seem sort of easy.  BUT.  Sometimes games that tend to be on the easier side still have a fantastic story thats wonderful to play through and see to the end.

I have only played about 6 hours, so I can't comment too terribly much on this with regards to Okami, but I can say that I don't care if a game is easy if it pulls me in and I get wrapped up in the environment and story.  Okami is such a game, so even if the difficulty doesn't ramp up, I won't care.  Some people equate easy with boring and Okami is far from boring.

The 'punniness' doesn't stop through the whole game - even the end-game credits is punny and has the whole "Executive Progoocer" sort of thing to it.  Definately lighthearted.

It's funny because the puns are one of the things that I really enjoy about the game and yet Gamespot listed it as a negative and I assume docked their review score because of it.  Sometimes gamers take themselves a little too seriously.

Simply put, it's all the rave nowadays to bash on the PS3 by overemphasizing little rumors that come from "well known sources" or "multiple information sources".

Yeah, not sure why people do this when Sony gives us plenty of ammunition straight from their own mouths.

I played several more hours today and this game is right up my alley.  It is definitely very Zelda-like, but I actually like this game more, due to the art sytle and the awesome Japanese music.  I think anyone who doesn't like it has no soul.  Tongue

7411  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Okami impressions on: September 23, 2006, 04:40:29 PM
I played for about an hour this morning and it is everything I had expected (I had very high expectations).  The forum effect didn't get me since I have been planning on getting this game for like a year now.  I just adore the artwork in the game and I think it is the most beautiful game I have ever played (but then again I have an Okami wallpaper as my computer's desktop wallpaper, so I know I enjoy the art).  I also love the music, but I also love traditional Japanese music.  It is going to take me a little bit to get used to the paintbrush, though.  I have messed up drawings plenty of times and I suck drawing witha pencil, much less a left analog stick.  I am sure I will improve.  TO me, this is one of those games you can show off to non-gamers and they fcan find something to appreciate about it.

The jibbersih when people talk doesn't bother me like it does some, but I am used to things like Animal Crossing, so that could be why.

My point here is that there is certainly a fine line to be walked here.  I would love it if all these companies gave us this exta stuff for free, but I don't expect it.  I also expect to get enough content for the $60 I paid for the game and only have supplemental, non-important content be offered via paid download.  This is acceptable to me.  Downloading extra maps or gameplay types is acceptable.  However, when I begin to feel like I should have had this content for my $60 or that you are forced to buy it to be on a level playing field, that is when I begin to have a problem with it.

The main problem I see is that the definition of "acceptable amount of content" is going to have a very different meaning for developers/publishers than it does to gamers.

I agree wholeheartedly, which is why I mentioned it being a fine line.  I think that over time these guys will get a grasp on what is acceptable to gamers and what is not.  Bethesda certainly learned real quick with the horse armor and everything they released afterwards gave more content for less money.  There will be mistakes made, but i think in the end, it will all shake out.

Uh, what?

Let's see, we had a discussion on this subject sometime ago. W T F did I tell all of you people?!?!  I told you months ago we needed to stick a fucking knife in the shitbag company that Bethesda is.  I said, you let one game company do it now, it's just gonna keep getting worse.  I don't want to hear any bitching about this, UNLESS YOU BITCHED WHEN BETHESDA DID IT TOO!!  When one asshole does something shitheaded, particularly when it comes to making money, all other assholes (aka companies) will be forced to do it to to keep pace.

Easy there Jake.  I think it is pretty early to crucify Bethesda.  They put a lot of content forth, and while it was pretty much universally agreed that the horse armor download was crap, the others were not.

Also, Bethesda didn't invent this idea, MS did (at least on their platform).  Sure, Bethesda was the first one to release actual content downloads for pay, but they weren't necessarily the first to plan on doing it.  I have no problem with some microtransactions.  With Oblivion, for example, I didn't look at the stuff they offered and think that they held content back from me.  I played Oblivion for 95 hours.  They gave me plenty of content without those extra addons.  I don't think I've really seen any downloadable content yet from any company where I felt like they ripped me off by taking content they should have given me for the initial paying price and making it downloadable.  If the rumors about EA selling alternate jerseys on the Marketplace is indeed true, I think they will be the first.

The other potential downside to downloadable content is if they sell items that you feel you have to have to compete.  I am not sure what the final verdict on the Chromehounds downloadable weapons for pay were, but if they were the best weapons in the game and you had to pay for them to compete, I have a problem with that.

