For those that plan on pre-ordering the Wii tomorrow (or standing in line to get one on release), what games outside of Zelda will you be picking up for it?  What else that's enticing is out there?  Thanks much.

Still trying to narrow down between Tony Hawk, Excite Truck, Super Monkey Ball, Red Steel, and Rayman, besides Zelda of course.

This whole sentence makes me sad.  Cue the crying smiley:   crybaby

So will Killing in the name of include the 10 minute part where he screams 'F you I won't do what you told me?'  Maybe they'll change it to 'Hug you, I'll do what you told me!'

I've wondered about that too.  I figured they would steer clear of songs that required heavy editing.

There is a radio-edited version of this song and it basically cuts out those parts.  I assume that is the version they will be covering.

7372  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime - yay? nay? I gots it? I wants it? on: October 06, 2006, 02:39:33 AM
I just got my 100th slime tonight.  I will of course want to get all the items and recipes and such, so I still have some work to do.  The one thing about the tank battles is found a pretty sure way to win tank battles:

Spoiler for Hiden:
I get a knight dude, go break into the other tank, and smash everything there.  Then, I return to the tank and help out with the items.  Even for the tank battles where they get my health down to zero, I just beat off the baddies until my crew gets theirs down to 0.  Then, I kill all their baddies in one go and run over to the tank and destroy it.  Once I figured this out, I never lost another tank battle.  The only tough one after that point was the one in the end realm where the opposing crew was all statues, because I had forgotten how to kill them, if there was a way.

Still, it was a very fun game and I hate that Gamespot knocked it for the puns, because it was very much a part of the charm of the game.  Definitely an easy game, but easy doesn't equate with bad as long as the game is fun and I definitely had a fun time with it.

I played through the first world and I like it as much, if not more, than the first one.  Yes, you can just blow through the levels, but the challenge is getting the Gold stars.  This is what Nintendo typically does, where they have the game be easy on a certain level, so that a kid could play it, but there is a layer of depth there for older gamers.  Nintendo are kings of this type of thing and it shows with this game.  I also tried the WiFi out and downloaded the map that was available from Nintendo.  My one knock would be that it would be nice to be able to access anyone's created levels, instead of only your Friends.  I then went back to Rocket Slime, since I am almost finished, but rest assured I will be getting back to Mario vs. DK 2 very soon.

Oh, I also like the touch screen controls for being able to control all the minis at one time.  I think it really allows you to manage all of these little guys at one time in order to get the gold.
7376  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: [360] Sonic the Hedgehog demo available via Marketplace on: October 05, 2006, 03:03:39 AM
Man, that game controls horribly.  I really liked the graphics and wanted to like the demo (my son really wanted me to like it a lot to, so that I would eventually buy it), but unless they do something to those controls, the game is close to unplayable.  I did get a little better at it as I played, but you shouldn't have to fight the controls the whole time you play.

Why do you need the camera to play Totem Ball?

It watches your arms in order to perform actions on the screen.  I suppose they could have developed it to not work with a camera, but that's not the design choice they made, just like Eye Toy games on the PS2.

That part has me hopelessly confused as well..

It's actually an elephant painted across elevator doors.  In the older ones, it was a bear face.  As to why it's happening?  Because it's silly?  You guys do remember that video games can be light-hearted, right?  Shit, even if it was an elephant in a microwave, it would be fine.

I'm not sure lifting up on the remote is more intuitive then pressing "A" to snap the ball.  Or moving the remote in the direction of a wr is more intuative than just pressing the the button flashing above the recievers head.  Actually pressing the button to pass the ball isn't what makes football complex.  It's knowing when to throw and to whom.  The remote doesn't help with that.

Imagine you've never played a video game in your life.  Now, I give you a 360 controller and tell you that you need to press A to snap the ball and then you have to press the button on the 360 controller matching the icon on the screen above that receiver.  Remember, you've never played a video game.  So, in order to do this, you have to look at the controller because you have no clue which button is where.  So, you hit A to snap, which is probably fairly easy once you realize it is the bottom button.  However, I imagine you are going to have to find your open receiver, see which button to press and then take your eyes off the screen to look down at the controller to figure out which button is which.  In that time, you will very likely be sacked.

Now, more over to the Wii.  I tell you that you have only one button to press.  You lift up and press that one button to snap (this is actually technically more complex since there is a motion involved, but snapping the football isn't exactly a pressure thing other than the play clock and you don't have to look at the controller to lift it up, so even though it added a step, it shouldn't be any more difficult).  Then in order to throw to a receiver you flick in the direction of the receiver and hit that one button.  You never had to take your eyes off the screen.  You never had to worry about which one of the 5 or 6 buttons you needed to press to throw the ball to your receiver.

Which one sounds more intuitive as a first time gamer?

Impressive.  I can't really see the Zelda comparisons myself.  Now if you said it reminded you of playing a Japanese painting then I would be apt to agree with you!

Interesting.  I can't see how you can't see how it is like Zelda.  You have this open world that you take on fairly linearly, though you can backtrack.   You have sun things instead of hearts which you can upgrade (though you mainly do it with Praise, you can also do it by collecting heart, I mean sun, pieces).  You get new abilities as you play which allow you to access areas you couldn't before.  You get new combat techniques.  You go into dungeons and can find a dungeon map.  You have to solve little puzzles in those dungeons to progress in them.  THere are locks on the doors that require dungeons to open (and the dungeons have rooms separated by doors).  There is a big boss battle at the end of the dungeon.

To me, it is played in the exact style of Zelda, except instead of a sword and shield, you use a paintbrush and your two God items.
7392  Gaming / Console / PC Gaming / Re: Okami impressions on: September 27, 2006, 04:04:57 AM
This game just kicks so much ass.  I didn't understand why everyone was saying it was Zelda-like in the previews, given that I knew it was a game that had a paintbrush focus.  I totally get the comparison now and honestly, I think it out-Zeldas Zelda.

They had him quoted in the latest EGM (or one of those mags) where he said game prices were too high and then underneath "Right before MS announces a $60 price tag for gears of war!"

Anyone who thinks CliffyB is responsible for setting the price of Gears of War is a very misguided individual.  He can hate $60 games, have MS set the price of his game at $60, and still not be a hypocrite.

The Wii is out of the picture now

It is?

I have a 360 and I enjoy the crap out of it.  The games I have gotten have been very good and I really like the wholoe XBox Live integration for online gaming.  I think there are a number of games out right now that make it worth purchasing, but I would assume they are not up your alley or you would own a 360 already.  Games like Lost Planet, Gears of War, and these new Japanese RPGs which are hopefully coming to the U.S. will definitely make the 360 a good choice if you don't already think so.  Also, all the media integration on the 360 gets a lot of use.  I stream all my MP3s over from my computer while playing games and I just used the 360 as a picture viewer this weekend when some company came over and they had some trip pictures on a USB stick.  If the PS3 (I am assuming price is the issue) and the Wii (I think you're crazy for not getting one) are not for you as far as the "next gen" consoles go, then I think the 360 will fill your nights with good gaming just fine.