Now, as people have mentioned I can see how some people might benefit from buying a game with no car sor tracks and only buying what they want.  I think most people, though, would benefit from just buying the more expensive version.  I guess I can't complain about a choice in that regard, though.  It's certainly nice to have options.

You seem to have left out the part of the article where he kind of speculates that certainly people can't be expected to pay that much:

Quote
Now, is it possible that the game will be a full-priced title with a built-in download system that allows users to download cars and tracks equal to the number of the game's retail price? We hope the model ends up similar to this. However, right now, details are extremely sparse, and Sony has to have an answer to these questions[/quote

So, I'm not quite sure we can say the game will cost that much.  Wait....did I just defend Sony?  I need to go take a shower.

Actually, I think it is probably hard to review this thing from today's standpoint.  You almost have to give it two scores.  One which compares it to today's games and how it stands up against them and then another which reviews it based on the time it was originally created.  Then, let the reader decide which of those views is appropriate for them.  Mention all the flaws in the review so that newer gamers, who don't have that background can pass it up if the downsides of gameplay from last decade doesn't appeal to them.

That said, I saw this on GAF and thought it was hilarious.  It was mocking the part of his review where he compains about the battle mechanics:

Quote
Pits are a major issue in Super Mario Bros. Each time you try to make Mario walk over a pit, he falls in it and dies. You're basically forced to make him jump over the pits. But if you're not timing the jump carefully, Mario can still fall, and you have to do the level all over again.

I hate to do this to you guys and I should have posted this sooner (I always forget this Sports forum here is separate from the Console forum).  I had vowed I wouldn't buy an EA Sports game again, but this year I caved in and bought it.  The game is alright, I suppose, but a couple things have really pissed me off about it.  One, no promised patch and two, no roster updates.  So, this past week, I finally got pissed off enough to sell the thing and get some games with the money.  Now, my boycott is in full effect and extending to all EA games.  Those two things I mentioned, plus having features available in the PS2/XBox generation games, were the final straw.  As such, since I have no game, I cannot play in the league.  Hopefully you guys can fill my spot fairly quickly and I do apologize.  Normally, I don't like to piss off the forums I hang out at, so hopefully you guys can forgive.  I could just no longer stand to have this game in my collection and EA will see no more of my money ever (even if Spore came out for Wii).

In order to go up in ranks, you have to earn Achievements.  In your house, there is a screen where you can check your progress in various aspects of the game.  It will show you how many Achievement points you have and how many you need to get up to the next rank.  I am not sitting in front of the game or else I would give you more precise instructions, but, alas, I am not.

I also got Cooking Mama today and went through the first three recipes (and all variations), even got a gold on one.  Let me just say this: peeling potatoes is a PITA.  It's very much a focused Wario Ware game.  The various stages of cooking are represented by  quick mini-games (maybe 20 seconds to one minute in length), cutting a carrot, peeling a potato, putting various items in a mixing bowl, tossing items into a pot and changing the heat and stirring.  Highly recommend that you practice every recipe first, so you're not playing the "what the hell do I do" game while trying to actually cook.

It seems to be a lot of fun, but I'm not sure how long it can sustain that fun.  How many variations on food preparation can there be?

Still, seems worth the modest $20 price.

This echoes my thoughts exactly, even up to the potato peeling part, but then potato peeling is kind of a PITA in real life, too.  icon_biggrin

I am having fun with it so far and for $20, I don't think you can go wrong even if you got bored of it fairly quickly.  I will just try to get gold in every one of these recipes.  I had heard conflicting reports on how many mini games there are.  One thing I read said 50 and another said 200.  Not sure which is accurate yet as I have only done about 4 recipes.

One issue, though: there doesn't seem to be a map anywhere (unless you pick one up later, but I needed it early on) and the levels seem to be quite confusing.

There is a map in the game.  Hit Start and then I think you move left with the D-pad (You can move right and left to workthrough various menus here, but one of them is the map).

I figured it would be something simple.  Ah, for the days I actually read manuals...

Thanks, TG!

I want to correct this now that I have the game in front of me.  Use the L and R buttons to cycle through the menus when you have pressed Start.

As far as question 2, I imported a navy blue one at launch and use it here in the U.S just fine, so no problems there.  When it first comes up, it will be in Japanese, but it isn't too difficult to work your way through the options and set it to English.
